  • South Downs Way 100 was Victoria's second 100 miler and number two in the quest for the Centurion Grand Slam. ‘Sick Again’ is the story of our race. It was undoubtedly the hottest Centurion race I have ever done and both of us had to contend with continual sickness from around the 50 mile point onwards. The DNF rate was one of the highest ever for a Centurion 100 miler. Did we make it? Let's find out.

This SWD100 was my first 100 miler finish (I had DNF in the muddy TP100 5 weeks before). At Houghton Farm I was ready to retire. I also was sunbaked by the sun and had thrown up 4 times already. I also was already quite worried about the cut-off times.
However, 2 factors gave me enormous strength and were essential and pivotal to have continued and reached the finish line. First, it was a chat with one of the volunteers, mainly motivating me to at least try to reach Washington, that I still had time to have a rest and still get there. Second it was when I saw you and Victoria arriving at Houghton Farm. At that moment I felt, ok, it’s still not too late to continue. I was pretty sure both of you would finish it, so it gave me a huge hope and strength to carry on. Thank you very much 😊
Surprisingly, soon after leaving Houghton Farm, I started to feel much better, physically and mentally. Had a great run from there to the end, I loved the night section, all the CPs and the interactions with the staff and volunteers. What a great journey it was.
By the way, it’s me at minute 15:00 running next to you on that big hill after Houghton Farm.
Congratulations, huge thanks for the great video. It's very important to show all the sides of ultra running, not only the finish line celebrations.
    Good luck for tomorrow 👍

Amazing! Huge effort from you both in really tough exposed conditions. When I did the SDW100 in 2021 we had very similar conditions and getting sick was on the agenda for me and lot of others. I've just completed the Lakeland 100 and again was sick through the first night and into the morning. What saved my race this time was crystallised stem ginger cubes. They really helped settle my stomach.

Honestly, the idea of completing 100 miles is beyond baffling to me and to have to grind it out like that takes pure grit and determination. Oh I am so sorry for spilling my tea everywhere and then throwing up all over the mens toilets. I was a total disaster when I arrived there!! The thing about ultras and 100s is that sometimes things go against you and sometimes things go for you. Mostly if you plan well, things go in your favour. But sometimes there are things over which you only have limited control, like the weather. Don't dismiss the distance based on what you saw of me on that day!!
