- An industrial safety film made by Millbank films.
From BFI database: Describes some of the more common hazards met with in offices. Intended for all levels of office staff, including management.
This is a new transfer of an original 16mm print.
I remember my mother cleaned offices like this in the late 70s, and sometimes we would go along with her. It really did look like this: brown carpet, files stacked haphazardly everyywhere, smouldering ashtrays and that smell of stale cigarette smoke. It looks so old-fashioned now, but it really was like that. Also, I'm sure that's Steve Hodson as the idealistic young employee at the start
That smell of stale smoke and sweat (no showers) was in every building, hotel and airport in the 70s and 80s!
Years ago we had a chap who topped up lead-acid batteries where I worked on the railway. He always had a ciggie on. One afternoon his luck ran out, as he tried to undo a filler cap, there was a build-up of gas in the battery box and BOOM. The only thing I could think to do was spray him completely with the hose we used to fill up the train buffets and loo tanks. Ambulance crew told me I'd saved his life by so doing. The stupid thing was tha all he had to do was release a catch and the batteries could be easily slid out. He'd been bollocked by everyone including me for the ciggies while topping up too. You just can't tell some people !
Just imagine if that had been an unvented CET (Sileage) tank after five days out of depot! :-o :-p
That said, this (And widespread electrification) are two of many reasons why trains use diesel and not petrol. Could you imagine what'd happen to a petrol driven unit if a 25kV catenary collapsed onto it? :-o
Cool story bro
IFS Turbo. If you know... (taps nose), you know.
These films are wonderful time capsules - never their intended use. Fashions, technology, working practices, design - it's all there!
In other news: only let a man with a beard fix equipment! You may cause 'pounds' of damage otherwise...
Several years ago, I had a coworker who placed a space heater on a cardboard box lid surrounded by loose paper. I complained to my boss, who didn't think it was a big deal because nothing was hot (yet). I then complained to maintenance, who went ballistic. They took the heater and chewed out the girl and my boss. The girl threw a fit about the whole thing because she didn't think it was a big deal. She told me, "I do that at home!" "And you haven't burned down your house yet? Amazing!" I was so glad when she quit.

sadly, and as boring as these kindda films are - and they still have staff and trainees watch this drivel ad nauseam - they still seem necessary. all the eager beavers watching saying to themselves i aint gonna do that... let's hope the kids dishing out the "good advice" are as cautious as the films suggest we should be... can't say i have ever grassed on a colleague, though i know of chaps who wanna make the grade will purposely leave health and safety issues laying around to then blame the innocent sap who really hasn't decided whether or not he wants to ascend that greasy pole of fame and or success within the company... they're so tiresome one really can't be bothered. gaining employ or trying to be as conscientious as they demand one should be... take that dog shit, for instance... you leave it lying around as it turns crusty in the sun. and then grass on young jed who doesnt even own a pet or keep animals of any sort... for continuity's sake you place a dog or cat in his home for good copy as the cameras role. obviously when he's out at the shops or trynna convince the dole office he's suitably job motivated. you just know tony's gonna enjoy the mass conflagration you set off in the office block as you get turned down for that promotion you put yerself forward for earlier in the month - said promotion gaff ends up in monty's moniker to save your face...
Just hows how much offices have changed in the last 40 years. No computers, no safety glass, everybody smoking. My mum cleaned offices back then, and I remember as a kid going along sometimes, they really did look like the on ein the film, piles of paper, typewriters, those mustard-yellow carpets you only ever saw in offices. And everywhere that stale cigarette smoke smell.
I love to watch Ephemeral Film's stuff because I love the past, but I'm not sure I'd want to go back to the 60s or 70s and give up the sort of office I work in today, that is clean and safe.
Also the fire extinguishers.
Got to love that 'music' - nothing will ever be creepier than 70s synths with the distorted sound quality.
You're not wrong....so atmospheric
I was born in the 90s and I've never seen films like this before, in my school we would read and learn all about it, it's clever how they did this back then
They used to produce films like this and show them in classrooms with a 16mm projector. Films about drugs, and other dangers. The ones tough to watch were the driving hazard films. They would show very gory scenes from auto accidents. It was harsh. But i must say, i've always tried to be a careful driver, ha ha.
Thinking back to the 70s there were many safety adds on TV.
What an absolutely first rate RUclips channel....Filled with gems. Thank you so much for all your hard working at finding and collecting this wonderful collection. Keep up the good work.
Remember seeing this at school
Ye Gods, that office is an absolute deathtrap! I'd be dead by dinnertime on my first day.
Only in the 70’s could you put a page 3 picture somewhere in an office safety pif! Even in the 80’s they wouldn’t do that!!!!
Gotta love the pillock who slammed the door open and put the glass window through..there goes his wages for a week!
When I attended tech school and got my cert in secretarial duties, it was back when they were phasing out the electric typewriters, but you still learned how how to use them.
Anyone else dread using the mini guillotine that was the office paper cutter? No matter how good you *thought* you had secured the device before and after using it, one small misstep or moment of inattention, and ppl were calling you Stumpy for the rest of your life.
A scary British PIF that I've not seen before!
Gonna have to bookmark this vid for many reasons. Showing people how and why to isolate machinery properly before working on it being just one of them! :-)
Amazing film .
Still relevant today!
Every place I've ever worked has breached every safety reg going! Although I never witnessed anything more serious than fall or slight cut.
It's Don, of Don and Ivy fame in Corrie!
Mr. Bean should have been featured in this film
Isn't that Geoff Hinsliff who played Don Brennan in Coronation Street?
+Karl Florczak I think so. And the young man with the poster is Steve Hodson.
+Karl Florczak Oh, yes, that's it! I thought it was James Hazeldine :D
I thought it was Hinsliff as well - ironically, he also appeared in Coronation Street in around 1977 as a different character, around the time that the Rovers was redecorated.
It is as well, nice to see him with 2 legs
@@n136h He must've lost one tripping over an open filing cabinet. That was probably on fire. And filled with broken glass.
Who did their office housekeeping.....Steptoe and Son?
Wow, that dodgy typewriter repair will cost POUNDS (more than one!) to repair! Perhaps as many as five or maybe six!
£1 could get you 3 pints back then!
Oof...a window in the face...I bet that was pane-ful :D
Brilliant
2:39 And it happened to the best looking girl too. What a sexpot! :-O
Not as painful as that joke...
Films like this were probably shown to staff working in companies rather than television. Possibly on a reel to reel projector
Stuff like this was shown everywhere - to companies, but also on tv and in schools and cinemas.
Thanks, TFTM
Workin' from home's lookin' mighty swell right about now.
Look how slim everyone is
They are actors! Fat people were largely excluded from tv then.
Is the voiceover done by same guy as dark and lonely water PIF ?
No it's not Donald Pleasence.
I have never worked in an office, good thing too, terrifying places 😳
thanks for posting!
Look at girl @9:58 ....I bet half the accidents in the office were caused by people tripping over her hair !
She’s gorgeous - bet she loved to go dancing at the weekend
Beautiful hair.
Fantastic. Let's put the onus on the employees instead of the employers. The good old 70's.
Boy, we Americans must be prudes. I've seen my fair share of workplace safety videos in my time, but none of them ever involved tits. Guess the guys should have stayed awake until the end of the film!
Well, what a prick. Fancy messing with exposed wires while the machine was live!
mistofoles shocking
What about the blatant danger @09:22? She could have someone's eye out with those.
Jesus, can't believe I missed that! Thanks 😋😁
I know this is about workplace safety, but damn, I wouldn't want to work with careless people like them.
When my dad was working he was next to a door and someone ran threw it and the glass shattered and my dad has scars in his hands and one on his face and his leg is covered in loads I was just glad he was ok but the other guy who ran threw it survived fortunately
The guy who rescued the girl from the fire was the head screw in "SCUM" !
@10:06 - Is she typing or playing Space Invaders ?
best part of this psa are the computers
Don Brennan out of Corrie!
The 70s seem to have been a very dangerous accident prone era
8:02 - computers, possibly the ultimate in office machinery
What a racket. Every job I've ever had they say "lift with the knees etc blah". Then the real work begins and it all goes out the window because actual work needs to be done. Fire extinguishers everywhere even though no one smokes indoors.
Film should be titled "Bad Day At The Office".
9:58 A dangerous collar could easily poke someone in the eye…. 😂😂
Was the bloke in the green shirt in a PROFESSIONALS ep. ' In The Public Interest ' 11.52
11.43, Mr Sands from Scum!!!
Apart from the obvious hazards there I wonder how many accidents occurred in 1970s offices as a result of platform shoes and flares 🤣
@12:39 "Wanna see my breakdance moves?"
All these films are very creepy.
ants161984 Fur enuff. ;)
Donald Pleasance's voice could make the financial news sound creepy.
@@TallSilentGuy the financial news IS creepy
Is that Julie Dawn Cole @3:51 ?
The girl @11:29 called the hotline..
Disappointed at the lack of bottom smacking
@11:28 - She called the hotline..
Pretty good, but they still missed one glaringly-obvious safety hazard: WEARING HEELS IN THE WORKPLACE.
Ooh, and also 9:30 - not tying up long dangling hair around machinery!
Not to mention 11:59 - _using a water extinguisher on a powered electrical appliance..._ 🤦♀️
In the 70s I think wearing heels was expected in the workplace. Not so much these days.
Re the typewriter, a lot of typewriters were manual and just made of plastic/metal with obviously the paper inside them as well
Have a Good Day, Dear (1977) UK Public Information Film 2313pm 15.5.23 he once starred in coronation street...he married Ivy Tysley... drove a cab had a fetish for a hairdresser. no geezer shouting: alwite tweakle! at the ladies. which was nice though somewhat anti nostalgic of the filmmakers.
"Morning Sugarlump".
Nog311 I said aloud, “kick your ass!” Lol
Classic 70s sexism at the end there!
Steve Hodson checked shirt
very sinster music ,the year i started school
+honey monster You look a lot older.
How old do you think I look lol
lol Don Brennan
Don from coronation street lol
I knew the face! I thought it might had been George Costigan but it's definitely Don.
This movie would be a masterpiece without the narration. Leave all the diegetic dialogue but add HORROR MOVIE music all through.
The most dangerous thing in that office today would be the calendar on the wall at 8:38
Edit -- I stand erected, I mean, corrected. Just seen the end....
Ironically people back then had more common sense. Maybe PIFs should be reintroduced for today's numerous idiots.
@7:53 "You dozy twat !"
At 11:12 there's a girl from Benny Hill's Angels - Sue Upton? Am I right?!
It's not her, dude.
IFS 😉
Don Brenan
truly not safe for work lmao
OMG! Why are there sooo many white people in this vid???
Because very few BIPOC were on British tv then. As with fat people too.
