  • Many countries around the globe have encountered epidemics in the past. In certain cases, they acquired pandemic proportion as there were worldwide spread of the diseases. The pandemics were also characterised by development of microbial resistance and as a result, the death toll was usually very high. However, whether it is an epidemic or pandemic, it always had grave implication on the weak as they were the ones who are often put in a precarious survival position. There have been instances when the entire native population of particular regions were decimated. One of the most common reasons behind the transmission and spread of epidemics around the globe has been the long-distance travels of humans. In this talk my focus would be on historicising significant turning points in the epidemics past. I also aim to highlight how disease exchanges actually take place; why the weak are worst hit during the epidemics; and how the epidemic discourse has led to completely new interpretations of human engagements with nature.
