What’s crazy is that I welded aluminum with a “stainless mentality” until I had to weld a 1/4 throttle body to an intake manifold with only 120amps. It made me sit at the start for about 30 seconds with full pedal but that was the BEST aluminum welding I’ve ever done. Thanks for the confirmation. You’re doing a good work here.

Good evening, my name is Scott and I sure appreciate your taking the time to provide all your experience and expertise to show us out here tips for being a better welder. I've had a Lincoln Square Wave 175 now for a minimum of 20 years and while it's old school technology, it does do the job fairly well, as long as I take care of my end of the deal. But, watching your videos sure has helped me with some mistakes I've been doing for many years. I'm gonna take your free Aluminum welding class very soon to further augment my aluminum welding capabilities. Thank you so much for your assistance. Very much appreciated.

Good video, I welded Ali mig tig all over the world for 40 years. Any new people here take this information as Gospel. The rounded shiny cleen tungsten is key as well as matching gas flow with shroud size , and correct frequency. Also clean everything perfectly even the filler wire . You must use a tonn if scrap Ali to play around and learn the machine until you become one with it .

I'm wanting to buy a machine that will give me a HF tig function with a MiG function to weld aluminum and stainless specifically. I have a Lincoln 300 3d 98 model for big stuff . What box welder would you recommend for this application? My end goal is to be able to weld body panels on my trucks and build custom turbo pipes and reservoirs

What I can't figure out is how you get the definition between each "dime" its almost like each time you dip the rod the edge cools very quickly. Do you change your balance setting so the puddle cools faster? Or is it simply a very exact heat for the weld. My stacks always seem to melt alot smoother then yours.

After sharpening your tungsten change your balance to 90% positive on the torch or pretty much as high as machine allows and arc up on a scrap piece of aluminium
when arcing start low and slow as it balls the tungsten pretty quick

I don't know what type of machine that you're using.. but place it in "reverse polarity" (DC+) and press down on your tig foot pedal and you'll see the ball start to form.
Do this on a clean piece of copper.
Then change back to AC and weld the aluminum.

I'm not that good at controlling it yet but the method I use is to turn the positive side of the ac up to around 50% and turn up the amps 20 or 30 more than I need. I then hold the torch as level as possible while starting the arc. Ramp up on the pedal until you see the tungsten start to ball then let off when you get the shape you want.

What sucks about aluminum is that when you start a weld, the aluminum around the weld is pulling the heat away. Its called thermal conductivity I think. I had to do tig on tank trailers and anything but an edge weld was a pain in the ass Hanging around in one spot too long would crystallize the aluminum. Rework😁😁😁
