    Thank you for your videos. My best friend and I are considering permanent jewelry. Since yesterday I’ve watched almost all videos but can’t believe how expensive the welders are. So I was thinking if you don’t mind, since we live in Pasadena, LA, would you consider an in person tutorial, we can drive to SD. I used to live in Oceanside years ago and worked there at La Jolla. I would appreciate a reply. Thanks and Godbless .

    • @Friction-Jewelry
      @Friction-Jewelry  6 месяцев назад

      Hi! It’s more about the gauge (thickness) of the metal vs the material but both are important. Most welds in perm jewelry are going to be at 1/3 for all metals. If you are working with 22 gauge plus, 1/6 or 2/3 might be better. Sterling and gold usually take less power than gold filled or stainless.

  • @Bigdaddyrose64

    There's something called an "air pressure guage" on the one I bought. There's a place for a smaller tube marked out and what appears to be a 1/4" tube marked in. There's a plastic knob on it, that doesn't seem to turn. I'm guessing I need to buy a separate regulator and somehow attach this to the reglator, but not sure how or how to use the knob

    • @Friction-Jewelry
      @Friction-Jewelry  4 месяца назад +1

      Ya I wouldn’t even bother with that. Just buy the regulator for pulse arc welders. I got mine at Pepe tools I think like $120. 1/4 tube quick connect on the regulator.. I’ve got another video about gas 😊

    • @Friction-Jewelry
      @Friction-Jewelry  Год назад +4

      Personally I’ve only done a couple ring repairs. So it’s def possible. The thing with Gold filled, when you weld the base metal gets “remixed” with the plating so the weld area becomes exposed. So that spot will not look like the rest of the ring and may show tarnish differently. But that doesn’t mean don’t do it :)

    Great video Thank you I Am just venturing into the world of permanent jewellery Does the welder have a safety feature that unless you complete a circuit it won’t fire I just want to be absolutely safe I see it’s a feature with the Zapp and Orion welders and I am swaying towards those but the price is huge and the Amazon one price is great for a start up

    • @Friction-Jewelry
      @Friction-Jewelry  Месяц назад +2

      All of the welders have a delay period between first connection of a completed circuit and firing. Ya the Amazon machine esp used is so cheap it’s great for proof of concept. When this video was made the zapp (or plus) did not exist. Also Orions could not be had used or refinished for $1500. Like I said in my video if you have a good venue to sell at, it’s worth upgrading right away. If not, Amazon is probably your call.

  • @jeff_desir
    @jeff_desir Год назад +1

    Great info! Thanks! How does it compare to the orion? I was debating between a orion or the dado 2, but now i want to try this cheaper machine instead. I've been doing some tig welding with silver and gold, so I'm really tempted to buy this machine for thinner material... is it worth buying for welding/tacking thin material, filling casting defects, and re-tipping prongs?

    • @Friction-Jewelry
      @Friction-Jewelry  Год назад +1

      This is tough question for me, as I do not do fine jewelry, settings etc. if my goal was fine material like under 24g, consistently, I would buy the Orion mpulse or maybe the Zapp. For 2 reasons: 1, the microscope attachment, 2, lower power and consistency. I’ve never used the Dado 2, it looks great but price.. if you are using the welder professionally for an existing business, again I would buy the Orion. But if it’s more hobbyist then sure you could easily buy the Amazon machine and return it if it doesn’t perform for you.

    • @jeff_desir
      @jeff_desir Год назад

      @@Friction-Jewelry thanks for your input... 24ga would probably be the thinnest I'd weld. For a fraction of the cost of the orion, I think I'll try it. I wish I could weld under my microscope, but I don't think ill see good with dark goggles on, so I'll try with an optivisor and shade 10 goggles. The orion microscope definitely seems like the best way to get a more productive workflow...

    • @Friction-Jewelry
      @Friction-Jewelry  Год назад +1

      Shade 10 are dark , you'll need a lot of task light. I Like the 10x magnifying lamp plus shade 6 or 8 glasses. Optivisor is ok but I feel like with welding glasses its cumbersome. This is low power welding so you'll be safe with lower shade. AWS says shade 8 but I found them to be dark...again its one of the reasons I use the Orion setup. no glasses and smooth work flow. But ya man, for the cost it's worth a shot. return it if it sucks, the beauty of amazon! @@jeff_desir

And two, I just tried to close my first jump ring- I unplugged the machine but wasn’t sure it was safe to you the tip by hand, so I decided to touch it to the alligator clip, and it blew a large hole. Ok so, there are a few things that could be happening. Beginners tend to pull away while welding. Keep light but steady pressure on the joint until after it’s fired. 2nd, too little power will cause the jumps to not weld. Try raising to 2/3 or 1/6. 3rd. Clean your electrode.
