- A simple and devastatingly effective advert from Sammy Harari’s 1980s AIDS awareness campaign. This version shown in cinemas did not feature John Hurt's famous voiceover. See more public information films free on BFI Player (UK only).

With its simple and iconic imagery this was public information film at its most sensational: expensive special effects and high-concept production design brought public information filmmaking into the realm of state-of-the-art corporate advertising. The film was the result of a £5 million cinema and television campaign aimed at combating the growing spread of HIV and AIDS. With restrictions around the overt promotion of condom use on television and a growing chorus of moral campaigners promulgating their own agenda, the straightforward and doom-laded approach was probably the only viable option for campaign mastermind Sammy Harari. But the result was a hard-hitting and memorable campaign which undoubtedly fulfilled its brief of pervading public consciousness.

This one is more disturbing than the one with John Hurt (don't get me wrong, he's a legend, but this accentuate the sound effects and that makes it more chilling)

The ambience and subject manner make this one so eerie. Showing that this decades could have easily wiped us out had we not done anything about it

One of the adverts that stigmatised an entire generation of people with haemophilia. Apparently, the victims of the contaminated blood scandal died of ignorance, more like government negligence.
I appreciate this comment for drawing attention to the reality that HIV affected more than simply 'gay men', and that initial infection in Britain maybe even occurred due to tainted blood (HIV has a nearly 90% possibility of transmission through blood transfusion, versus 3% for receptive anal intercourse)
However, I think it's worth remembering that a PSA was sorely needed. In the United States, no public outreach efforts were made by the government; communities were left to fend for themselves to stop community spread.
I can't say anything about the stigma this ad might have contributed to, but it did raise awareness. Condom sales rose, 90% of the public recognized the ad, and AIDS became a public issue, versus simply a 'Gay' issue. Considering the alternative in the US, I think the better choice is obvious.

What's an iceberg got to do with an STI?
That at the time the AIDS crisis was just the "tip of an iceberg" for what could come if we didn't stop it now. For the advert to work you needed to understand the "tip of the iceberg" metaphor - that on the surface all you see is the "tip", but under the water is most of it that we can't see.

Because at the time this ad was made, the people who died of AIDS were only the tip of the iceberg. AIDS wasn’t just gonna fuck off after this ad came into existence, many more people were gonna die from it.
It was a metaphor on 2 levels - At the time when this advert was broadcast the HIV/AIDS epidemic was just getting underway, hence the tip of the iceberg imagery, and secondly it's not the part of the iceberg that you can see that is the danger, it's what you can't see, which was the case with anyone in the early stages of HIV/AIDS back then

I was a kid when these adverts came out and I was totally shit scared by them. At one point, I had a skin rash that lasted for weeks and I believed I had aids because of these adverts though I was too young to have even had sex but too scared to talk to my parents about it. Totally irresponsible Scaremongering shite, I still have nightmares about that time.

@@bawoman Both AIDS and COVID were diseases you DID NOT want to test positive for at their peak. I’m just saying that with the amount of people that died of COVID, I’m surprised no governments did ads like this.
@@CometMedalChavez Trust me even at its worse covid was considered a cakewalk in comparison to Aids in 1987 which was nearly 100% fatal. I would also add that Covid is 1000 times much easier to get and transmit (and much, much less fatal) so I would think making something like this would just cause sheer mass panic

Peter Deusberg's "work" has been definitively disproven, thanks to his selective choice of research and dismissal of evidence contrary to his conclusion. And oh yes... Because of his AIDS denialism, he impacted South Africa's health policy, which probably killed hundreds of thousands of people. Because, you know... That's what happens when you get sick with a highly lethal virus... You die.
If your so sure HIV doesn't cause AIDS... By all means, try it for yourself, than report your findings

HIV infects immune cells in the body (CD4+) and replicates inside them until the cell bursts open, releasing the viruses which go on to infect more of these cells.
By killing these cells your body becomes less able to deal with other infections (like the common cold etc.) and the patient is described as "immunodeficient"
AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome - At its simplest, a description of being unable to fight infections, which was caused by the previously described pathway.
Alex301The HIV test is not a diagnostic test , it can’t be used to detect viral particles, it is used however to detect certain proteins in an antibody/ antigen response that does indicate an activation of the immune system but is no way specific to a killer virus but showing the immune system to be active for over 100 different reasons, I understand now how the flaws have not been spotted by most people & why this mistake continues along its path , the ARV’s are of some use to get rid if parasitical or fungal infections but not as a long term treatment, it’s astonishing that more people haven’t looked into it , it’s not the first time huge errors have been made in medicine & science, history is littered with these mistakes, unfortunately that’s how we learn in science & medicine

mangere77 Hi there , when you look deeply into this hypothesis it massively flawed, please start with Neville Hodgkinson interviews on this subject , it’s utterly fascinating & not what you might think 💭 🤔There are Joan Shenton documentaries & many interviews with extremely highly intelligent professional people who have talked out , there is also a good documentary called house of numbers which is a great introduction to this issue , it’s so very interesting to look into , my best wishes 😊
