Exactly, and this is one of my big issues as an LGBTQ person (or perhaps not LGBTQ because I've so often been alienated by gatekeepers for not being queer enough). There's this hyper obsession with dividing people into two polar extremes, while blaming the "opposing" group for everyone's grievances. And it's neither healthy nor productive.

I Am Bisexual and I don't identify with LGBTQ, partly because of this and partly because of cishet hate. It feels like the identity of LGBTQ is more geared toward hating the common enemy rather than finding similarities and supporting each other.

It’s called intersectionality. Different identities interact with one another to create an entirely unique experience. For example, the experiences of a black women isn’t comparable to the experience of a black man, because one is a women and one is a man. Their experience of being a person of color is entirely unique.

@@petermaniaci7090 To me that quote reads more like a critique of intersectional politics. Even two able-bodied cis hetero black women of the same socioeconomic class, for instance, might have radically different life experiences. Therefore the idea of intersectionality doesn't take you very far, because the only meaningful categorization that you can construct that is adequately multifactorial is on the level of the individual person; otherwise you run the risk of making unfounded generalizations about even a very specific group of people. In my opinion that sort of logic makes intersectionality itself a kind of stereotyping. Born of good intentions, I'm sure, but detrimental nonetheless.

Indeed, both my friend and I are biology researchers, but she is a fundamentalist and I am an atheist. One day I asked her how does she deal with the scientific teachings that challenge her beliefs and she told me that for certain scientific beliefs like evolution and the big bang, that go against the adam and eve origins of the bible, she just laughs at them and ignores it and moves on.

hello an italian here. I would really like to understand, without being offensive, some things. For example, one thing here in Europe we sometimes fail to grasp about the American problem with racism is how this can still go on in the media. Racist people have always existed and will always exist because someone will always be afraid of what is different from him / her. But for example one thing I don't understand is why do you still use the word RACE? Why, for example, when you hear some political programs you hear about the people of the United States always divided into groups? For example, politicians talk about the votes of Latinos, Asians and Africans. What does it mean? you are all American citizens, aren't you? It sounds so offensive to me.
I have many friends around Europe (so different countries and different cultures) and we are very concerned about some habits that are coming from the United States. One example above all is the politically correct. it is something that is taking away the dialectic and the confrontation as soon as one feels offended defines the other person with very heavy accusations: racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, misogynist and many others. All this is the end of the evolution of society because it does not create freedom but friction.
I read sometimes people that speak of forgiveness or not forgiveness. They have to act in certain way because their ancestors were destroy.
It's a very interesting thing because sometimes I think it's family related.
Sometimes in the eyes of Europeans it is strange to see news that still speak of frictions linked to the american civil war of the south against the north. In our eyes it is as if the strength to leave the past behind us is really lacking. This does not mean forgetting because it would be the biggest mistake but building a better future on that. Because if I were to see Europe from a perspective of this type, I as an Italian would have problems with the Germans, the French, the Spaniards, and so many other European countries among them. I should have problems with my other Italian compatriots because half of Italy was fascist and later with other Italians because between the 60s and 80s we had "the years of lead" where the communist extremists carried out attacks.
Sometimes families transmit hatred or fear towards the other, but also the feeling of being less and with fewer privileges. I think the most accurate comment, seen from the outside, is precisely the privilege of money. Who has the money can have everything the others trudge behind. I hope you can change the discourse of health and education in USA (make them pay less) so as to be able to start smoothing out differences and contrasts.
I am really interested in your comments to try to understand better because we are far away and we do not understand all the nuances we have little informations. Thanks and sorry for my english.

Your so completely right when it comes money. It's the great equalizer and most issues that someone experiences due to their races can be negated with enough wealth. As an American I can say with much confidence that this country is going to crumble and burn before anything gets better. Our " representatives" dont represent us and they dont care about real issues as long as they get votes. I wish I could be more optimistic, but people focus so heavily on race that they ignore the real enemy. The real big bad in the untied states isnt rasicm it's the federal reserve and their scummy corporate cronies. If the majority of Americans knew just how much we were being fucked over by centralized banking we could have a the revolution over and done with by the end of the week.

We have these things called "democrats" here in America. And in order for democrats to stay in power and stay relevant, they need to put on a false face of being "anti-racist". However, racism is practically dead in America, which would mean that democrats wouldn't get elected. Because of that, democrats need to create racism out of thin air to keep themselves relevant and continue to emotionally manipulate people into voting for them. Democrats of today are more detrimental to the health of America than covid-19 can ever be. Democrats are Anti-Americans, which is why they hate the American flag and burn it at their rallies.

I believe that people rationalize their beliefs however they want to. I think that the question should be asked who here thinks that their identity is important and if they would trade with a more marginalized person, or less marginalized identity, and if they would be okay with how they are then treated.

Identity politics is bad for everyone. There’s no problem with having an identity and making that a part of being yourself. But when you add that to the divisive nature of politics it leads to bad things.
I hate identity politics because my experience with it is when women say that I can’t have an opinion on killing human life because I’m male.

I feel they're stopping the conversations too early, or leaving out the spicy parts. They discussed protecting their participants in one of the vids, while to an extent, an Erin type should be excluded, anything below that goes. These people are willingly joinning this conversation and sharing their views, protecting them from their own discussion is ridiculous. They should still guide the conversations, but right now, they're always only scratching the surface.
Painmaker even better put. I always leave these videos unsatisfied because I don’t get to hear, what I would consider the reasonable and educated person, go in depth about there thoughts and beliefs and try to explain it to other people. Like you said, scratching the surface.
I couldn't agree more. I am not an American nor do I live in America and still I find many of the issues discussed extremely educating in a global perspective!

As a non-american everything about America is so racialized it's crazy.
It’s due to propaganda and the media; but even before that, there were many radical organizations in the 60s and 70s.
Yeah cause unfortunately that's the way the country started out. Laws of racial segregation only ended in the late 60s ... and it still takes a while for it to ware off.
A good segment of the population was born during and before that time so it's still fresh and ingrained in their heads.

I love these discussions so much it’s not heated, very understanding and mature
IDK how America went such the opposite way of how I thought race relations would go. In high school racism was not a big deal and the racist kids were the ones getting beat up. We even had shows like the Boondocks who used racism for comedy. Everyone I knew at least thought it was the stupidest thing in the world to judge people by the amount of melanin in their skin, and people who did should be mocked, ridiculed, and maybe a ass kicking.

I’m very impressed with this video. They hands down have been the most intelligent group I’ve seen. They didn’t become frustrated or angry. They listened and acknowledged differences. They truly understand being human in my opinion They didn’t try to tear each other down but instead built on top of each other. If they made up most of America we would get things done..
I just wanna tip my hat to whoever was in charge of casting this episode: you guys did a great job finding intelligent, well-articulated people on both sides of the issue!

I would absolutely love to be a part of one of these things. I just love how these people are able to have a great conversation and find a middle ground (no pun intended) and be able to communicate in such a peaceful manner.
This was a very articulate and thought provoking group. If people were to listen and speak their perspective like this more often, there wouldn’t be such a huge divide among groups of people.

@@DTB1995 truly from what I've seen, people face to face usually can hold an incredible conversation, but over the phone or internet, it's just different because we are all dehumanized and dehumanize others.

Another winning conversation, Jubilee. Way to go. Class acts in this group, every one of them. I also find it so interesting (though, this is one of the points of these conversations) is that...perspective is absolutely everything. We may agree on a common end point but disagree on how we get there or how things are in their current state. We also may be interpreting these issues completely differently, and I don't just mean from experiential perspective. I've noticed in so many of these Middle Ground episodes that people say, "Well, I took the prompt to mean *this*." So we're not just coming from different experiential backgrounds but also just a general interpretation of the issue itself.

My hair used to do that. I would condition it in the shower before bed with mane n tail horse conditioner and let it dry while I slept. Mr Sosha Da baad Man I think they were so civil because they understand that opinions are nuanced and no one is truly 100% pro or anti anything. If you get that you’re not going to 100% agree with specific ideas within a movement it makes you more tolerant to the other side

When they talk, their affiliation pops up under their name. But that's the important thing, conversation should ideally be civil like this all the time. We shouldn't get mad when others hold an opinion we don't like. We should drill down to find out more nuance, assert that we think about it and our belief and then let them decide what they think. It's as simple as that. People, especially liberals, are becoming increasingly intolerant to others opinions. There is some good reason for this and a lot of bad. Intolerance to opinions seems mostly to be a discomfort with our own ideology. A lack of willingness to engage can be a sign of bad character. Like you don't have your facts straight.

Fantastic concept and excellent conversation with strong points all round. Great to see the panellists embrace at the end of the video. This channel is so important in showing that no one is 100% wrong or right all the time, and that instead it's the way you interact with and act upon views that oppose your own - that's how we build a better, more understanding world.

Left wing ideas are in fundamental contradiction with identity politics. Identity politics are based on individualism and are largely used as a tool to avoid talking about left wing economic ideas. Corporate centrists are not left wingers, even if many americans falsely believe so.

everyone in this video was so well spoken, even coming back to this middle ground 2 years later I feel refreshed to hear their points. Everyone communicated so well, there was no animosity, and it was such a healthy debate that I think we should praise more often.

@@lucasbrunoz no you can't blame people for being angry but just being angry doesn't solve anything and depending on how people use their anger, it can almost destroy their argument. I go to faculty meetings where people just complain and are angry about situations occurring in schools for the entire hour and nothing is resolved. It's great that people vent but you need to vent and then start working toward a solution. Just angry and venting with no ways to make the situations better doesn't help anybody.

The US as a country was built upon slavery of the minority races, and genocide of the indigenous peoples. That historical trauma is passed over in succeeding generations. As a result, race relations is at the forefront of modern American political discussion.
So if you're non-American, don't be surprised that race plays such an important part in political discussions that involve the US. It's easier to understand if you examine the historical context that underpins US society. Please educate yourself before you judge.

The differiences between us is what makes us better. The idea that someone disagrees with us shouldn't be a complete shut down. We should create a converstion with them. Listen to what they say and take it into account. It can feel hard when they won't listen to us. Let's listen to them... We often retreat into our own 'echo chambers'. We hear the information we want to hear over and over again. Maybe open that door a bit....

@@toresagen7346 Not sure if that's the reason - the video overall was pretty geared towards anti identity politics, so the editing and supposed 'hate for white men' don't align in my eyes.
Plus I felt the conservative Damani was perfectly placed there. Every line he spoke was to to the point, and he really got the point across. As someone who doesn't believe in identity politics, I don't give a damn that he isn't white.
Objectively speaking though, it's much easier to convince people who ARE into identity politics using people who are 'immune' to such built-in hate (aka black people, LGBT etc).

Nina Cass except that would be a little less interesting, because mental health diagnoses range from mild anxiety to severe multiple concurrent diagnoses of things like DID or bipolar disorder. I think it’s more interesting to here from people with one particular condition. Although some of them would inevitably have additional diagnoses, because schizophrenia tends to coexist with depression, anxiety, and many times personality disorders.

This has got to be the most nuanced and diverse group of opinions I have seen on a middle ground episode. I quickly lost track of who was supporting which side of the debate because they all constantly surprised me with how they answered the questions. It was honestly quite refreshing to watch.

I wish everyone had the opportunity to have this kind of conversations, because at the end, is the exposure to other points of view and civil discussion which creates a better society for everyone. For example, I'm an openly bisexual woman and in highschool I became friends with an evangelical girl that moved to the city from a rural area. She told me that she was very much against homosexuality but then changed her mind since she befriended me and saw that I was a person just like her. Meeting people with different experiences and ideology (even if it's opposite to yours) and having a conversation is what helps us understand the world better and actually generate change in society, instead of demonizing people on the opposite side of your ideology spectrum and refusing to see their point of view or how they got to think that way.
Wow, can we all commend everyone here though? This was one of the chillest conversations ever. I enjoyed this episode a lot. Everyone waa so open and willing listen to each other without ridicule or animosity.
