Am I remembering correctly that, in one of his duels that he just wounded his opponent and then walked up to him to "finish" him, his opponent begged for mercy and apologized, and at that point, Arnold turned and walked away?
No, although Benedict Arnold certainly is an example of an American turncoat. The term originates in the middle ages when barons would change or turn their coats (of arms) when they switched fealty or loyalty to a different nobleman.
