  • In this issue's Tech Session, Nick Jennison takes a closer look at the style of our cover artist. Probably the most exciting and intense guitar player of a generation, Zakk Wylde is part of a proud lineage of Les Paul-toting rock players dating back to the birth of heavy metal. Rising to prominence in 1988 as the sideman for Ozzy Osbourne, Zakk’s ferocious pentatonic-based playing stood in stark contrast to the neo-classical shredders of the age. Like John Sykes and Gary Moore before him, Zakk fused a blues-rock inspired vocabulary with next-level chops and unparalleled intensity to create a sound that drips with reckless abandon but is in fact tightly controlled and calculated. It might sound like the product of sheer brute force, but Zakk knows precisely what he’s doing, and his playing is remarkably well organised.

There are tons of videos out there which attempt to break down Zakk's playing, but no one has done it as well as Mr. Jennison, including Zakk Wylde himself.

really good video. Excellent work covering the pick slanting and everything. I find a lot of people skip over that and unless you do it intuitively, or think it through like Troy Grady has taught everyone who is familiar with his work, the playing is impossible.

Great stuff! Are the tabs for this tech session available? I see mention of them in the interactive issue and in another comment, but I can't find them anywhere.

Hi and congratulations always for your fantastic videos. As everyone knows zakk wylde doesn't use the send/return effects loop. Until recently his modulation pedals like Flanger and Chorus were placed on the pedalboard after the overdrive pedal. Now in the last period he is placing the same pedals before the overdrive pedal. What is your opinion on this and where do you prefer them? Before or after the overdrive pedal? thanks in advance

How do you do those squealing sounds in that riff that starts @6:03? (I think it's happening when he's fretting the 5th and then again 4th frets). and then again @7:44? Zakk does those ALL the time and I have no idea what it is. Is it a pedal effect or something?

So zakk is essentially scraping the tops of his fingers against the strings on his picking hand? Just wanna make sure I am understanding correctly ha. He must have some gnarly callous' on the tops of his fingers on his picking hand then? Cause I can only do that for a few minutes before it starts hurting my fingers lol

@@VashStarwind overlap your picking thumb over the pick and play like normal if you are doing a lead and you will get some cool tones, if you are trying to focus on a single note to get a good squealing sound then dig into it a bit more.
