AIDS: Monolith (1987)

- Portentous imagery and John Hurt’s grave voiceover define this key film from a £5 million campaign to combat the growing AIDS epidemic. See more public information films free on BFI Player (UK only).
John Hurt narrates this highly charged and doom-laden advertisement from the 1987 AIDS awareness campaign. A cliff-face explodes in slow motion; an industrial drill bores into a huge block of rock; the word 'AIDS' is chiselled into the polished surface of a granite headstone and a "Don't Die of Ignorance" leaflet drops onto the surface along with an elegiac bouquet of white lilies. The solemnity of the accompanying voice-over quells any vestiges of ambiguity.
The film was the result of a £5 million cinema and television campaign aimed at combating the growing spread of HIV and AIDS. With restrictions around the overt promotion of condom use on television and a growing chorus of moral campaigners promulgating their own agenda, the straightforward and doom-laded approach was probably the only viable option for campaign mastermind Sammy Harari. But the result was a hard-hitting and memorable campaign which undoubtedly fulfilled its brief of pervading public consciousness.

I was about 8 when this came out. It scared the hell out of me. It's shown in 'It's a Sin' and brought it all flooding back. Amazing how these things stick with you but I suppose that is why it is considered such a successful campaign.

Jacspencer1857, if this shocked you, then you should look up the infamous Grim Reaper AIDS ad that appeared on Australian TV in the same year

They didn't fuck about with ads in the 80's!! This came out the year I was born and I still remember seeing it on TV during the 90's and it's not left me!
Hard-hitting for a purpose. They liked to scare people into thinking with public information films in the 70s and 80s.
I was born in 87 and me to I remember seeing an advert like this
It's a Sin brought me here. Unimaginable what it must've been like to see this back then
No problem if you weren't into gay sex
@@rickhardman7376 unlike coronavirus.
@@rickhardman7376 you are clearly very ignorant about AIDS. anyone can get it, not just men, and certainly not just homosexual men.
@@rickhardman7376 @DesertRose122 Don't worry, incels like you are highly unlikely to get it (though there are ways you still can).
Though to make you look even stupider than you already do, actually the type of sex least likely to result in someone getting HIV (you develop AIDS, you don't get it) is actually gay sex between women.
A little knowledge is dangerous and you are certainly in possession of a little knowledge.
Incidentally, I don't know what your use of the word "weren't" signifies. You do know it still exists right? 🤦

Blood, semen or vaginal fluids.
The one marketing/advert of my life to be carved in stone on my brain. I was a teen in the 80s, and this was terrifying. I know loads of people who died of it. Thankfully, medicine has moved on and it’s no longer a death sentence, but can be managed and can’t be passed on when viral loads are also managed with meds, people live full and long lives now.
Imagine if Covid was around in the 80s...
"don't go outside or you will die"
More like *”Stay away from others or you will die”*
Except Corona goes away after a fortnight. And there's hardly any guarantee you'd drop dead from it. And now the jab, the death rate has been cut in 50!
@@tristanthomas5006 After a fornight? For some maybe. My friend's ex, the mother of his kid, had it for months and still hasn't fully recovered.
Youll die of ignorance obviously
Both our past and soon-to-be-past (or passed - and I know you should never wish anyone dead but the context is quite amusing) British Prime Cuts of Meathead (sorry, Prime Ministers) Bojo the Clown and Mr Potatohead (now known by their fictitious comedy double-act stage name "Meat-and-Potatohead") would probably have given a reaction similar to those they gave (behind closed doors, until they were found out) about people with COVID; words along-the-lines of "oh, just let them ****ing die". (OK, "Meat and Potatohead, PMS"... I know it should be a small 's' but leave it like that because it's funnier, especially as they both get quite premenstrual at Gardener's Question TIme sorry wrong show Prime Minister's Question Time, I mean Chris T on a bike - there, narrowly avoiding blasphemy - they can barely keep the electorate alive so I'd never trust either of them with an hisbiscus.) Can't wait for the general election though as the blood really will be flowing at PMS-Qs! Go on Rishi, this 'period' in power has gone on for long enough (oh come on, even I made myself ROFL with that one).
As an eleven year old this was quite scary.
This is the one that scared the sh!t out of us in the late 1980s with the voice of the late great John Hurt . Such an unforgetable advert!
God, John Hurt's narration is chilling.
I came out as gay to my mum and dad a year after this was broadcast at the age of 15. Not the best timing. Fortunately times have changed
Sorry to hear that Stuey, hope things are better for you now!
I bet your parents panicked
Jesus... That must have been rough, man 🤝🏽
I’m gay, 17, about to send this to my boyfriend to scare him to death.
Sick.
Here’s a quick, nerdy little fact; if you listen closely to the strikes of the hammer, you can actually hear the Dies Irae motif, which is often used in film scores as a shorthand for death and judgement.
Robert Armstrong, then Cabinet Secretary and therefore the UK's most senior civil servant, noticed this when he saw the first rush of the video and argued that it should be changed. He was overruled by Willie Whitelaw, who said nobody else would notice but him. You've proved him wrong! Congratulations!

I worked for HIV/AIDS charity in 2000 and was told that for a long time the original film was lost. The negative had been requested to be rescanned in the 90s so it could be used for things like the internet etc and could not be found. It turned up several years later in a completely different department (possibly the ministry of transport).
Nice story thanks you for sharing it
In France every grand difusion document needs to have at least a copy in the national library
These films used to terrify me. They were on tv all the time in the mid 80's. I remember asking my mum when I was about 7, 'am I going to get AIDS?' 'Don't worry, you won't get it,' she said. As a gay man, AIDS, and these films have been in the back of my mind all my life. I never really let myself go, and enjoyed sex. Who ever I went with, I was always thinking, what are they trying to give me? I never got AIDS in the end, so I guess the films did their job.
I hope things are different for you now and you can enjoy yourself.
I was a massively promiscuous heterosexual during the 80s, without this advert I'm convinced I would have contracted HIV, thankfully I didn't.

How did you manage to avoid catching it? Was it simply a case of using a condom every time?

Famed filmmaker Nicholas Roeg directed this - it makes sense as to why it was so effective and striking, he was known for Don't Look Now and Walkabout, both of which have some terrifying imagery.
Don’t forget The Witches!
The Australian version with the Grim Reaper bowling is much scarier.
This led to some pretty awkward talks to my older brothers from my parents about using condoms; my brother and I found the awkwardness hilarious, people were much less candid about such things back then!
Nice this example has a stereo mix on it. Would be great to watch and hear this public information film in the cinema with surround sound. Would scare the willies out of me.
I'm 40 years old this year and frightened the life out of me when I was small even though I didn't know what it was about.
I have JUST realised, watching this again, that the hammer/chisel thing is a metaphor for sex. (I was oblivious when this came out. I was 12, ok? 🙂)
One of the MOST FRIGHTENING 🫣 PIF's I recall seeing back in the 80's when the AIDS Alert ⚠️ 📢 began wreak havoc amongst us all.
Still gives me Shivers to this day. Sad to know they don't make these PIFs anymore like before to inform everyone of the DANGERS taking place.

This ad was shown from Jan 1987 but the overall campaign started in March 1986 with several iterations of full page press adverts. The virus was still called HTLV-1 at the time as HIV was only coined later in 1986 and took a while to catch on. That’s why this refers to AIDS not HIV - it was the most commonly understood term by the public.
Wait, where's John Hurt? Oh, he's on the right channel. This is amazing if you only have a left ear.
I saw this in the film "Pride" which is an excellent movie and deals somewhat with the attitudes in the 80's and the AIDS crisis.
Saw this when I was 10 on tv. It still scares the shit out me.
I first saw this ad a few years ago. I had this weird fixation on old PSAs and PIFs that lasted about a year. Recently saw the trailer for "It's a Sin" that reminded me it existed.
I think I was about 12 when this ad came out. Didn't really understand what it was about at the time, I didn't find it scary, just confusing looking back. It's a Sin bought me here. I remember the leaflet tho , they used to have them at our local library.
Here after watching it's a sin, I actually remember this advert when I was a small kid I actually forgot all about it.
Watching it again is quite scary
Same. The gravestone and the voice over. [Chills]
0:33 Paraphrasing this to be put appropriately to our current situation, like "If you ignore Coronavirus, It could mean the death of you, so don't die of ignorance" would make a pretty much nice Covid-19 awareness ad. If they wouldn't wear face masks, guess we'll just scare the sh** out of them.
It's a bit different. If you got HIV in the 1980s and 90s, you were fucked. Covid has a very high survival rate unless you're very old or have serious health conditions.
Whatever anyone thinks this advert campaign saved lives

First seen on tv programme, interesting how didn’t write HIV as the announcement but instead writing AIDS, guess people always say AIDS instead of HIV
HIV always became AIDS then. There was no stopping it. You have HIV you have AIDS

The money they spent on this ad, could have easily gone towards research into saving people.
I saw this before watching It’s A Sin. Also this is high quality for the 1980’s.
It's high quality because it isn't a company advertisement but a government PSA advert that would show on TV in cinemas and possibly on radio
Did Siimon Reynolds make this? Lol why were psas so damn spooky from the 80s-90s
I understand it is meant to scare people into using condoms and being safe, but like I’ve read stories about people that had to watch these scary aids commercials as a kid and had nightmares because of them. Why couldnt they have shown an aids victim for the commercial to prove their point? Less “scary” and more humanizing, which also gets the message across, plus I’m sure that victim (if they agree to being in an ad) would definitely benefit from getting royalties to a national ad.
