Acer Nitro 5 Ryzen 5 3550H & GTX 1650 powered fun!
I wish I had something to actually complain about this laptop, but none of the minor issues are deal breakers and very easily solved.

Excellent video dude! U really covered all of the info I needed.
Glad it was helpful!
For the first time in a long time I don’t have a laptop currently but if I was going to buy one it would be one that could be upgraded like this one. To much these days it’s all soldered in, to make for a flatter form factor, no good for us who like to take them apart at the first chance. Great video as normal Mike, you must be days away from 40k subs.
Hi paul and like you i need to be able to take these things apart and tinker around in there, the modern soldered stuff really kills my soul a little bit the more and more it happens these days.
I get that the majority of people will get the laptop and just use it until it dies, but the small number of us will see this as an investment and want to upgrade and tweak the spec to our own levels and this is what makes the Acer Nitro AMD series a much better proposition than the "others" with similar specs.
Cruising all the way to 40K :-)
The name of that laptop reminds me of my old service number !!! lol. I do like the way that most Acer laptops are easy to upgrade, at least those from the last 5 years anyway. I think that for the money this is a really decent laptop and considering dirty students are heading off to college or uni this would be a good buy for them. Thanks for another great video Mike :-)
lol dirty students, that actually made me lol
i am considering buying this but since this will be my first pc related device i think this helped alot!
Glad to help
I got this 1 for Xmas, it's really fast and makes video editing a breeze, did put a HDD in the spare slot, the connecter slot to put it in seems outa place tho, over all its amazing
Thanks for taking the time to let us know your thoughts
Glad it can be upgraded.
Just ordered one for my son's birthday. £624 from Currys.
It will be his first laptop. He likes gaming (don't we all!!) but we can't really afford a high-end model.
I will add an extra drive in it at some point, as 256GB is just too small.
Nice to see a UK chap for a change.
thanks Ashton, and hope you all enjoy it
Very good I like it
Thank you so much 😀
I have finally found a video that shows the motherboard set up. There is a second m.2 socket on this one that is SATA which has a weird placement for install.
is there? i didn't notice it
its a great machine but that second m2 sata was a pain, it would not recognise nvme and had to be sata but then it wouldnt auto detect?? i had to get windows to look at it as a storage device rather than a extra drive. but apart from that niggle the machine is brilliant for its price
Great video Mike! I've had this for about 6 months at it's been fantastic. Just considering adding a 1TB SSD into the second m.2 slot. I've done some reading which says it's SATA only - just wondering if you noticed that it's a 2280 slot length or a different length? Haven't pulled my back off yet to avoid warranty-voiding but want to know I'm getting the right length SSD!
sorry mate i don't have it anymore it was a gift for a friend but i'll see if i can find out
Nice budget entry-level gaming laptop, Mike` Thanks for the review. Having to take out both RAM sticks to upgrade is a pain in the rear-end. If I was even going to remotely think about gaming, I would upgrade the RAM first. The ability to put in a SAT SSD is a real bonus! One question - does the keyboard have to be red?!?
I rather replace both sticks of ram to have matched stick and keeping dual channel, especially on APU because memory speed really matter here. Having mismatched would work, but only single channel and lower performance.
yeah the keyboard is kinda themed red for the whole nitro / AMD branding, but your not the first one to ask about having a RGB keyboard
Thanks! How long does the battery last on a productivity use? and gaming?
depends on a lot of variables but not very long an hours or so really. And also the cpu and gpu throttle down when not on mains so performance is less to
Thanks ! Great video ! Can you clarify me with this please just need a confirmation,
If I'm buying a i5 9th gen with 1TB HDD, I'll be able to add 512GB SSD right ? And I can move my OS to SSD then ?
Yes that should be fine
Could you do a how to on upgrading the ssd on this particular model? I tried putting in a secondary nvme but it isn't compatible and I'm useless so I need RUclips folk to teach me
This is maybe easier to fix or at least advise if we can ask more questions and get direct answers, so feel free to join our Discord chat and we can go over it in more detail discord.gg/gaeeDPw
Hi! i am thinking of getting one of theese, can you do a video of quick gameplay on the it nitro 5 of a game called: The coin game. its on steam. thanks!
sorry i don't have it anymore or i would do that for you
Thank you for this wonderful Review, it has made my mind up to buy the same laptop.
But using this model ACER Nitro 5 15.6" Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 5, GTX 1650, 256 GB SSD
AMD Ryzen 5 3550H Processor
RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 256 GB SSD
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4 GB
I will be using it for mainly gaming for my daughter, who will be running The Sims and Roblox the majority of the time.
Hope this model copes with that based on what you have said here???
yes that will do really well
Is this laptop good for video editing colour grading in premiere pro?
not really but it will do it
Hey! I'm a photographer and I use heavy softwares such as Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro & sometimes AfterEffects ad well. Would you recommend me to buy this laptop and use it for the next, say, 2-3 years?
Probably not really it needs more ram but otherwise it is great for the price but as always pay more get more
I have one a very good laptop. I upgrade my ram to two 8gb sticks and added a 2tb external hard drive. l love it. Also have a 4tb external hard drive.
yep nice unit and pretty flexible
Yep thinking about selling it and getting the 260 version or just keep it and try to build one
What Are the Capabilities of USP type-c in the laptop? Can I Connect Monitor using usb type c.
not sure sorry, my guess is not
sir battery with gaming and without gaming please tell and very informative video
gaming without mains power is a really bad idea with any AMD ryzen laptop even in high power mode, the battery will die very quickly and the performance will not match the mains
I want to buy this laptop now in 2023, would you advice it? I'm not a gaming freak just want a power general purpose machine that can handle anything i throw at it
If it is a good price go for it, the newer cpus offer better results though
2 of my friends hit me up for advice on laptops recently and one of my friends settled on this after getting some recommendations from me: www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Legion-Processor-Graphics-Keyboard/dp/B089G84QX5/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=lenovo+legion+5&qid=1600948343&sr=8-4 The Acer 5's I also looked at and some of them are fine bang for buck. I am not a fan of gaming laptops as the form factor doesn't mesh well with high end hardware. Even with todays high-end hardware that does a good job sipping less power at idle, the temperatures and power draw with gaming laptops can be a bit much. I'm more from the camp of laptops are for things other than gaming, but it's fine to have a GPU with some muscle just in case. At least with todays "gaming" laptops you can have reasonable performance without compromising mobility like the battery draining too fast, because the parts do a better job with efficiency for less demanding tasks (not gaming). It's nice to have the power there if you need it though. Anyway interesting video and good review. I think the Lenovo 5 my friend purchased will server him well. It'd better for all that money.
sorry for the late reply this was also stuck in the held for review section?
@@mikesunboxing I wouldn't know. But I have a foul mouth so maybe 😅
how is its display compared to the acer aspire 5 a 515 43.
i think they are pretty similar to be honest, spec wise they might be a little different, but in real use i can't see much difference
I have the same laptop but the external display connects to the integreted graphics card not the gtx 1650 plz help
you need to select the right gpu in the AMD radeon software. If it is just a normal desktop it will try and use the onboard to save power
@@mikesunboxing bro how can i do that?, I have gone through the Radon software but there is no option to change
Note- i have gtx 1650 and amd vega 8
@@mikesunboxing can u plz check with your device and let me know
I need to get this one for school and gaming cus my laptop is anold one handed down to me by my mom
It has many problems like when the charger is plugged it ain't charging
It even freezes time to time
Overheats inn 5 minutes of use
might need a good servicing, new paste and a bit of dust removal from fans etc
@@mikesunboxing thanks for the tips
@@Elgen127 no problem any time
Acer Nitro 5 ryzen 5 vs Asus tuf fx505dt ryzen 5 which is the best one?
not tried the tuf sorry sorry i can't say for sure
How do I disconnect the hard drive in this laptop
remove the screws around the outside edge of the base and a couple in the centre then unclip the plastic cover, the drive will be visible
How Can I change keyboard color?
no sorry red only or off
What is the storage how much GB
there are a few options available depending on your location and availability, this model is about to be replaced so look out for some bargains
@@mikesunboxing ok
Try microsoft flight simulator 2020 on that laptop please Mike
i might try that, it should run it okay at lower settings
@@mikesunboxing yea maybe medium preset. In my knowledge the gtx 1650 should run 30 fps to 35 fps
Yeah that would sound about right to me
Is it good for gaming?
Yes pretty decent
@@mikesunboxing will i get 60 fps on normal to high settings? (AAA titles) also thank you for the reply.
Bought a laptop once, never again. They suck!
You sound like my wife!
@@mikesunboxing 😂
Why, Mike? I have had some good experiences, and some bad ones. And... when you are on the road (which I used to do for weeks at a time) they are a lifesaver.
Yeah when it comes to portability a decent laptop is the best choice over a mini pc or tablet
@@mikesunboxing yeah I've still got one they are useful
What’s the refresh rate?
75hz i think
I brought one today and it won’t let me change refresh rate
@@mikesunboxing and the people I brought it from said it’s 144hz
@@mikesunboxing I got it from cec
CEC
can u give that to me]
I dont think so mate
sorry it has someone's name on it already - but ssshhhh it's a surprise
Wtf dude "Games run pretty smooth" meanwhile 40 fps on fortnite,"movies look beautiful" a youtube add
Fortnite runs bad on anything it stutters constantly on the pc platform. It doesn’t matter what you show on the screen it will still show off how it looks. There is no need for toxicity Mike’s a legend. You could have gone about saying that another way mate
@@callumyoung4107 aight m8, disappointing nonetheless
If you have a look you will see that he is running fortnite on all epic settings achieving about 40 fps, most people do not play on all epic but "competitive" settings, this would be every thing set to low apart from view distance which would be epic. If they were set to that it would achieve 100+ fps most likely
the low is 40 fps which is often the case in this game as frame rates peak and low all the time especially around spawn points. the games was running at ultra as ghostadder pointed out, and even my 3600 / 2060 spikes like crazy in fortnite, if you watched the FPS carefully the average would have easily of been around 60FPS
Thanks for the support Trooper and Ghost. appreciate it
