These people are absolutely insane. White actors/models have been replacing PoC characters for countless years. And most of the time when they do it, it’s been in a denigrating way (blackface, yellow face, and the like), and/or done with actual historical figures as opposed to fictitious characters that were supposed to be amorphous. These people will claim “it’s not racist, I just want to be faithful to the historical setting, Poland is a white country” (actual takes I’ve heard in response to Witcher). And yet when a character named Shinzo Suzuki who is supposed to be 100% ethnically Japanese looks like your typical Scandinavian, it’s crickets from them. Like I didn’t hear any of these talking points about the Persona games. To these people, a PoC or female major character can only possibly be a political statement.

Nothing made me realize the importance of diversity in games was when my best friend. (Who doesn’t really game past Mariokart) got really excited when her pokemon character’s mom was brown like her. Something so small that I’d never think about it as someone who plays games for mechanics, but for a casual it made her day.
Nice. I don't think diversity in games is requisite, but I also don't think it's a bad thing. Basically, who cares?
big thing with diversity and representation is that it let's people of non-white groups feel like they can be significant within the storytelling landscape. in a world where white skinned characters are set as the default, and where deviating from that at all is seen as a political statement worth scrutinizing, it can be genuinely comforting to see a character that looks like you be allowed to exist in some important form within your favorite work of media.
it shows that people like you are allowed to exist, allowed to do the fun and cool things you see happen in this story, and allowed to be more than a punchline for a throwaway gag.
@@TheMahayanistA lot of people, clearly. It's not requisite in any specific game, but it lacking in general clearly is a problem to some people, otherwise it wouldn't be talked about. When you, for example, are born belonging to a certain demographic that is treated by society as if it should not exist and then you don't see people like you represented properly in media, the message that is being sent becomes pretty hard to ignore.
Representation is undeniably good because even if you don't personally care about it, there is no downside to it and there are people who will appreciate it.
If you agree that prejudice exists and that minorities have gotten bad/insufficient representation, then representation for them existing is objectively good. If you don't believe either of those things, then you are denying reality. And if you do believe those things are true and you're fine with it, then you're just kind of a douchebag. To anyone with a normal moral compass, this isn't a "both sides bad" situation.
Basically, people want to feel like it's possible for someone who looks or is in like them in some way to be the protagonist of the story, and that's okay. Even if they don't admit it directly, anti sjws know how important this is too, which is why they get mad at the idea of changing some of their favorite white male characters. Because then *they* start feeling like their being erased.
Edit: Even though nothing is being changed about the original versions of these characters, their the same characters, just different appearances and possibly different back stories.

As a trans man the things he said about Tran women completely blew my mind. How can someone say that and not recognize how hateful that is. (Also why do trans women get so much more hate then trans men? As a trans man I noticed I tend to just get turned into a confused child by right wing media, so why do trans women get turned into monsters and groomers by right wingers?)
For right wingers, it is very much focused on men, i.e. themselves. It is mostly a male oriented ideology. This is why they focus on trans women, as they fear being attracted to them. The same is true for homosexuality, it focuses mostly on the male part and not lesbianism, as that is what they can identify with and fake being repelled by.
You might get confused by right wing media, but be aware, confusion is their entire purpose. Confusion and fear, i.e. deflection and misdirection. It does not make sense, and that's the point.
It is a safety blanket for the insecure and bigoted...
Trans women are in the media more, so they get more exposure compared to trans men (both positive and negative exposure). So a lot of people just ignore trans men. Some people don't even know trans men exist.
Us people in the LGBT community refer to that sort of thing as erasure. Happens to other groups too (bi people, non-binary people, asexuals, and aromatics get that treatment too sometimes).
Easy trans women get more hate because they hate gay people and they equate the two. Lesbians also tend to get less hate as well as bisexuals and asexuals. It's fascinatingly bigoted. Be safe friend.
