What's bizarre about this is that conservation groups had to sue the US Fish and Wildlife Service to make them do their jobs and conserve *wildlife*. Whoever is running it shouldn't have had to be legally forced to do what should be seen as doing their job. It certainly makes me question their leadership.

Because they want to make everything political. It has nothing to do with politics. Other than “Stop the program.” Which sounds bad. As usual most se that and run with it. Simple linear thinking. They dont reproduce is the problem. It was only successful to begin with, because they were artificially inseminating and releasing constantly. There are no mating pairs. Oddly, just read an article in "Wired" magazine about doing just that. A whale's body, for examples, holds a lot of carbon. A whale could be "sold" for a carbon offset, which at going rates would be $2 million dollars! The owner(s) would have good reason to keep the whale healthy and making more whales.
Sea grass, though, the man who came up with this idea says, sea grass is the premier carbon capture in the wild. A lot of island states could become very rich with this idea. And they'd have a strong incentive to protect and spread the sea grass -- benefiting thousands of other ocean creatures.
It's barely begun at this point, but the possibilities ...

In practical terms, when you see somebody with bumper-sticker slogans or other tells outing them as a poacher or supporter of poachers, get (quietly) nosy! Document everything, gather as much evidence as you can, figure out what evidence is legal to have captured and what activities are against the law, and once you have an ironclad package of legal evidence showing an illegal activity, submit it to authorities. Try to get the case as wrapped up with a bow as possible, with names and vehicle licence plate numbers and photos attached. Regulators don't like doing work that might not pay off.

@@jacksmith-vs4ct I'm sorry to say that wolves still are quite rare in Germany, they are just slowly coming back, and already some people call for shooting the even rarer 'problematic' ones, e g. if fences don't work with 100% reliability. So I don't think we do so much better than the US in this regard.

I mostly watch politics, science/technology, and backpacking through-hike videos on RUclips. The last several years, the number of Appalachian Trail through-hikers catching Lyme disease has absolutely exploded because the deer and deer tick populations have exploded. For disease control in the east, we really need wolf populations to keep the deer populations in check.

Wolves and venomous snakes! Our reptile population does so much to control the rodent population, which are the reservoirs for lyme disease. I know snakes like copperheads are dangerous but people have to learn to let them live if they don't want to suffer from how common these diseases are becoming.
Don't even get me started on how many nonvenomous snakes are being killed for looking like copperheads or even just for being a snake.

As a graduate from Arkansas State University, I have a fondness for the Red Wolves. Their range historically was quite large.
A much better mascot than the previous choice. A topic that fails to meet national interest, but maybe worthy of investigation for curiosity sake alone.
It is possible to be a hunter /animal lover. It is also possible to be a logger / conservationist, petroleum worker / environmentalist. I am all of the above. It is important to respect the wildlife, environment, air and water purity while we harvest, and utilize the resources around us. Stewardship is using resources responsibly, not just locking it away and hoping that everything will find equilibrium.
Any number of backyard chickens are not valuable enough to justify extermination of predators, wolves coexist quite well.
For Pete's sake we see bears daily in my workplace and have no problems from them. Coyotes, foxes, moose... Share the space.

I grew up on a Missouri farm, reading Organic Gardening and Mother Earth News. We respected and were humane to the animals raised or hunted, followed all game regulations, and neighbors thought we treated our livestock like pets. This was too the good, as they were happy to sell us the cow who was "Too friendly" (she licked my brother's beard👅) or the barncats who wanted to cuddle. Yippee! So I understand just where you're coming from. Those who have dealt up close and personal with the ethics of fossil fuels and raising or hunting meat know that pragmatism and high ideals are not entirely incompatible. Pleased to meet you. 🖖✌

Our state dog in Louisiana is the Catahoula. It is believed that the Indians bred red wolves with other wild and tame dogs to make them. They are very loyal dogs and versatile. They hunt, herd, guard, and great companions. We once had the red wolves here, but they’ve been gone a long time. Or they hide well, cause we aren’t supposed to have panthers but I’ve seen them here.

You are correct especially about the chickens. A few years ago the hubby and I added chickens as we hadn’t had any in a few years. Lost all to various predators, mostly fox and raccoons. This never happened in the past. We realized that the difference was we no longer had a dog. We do now and he marks everything and the critters stay away.
