Hey man this was a good video but I do have a question that I like clarification on: since AI tasks have traditionally been done on a GPU what is the benefit of having a npu as opposed to an Intel PC with a powerful gpu?
Hey! You’re right GPUs can handle AI related tasks. GPUs are very versatile & handle a wide range of tasks especially those that need parallel processing (many simultaneous calculations) These are generally demanding tasks.
NPUs are more specialized and are good for reasoning or inferencing which essentially means making predictions or drawing conclusions from the data that it’s given. But also they’re efficient for power constrained devices like laptops & phones
Thanks for your input! I’ll pin this comment so others can see as well 😁
@@YonnyDigital thanks for the reply and explanation man! If it fits into the theme of your next video I’d love to hear about the reasons to select a computer with an NPU versus that of a GPU. But only if you think that the rest, your audience might appreciate it as well (I don’t want to tank your videos).
That is true the GPU is usable for more like just AI, but that GPU can also consume as high as 300W-450W recently, meanwhile the NPU just doing the same with a few W (just for reference, the iPhone 15 also have 35 TOPS, and it's remain usable for hours instead of just 5 mins what the GPU should consume for the same work without the dedicated NPU)
technically NPU does the same job of GPU but with less power. thats it.
@@TamasKiss-yk4st thanks for that detailed response ❤ this helps a lot. And it explains the tremendous battery life.
Thanks for a very clear explanation of a NPU been trying to puzzle that out.
Glad it was helpful!
Subscribed because of the quality of the content. Great explanation, great editing. Keep it up, keep them coming
Thank you 🙏🏽 more videos coming your way 🫡
Thanks for the info Yonny. You’re awesome
Thanks Bread!
Great explanation, thanks!
Thank you! 🙏🏽
Very informative video
Yurrr new yonny video
it’s jiaqiiiiii
This is a great vid, hopefully more views and subscribers coming your way!
Thanks !!🙏🏽
when i was near to end of the video i thought this channel may have more than a million subscribers but when i looked i was shocked what a great quality content. u will grow very fast.
Thanks for the motivation! It means a lot 🙏🏽
Thank you for the excellent explanation. This is my first time on your channel, I joined and liked. Your explanations are very understandable. I like seeing Microsoft Windows take advantage of the ARM operating system in what appears to be well executed. This would allow Windows as an operating system to have a broader form factor application, from hand held devices to desktop.
That said, I am waiting for Intel and AMD to announce their offerings in 3Q24. I hope they meet the battery life targets and AI requirements. Today for me I prefer x86 for compatibility of hardware and software on my laptop and desktop devices. Time will tell if ARM can meet that requirement well enough for my use case.
What are your thoughts on Intel and AMD with Copilot +PC?
Thank you for the support & welcome to the channel!
I think competition is good. It’s always good for companies & consumers. I feel like in this super competitive market AMD & Intel will find a way to compete.
There’s still a market for x86 as it still has many advantages over ARM. Especially for desktops. I think there’s a world where they can co exist & have specific use cases
Hi Yonny, your video is great. It clears so many terms I did know before (such as NPU, GPU, etc). Many thanks for your helpful video. Please do some more and compare it with Apple devices. Many thanks again
Gotcha! I’m glad I could help. I’ve got more videos planned to dive deeper into these topics, stay tuned 🙌🏼
Remember, even this new and improved version of Windows on ARM, for all its bells and whistles, will still be contaminated with 1990’s era legacy interfaces and apps. Make no mistake - Windows will remain a filthy OS for many years to come.
🤣🤣 filthy OS. But yea I’m definitely not expecting Windows on ARM to be perfect by any means. I’m interested in seeing how smooth they can make this transition though
I subscribed today to this channel
Welcome! 😄
From my understanding any app you can use in intel and amd you can install in the snapdragon there is no issues with app capability anymore that was only wuth the Suface pro X
Really useful video! Have been considering a new laptop, and wanted to know whether to get an ARM on or an intel one.
Subbed!
Thank you! I’m glad I could help. I’ll be reviewing the Surface Pro so stay tuned!
Great breakdown, I’m not a huge tech expert but always feel like one by the end of your videos! 😂
Thanks😁 just passing along the research I’ve done 🙌🏼
The question is, would we be able to use all the recall and copilot+pcs feature using X86 chips? To be honest, I'm only interested in the real time copilot feature they showcased when playing Minecraft cause I find it very useful in certain situations...
It would be hilarious if they add Recall to other devices through the cloud especially after saying it’s gonna run local & not on the cloud for privacy reasons. This probably won’t happen if it’s enabled by the NPU but it’d be super ironic 🤣
But also they could add some AI features that don’t rely on the NPU if they choose to. But we’ll just have to wait and see
I don’t know if they’ll want to keep some features exclusive to Copilot devices to differentiate them & help them sell better but they can always gate-keep some stuff. Time will tell
Hi dont’ Forget to review the Auto Super Resolution in game
Worst thing is no version of the surface pro will feature the fastest variant of the X Elite, the x1e-84-100.
Actually wasn’t aware of this, thanks for the comment! Gonna look into this
Hey, so I reached out to Microsoft & they confirmed that the Surface Pro with the Snapdragon X Elite & OLED screen will have the X1E-84-100
Well, either the agent I spoke to had no idea what he was talking about or he lied lol. I received both my 15" Surface Laptop & the the OLED Surface Pro & they both have the X1E-80-100...
Updating you since I was given false information...
Microsoft focusing and switching to ARM sound great for running windows on MacBooks 😄. Hope we get to see Microsoft flight simulator released for ARM natively, so I can finally ditch my extra windows PC I have just for that.
It’s funny you say that because I’ve been wanting to make the switch to MacBook for a while just because I find it to be much better for productivity & creative workflows like photoshop & video editing. I’ve never used Windows on MacBook but I can’t give up gaming & invested so much money into a custom Windows rig 🤣
I'm on the mac end but hoping this can bring hackintosh to these new PCs so I can use my favourite os without paying apple tax.
@@famousmwofficial8046 that would be nice yeah. But we would need some desktop ARM cpu’s first. (I know they exist but those are for workstations)
Hi, thanks for a great video. Do you think that the surface laptop studio 2 will get access the copilot + features soon? It has an NPU (not powerful at all compared to the snapdragon ones) and a 4050, so it should be able to run these features even if it has a greater power consumption. I appreciate any advice you could give about this, thanks!
I don’t think so since one of the requirements for a Copilot PC is that the NPU has to have a minimum of 40 TOPS
Also, thank you!
🔥🔥🔥
Well, just installed Ubuntu 24.04 after seeing the new "evolutionary" feature Recall. My Window partition did not survived, I guess it is fine :D
I learned what is npu and the difference between GPU
Mission complete 😁
Do those elite PCs run windows native apps?
Some apps will be native & others will run through an emulator called Microsoft Prism. Major apps like Chrome & Photoshop already announced they’ll be native to windows on ARM
MS is seeing all your info now, Recall wont make a difference lol.
Yea very true. The more I think about it, it’s not much is different in terms of what they know about you but one of the things I keep thinking about is how much easier it can be for hackers to get your data if there’s a breach. It’s like it’s all conveniently packaged into your Recall files
@@YonnyDigital Now thats a good point.
Can you try rhinoceros 8 to see how it works for designers?
Hey, I’ll try my best. I don’t have any experience with 3D modeling though 😅
I will refuse to use copilot. All I care about is speed on these new chips.
Fair! Microsoft is comparing the Surface’s performance to the M3 MacBook Air thanks to the Snapdragon chips
If this truly holds up, that’s a good value for the price on its own in my opinion. But, we won’t know until people actually start using them
Reppin STL!
FIRE fitted
Gaming: no, AI development/productivity: yes (if top performance is not required, but then you need a desktop with RTX 4090...). NPU in X Elite is really capable. NPUs have been developed already in 90s, on RISC and FPGA architecture. If Python libraries start to support x Elite NPU, the PCs will be beasts on academic/AI development. I will get mine in late June/early July. It came about 40% cheaper in 32 GB RAM + 1TB SSD configuration vs. comparable Apple M3 offering.
What!? Are you thinking they are capable of gaming as default?
Dig a bit deaper.. i mean the 45 TOPS for Snapdragon X Elite is ONLY in INT4 (32 bit..) measure, but Apple measured their NPU in fp32 first (like the 18 TOPS on M3 also in that), and after Snapdragon claims their NPU they also decided to use the bigger number, but they still anounced their number in INT8 (64 bit), there is an average 59% difference between INT4 and INT8.. so the Apple NPU in INT4 is over 60 TOPS (so in the same metric where Snapdragon just reach the 45..), but the even worst for them the iPhone 15 also had 35 TOPS (i didn't find any source is that also INT8 or not, but still just a phone chip which is close to the desktop chip or even beat it..)
@@mahfah7911 Opposite. For AI/productivity yes, but for gaming no.
But intel core ultra series processors also has NPU.
Yup, Microsoft isn’t ditching Intel CPUs entirely though
They’ll still have devices that use the x86 architecture; but the surface devices are now using ARM 🙌🏼
Get M4 with parallels
i want gaming test of snapdragon x elit
I gotcha
These will be expensive 😔
The starting price for the Surface devices isn’t that bad at $999 (still a lot of money but relative to other devices on the market)
But as soon as you start upgrading components it does get very pricey unfortunately
Just save it to that ARM laptop and not a phone
The only Microsoft I know is Word
you in the booth rn?
😅
Noob
Nice
I know bloatware and linux
I'd rather get the m4 windows sucks and windows for arm is even much worse. Ms is not apple who can just tell everyone to jump on the arm bandwagon
no real world reviews... this means only one thing, not so good?
The devices aren’t out yet. They release on June 18 but I’m sure they’ve sent out review units to big RUclipsrs & journalists so I expect videos to be out a little before June 18
@@YonnyDigital thanks
I will tell you a secret. Your RTX laptop already have NPU inside your GPU... and its WAY WAY MORE POWERFULL than anything this XELITE nonsense can offer.
That's technically wrong tho
@@ruveerapunchihewaAn RTX laptop will trounce a Snapdragon laptop even with AI apps. Snapdragon laptops are light with long battery life. That’s it!
@@tringuyen7519 rtx 40 series maxed at around 25-30 TFLOPS , just check it if you are not sure ( Qualcomm can do up to 45 )
keep up the quality bro. lol nobody trusts microsoft
Thanks 🙏🏽
Copilot is so dookie tho
guess i gotta find out for myself 🤣
Boo. Hiss.
