As a Georgia Native and someone who lives and works in almost every southern state I would love to someday see a red wolf in the wild
I was working in Franklin County Florida when Red Wolves were released into St Vincent Island National wildlife preserve about 1986. I heard in later years that some of the wolves had appeared on the mainland and been seen in the Apalachicola National Forest.

Great work! I loved hearing about this. Although I have been on St. Vincent's Island I have yet to see a Red Wolf. I have seen captive ones at the Tallahassee Museum. Beautiful.
I think we spotted a red wolf in Suffolk Virginia on a trail camera. It was late at night, and was much bigger than the coyotes we were seeing. This was a few months ago, so maybe some of the lost red wolves have actually spread out more than you might think. It’s maybe 75 miles away from where they are at currently. If a pack formed away from there, they could be hiding in the dismal swamp too.
In the spring of 2010, I had an amazing experience, while camping in the Nantahala National Forest between Murphy and Franklin. Actually, my three Scottish Farm Collies and I lived throughout 2010 in the national forests in western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and northern Georgia. A female Red Wolf began coming to our campsite to play with my dogs in the mountain creek. She would not get near me, but was neither hostile or fearful. Even though my dogs were three years old, the four canines splashed and chased each other in the creek. It was amazing site. Unfortunately, the battery in the camera had run out. This is what was most interesting. All of the heard dogs that I have had through the years, hate coyotes . . . and would kill them if they had a chance by busting their ribs. However, my three canine companions perceived the female Red Wolf as a "herd dog" - one of their own.
That’s so cool! It’s amazing how they were able to see the female red wolf differently. It just shows how intelligent they are. Being able to tell that this canine wasn’t a coyote.
