No background music. No graphics. No nonsense. Pure legit valuable information.
….and that’s why they’re the best. That, and Tom.
Buddy had the gangsta snap on those glasses 😂
Lol
Plumber by day gangsta by night lol
I came to the comments section immediately after seeing that 🤣
Right lmao. Then fuckers snap together loud

Thanks! I just did this in my old house and out of all the internet, this video was the most helpful!!! I did hire a plumber to tap my old supply line, but I felt comfortable doing the rest myself. 👍
Richard is the best : explains clearly, shows and educate brilliantly
So our home was built in 1928. It still has all original woodwork and cabinets (which is why I fell in love with it) but no dishwasher. Being the mom of 4, and having to work and take care of home I realize how much I truly miss having a dishwasher. Thank you for this video. Great job!
They make portable dishwashers my parents bought one 60 years ago.

I've said it before, but wow! What a wealth of knowledge and experience that the pro's on TOH possess! Not only are they incredibly gifted in their fields but they also have tremendous charm and personality!
Thank you to all of the pro's and to TOH!
This chap has a soothing voice. Could teach me stuff all day long.
This was a great episode! Im so thankful great people take time to make these videos for us!!
Just watched this, so helpful! We got a quote to install the dishwasher under our sink that has never had any dishwasher. Unfortunately, the charge was too high that we can't afford it. So I sure hope we could follow this, it looks so simple and easy to follow and install the coming dishwasher 🙏😊🤪
Remember what the 3 Stooges said, "Who says you have to be smart to be a plumber?"
@@AStanton1966 I love those guys
Did you do it?
Smooth to black, ribbed to white, exactly what I was looking for, thanks!!
jerzsubbie it doesn't matter one bit. It's ac.
It's matters for safety reasons. Typically the hot is switched not the neutral so when things are turned off they are also de-energized. The neutral is ground referenced so it's unlikely to give you a shock. If you reverse the polarity, all the parts in the appliance will remain live at 120v even when off.
You could also follow each wire back to the plug and see which side is the smaller prong. Smaller prong = hot
Lol I traced the wire... since right side is hot
You can also plug it in to an outlet and use a voltage tester to see which wire is hot.
Very good how to. Learned a lot by watching it, don't think I'll need a plumber to install my new one after watching this.
came here to learn about plumbing, left seeing the coolest glasses ever
This is so easy! I want to add a dishwasher to my mom's old house that also doesn't have a garbage disposal! Thank you so much!
Excellent video. I love seeing demonstrations done the RIGHT way. Well done!
Done the right way? Not sure what third world plumbing code this guy is working to doing an installation on a sink without a p-trap? NOT!!!
4:18 cool magnetic glasses.
I didn't know they made glasses like that.lol
4:20
I love Ask This Old House! Great, informative tv show.
Thanks a ton, after this video I installed my new dishwasher myself.
This video was perfect just what i needed!
4:20.. Those glasses are pimp
You know things are getting real when Richard puts them on.
This was so well explained. Thank you!
great tip on the power and smooth side wire being hot
Is it just me, or did that sink not have a P-trap?
Yeah, I noticed that too. Weird
No vent either, what is going on down there
Excellent teaching Sir... thank you 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🤙🏾
excellent educational video, thanks...
That was the best video yet for dishwasher install
Great informative video!
I feel like I could do this myself now.
very simple and useful explanation. ..thanks. .
Carlitos Carlitos T ?
very professional video good job
Thank you so much for telling me about the 3 grey wires on the supplier cord
Wow thank you for this video, seems very easy
Probably going to do this as well nice information on video thank you so much
Always exceptional instruction/demonstration Richard. Thank you !
where did you connect the outlet hose on the dishwasher? And did it come with the outlet hose? TIA
I believe that’s my problem. Thank you.
Excellent, thanks for the tutorial.
Fantastic explanation thank you!
OK I watched 3 of these videos and this one is the clearest. This might be the one that helps me install a dishwasher finally. Moved into my place 10 years ago and quickly upgraded my cabinets and countertops and left gap for a dishwasher. Never filled it in.
Did you succeed?
@@flat-earther Yes installed a nice Samsung dish washer. No problems since. Easy install.
This is a great tutorial!
This Old House is still the best. All of the Chip and Jo, Property Bros, and most if not all the HGTV stuff can't hold a candle to T.O.H.
So helpful!! thank you!
Thank you so much!!!
Thank you! This helped me so much!
4:23. Boss has magnetic glasses
Thnks a lot for posting this.
Wow you did an Amazing job that Anyone con do this!!!
Great video...gonna try this with my son...I know we can do this!
How did it go?
If she didn't answer you, maybe she's under water?
Awesome video! Thanks :)
Very informative great job
5:43 when you go for the fist bump but they're just not feeling it.
lol
i think he was going to point to the electrical box but bailed because she was already on it.
He was just pointing at the outlet saying to plug it in. And Besides, Tommy is the fist bump guy.
Very helpful! Thank you!!
Thanks guys!
So helpfull thanks you!!!
So far most detailed vid ive watched. But water looked like it went to thr floor. Why couldn’t it go up like the drain hose? Because i have to drill a hole through the cabinet. And does it have to the hot water? Doesnt the dishwasher heat up the water to the appropriate temperature for pots or dishes?
Good video. Would have been nice to see how to hollow out the cabinet though
That was well done 👍🏾
Silly question. Was that part of the counter sawed away to make it fit?
I have an LG washer and dryer. I recognized that jingle immediately lol.
Awesome tutorial Buddy!! I have a question how much does it cost to install a dishwasher
Amazing!
Looping the dishwasher drain hose up, fixed the sewage smell I'n my dish washer. Fixed now!
Having a P-trap under your sink will also prevent sewer gas smell. But he obviously doesn't notice that it does not have a P-trap. I'll say it again he's a hack
@@guitar1301 The other hack
thing is installing the dishwasher so that the control panel still shows. That’s supposed to be hidden under the lip of the counter top. It’s supposed to be concealed when the dishwasher is closed. That drives me crazy. I’ve seen it in a few videos on RUclips. I’m having one installed next week and now feel like I need to make sure the installer doesn’t do that to it.
@@guitar1301 I noticed that too, but Richard is anything but a hack.
Why doesn't the sink drain have a water trap for sewer gas?
Richard wouldn't make that mistake so it must be somewhere down below. Maybe the explanation was edited out? Weird plumbing if you ask me.
Was thinking the exact same thing myself. It was missing when they started, but didn't add one in when they retrofitted... wonder why.
It's probably in the basement, just below the floor.
A drum trap was located in the basement; see 13:00min in full episode. If you put a P-trap again under the sink, it becomes S-trap which is not acceptable per code.
ok
I noticed the finished floor was missing on back right corner, did you add a small piece of 1/4 " or 3/8 to accommodate that difference, or does it not matter in the back?
Dick Reed The unit should be supported front and back. If the back feet can screw down far enough to reach the floor then it's fine. Otherwise, some kind of blocking/flooring is needed. The other reason it's good to have the floor go under the machine is that it's easier to spot a leak if one develops.
Very helpful
I liked this video. Very nice explanation.
Raising Hope Love
Thank you!!
I don’t see a p trap under her sink. Is there a trap under the house? I’m putting in a dishwasher in my home that was built in 1971 it’s got it own p trap and drain. I think your video is great . I did learn a couple of things.
Dang I have had a dishwasher in my mud room since 2013. Still not installed. I’m showing my husband this video
Why rush things.
Or do it yourself.
This guy is the real mvp.
I'm surprised that Richard didn't add the water trap for the sink, the pvc just did a 90 degree with no water trap. Great video though, love this show
I may try adding a dishwasher to my kitchen now!
My husband and I are in the process of buying our first home. A beautiful 1941 brick cottage in a lovely historic downtown district. We can't wait to make it our home, but we will need to put some elbow grease into it to make it perfect for us. This channel is going be our lifeline as we move through projects. Thank you!!!
Question, though: how do you know if there is a power source and water hookup in the place where you want to install the dishwasher? I assume you can typically just look and tell, but our house has a wall-attached cabinet where we would like to install the dishwasher so I can't tell without pulling said cabinet out.
Did you succeed? You can connect water lines to existing faucet lines with the 3 way shut off valve Richard used in this video.
Professional 👍🏼
Nice that theirs lots of room under the sink, it’s not usually like that.
Of course there's lots of room, look how much they saved by not having a trap in there!
Richards body of work is top shelf.
We also use his term of "good" as a drinking game trigger. Great vids for sure man !
Except for the flexible power cord deal. Must be a regional thing. Rich never actually shows how to power the appliance on the plug side
Insert plug, I believe. (cause he talked about the polarized plug).
Why wouldn't you put a P trap on that? Is the sink, DW properly vented? Air gap?
2:10 - Not the topic of this video, but there's no p-trap on that sink. Is the trap somewhere else in the system? (I'm assuming that wouldn't meet modern code.)
incredible glasses
Hi Richard. I've connected up a second hand dishwasher in a covered outdoor area for my cabin/sleepout. I've connected the water in with a branch off the main water pipe. I've dropped the water out under the deck and into a pipe to drain away. Unfortunately the dishwasher is not cleaning well and I'm assuming this setup is the probably the reason! Would be grateful to know your thoughts?
Is the water going in to the dishwasher hot?
no @@Legman688
If smooth os "Live" then what are other 2 wires? I don't want to assume green is still green... could someone please be so kind as to specify?
Our kitchen design has a cabinet between the sink and the dishwasher. I assume we will have to run the plumbing and electrical lines inside the back of the cabinet? The cabinets back up to a pony wall. Any advice?
Jennifer Cory Yes. Get a plumber.
Jennifer Cory That's a bad layout. The dishwasher should be right next to the sink cabinet.
I noticed there was not P trap under the sink, is it installed under the floor or was it missing?
Some particularly old houses have a single large P trap for the entire house, that is my guess.
I noticed that there's no trap under the sink. Is there one under the floor or something like that?
I noticed that too, I have an atmospheric vent instead of a roof vent for mine
Presumably the drain pipe terminates in a p-trap to a vented stack in the basement, just like bathtubs, showers, and toilets do.
A plumber gave me a plumbing tip for any newly-installed dishwasher. Before you run the washer, dump a cup of water into the bottom inside of the washer. This will help prime the new pump.
All current dishwashers are tested at the factory before they are shipped.
Thanks 🙏
"Normally I'd use a 24" crescent or pipe wrench but all I've got with me is this inadequate 12" wrench but I think I can get this very large 3/8" fitting tight enough".
Dishwasher are handy to have.
And handwashers are dishy to have...
Maxid1 A lot of people with dishwasher do the dishes when they go to bed, or when they leave for work in the morning.

Another great video By this old House!
Not supposed to reuse a compression fitting. I would have replaced it.
I isolate it and add another shutoff for the dishwasher. Those are notorious for problems and then you have to shut your sink down too. If you have renters add a shutoff for the unit
time: 4:20 I love those snap in the middle glasses.
Someone please help. I am planning on buying a house soon. Starting the process. A lot of houses in my area, and in my budget, do not have dishwashers. My question is this: how hard or easy is it to put a dishwasher into a kitchen where there was none before? Does it require a complete remodel of the kitchen? Does it require tearing down walls? Or is it pretty much what this guy is doing by just making some adjustments to the pipes and electrical? Because I will buy a house if it doesn't have a dishwasher if it's fairly easy and cost effective to put one in. Obviously I know a cabinet will have to come out to be replaced by the dishwasher.
There is no P trap. Did Richard mention anything about that?
He didn't mention it in this video. But there's a good chance there's a basement under this home, so there's an easy to access area where they may have put a trap underneath the floor between the floor joists similar to what's under a shower or tub. Hopefully!!!
No bottom trim panel on the dishwasher?
So you only put it in the hot water ? No cold water?
Why are the vent tubes / aerators obsolete?
Very helpful thanks. In australia our dishwashers only have 3 connections and all 3 originate at the back of the appliance. Cold water in, drain out and a 10a 240v lead and plug. Too easy. You guys make a simple task so complicated.
A.S Enfield lol I don’t know if you watched the video, but the dishwasher has a hot water tap, a drain line, and a electrical plug. I’m confused what is so different/ complicated here?
iLikeC00kieDough I think the point is the electrical connection is an IEC plug not bare wires connected by those pathetic and dangerous wire nuts (which are illegal in Australia). And it is all at the back not the front.
Whilst it doesn’t make a difference to installation per se we also connect cold water not hot, with the dishwasher heating it as required. We also have very strict temperature limits on our “hot” water. If a tankless hot water heater is used the maximum temp is 55’ C and if a tank it think it is now 60’ C. The tank temp is hotter though to kill bacteria etc and is brought down via a tempering valve.
In the US it’s actually simpler. It’s just a hot water line. Why would you need a cold water line on a dishwasher?
@@bcbock Their's heat the water. It is supposed to save energy, but it's minor if any.
Good video. Where i live disheashers are hard wired.
The Man's Garage I've seen that in most installations. My Aunt Dawn had a dishwasher installed like this, but to a traditional drain pipe setup. A gfci outlet was installed under the sink
Where’s the P-trap for this sink?
Some old houses have an entire house ptrap instead
@@xxjusxstarxx My point was that Rich being a master plumber, should’ve commented about it not having a P-trap or explained why it didn’t need one, if that’s the case.
@@Watch-Me-Nowthat's a valid point
Everytime I have changed the compression valve.. it drips from the ferral. Any suggestions?
I usually have to tighten loosen to 20 times to get it to finally seal.
smear on pipe dope in the treads may help it become tighter
It's a good idea to snug your compression fitting. Turn water on. It may leak, but slowly tighten the fitting until it stops leaking. You can OVER TIGHTEN those fittings, resulting in leaks. Pipe dope is also an option, but done correctly, you shouldn't need it. Hope that helps.
Wrap ferrule with teflon tape
Personally, I would remove the ferrule and use a new one so it compresses properly with the new fitting.
@@bcbock can be hard to do without scratching the pipe.
So a dishwasher only needs a hot water connection? I was thinking about putting one in, didn’t know if I needed hit and cold like a washing machine. I’ve just never used a dishwasher before.
Most basic dishwashers in North America use hot water supply, cold water supply is when your dishwasher can heat up the water in its own,(heat pump) much more expensive machines
Andrey Yaromich got it. Thank you. Like the idea of it having its own heat pump though. House has a smaller hot water heater. Gives me something to think about.
Does it just require hot water, no cold water correct?
what is that hot water connector called?
Would love to see the 4 hour video of this installation.
Shouldn't take more that 2 hours at the MOST. I can do it in that time, including a new breaker/circuit from the panel.
I had my plumber install my dishwasher. It took them about a half hour. But they had already added a dedicated valve for the washer when I redid the cabinets and sink. So everything was planned out. It takes longer if you have to do a lot of modifications. For example, a dishwasher needs a dedicated GFCI outlet in my area. And we had to have a separate one for the disposal. We also had to have an air gap installed in the sink as our city doesn’t allow the high loop shown in these videos. But since it was a remodel, that wasn’t a problem. But it could take you a lot longer.
