What a life saver. I had just made 5 strip blocks 10 inches and could not figure out how to put them together. Well with a little altering I can make a beautiful quilt thanks so much for this timely video. And it’s so beautiful. Thanks Jenny
I love when you do bonus projects. Some patterns are darling, but I never know what to do with leftovers. You always remind me to USE THE UP! Lol thanks and God bless. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
Couldn't wait to get home to tell you. Met a sweet lady named Gayle and my friends house in Newland, NC the other day. We started talking about quilts and she pulls out this tablet and starts showing me pictures of when Jenny came to their quilt guild. I couldn't believe it. It was like being there with Jenny. lol So close to me (4 1/2 hours away) and I didn't even know it. Come back Jenny, I'll make sure I'm there!
I know you showed this a few weeks ago but I finally went thru my stash and found the perfect fabrics to make this sweet quilt for my sister-in-law for my birthday. Can't wait to see how it turns out! Jenny has helped me make many wonderful quilts.
Thanks so much Jenny!! Before fixing dinner here in Italy, this is a nice pause! And you show us two projects! What a super woman you are!! Grazie mille!!!
What an easy quilt to make and the color combinations boggle the mind! I kept eyeballing that table runner during the video and was happy when you said it was made with leftover strips. I walked into my sewing room the other day and said to myself, "Girl, you're not getting any more fabric until you start using up what you have! There's no room in here to change your mind!" I better get crackin'!
Haha! Thanks for tuning in, Joyce! We sure hope you have lots of fun sewing through your stash! :) Be sure to share with us on our social media pages! :)
Thank you so much Jenny and everyone that help make this video .. I'm so thrilled to know what you do with leftover, making runners.. Please continue with this idea each week,, making what ever you make and what ideas with left overs.. have a great week.. see you next week.. KW
Love this! I have a drawer full of jelly rolls just waiting to be released so this is a fantastic use and you get two projects ! Yea. Thanks so much as I am a real Missouri Star lover! Thanks 🙏
Great quilt! I love how it has such little waste, my kind of project(I save all my scraps, just to much trash in the world), that table runner is a awesome bonus idea. Thanx for another great tutorial! 😸
A really lovely quilt! I like how straight-forward the rail fence block is, but I also find it to be a bit bland on its own, so it was a great idea to put some framed four patches inbetween. I've got a bunch of green fabric pieces that I bought from a thrift store a while back, and I think they would go really well together in a quilt like this.
Hmmm.... I watched this video this morning at 6 am with my coffee cup at the ready and my Labrador retriever by my side. I decided to walk to my stash stash and found OOOOh, several jelly rolls of pastel shades and primary color shades which began to scream at me that they were needing freeing from their imposed stashdom status. So I decided to choose one and plan the freeing of said fabric. I only need to choose the border and backing fabrics. I like how simply and quickly this quilt goes together. Soon, very, very, very soon fabric freedom.
Love this quilt! This fabric line reminds me of a sliced up watermelon. At 8:05 looks like Jenny is singing o/‘ Stop, in the name of love o/‘ Then there’s the ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ thumbnail too. lol Guess I’m having a show tunes moment.
i have a fence rail quilt that i have been working on and not liking the way it is going im thinking about changing a few tings and trying this pattern, thanks again Jenny!!
Oh, Jenny! I just got fabric to make a rail fence! I hadn't made one before because they are too simple so I thought to snowball two corners to add pizzazz. But this pattern "On the Fence" is more interesting! Thank YOU!!
I don't care for the double black either. If I make one of these the perimeter will be standard fence rail and the 4 patch blocks will begin with the second block in row 2, and every other row like Jenny's. Will probably only have 9 4 patch blocks, but that will be enough accent for me, if the 1st inner border is also black. I have a bright batiks jelly roll that I think would look really good in this pattern. Thanks Jenny!
Thanks for tuning in, Karen! We look forward to seeing your version of the On the Fence Quilt! Feel free to share it with us on our social media using #msqcshowandtell.
Wouldn't it be neat to alternate the four patch and rail fence blocks checkerboard style instead? It would take more sashing fabric, but you'd have enough of the jelly roll fabrics to make a bigger quilt.
Can you please make a video about the machine settings you use; fabric and thread types & their best uses; & also your favorite tools and techniques for making quilts? Explain tension we need for certain fabrics and threads, and common issues beginning sewers might have with the machine. (I want to start sewing large projects but having issues with the machine makes me want to give up at times. My fabric, thread, and tension are not matching, so it slips or snags or twists up underneath.) What type of fabric do you typically use in the turorials? How do you prep it before you sew? Do we need to prewash fabrics off the bolt?
Hi! Since every machine is different it would be very hard to tell what your settings should be. Look at the pictures in your machines owners manual. Set your machine to those settings. Have a practice size quilt sandwich ready and do some sewing. You might like to have different colors of thread top and bottom to really help you see which thread or tension is off. Threads are wound differently, some like to feed off the machine standing upright, others like to be horizontal. Hold the spool upright in one hand and pull off about two feet worth of thread in the other hand. Don’t let go of the thread bring your hands together, about six inches apart, if the thread stays in a lazy loop it is a stand upright spool, but if it twists up it is a horizontal spool. Test it, hold the spool horizontally in your hand and repeat the test. If it doesn’t twist up as your hands come together then it is in the correct orientation. My machine didn’t have a horizontal thread holder so I cut a sturdy hanger, bent it up and hung it from the tallest thread loop. Now my spools that like to be horizontal are happy. Everybody has their own favorite thread brands, my guess it is again determined by your machine and which threads work best for it. I have found that regular sewing threads do not feed well through all the tensions and layers of fabrics on my long arm. Look into some of the quilting threads instead, they are meant to handle the stress of quilting. Last, every time I fill a bobbin, even in the middle of a project I have to check and adjust tensions, it is just a part of it all.
I know it's hard to be a beginner sewer and are self-taught. I am the same. First of all, what brand of machine do you have? I was fortunate enough to get a Bernina and have never had to adjust the tension on it, I just left it on the factory setting and it does great. Next, is there a sewing center in your area that offer lessons for beginners? Or have you looked on RUclips for lessons from the makers of your machine? When I bought my Bernina it didn't come with a owner's manual. I'm guessing because the sewing center I bought it from keeps them so you will have to come to them for lessons. I did go once to them for a "free" lesson on how to use the different settings to make button holes, etc. They have since gone out of business so my husband found the owner's manual online for me and printed it off. You are asking good questions though about the types of fabric needing pre-washings. Don't give up, there is always a way to find out what you need to know to help you improve your skills.
I love the Chloe fabric collection, but I don't think the dark color fits the quilt at all! It would have been really nice if a different color was used
I always put my scraps into the backing to make it more interesting - also it saves me from having to buy quite so much backing fabric, thus more $ to buy fabric for a different quilt
While the prints on this one aren't for me; I like the pattern a lot. I'll just add this to my liking list and sew it up in a jelly roll and background that catches my eyes. That way it's me.
Love you and all your videos, thank you so much .....I would like to know the brand and model of your sewing machine , it looks to run very smooth and quick!...Thanks again Jen! 💕
I like this quilt. It looks fast and easy to do. But I feel that the black strips around the 4 patches is to strong a color or to wide of strips for the quilt. All I see when I look at it is those black squares in the corners. You don't see the lovely material, the patch work, or the quilting . I think that making the table runner was a good extra project to do with scraps . xoxo
the double black is a really hard design choice on the edges. I would ask you to consider an alternative... Make the four patches large along the edge. Corners would be 9 patch and sides a vertical stacked 6 patch. It would eliminate the bulk double black.
Dear Joy I design most of my own quilts. I enjoy watching Jenny. The way they choose to do it feels like bad design. So I respectfully suggested a possible design alternative.
Hello there! It is always great to see how a different fabric choice can change the look of a quilt. We can't wait to see your On the Fence creation! :) Thank you for tuning in, and have fun sewing!
For a true rail fence look, in the three vertical columns that have strip sets all facing the same direction, I would like to see what it looks like to alternate the blocks of 4 strips as they appear in the Horizontal rows. This could be accomplished by rotating the blocks in rows 1, 3, 5, and 7 in columns 2, 4, And 6. I think if those 12 blocks were rotated, each block would be next to one that is in the opposite direction, and would look more like the traditional arrangement for Rail Fence pattern. Perhaps the side-by-side stripes (as in the original arrangement) could be used as a border.
I know a few quilters who would love the black. They feel it really makes the other colors pop. Not for you? That's okay. And it's okay that others will find it lovely and pleasing.
Hi Brenda! Thanks for tuning in! Jenny was having fun experimenting with the boldness of black fabric, and we can't wait to see what you create! Have fun sewing!
Hi, Shima Rahman! We do sell the 2.5" strips that were featured in this tutorial. You can find them by clicking on this link below. www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/detail/97844/maywood-studio/maywood-studio/chloe-25-strips
I am a nice person, really, but am I allowed to say that the colors are gross? I know we’re all supposed to be nice and nurturing here in Quiltland, but it looks like a bitter old lady mated with a watermelon here. Am I allowed to say that? Anonymity has emboldened me. Sorry. Peace, love and all that stuff.
LOL at your description, Brain Freeze. The black sashing doesn't appeal to me either. I'd try the dark green or dark red or maybe even the stripe with a different outer border. I have found "Quiltland" to be nice, nurturing AND accepting of all opinions. If we all thought the same way, or picked fabric/sewed/quilted the same way, what a boring world it would be!
That is the beauty of quilting we can all start with the same block/quilt design, then end up with each and every quilt looking different. Or the same selection of fabrics and each of us has a different vision of how to use those fabrics. As I watched Jenny I was changing fabrics to suit my tastes and what I have in my stash plus the placement of the rail fence blocks. I would have moved the horizontal block to the position of the vertical block so that the horizontal blocks wouldn't be stacked on top of each other. And like others have mentioned I would make the inner-border a contrasting fabric. To each there own, Jenny is only making suggestions for fabric selection.
What a life saver. I had just made 5 strip blocks 10 inches and could not figure out how to put them together. Well with a little altering I can make a beautiful quilt thanks so much for this timely video. And it’s so beautiful. Thanks Jenny

I love this quilt. The sherbet colors of the fabric you used are so pretty. I also like that it doesn't have a light background fabric. Great video!

Thanks for the great request Raquel Gatica! That would be a neat tutorial to do sometime.
I’m interested in buying the presser foot that is on your machine. I have a Baby Lock Aria, but have been unable to find this presser foot.

Not sure about the black border against the black edge of the block. Maybe a contrasting solid in another color?
That sounds like a fun idea, Wanda! Thanks for tuning in!
Not really crazy about this color combo, but I do really like the runner
There is just a lot going on.

Don't like this with the inner border the same color as the black boxes. I'd make the inner border a different color so the boxes all looked the same.
That's a fun idea! Thanks for tuning in!
