This video was totally awesome. I followed his instructions and was able to change out my water pump and timing belt. I am a total novice. It took me time but follow his tips and suggestions and you can't go wrong. I was so excited that it all worked!!! I thought for sure it wouldn't work. Thanks
This video is sooo damn reassuring, i recently started taking on my own personal work and I have this same thing to do next two days an i assessed all I had to do and what I possibly might have todo and and I must say I was basically spot on
Thanks for doing a vid on this. As a fellow Mazda tech (retired) your disassembly & narration was good, however, beginning at the crucial point where the two cams are marked and held in place for timing belt removal/install (there's a special holder available for this). You kinda heavily edited over the somewhat tedious process for a "do it yourself'er" to actually attach the new timing belt & tensioners, release the belt holders, then observe that all cam & crankshaft marks are still in alignment. Though i realize all that would have made for a longer video. Thanks
When all back together, there should be a slight buzz noise at idle. When this breaks in breakin time depending, this goes away or almost goes away after 2,3 yrs.depends on miles you put on engine. You did good.
This will not work for all 1998 model year Proteges. About halfway through the production year they changed the way the timing is driven for the exhaust camshaft (from chain driven off the intake camshaft to belt driven). Any 98 Protege with a vin # ending before around 11400 has a chain, and after both camshafts are belt driven. Also, all 98 Proteges have a distributor attached to the exhaust camshaft (which is also where the camshaft positioning sensor will be located). The intake camshaft will always be belt driven though, and the timing marks are pretty much the same. Also, the A/C compressor is driven by the power steering belt, so that belt is longer and slightly more difficult to get off. I know all this because I am currently rebuilding the top end and changing all the timing components on my daughter's 98 Protege. I had to use AllData information from the 98 and the 99 model to get everything, because the late model 98 engine is basically a 98-99 Frankenstein monster.
If i may ask; you have the factory marks on the pullys and the crank for the timing. Why bother transfering marks on the belts? Either way, you just saved me 500 bucks in labor haha. Thanks for the video!
If one puts the timing belt on wrong, how would one realign the belt position? Thank you? There are symbols on the two upper gears and the crank shaft has marks too. Thank you and please help!
Thank you very much for this excellent procedures! Very informative. Is it possible to bend the valves if the timing belt breaks? any feedback will be appreciated. Best Regards. Rudolph
I've had that happen to me, i.e. timing belt breaking and valves bending as a result. Trust me, you don't want that to happen, VERY expensive shit...... Never going to let that happen again ;)
some engines have a free-moving camshaft system, which means if the belt snaps the engine will only shut down & let the camshafts slow down by themselves, preventing the valves from bending.
Quick question when you loosen the bolt on the tensioner does the spring alone créate enough tensión, can i tensión it moré by pushing the tensioner to the right and then tightening the bolt??
+Ross Garcia the spring should give you the right tension, yes it is possible to give it a little push to make it tighter. Too tight belt can give you belt noise, whine
I notice the timing belt seemed to be not fully on the camshaft teeth before you did the service. is this normal? I have the same problem with mine and seems the belt is very loose.
HI I AM LOOKING INTO THE AMOUNT OF LABOR TO REPLACE A RADIATOR TIMING CHAIN AND WATER PUMP ON A 2000 MAZDA PROTEGE 1.6 LT ENGINE INCLUDING ALL NEW HOSES PLEASE LET ME KNOW MUCH APPRECIATED JAMES
hey i have the same car can i know how should i fix squeaky belt when turning steering wheel when the car is freshly started,it goes off after driving a while, but it will still squeak if you turn the steering all the way to one side
+bea_witched I would get a timing belt kit that have all new parts in it. If you got it tore down why not replace it all. It will come back to bight you. I got bite like that so from then on I replace it all. One shot deal
It's me again from 2 weeks ago, I feel like utter fucking shit and I feel like giving up, I had a water pump job on a same mazda like this same engine etc, I didn't have the socket atm to take out the crank pully, I ligned up all marks, make my own marks on both the belt and cams in a few places and I pulled the belt right there, and left it hanging if i can say. Nothing moved while I took out the water pup everything stayed the same as is, only 2 things that broke was tge pvc valve an the crank sensor due to it dry rotted and cracked off, time to put bakc the belt, i check my crank marl it didn't move one but, I check the cans didn't move at alllll, but I still put renches on them to see if they moved while putting bak the belt n they didn't, so I. Carefully anf pain stakelting took almost 30 mins to make sure the belt went back up correctly.... Oh I had a fellow mech. Wiht me also.. We double an triple checked the timing to make sure it was all in alignment and it was everything lined as it shud, i even hand rotated the engine 6 times and back to TDC on the 7th and check back my marks, everything was set, I put back the valve cover, belt covers, ac. Belt etc and coolant then proceeded to start, first start the engine idled for about 10 seconds then began bucking and immediately the worse came to mins which was timing, but I was also certain I had timed it correctly and I had a look over. As the 2 weeks went I felt less and less uneasy about it and taught it was some other problem because that car had alot of buildup under the valve cover, a defective airflow that was butchered for it to work and other proboems that can cause it to buck, but that aside today I got a call saying that he had to chsnge the head an block,, well my heart stop, i froze I didn't know what to do or say, I was certain to check back the timing, I had a look over, everything lined up mark for mark, point for point,, the customer told me yes the valve is bent and he has to get a new head.... So now I am feeling,, failure, no will to do anything again, and this isn't ny first engine timing, i timed my 4g about 20 times due to belt warein over time, lifter replacement, water pump change etc, I timed a Volkswagen jetta for God fkin sakes and up till now the VW works better then my car no proboems what so ever and thats more things to be precise with and align than 3 stupid marks on the mazda, i dont know how to feel truly right now.
I understood what you were saying most of the time but your going to lose a lot of noobs when you start throwing out socket sizes so fast and pointing out locations hap hazardly. Don't know your true intentions with this channel but you might want to be a little more thorough in your descriptions when points I got out certain location, as well as work on your editing and lighting. I also understand that your are probably working working against time per flag rate and had to hurry the demonstration, so no offense. Only thing I wish to point out is, not everyone has the knowledge you do and will expect more detail than what was given in the video. Don't mean to rip you and your video but thought you might like the instructive criticism.
You don't show location of bolts for bottom cover protecting crank an belts from weather, don't show bolts on other criteria. I seen lot better video on this in 2012 first time I did this. Give this video a 2 not a 5, sucks for new commer... The mechanic since 70s...

How did it go?

Thanks very helpful , am accustom to Nessan engins most normally uses timing chain ,this is my first time going to change my timing belt on a Mazda .
I love how-to videos - really helpful to DIY owners. Thanks for sharing
Thanks mate, it was perfect to see where you put your white markers :)
Awesome video now I know what to do with my friends car who has cam and crank shaft oil leaks

Thanks a lot i'm stuck in the philippines with a Ford lynx same engine
How far do i slide the bent tensioner over? How tight should the belt be?
I don't get why you have to really mark your belt and lock your rocker arms when there are already marks to set up the crank and cam
very good. gave me confidence to give this a try
If i may ask; you have the factory marks on the pullys and the crank for the timing. Why bother transfering marks on the belts?
Either way, you just saved me 500 bucks in labor haha. Thanks for the video!
Really nice job! Thank you for putting this together.
is this the same with mazda 323 familia 1997 Dohc 16valves? i sa different marks like "yu" and Z... please help.
great VIDEO Thanks
If one puts the timing belt on wrong, how would one realign the belt position? Thank you? There are symbols on the two upper gears and the crank shaft has marks too. Thank you and please help!

But, what type is your car?
Fu k three of u commented on his question n NONE of u answered it!
I am asking the same question
Excellent video
Muy buen video, aunque no entindí lo que hablabas, pero, con las imagenes comprendí. Gracias.

great instructions
Supper cool boss man

Very good upload, except for the lack of profanity usually accompanying such an undertaking.

belt might be to tide
Thanks man good video
I have the vvt 1999 engine can this work
Olá, você poderia me mostra a posição dos cabos de velas do Mazda modelo 626 2.0i 16v ano 93/94 ?
Is this the same procedure for the 1998 Mazda BP-DOHC 1.8L motor?
Yes that same
many thanks, keep it up bro..
nice info..thanks for sharing.
Can i remove the water pump without removing the timing belt?
Great video :-)
How much would a job like this cost?
What air impact wrench did you use to remove crankshaft bolt? How much ft/lbs of torque would I need to remove?
Daniel Pacheco hey, how do you removed the bolt?
If my timing belt broke do I have to replace my water pump? It's 2002 protégé.
bea_witched Do not have too, but if you are most of the way there, I think it is a best practice.
+bea_witched I would get a timing belt kit that have all new parts in it. If you got it tore down why not replace it all. It will come back to bight you. I got bite like that so from then on I replace it all. One shot deal
Dumb question. If my valve cover starts to leak after I've had the timing belt and water pump changed, is this on the mechanic?
Yes the valve cover gasket should have been replaced and the cover and inside should be cleaned out instantly after they reput it together
Hey I change my timing belt & it idle rough what to do
Mauricek Johnson Double check your timing belt marks for alignment, any vacuum hoses that may have gotten knocked off.
Mauricek Johnson what number on cam sprocket of cam be used other say 1 other positive on 2 NORMAN
Mazda rustler 1600 f8 Engine

Gracias muy bueno
muy muy explicita gracias
Wish you had better lighting and sturdy camera.
