12 years later and still relevant and very helpful. Have to do the Headgasket on my 93 Mazda 323 Familia and has been very difficult finding videos in English that clearly show how to remove the timing belt. Thank you!!! Wish me luck....
I have a 1989 Mazda 323 Hatchback, the engine and everything is the same as your '88. When I do a timing belt service on it I always replace the timingbelt & tenioner, waterpump, coolant, fan & V belts and both radiator hoses. That way I don't have to worry about anything except oil changes and tune-ups unttil the next belt job pretty much. My little car currently has 480,000 miles and still going strong. I still get 30 mpg and can still spin the front tires. Thanks for your video.
My South African-built Ford Bantam 1996 model pickup has the identical B6 engine. I am busy replacing a blown head gasket and need to take all the stuff off that you did, except for the water pump to get the belt off the sprockets so I can lift the head. This was very informative and thanks for the video!
Okay, following your video I was able to complete my water pump replacement in about 4 hours. Regarding the physical removal of the old pump, I too had difficulty getting it through the confined space out the top. So I removed the front engine mount and using a jack under the sump lifted the engine up high enough to free enough space to get the old pump out and through the crack. Thanks again for great video! Jon
Awesome. I recently bought a 1990 Mazda 323 Astina and am planning on doing this. The engine bay looks mostly the same so this video and the service manual should come in handy. Thanks for doing this video.
This is a really good video. Great pace and very informative. I have just blown the water pump in my ford laser (mazda 323) and was hoping for youtube video to help - exactly what I wanted. Thanks Ed
Just discovered this video as I`m due to replace my Mazda`s timing belt. Great video, thank you Sir. Ohh and I could not agree with you more of the safety aspects, very wise ...
Nice Fix don't know if I would have done that much work on an old car but I have a forklift with that motor so very informative and helpful for me to tackle a similar job. Thanx Again !
Just did the water pump in my 1988 323 today. Removed power steering unit and motor mount which is much different that yours. Enjoyed watching you do the same thing I just did. ;-)
thanks mate, i did mine yesterday, not the same car as yours ford festiva 91, similar engine though B3,MAZDA 121, had a hell of a time removing pulleys from the crankshaft, no room, i had to remove top engine mount and then jack up the motor far enough to wriggle the two pulleys off. one pulley wasn't being used so tossed it and now in future i wont have any trouble doing same job....
Thank you ! You have done a really good jobs on this video , i am learning from you now , do on my dad 's car water pump and timing belt change over this weekend
If you check out the comments on this video you will read that a few folks like Jon and South Florida Railfan had to remove the front motor mount as their engine was a little different. Just another step to keep in mind if you are not able to physically pull out the old water pump.
fantastic video ed..am a mazda fan and if truth be told an anorack as well ha ha..im now working on a mazda 2 1.4 cd and replacing the head gasket.im very shortly putting a video of my pain and suffering.but again a great vid ed..
Thank you for posting the 323 water pump video. Seems though some steps were missing like removing oil dipstick to get the old water pump up and past the power steering hoses, or removing AC compressor for same reason. Otherwise very helpful video
Just did this on a 91 protege...looks the same except some jakess decided to mount an AC compressor in front of the 2 bolts holding lower radiator hose housing. Ridiculous...2 hr job with a bonus hour of trying to get that bottom bolt + 45min of removing/installing accessories. Thanks for the video
sorry to hear about you uncle , this was a very helpful video . i'm going to tackle my mazda 2 timing belt in a few weeks time but i can't seem to find any guide on it ... its a 2004 but i'm wondering if its the same procedure.
7:03 I threw this spring out of my car and relied on the screw only because I cannot return it due to the lack of space. Does this cause damage to the engine?
great video Ed, thanks. trying to do the same on my wife's 1993 323 Familia, however its a DOHC 1500cc motor and I've run into a hurdle as I cant seem to remove the timing belt off the crank pulley as its obstructed by a face plate which seems to be integrated into the pulley. Any ideas folks?
Stefan have just done mine, its the same car. You have got to remove the crankshaft bolt, to get to the belt.Jamb the pulley with a large srewdriver and it will come undone.
great video I was able to pull my water pump out through the Bottom by removing the alternator bracket can write out by the crankshaft video helps a lot thanks have you had any luck finding a good radiator that fits
I cut off the damaged part of the pipe as in the video in time 18 minutes and i put it back to how it was . and I didn't change the pipe. it no more leaking any water
Mac Chavez usually you replace timing belts at recommended service intervals. If it breaks there's a whole other set of problems you can run into (bent valves, cracked pistons). The water pump is usually replaced at the same time just to prevent taking everything apart again if it fails. This guy suspected a bad water pump...I think he mentioned it at the beginning.
