      So many damn Jazz musicians like me love an Eb3 and this guy doing the demo is a Jerk.This bass is great for Blues and Rock and Roll and many other things.The guy who demonstrated it forgot to say that it's important to adjust the volume on the pickups to ones liking.Also,nowadays even cheap amps come with an Eq or graphic Eq and one needs to adjust it to what you like.I happen to love the sound of that big fat front pickup.One of my Eb basses had a D'marzio put in as a replacement for the front pick up and it was just as good.I am truly amazed by how nice the Epiphone version sounds.I can't believe that Gibson appears to be going out of business.WTF is that?

    i have been playing since 1977. i think the sounds you got on this demo are great. i do not disagree with you on your opinion of the bridge. but it is what it is. the pickups however i disagree on. this bass was not designed for hi-fi jazz bass modern active like sounds. the pickups soloed almost sound like two different basses. by design. this bass was not designed to be a solo instrument, but rather to fit into the mix. when Jamerson was recording with motown, he always felt the recorded bass sound was too high endy or clicky, but when he heard the final mixes, he felt they sounded great. due to the vision of the engineers and their understanding of the finished product. this bass design is from that era. it was designed to fit into the mix using both pickups. i think the pick sound you got with this bass is fantastic. to me your comments don't match the sounds you achieved with this bass. i saw Brian Ray, Mcartney"s Bassist/guitarist playing one of these on the SNL 40th anniversary special. so i got one because of that. if it's good enough for him it's good enough for me. i gave that one to my son as he needed a bass for his endevours at NYU. however i ordered a replacement because i missed it. i have owned everything from fender. to alembic, to zon, to the four custom Warmoths and epiphone Jack Casady basses i own now. I can say the the epiphone eb-3 is a great bass.

    • @DMSProduktions
      @DMSProduktions 6 лет назад +4

      It IS a great bass if you KNOW it's limitations. That bridge pick up IS rubbish! It sounds like a tuned down guitar and is basically useless. It is NOT a GIBSON made pick up! (Which would have been much better made!)
      I pulled mine apart and it had f/a wiring and a shitty little magnet! (Was wound to a pissy 6K!)
      Rebuilt by Mr. Fabulous, (to 16K) and moved from the bridge slightly and wow, WHAT a classic bass tone! It records superbly! WOULDN'T change it now!

      That's quite a collection of basses you own or have been through.What is your opinion of the Fender Starcaster Bass guitar? It has two huge humbuckers and I so often catch it demoed with both turning out full bass.I think some balancing of the pickups and it might be a great sounding instrument.I have been through Fender,Gibson(Eb0 and Eb3,the Eb3 was stolen,not willingly given up.) Rickenbacker 4003,and I now have two Japanese basses one regular,one that I had converted to a fretless.I still want that fat humbucker bass sound and am seriously considering an Epiphone Eb3,used.Ideas?

    • @josephdrach2276
      @josephdrach2276 5 лет назад

      @@DMSProduktions Do you think it would be difficult to wire in an Eb3 front type pick up in the back if I wanted?If I could find one I would consider a D'MARZIO which was designed as a replacement for the front pick up and from personal experience I can tell you,it sounds like it.The other possibility would be (maybe)a precision pick up,if it wouldn't be too difficult and would be a good balance for the front.I don't know if the precision has enough output.Is it very hard to change the pickups?

    • @josephdrach2276
      @josephdrach2276 5 лет назад +1

      I had the Gibson Eb3 and it was just great for solos.I didn't like lots of treble and that sound like two different basses is an interesting thing,when soloing.So is mixing the pickups.One plays a Rickenbacker 4003 for it's strong points and an Eb3 For it's strong points.The Rickenbacker has lots of mid and treble but doesn't compare in it's bass capacity to the Eb3 and vice versa.Both are great instruments.One needs to use there strong points or look for another bass either instead of the one or as an add on.They haven't made a Gibsonbacker yet,to please people who like both.The P/J Bass is an example of a great hybrid bass guitar.

    • @DMSProduktions
      @DMSProduktions 5 лет назад

      Well yes you could, DM make a front and back version of the mud/side winder bass 'bucker. I saw another video here, where some1 did just that and it DID sound pretty darn good, however he replaced them with 2 ARTECS, made to that spec.
      However, what I have in there now is killer, and would not change it! The custom wound mini I have just nails ALL those classic Gibbo and P bass tones.
      Re the P bass pick up, NO, just no! Otherwise BUY a Squier CV P Bass!
      KEEP with Gibson vibe with the EB3!

    I've got a MIK 2000 (Saein factory) Epiphone EB-3. The tone is completely different from the instrument in this video. Mine is very rich and very clear. Lots of fundamental, and lots of authoritative tone in the low end. Sweet high end. Unique sustain pattern, with the notes sustaining longer and more evenly but also more softly/subtly. The construction and playability are stellar.

    This is actually a great bass if you:
    a) Replace the bridge with the Hipshot as mentioned in the video. The neck-dive on this bass is an issue, but the Hipshot's weight helps balance that out. Combined with a wide, suede on the body side strap, neck-dive is manageable.
    b) Get a decent Preamp/DI. The pickups are lacking but a preamp (Eden or Sansamp) should clear that up before you start searching for new pickups (Dimarzio model 1)
    c) It's big. You'll need the wingspan of a Pterodactyl to fly this bass. The forward strap peg pushes the bass fsr out left (for you right handers). This bass suits those who are 6' and over (or Orangutans) best. What's more, if you're not fit, this bass will destroy you after a half hour, so find a gym and actually go.
    Summation: I do enjoy this bass, having corrected it's faults and meeting the physical criteria (fit, 6' Pterodactyl) and an Eden WTDI. I've flown my EB3 (black finish with abovementioned upgrades) for 7 gigs now, resulting in complements such as "That bass sounds epic!" to "That's the most beatiful guitar I've ever seen."
    Like dating a beautiful girl... you won't be driving her to the prom in a ford, but when you arrive she will be stunning beyond belief.

I hate that fact . I really like this bass design and have heard them sound amazing by the right players . So I am planning on buying the Epi , replacing the bridge with a Babicz full contact bridge (direct replacement ) and a set of pick ups from Seymour duncan , then have a my awesome tech do his magic , and boom ,I have got a great bass that is 34" scale . I will be posting on how it turns out . Thanks for the video ,I agree with all your takes ....

      @averyetvspecial1487 5 лет назад

      MrWilson WithaStrat The original EB-3 was short scale, that’s why the SG Bass is like that. The Epiphone is closer to the Gibson EB-3L, which was a rarer variation of the vintage SG bass. I bought the Epiphone but personally wish they’d done a short scale EB-3 with a set neck (only the single pickup bolt-on EB0 Epi is short). I dig the JB style neck on this bass but given it sounds so different to most basses I wouldn’t mind if it was shortscale (and it would reduce the neck dive a tiny bit).

    I think its not about "what do you have to do" with the bridge , I think its about "What do you want" , i have one and its de SG Design that gives you the ultimate retro structure, and certainly its the lioness of two worlds in sound, but it allows you to modify sound from the amp.

It's quite difficult to get a good tone out of it (DI) while recording and adding an amp sim only highlights how indistinct and low-end-swamping it can be. This bass can be improved upon. Install a hipshot supertone 3 point bridge or Babicz 3 point bridge. Swap out neck pickup for a Dimarzio Model 1 and it will be worth it is you want to keep the SG body style. It’s worth it. As for strings flat wounds provide the sound I’m looking for.

    Ik have an Epiphone EB0, the shortscale version. It only has the muddy neck pickup. It sounds okay if you play it with a pick, if you play it with your fingers, it sucks. It lacks definition and clarity.
    The sound is good for some songs, but not for all songs. It is not nearly as versitile as a Fender Jazzbass or a Precision Bass.
    I do like the feel of it though. It feels good to me.
    The three point bridge is a disaster.

    Something weird happened today. I went to a huge guitar center (Music Store Köln/Germany) to buy an American Fender Performer Precision. I was thinking to by the one in color penny. I didn’t like the sound after testing it with a few amps, I didn’t like the build quality and finish either. Finally, I found the satin neck very uncomfortable. I tried more Fender’s around €1000-€1200 price point. None of them worked for me.
    Desperately I started trying random basses. Then grabbed an Epiphone SG bass (I have an Epiphone SG guitar, which I’m very happy with). I instantly connected with the SG bass. Dialed a tone quickly and played some Bach, which sounded awesome. Fretboard is surprisingly easy to play, especially the upper register, thanks to the unique neck-body arrangement of SGs. I ended up buying it (€310).
    I understand it’s not for everyone, but at least give it a chance. It might surprise you.

      They did do that, it's called the gibson sg-z bass. Kinda like the 90s les paul special basses with the TB-like pickups and black hardware. Production didn't last long though. They also did the SB basses which were built much like fenders of the time in terms of wood and pickup placement.

    About 4 years ago I acquired a 1974 lawsuit-era Greco EB-0 that was made fretless. My biggest mistake was buying flatwounds for it. It was boom-fucking-city. I love the mojo but not the actual instrument. I had to sell it.

  • @dparsons343

    This bass isn't the greatest out the box but I had a vision for it.. I bought this bass as a project basically, with the intention to mod it heavily so that it sounds more vintage and to make it road worthy. Thus far I've done the Hipshot bridge, and upgraded the pick ups to Curtis Novaks, which didn't do as much as I thought it would, so I wouldn't recommend that, as the mod was more than the actual bass itself.
    I'll be upgrading the electronics soon cause the stock electronics are a fucking joke. The input jack refuses to stay screwed on tight, and at one point the 3 point switch came loose. There's also this strange honkiness that isn't present on a real EB3, which I'm guessing is from the pots or something. It takes a lot of tinkering to get a decent sound from it, but once you get all the knobs it the right spots, it can sound really awesome, especially with my MarkBass preamp. My favorite knob setting is Bridge cranked, tone all the way back, or almost all the way, with neck rolled back a bit and the tone cranked. Essentially with this setup, I can use the bridge tone as a treble knob and the neck volume as bass if it were like an active bass.
    Also I want to know who in their right mind would make the scale 34" instead of 30.5" like the original and the Epiphone EB0 model. So much of the tone from the original Gibson was from the fact it was short scale. Luckily I'm 6'3" with monkey arms so playing this bass isn't really a challenge, however, the question still remains. The neck dive is pretty bad too, it gets hard to play fast and clean when standing, but at least the neck isn't super chunky like a fender.
    Overall it's a decent bass for the price. Definitely an acquired sound that will make you sound different from the rest if you know what you're doing. I get compliments on the look and sound at pretty much every show I play now. One time a guy said it sounds like a very practical bass sound... haha yeah right, if he only knew

    What the second pickup does is equalize the bass sound. The eb0 has a muddy sound so they added the second one. It really isn’t a solo pickup. Also, to get a good bass out of this you can replace the tuners which stops neck dive and replace strings which makes it sound soooo much better. I would recommend it because of the looks, the ability to get a muddy metal tone, and for the overall usefulness, by which i mean being able to play it and not break it the first five minutes like some other basses like hofner or sometimes (although this may sound retarded) fender basses. I have had many bad experiences with them for some reason, even my band teacher says his calfornia mad p bass is total crap and isn’t worth as much as it really should (no hate on fender tho)

  • @plinkbottle

    If you Think this one is not that great, the earlier one with the slotted head stock was much harder to get a good sound. Some of the Japanese copies were even better than the Gibson or Epiphone. The right strings and the right amp with some miking through the pa will deliver an acceptable sound, but in a lot of cases there is a tone that doesn't cut through the mix although it sounds beautiful on its own.

    A nice looking, but poorly executed copy of the EB3 bass!
    I own 1 of these as well. The amount of work I had to have done to make it playable was considerable. The long scale neck is very weak and prone to twisting due to the uneven string tension, the bridge is poorly made and hard to adjust, and that back hum bucker is total rubbish! Too weak and too close to the bridge!
    I had 2 lots of setup on done it, 2 lots of fret leveling and truss rod adjustments! It plays well now but still moves. It will need a new custom made neck to be stable.
    The bridge pick up, I had completely rebuilt by Mr. Fabulous! What was once a weak, 6K wound, with weak A5 magnet, is now a 16K monster with a juicy A5 magnet. I also moved it 1 width further away from the bridge, and now it NAILS classic Ripper bridge sounds and some P-bass territory!
    The front pick up, is quite good, and is solid and got that classic Gibson thud! (The 1 thing they got RIGHT on this bass!) ALL it needed to improve clarity was to RAISE the magnet screws a bit closer to the strings. Sounds great!
    A nice bass, but NOT without its faults. Be PREPARED to do some work on 1 if you buy 1 new/used with little play. I got mine s/h, with a good case for $400, in shop condition! Still had the factory 'set up' & strings!

  • @ianr02
    @ianr02 3 месяца назад

    WRONG Patrick - to those who appreciate the sound of these basses they are very much OK. I know quite a lot of people don't like the woolly nasal tone but I think it's brilliant. It's not only very distinctive (classic Gibson tone) but you can really feel the sound. This might be one reason that Jack Bruce, Andy Fraser (of Free), Felix Pappalardi (Mountain) and a number of other famous bass players used one. if they were so mediocre maybe those bassists might not have chosen an EB3 at all...

      Not at all. Serious neck-dive when I purchased mine, but I solved it within 15 minutes:
      a) Installed a Hipshot SuperTone bridge which added loads of tone, sustain & adjustabiliy (and weight to balance the bass) = 7 minutes.
      b) Installed another strap button 4 inches above the stock one (so I have 2 going through the strap. Speaking of, a thick, suede on the body side strap is what I'm using.
      = 8 minutes.
      Neckdive solved 100%.
      I truly love playing my EB-3 and have used it for every gig over the past 6 months ('99 Warwick Streamer Stage II as a backup).
      As for the pickups: Get a quality pre-amp. I use an Eden WTDI (£98) and get every tone imaginable out of my EB-3.
      In summary: With a few, easy upgrades, this bass is a blast to play, sounds amazing and looks epic.

    This bass is like a really hot chick that you wish you could get with, but the second you start fooling around, you realize she's never going to be your type. The EB-3 is one of the timeless beauties, next to the Rickenbacker 4001 and the Jazz Bass. But thats all she's got going for her. The only time Gibson ever really nailed it was with the Thunderbird. And I suggest your next bass review should be just that.

    I found this bass laying around in our shared rehearsal room, last week. I picked it up and it was one of the shittiest basses I ever tried. In your video this bass seems actually quite nice, and sounds kinda good. Not in reality tho, super uncomfortable to play, neck dives, bad pickups overall a ridiculous bass. I got a T-bird & Ripper myself also had an RD, but this is just bad. Nice review tho! Like your channel a lot!

    I'm about to collect my own EB3 next week... I am a complete beginner and bought it (second hand) purely for aesthetics as I think it is the most beautiful guitar design out there. But I think when you are brand new like me aesthetics are important as it makes you want to learn and encourages you to keep going. Then when you are more talented and understand the theory and components you then invest in something more technically advanced. And it's the same premise in every area of life - cycling, cars, houses, pets, girlfriends... The best stuff always come after you gain experience 👍
    *and remember - the EB3 will feel so-so as it was built with a budget in mind... again, the same way Nissan dont put GTR spec gear in a Micra even though you know the manufacturer knows better and has the ability to do it.
