I'm from Hendersonville about 20 miles south of Asheville. I've attended multiple "Christmas Jams" . And have never, ever, heard anyone, from any walk of life say anything even remotely negative about Mr. Warren Haynes. The fact that he has quietly put on these "Christmas Jams" with proceeds going to Asheville's Habitat for Humanity. Speaks volumes for his character. And like this night, big names volunteer to perform free of charge. I've had the opportunity to meet both Derek and Warren very early in their careers. How early? Warren Haynes was performing locally in a band called "Ricochet". And solo at a hole in the wall bar ( "The Handlebar"? which had been a business previously, hence the single, no stall, commode restroom,) in the corner of a strip mall on Merrimon Avenue. in Asheville. This tiny space played a very significant role in Warren's career. I recall was having a Sunday morning conversation with Warren on top of a hill at Zeno Ponders farm in Madison County. Where their band had put on an outdoor concert. I don't really recall too much else about that concert, as I'm now 67 years old. At least, that's My story now. I mean being a single young man in my early 20s, I didn't heavily sample the drinkable or smokables available for which Madison County was nationally known for at that time. Derek Trucks was touring with his band (and his Mother as he was still a minor) playing small venues (bars) throughout the southeast. When they happened to play at "Al's Pumphouse" on Poinsett Highway in Greenville SC., where I was living at the time. To shorten this story--. The band takes a break about 9:30, (so there's still fading light in the summer). Around 9:50 it's dark. , Derek's Mom is getting a little frantic. Seems he's become pals with a customers kid the same age. Who's Mom thought it would be a good idea to for him to see someone his age performing. Well they both show up at about 10:00 . Red clay mud covering their legs, shoes, and socks. They had just been doing something typical for boys their age. Chasing tadpoles in a mudhole !
