This looks fantastic. Unfortunately, buying all of the tools needed to build this thing would end up costing more than just buying a pre-built, but doesnt take away from how awesome this is!
I just finished building this for my Big Green Egg XL and your directions were very easy to follow. Thank you for doing this. I just need to figure out a way to add support to the wood where the hole was cut to fit the BGE.
I think I finally figured it out. I have an XL. If you look at your first drawing it shows the finished length of 60", it shows the mid-support for the table top and a cut out of 26 1/4". If you go to the forth drawing it says that the offset support for the table top is 30 3/4" inside edge to inside edge. So if you're cutting the hole to the smaller side member shown on drawing one there's only 22". Either the member shadowed on the first drawing is misplaced OR you need to cut the hole on the other side.
@@dogwoodnation the first drawing is wrong. The mid table top support is to be 30 1/2 from the face of the 2 x 4 from the side. There is only 22" of clearance on the left (from above). The hole needs to go on the other side.
Nice job and great graphic with dimensions. Is the table deep enough that it could go against a wall and have the lid open or does the open lid stick beyond the table? I'm curious for the XL in particular. If the open lid goes beyond the table do you know by how much? Appreciate any help on this while I'm planning.
Mine is away from my house. I knot that I tried to have it up against the wall of my house, but I couldn't open it all the way because of this problem. Now, I have the Smokeware Chimney Cap which does stick up a bit higher. In addition, I have a Large Egg, not an Extra Large. My recommendation is to open your BGE and measure how far it goes behind the hinge. Then, using the plans, apply that length to the edge of the hole cut out from the Egg to see how much overhang you would have. Thanks!

You don't need to. I'll add that I did not. The distance between the shelves is what is recommended by Big Green Egg, and they also state you should never place an Egg directly on the wood.
Thank you for your reply. But if I added the table nest legs to the bottom of the egg, wouldn’t it raise the height of the egg coming out of the top? Maybe by line 3”(not sure how tall the nest legs are). That said, should I make the lower shelf 3” lower than on the plans? Thanks!
I'm glad you found this helpful! You should never place a Big Green Egg directly on wood. I have mine in a Big Green Egg table nest. You can buy those from a Big Green Egg retailer. This is a similar product on Amazon: amzn.to/3ewmrKg . Some people place a paver on the shelf, and I've even seem some place a table nest on top of the paver. I figured that some protection would be needed. I need to be sure to account for that when cutting the hole. I would hate to do all this work and find my hole is too large or too small. Sounds like I’ll want a practice hole!
Great looking table but I missed how the Big Green Egg is supported. It looks like you have some feet on the bottom. I do not own a BGE so do the feet come with the unit? It would have been nice to see you place the unit in the table and how you determined the overall height of the table and unit.

My BGE is resting in a table nest. BGE recommends using a table nest or a paver. You should never set the BGE directly on wood. As for getting the BGE into the table, the key is to remove everything from the BGE, and remove the lid as well. I had a friend help me lower mine into the table. First, set the BGE on the top of the table. Then, re-grip and lower the BGE into the hole onto a paver or a table nest. Cory Ward I used pressure treated 4x4’s for the legs, but that is because the only 4x4’s my Lowe’s sells are pressure treated. The rest was non treated wood. I applied a finish to the table, and I also keep it covered while not in use.
So the base of the big green egg sits on the shelf of the table? How much above of the top does the opening of the big green egg sit? What are the clearances between the egg and the table top -- how much of a gap? Is heat an issue?
Make sure to check out the link in the description. You should never place a Big Green Egg directly on a wood surface. They sell a "table nest", and that's what I have mine on. The clearance is going to vary based on your hinge system and whatever you set your Big Green Egg on. I've had no issues with heat. I'm still using the same table I made for this video.
You are correct in that only the legs are treated lumber. My table has held up fine; however, I keep the entire table under a cover. If I was leaving it out, I would have used all treated lumber or I would have needed to refinish it by now.

Table is still holding up great! Reminder that I keep the entire thing under a cover, so it's only exposed to the elements while in use. I'm also still running with that initial coat of poly you saw me apply in the video. No need to do anything to it so far. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Noticed on the shelf that it looks like the pocket holes between the two sides are right on top of each other. Is that not an issue? Would it be better to just screw the side into the 4x4?
It hasn't been an issue for me, but you certainly could go in to 4x4. The way the pocket holes seat in to the 2x4's, the screws are not hitting each other with the method I used.
Do you have weather/rain covers for this? i know they can probably be a pain to find something that fits a custom design. any idea of where we can find ones that fit this design?

Getting ready to use your plan for my table. Did you leave your table legs at 31.25” plus the casters? I’m 6’ tall and I am trying to determine the best table top height as well as the best cook surface height, considering the 2.2” height of the nest and that it appears that the cook surface is 6” above the table top. Love the design, just concerned about height
Hi Randall - I did not shorten my table legs, but sometimes I wish that I did. However, I'm only 5'7" on a good day ;) You may be fine. I would try to find a height you are comfortable grilling at and try to match it. My table is 36" off the ground. That's 32" for the table plus the 4" casters. From there, you are correct that the felt line of the BGE is an additional 6" higher, so that is 42" off the ground. That is pretty high, but unless you are raising your grate, the cooking grate itself is lower. Hopefully I didn't confuse you even more. I think a lot of it is just personal preference.
Hey ! Awesome video. Thank you for the plans ,material list ,etc... super helpful !! So the only question I have is... if the top boards are all 1x4s and you have 5 going across horizontal. Then wouldn’t that only be 20” wide? It says it’s 25” wide on the plan ..? I could be misunderstanding ..?
Hi there. In the plans, there are 8 1x4's that make up the top. These are listed as item F in Step 1 of the detailed plans. You may be confusing those with item D, of which there are 5. One other thing to note is the 1x4's are actually 3.5 inches wide, not 4. So with 8 that makes my table 28 inches deep. That's larger than the standard plans from Big Green Egg. Let me know if you still have questions!
I’m not exactly sure how hot it gets but I don’t touch the ceramic while in use. Also with this design the egg doesn’t touch the wood anywhere. You especially need to make sure you don’t just place it directly on the wood shelf. You need a paver or table nest underneath the egg.
Make sure to read through the the plans linked in the description. I talk about the height in there. But to directly answer your question I have not changed the height. Also, for perspective, I’m not tall by any means (5’7”).

The long clamps you see when I'm putting the top on are just some Irwin clamps I got at Lowes. I also used the Kreg right angle clamp when assembling the frame.

Absolutely. That's what I would have done if I was leaving this table out in the open. With it under a cover though, it's held up just fine.

The first drawing came from Big Green Egg. I used that as inspiration for my plans. The step by step instructions I made are correct.

How long did you let your legs dry before building with them? I just worry about them shrinking.
Not very long (a few days), but I would say do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Nice vid. What is the weight of finished product - sans BGE?
I’ve got to be honest in saying I have no idea. It’s pretty heavy though. The casters came in handy getting it into place.

No I have not. I'm not sure about having a Weber kettle that close to wood either. You may want to do some research on that.

What grit did you sand boards
I think I uses 100 grit on the 4x4's to start because they were pretty rough. Then 220 for the final sanding.
