    Am I remembering correctly that, in one of his duels that he just wounded his opponent and then walked up to him to "finish" him, his opponent begged for mercy and apologized, and at that point, Arnold turned and walked away?

    Wasn't he the one that gave the word turncoat it's meaning

      No, although Benedict Arnold certainly is an example of an American turncoat. The term originates in the middle ages when barons would change or turn their coats (of arms) when they switched fealty or loyalty to a different nobleman. Since then, the term "turncoat" has come stand for anyone who changes sides. Thank you for your question. -Tom
