Preserving a Site that Set America on Its Path to Liberty: Historic St. John’s Church
This Preserving America profile features the Historic St. John’s Church Foundation, whose mission is to spark a global appreciation for the role that Patrick Henry’s “Liberty or Death” speech had in setting America on its path to liberty for all, and to ignite the public’s commitment for preserving the historic site where it happened.
For more than fifty years, the Foundation has produced live theatre "Liberty or Death!" historical reenactments featuring nine professional actors in 1700s costumes. Before each reenactment, an organ player plays patriotic music. A costumed, historical interpreter then serves as the narrator and provides an overview of the historical events that led to the Se...

Disaster for Americans at Penobscot Bay
Просмотров 118 тыс.14 часов назад
On August 13, 1779, the Americans in Penobscot Bay were trapped by a British fleet under Sir George Collier. Between midnight and 5 a.m., 750 Massachusetts militiamen and all their supplies were loaded back onto twenty-five transport ships and moved north towards the Penobscot River, hoping to make their escape. Inconceivably, the entire American fleet, all 44 ships, would be gone the next day,...
Time Runs Out for Americans at Penobscot Bay

The Penobscot Expedition stalled soon after the fighting started due to a squabble between the army commander, General Solomon Lovell, and his naval counterpart, Commodore Dudley Saltonstall. Showing a reluctance to engage the enemy that bordered on cowardice, Saltonstall was an obstacle that Lovell could not overcome. Without the support of Saltonstall’s guns, Lovell refused to risk a frontal ...

Spain Recaptures Florida

Between 1779 and 1782, Spain pressed the British in such disparate places as Gibraltar, the Caribbean, and Central America, and even threatened to invade Britain’s home islands, thus tying up dozens of British warships and numerous regiments of British regulars. Kentuckians Find an Ally in Spain

Despite cultural differences, Spain and Americans living west of the Appalachians became natural allies in the fight against England. The welfare of both was tied to the Mississippi River and the port of New Orleans, and both wanted the British out of the region. Over the course of the war, Spain provided loans that allowed the United States to purchase over 200 cannons, 30,000 muskets and bayo...
Spain, America’s Undeclared Ally in the American Revolution

A very biased portrayal. The presenter doesn't mention the casualties of the Loyalists and their Indian allies - which were ten times less, this is vital information for an understanding of the battle, but because it makes the rebel forces look inept and their foes somewhat heroic, he "forgot" to mention it. Also the main mission of the expedition was to relieve the siege and to give the British a bloody nose in the process - not only did they fail to reach the fort, or the British, but they were the ones that got roughed up. From the rebel perspective (I used the word "rebel" only because almost all the participants were American on both sides) the battle was a total disaster on all levels, their objective completely failed, their force obliterated with very modest damage against their enemies - yet the spin here is that because the Indians and Loyalists called it a day, after their job was very much done (i.e. stopping the column with significant enemy fatalities) the victory went to the USA, which is obviously ludicrous and smacks of propaganda rather than honest history.

Can't appreciate enough what Spain did for us in the American Revolution! Spain is often criticized for her help in that it was for self interests only. So what? Reasons matter little lol! Spain didn't need us! We needed Spain! Historian Larrie Ferreiro said that Spain and also France fought in the American Revolution for self interests only and that there's nothing negative about that! It's okay to do that! Sad that Spain is criticized while France gets a pass. People also forget the American Revolution was a world global war and not just within the 13 Colonies! Over 100,000 Spanish soldiers and sailors fought against the British helping the United States win it's independence! About 17,500 Spanish soldiers fought in the Southern theater in Florida and the Caribbean protecting French possessions allowing Degrasse to travel to both the Chesapeake and later Yorktown which Spain also had a huge role in the military planning! Spanish General Bernardo de Gálvez was kind and generous enough to release his own French troops under Spanish command and ALLOWED Degrasse to take them to go reinforce Rochambeau at Yorktown! Sadly, none of this is taught in American schools!

America had a list of undeclared allies, but Spain was the most effective. In 1779 the combined fleets of Spain and France attempted to land an army on England’s South Coast. Although the attempt failed this resulted in troops being held back for home defence. Spain then took the fight to the Mediterranean with an attempt to take back Gibraltar. Other Allies included Holland and the Mysore of India. Along with these fighting forces Britain had to contend with the ‘League of Armed Neutrality’. These nations included Russia, Turkey and the Scandinavian countries. This League used armed ships to protect its trade with America. But for me the most effective help came from Britain itself - Radical Patriot Whigs in Parliament. When news of the defeat at Yorktown reached London, this was the final straw against the Tory Government and the Whig Lord Rockingham became Prime Minister in 1782. Fighting against the colonies stopped the moment he came to power, but he continued the conflict against the other powers until the peace treaties of 1783. Men like Rockingham did not want to loose the colonies, but they believed that all Englishmen, even American ones, had the democratic right to chose their own governance.

All kinds of reasons for the British losing the war! But I agree Spain was the most effective ally! Cordova's victory in the Atlantic on August 9, 1780 capturing 55 British merchant ships that should have never been captured in the first place, over 3,000 prisoners many of which were about 2,000 British soldier reinforcements, 80,000 muskets, 300 cannons and equipment enough for about 40,000 British troops! This absolutely destroyed the British economy! Two months later the Great Hurricane of 1780 in the Caribbean destroying several British ships and heavy loss of life! 1781 Bernardo de Gálvez conquered Pensacola capturing over 1,000 British prisoners! These three Spanish elements helped weakened and demoralized the British army all around! By the time Yorktown arrived it was already over before it ended! An easy victory for the combined French and Continental army! And Jamaica was the real crown Jewel for Great Britain not the 13 Colonies. Jamaica was the sugar plantations money maker!

I find it comical that they portray Washington in a blue coat, when in reality he wore a red coat. In fact, his official position within the militia was "COLONEL of the BRITISH ARMY, 1ST LOYALIST DIVISION VIRGINIA REGIMENT UNIT in service to the BRITISH CROWN and "COMMANDER IN CHIEF of all FORCES in DEFENCE of HIS MAJESTY'S COLONY." A crown loyalist, just like his ancestors before him. In fact, Washington isn't even his real family name. It's DeHertburn. His ancestor William DeHertburn, a Norman Knight in service to the King, was gifted "Wessington Manor" for his faithful service. William then changed his last name from DeHertburn to Wessington, which is the Norman spelling of Washington. Something most historians either don't know or intentionally avoid.

It was a marriage of convinence in Spain helping the Americans. I think the Spanish came to regret it or put off the danger until after the war. When the cold war developed betwen Spain and Ameirca in the Mississppi River Valley and the Cumberland River Valley With the filibustering by Americans salivating for Texas , Florida and and the mining provinces of Northern Mexico and then their was the intrigues of General James Wilkinson spying for Spain. And Aaron Burr conspiracy. Messy, messy stuff. How we ever became and remained a country is anybody's guess.

My research says that the militia that marched on Upper Sandusky, were Pennsylvania militia, not Kentucky. Col. Crawford led the group from Mingo Bottoms on the (West) Virginia border of Ohio, adjacent to Pennsylvania. Kentucky militia would have left from the crossings in Kentucky rather than march up and around the Ohio valley to cross several hundred miles from their settlements. Otherwise, the story line is accurate. Note: my 5th Gt Grdfather and his brother were in the Washington County militia, which made up more than 70% of the troopers.

I would like to see a video, showing how the Northern States, sold their numerous slaves to the Southern slave owners, and made laws in almost every Northern state stating that freed blacks could not work in the State. The North intensely disliked blacks and wanted to get rid of them and didn't want them returning. In fact A. Lincoln was the head of the group in ILL that worked to send blacks to Africa or South America. He continued that work until the day he died. The North disliked the South for several reasons, but one of the most important reasons was that the South imported blacks and had a huge black population, "polluting the USA with non-whites". I doubt if the true history of Lincolns war and the period leading to the war will ever be told in a big way, but it is available in books. Think about this the next time someone says the North made war on the South to free the slaves.
