"I know this video wasn't super exciting" Man, you have no idea how excited I got when I saw this in my sub box. I've been eyeing this cluster swap for a while now. Your videos are a godsent for someone like me
ditto. They make nice kits for newer generation 4r and trucks. I couldn't find anything specific for the older pickup style wheels except a universal one. black with black stitching might not look bad. www.amazon.com/Genuine-Leather-Steering-Needles-Thread/dp/B07L6Z6JTK/ref=asc_df_B07L6Z6JTK/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=343272646452&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=949253611187645193&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031318&hvtargid=pla-781372347262&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=74758335971&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=343272646452&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=949253611187645193&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031318&hvtargid=pla-781372347262
Hey Austin. For the steering wheel, you can use clear silicone to fill in all of wear. Just sand it down a bit with 400 or 600. Put on the silicone, then use some SaranWrap or wax paper to 'smooth' it out over the steering wheel. Let it fully cure and then use a vinyl / leather type spray paint. It will look good and feel just fine.
Totally off subject mater of this video, but I saw when you dropped your lower dash that your speakers are open air. If you can find 4Runner in the same body style. They have plastic pods that the speakers fit in and they bolt right in. I did it on my truck. Made them sound better.
My steering wheel looked like that on my 4runner, I bought the leather kit on Amazon and sewed it myself, and it looks like OEM brand new. Your steering wheel didnt come with leather from the factory, but it would still look really good
My question is how did you know where the soldering needed to happen for the resistor to happen? I've wanted to change the light color on my switches around the doors but wouldn't even know where to begin
Just us fine grit sand paper to the mirrors to dull them down. When I did my truck in old green anything that was glossy or chrome is gone using sand paper, paint, or a combination of both. If you got the cluster from a v6 vehicle you don’t need a resistor, the only time you need a resistor is if you go to a v8. All I had to do when I added a SR5 cluster to a 4cly was to pin a wire into the plug and install a oil pressure sending unit. Been working fine since I installed it back in 2014.
The steering wheel is different because of the buttons, If you get an SR5 wheel without the buttons it will go right on. They wiper switch is different when you have the buttons as well.
Superskin leather steering wheel cover. Its real leather and they are pretty cheap. I've put 2 on and they feel pretty awesome. It comes with pre-perforated holes, two needles, and the string. You can do a fancy cross stitch or just a slant stitch.
I've never refinished a steering wheel, but I detail cars. Go to Walmart and get chemical guys total interior cleaner and protectant. If that doesn't work, get some super clean or LAs totally awesome, but if thats worn down, I don't know 😕
If you disassemble the front cover on the right upper corner of the tach behind the face of the tach there is a potentiometer to adjust and calibrate the tach no resistor needed
Hey Austin, what does the resistor do on the cluster? I found a 4 cyl cluster for my 3.0 and unfortunately saw this video too late... fried my oil pressure gauge and need to add a wire to get the tach to work... or do I need to add that resistor, too? TIA 👍🏻
Yeah def try to find a leather wrap usually they have like red string you use to put it together maybe they have green to match the paint. I remember watching someone do it, it looked tough but hey content and you don't usually shy away from tough projects
brilliant video, every day a school day i picked up a few tips :) im getting closer to a purchase on a hilux just waiting on the right one ,, yipeee keep the content coming
For the steering wheel I would get some sanding sponges and get some leather dye to make it look better. I’m currently restoring a 3 spoke supra steering wheel for my 3rd gen 4Runner.
I’m planning on doing this swap on my 1994 with a 22re. I found a cluster at the yard like this one off of a 94 4Runner with a V6 do I need to do the resistor part? I’ve found a few videos but they all have 3.4. If anyone can please help me out I’d really appreciate it.
I would really like to switch miroros and get rid of the wing windows looks a lot cleaner and I bet its easer to see. love to see a parts list for this.
Gday Austin. I’m planning on doing a similar door card setup in my Hilux, you able to recommend some American wreckers that would be able to ship those Tacoma door parts to aus? Cheers!
I wish I had half your mechanical knowledge I watch all these different mechanical videos get it in my head I am going to do some work on my yota I get started and then I am like screw it I don’t know why anyone would want to do this crap lol
@@austinniemela I ain’t kidding man I attempted to change my master and slave cylinder I ended up cross threading the mastery cylinder I couldn’t get the pin back through my clutch pedal I said screw this crap I made a post on fbook and I said $100 dollar bill to whoever comes and fixes this I supplied tools parts and cold beer
You could always wrap it in leather. I did that to my3rd gen 4Runner. Here’s a link to a video I made on it. m.ruclips.net/video/yLn2iebiEdM/видео.html
vinyl spray paint will do it. unless that original dash cluster was bad i don’t understand why the hell you wanna put in the work just swapping it out. and again the original steering wheel was nicer and matched but you swapped it with another one. i mean after all that you didn’t gain a single hp.
Can’t see the steering wheel up close. If it has stitches, it is wrapped in leather and you can simply remove the old, match it, and put on new leather. I did it to my old dodge.

Awesome I am glad you enjoyed! Thanks
I like the side view mirrors. They are a nice contrast. I say: Leave Em!!
LED bulbs in the cluster is a HUGE upgrade! Cheap too!
Wrap the steering wheel in OD green paracord to match the body
Wrap/stich the steering wheel with grey leather.
Leave the mirrors black, should be a nice contrast.

For the steering wear people usually wrap them in the same coloured leather. Chris Fix also did a video on it

Not to worry, this is another sold video on the how to of getting the smaller jobs taken care of a build. Well done my man.
I did the exact steering wheel swap and it does work well thanks to this video!

You are like MacGyver but with a vehicle 😂👍🏻
SEM dye for interior parts!!! Done a steering wheel on my boat and it’s held up just fine going on 2 yrs 👍
Would love to see an SR5 Power window, cruise control, etc install with oem parts! loving the toyota content!
I put a v6 cluster in a 4cyl 1994 I was able to adjust tachometer with the screw didn’t need a resistor
How rare are those trucks? Cause I really want to buy one and do that gauge cluster swap on it.
My steering wheel looked like that on my 4runner, I bought the leather kit on Amazon and sewed it myself, and it looks like OEM brand new. Your steering wheel didnt come with leather from the factory, but it would still look really good
dude madd props on the adjustment hope it works on 96 tacos 3.4 w rpm for 2.7 w/0
My question is how did you know where the soldering needed to happen for the resistor to happen? I've wanted to change the light color on my switches around the doors but wouldn't even know where to begin
Leather wrap and stitch kit for you wheel. It’ll be better than new.

The work you do is amazing.
since you were in the gauge cluster, would that be a good place to lube a bouncy speedometer?
I have the same issue in cold weather lunch and afternoon it’s quiet no bounce
Fun stuff. Thanks.
My Toyota pickup had that exact same gauge display! The one you put in. I miss it. :(
I've never refinished a steering wheel, but I detail cars. Go to Walmart and get chemical guys total interior cleaner and protectant. If that doesn't work, get some super clean or LAs totally awesome, but if thats worn down, I don't know 😕

Why did he use a resister ?
Cool build
Where's a good place to get a sending unit for the oil pressure gauge?
Say, when you swapped out the gauge panel, did you get to change the odometer reading to what it's supposed to be?
Yeah Austin use cerakote on it - Devin use it all the time ...

You should put on 2nd gen 4runner mirrors on it it will look better
Hello sir i did a sr5 cluster swap on my 2.8 diesel and i have a problem making my tach work, do you have any idea what the problem is?
Hey Austin, what does the resistor do on the cluster? I found a 4 cyl cluster for my 3.0 and unfortunately saw this video too late... fried my oil pressure gauge and need to add a wire to get the tach to work... or do I need to add that resistor, too? TIA 👍🏻

Did you have to set the mileage for your engine on the cluster?
Hope you cleaned n polished the clear lense before replacing
I have a t100 I changed to leds on cluster do I need resister too
Does anyone know the part number for the oil pressure sensor?
To change headlights and taillights these days? Man that must be nice. Love the older Yota’s
Hi Austin, where did you get your oil pressure sending unit from ?
I enjoy watching your videos,👍🏻🤝from Kazakhstan 🇰🇿
Red buck skin Leather rap double helix Cross-stitch in green ,
Bloody hell I think you could do it too!!
Lookin great, and the truck isn’t bad either 😉
Will it work on a 2.7?
So now your cluster will show different milage

What about spraying the wheel with the raptor liner. That way it will match the truck 🤔🤔🤯
I would really like to switch miroros and get rid of the wing windows looks a lot cleaner and I bet its easer to see. love to see a parts list for this.
You can make your own Banjo bolt style spacer
What scanner was that Austin?
Just a cheapo amazon special! Works good though!
How much for a really cool aftermarket steering wheel? Or just keep your eye out for a nicer one at the junkyard
Gday Austin. I’m planning on doing a similar door card setup in my Hilux, you able to recommend some American wreckers that would be able to ship those Tacoma door parts to aus? Cheers!
Colourlock to repair the steering wheel if it is a leather or synthetic. They make fillers and dyes in a lot of the OE colors.
Lots of RUclips videos on refinishing the wheel…I’m going to do my two Tacoma’s and my Tundra.
I wish I had half your mechanical knowledge I watch all these different mechanical videos get it in my head I am going to do some work on my yota I get started and then I am like screw it I don’t know why anyone would want to do this crap lol

Don't forget back seat 🪑
You should look to swap over power windows, power locks and windows as well. I did all that from a donor 4runner as well as tilted steering wheel.
Tengo mi Toyota 22 r modelo 93 sencillo extracab pero el tablero no marca la precion de aceite ayuda amigo
leather wrap is what i did to mine
You could always wrap it in leather.
I did that to my3rd gen 4Runner. Here’s a link to a video I made on it.

Thank you! I ordered one up!!
you planning on lifting the green Toyota or?
Probably leave it as is!
Try a dye spray or you get this leather kit
i am pretty sure that's what steering wheel covers are for .
vinyl spray paint will do it. unless that original dash cluster was bad i don’t understand why the hell you wanna put in the work just swapping it out. and again the original steering wheel was nicer and matched but you swapped it with another one. i mean after all that you didn’t gain a single hp.
We want more videos from more minutes
what about that thing devin did to his dash flakking is it called lol
Can’t see the steering wheel up close. If it has stitches, it is wrapped in leather and you can simply remove the old, match it, and put on new leather. I did it to my old dodge.
So the milage is now off. 🤔 I guess hopefully it's a lower number. I know the motor been swaped but the chassis.
Do a steering wheel leather wrap
Raptor line the steering wheel
I wrapped my wheel with paracord on my 2nd gen runner cause it was worn out like yours.
ruclips.net/video/sStxk4mv_DY/видео.html Here’s a good video on fixing a steering wheel! Not sure if it’s the same kind of wheel but might be doable.
Wrap the wheel in paracord
