Excellent video, I am restoring an 88 pickup and wanted to replace the heater core O-rings. The hardest part was removing the passenger side HVAC vent. I found it will come out easily if an old credit card is made into a clip release. Bend the card 1/8” on one end, helps if the edges have a 1/4” radius, insert the card between the top of the vent and pad to disengage one clip then slide it over to release the other one, repeat for the lower clips.

To get the heater core you need to remove that metal dash brace. Then disconnect the two coolant hones on the firewall in the engine bay. Then unbolt the box from the rest of the hvac, and it should come right out. Just be gentle when removing those hose clamps, the copper pipe on the heater core bends easily.

@@6thGearGarage my question would be, I guess, 2 parts. 1) Do you have to remove the lower dash frame and vent feeders to access the mounting points? 2) Where are the mounts located for this piece of trim, and how many mounts are there? With the top pad and cluster shroud out I can only see (2) 10mm bolts mounting it, one on either end positioned horizontally connecting at the base of the A pillars.
1. I'm pretty sure the whole dash needs to be pulled, or at least the pad and cluster surround... it's been a while since I've removed one but I've always had the dash removed before removing that little metal strip. 2. They're across the inside at the bottom of the windshield. Maybe 5 or 6 10mm bolts. It's a really tight fit to get them out. With the universal joint, the socket is still pressing against the inside of the windshield while removing the bolts.
Love the video! What an awesome resource. I feel a bit silly though... I've got a YN63 4Runner and the glovebox has a flexible curtain above it. I cannot figure out how to detach the curtain so that I can remove the glovebox. In your video, it is either broken or simply not present like it is on mine.
I haven't seen the curtain before, only a piece of black vinyl. The vinyl has 2 metal spring clips on each end of the one side, and the other side has a few built in push clips on a piece of plastic trim. I think.. It's been a while since I've had a truck that still had that piece.
@6thGearGarage yep, that flexible piece of vinyl is what I was describing as a curtain. I don't know a better word for it, haha! I found the wire clips and left it hanging in there for now. Thanks! I was trying to disconnect it from the top but it wasn't really necessary after all.
Thank you for providing this video. It helped me a lot. But I do not have climate and clock controls because my son broke it into pieces. Do you have any of it?
@@6thGearGarage thank you for your reply. If you get one of these pieces, post a video to buy them from you, because in my country there is none of them. Thank you again.
Sorry I do not, this one doesn't have AC. I had one truck with AC and there wasn't a separate harness under the hood for the AC, I think it was integrated into the entire harness. I think you'd be better off running a new rire for the AC compressor and then I believe the HVAC wiring under the dash is separate from the rest of the harness so you can pick one up at a junk yard and add it to your current harness. I'm not 100% on that, but I think that's how it was.
Excellent Video, it helped me piece together the interior on my '88 Xtra Cab. Also, have you run into any issues with your cruise control not working? Mine suddenly stopped working a few months after I got it. Not sure what the cause of the problem is, the cruise light lights up but it doesn't hold the gas pedal in place.
Hey man looove your account ! Super smooth dialogue. QUESTION THOUGH: HOW do you even remove the vent Panel on the dash thay goes around the Instruments Cluster ?
Thanks!! The only way I have found to remove that vent is to take out the trim piece around the cluster and then you can release the vent from the backside.
Great video thank you now on to the heater core. Can the copper tubes be removed and replaced with heater hose for a better seal? In other words are there any hot mods for heater cores connection
I have never seen that done before, as the copper tubes are part of the heater core. The heater core would have to be cut and that would increase the chance of a leak inside the cab.
Sorry I do not have a video, but once you remove the dash pieces, you can see all the connections. There's one that goes under the carpet on right side, through the floor to the rear of the truck. Another goes up the left A-pillar to the mirror. If you have power doors, you'll have some extra work.
SInce you have gutted the interior, I was wondering if you know how to get the cover off the map lights. I can see no release point and hate to damage the cover. Any advise is appreciated. Thks..jc
This truck only had the single dome light, like most of them have. It just pops right out, you may need to give it a gently pry with a tiny flat head. If the clear cover is brittle and cracks, that's normal. You can still get them new from the dealership. For the SR5 dual map light, I'll look around and see if I have one in my parts collection to see how it comes apart.
I don't understand the question, but I think you mean the HVAC face plate? There is a plug that plugs in to the HVAC unit that lights it up when the headlights are turned on.
Just make sure it's centered with the front wheels pointing straight. If it's slightly off, then rotate the steering wheel over 1 spline at a time until it's perfect.

Here's My Hack: Since these trucks are so old the vent plastic is very brittle and prying on it can easily crack or break it. Once you have the right side vent off and the right side dash retaining nut that secures to a fixed stud, NEVER reinstall that nut again. It will allow you to quickly and easily remove the dash pad in the future, as I have done many times since. Instead, wrap some thin medical cloth tap around the stud threads enough to fill the dash tab hole it protruded through. It will hold the dash in place and prevent any metal on metal rubbing sound. The center dash slip clip and the 5 under side dash screws will more than enough keep the dash pad secure at that end. Never had any issues with noise or vibration. It's a time and broken part saver.
Do you mean the HVAC control unit shown at 10:00 in the video? The only thing left holding it in place are the 4 cables connected to the push levers (just unhook them) and then unplug the wiring harness and it will come out.
Awesome video. Maybe a stupid question but can anyone tell me if a 93 Toyota pickup dash would fit on an 88 Toyota pickup cab? Both trucks are 22re gas 4x4. The 93 is a regular cab, the 88 is extended cab. Are the mounts the same? I have a low miles running 93 cab/engine and an 88 needs an engine and the 88 computer is iffy so I was going to try the 93 computer, therefore the 93 dash/instrument cluster? Or maybe keep the 88 dash and just swap in the cluster? Please feel free to tell me I'm crazy but I'd really appreciate some real info on this. Thanks
I've removed both dashes and I can for sure say they aren't compatible. Also there are going to be some slight differences on those 22RE's with emissions/electronics. The good news is that you can buy used running 22R/RE's for $500 or less. Or the best option for using parts from your 93 would be to pull the motor and use the 93 head/block with the 88 intake/wiring, but then you'd still need a new ECU for the 88. But as far as mixing and matching, the block and head are going to be the only things identical on both trucks.
@@6thGearGarage Thanks 6th Gear! This is very helpful and makes a lot of sense. Glad I asked before trying to swap the dash. This 88 came to me with a 93 already swapped into it but they used the 93 Intake with the 88 computer without any re-wiring. It barely ran. Its a bit of a nightmare. My first thought was to get a replacement 88 but I went through two already and they both turned out to be junk. I can't find a running 88. I jumped on the 93 cause it had low miles and great compression. Could I just use an 88 intake on this 93 block/head? If only I had one of those!
@@jeffdyer21 If you are looking for one with no cracks, good luck. I would start by checking eBay every week, and even then a crack free one is usually over $500
Yeah, it's an 86. If the cable doesn't have as much slack, try feeding more in through the firewall from the engine bay. Maybe it got pulled back out for some reason.
Awesome videos!!! I just got a really rough 85 pickup but im planning on rebuilding it with a 3.4. I also really wish it was a 4runner so I am looking at swapping the cab. Do you know if the mounting points match? It is a short bed standard cab.
your truck for the vents is not amazing, it can break them really easily, it’s much better (and safer) to just bend the clips because it’s pretty much guaranteed the the plastic will crack or is already cracked
so, where's the heater core? for me, there's a lot more to it. 4 more 10mm bolts on top for the metal frame (spring flex tool) and duct work, but am unable to get the entire heater core box out.
After the metal dash support beam is out, the heater core box should be free. You got the 2 coolant lines removed right? Last thing to check is around the perimeter of the box with a bright flash light and see if you missed any bolts.

Great video presentation and skill. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@littledidheknow802 Yes the block and 22re head should be the same from 85 to 95, so the 1988 intake manifold will bolt to the 1993 head.
@@6thGearGarage I'm looking for a dash pad for an '86 base model, preferably brown. Any chance you have one or know where I could look? Thanks.
@@jeffdyer21 If you are looking for one with no cracks, good luck. I would start by checking eBay every week, and even then a crack free one is usually over $500
Is that an 86? Because my speedo cable is not as accessible like yours was.
Yeah, it's an 86. If the cable doesn't have as much slack, try feeding more in through the firewall from the engine bay. Maybe it got pulled back out for some reason.
Will give it a try when I to get to it this winter. Thanks....Jim
@@6thGearGarage It worked. Just needed some slack. Just enough. Thanks jc
Exellent! Thank you Sir!
Very helpful. Thank you.
Awesome videos!!! I just got a really rough 85 pickup but im planning on rebuilding it with a 3.4. I also really wish it was a 4runner so I am looking at swapping the cab. Do you know if the mounting points match? It is a short bed standard cab.
I’ve never done the swap but I’ve read that the rear mounts are different and will need to be fabricated.
your truck for the vents is not amazing, it can break them really easily, it’s much better (and safer) to just bend the clips because it’s pretty much guaranteed the the plastic will crack or is already cracked
They really do break easily. I've had a couple break on me before.
Great video thanks
Nesesito el control de clima de un toyota 85 pick up serca de los angeles c.a por favor
I know this video is a little old, but I have an 87 22r pickup as well. My two center vents stopped blowing. Any idea why?
I can’t say I’ve seen that happen before
@@6thGearGarage thanks for the fast reply man! You got a new subscriber.
so, where's the heater core?
for me, there's a lot more to it.
4 more 10mm bolts on top for the metal frame (spring flex tool)
and duct work, but am unable to get the entire heater core box out.
After the metal dash support beam is out, the heater core box should be free. You got the 2 coolant lines removed right? Last thing to check is around the perimeter of the box with a bright flash light and see if you missed any bolts.
Great video, thanks.
When removing the steering wheel don't take the bolt off the whole way just incase you smash the steering wheel into your face
Good call!!
Where can I get a replacement dash pad? mine looks like the one you removed.
I haven't found anyone who sells them, only thin covers to sit on top of the cracked dash.
@@6thGearGarage same here.
@@paulgugger8987 I know it's possible to re-wrap a dash. I've seen it done on other cars. I need to figure out that process and make a video.
@@6thGearGarage it is a good idea to make a video. I habe the same problem.....
Check out Just Dashes in California. Seem to be the experts on restoring dash pads. Mr Corsetti Who restores FJ60 Landcruisers has used that company to restore his Toyota dash pads. They are a little pricey though. They quoted me $900 just to restore my cracked passenger side dash pad.
Do you have the A/C button assembly for an 88 pickup you would want to get rid of?
I don't have any right now. Most of the trucks I get up here in Ohio don't have AC.
6th Gear Garage ok yeah mine has it but the button was broke off by the previous owner and finding one has been a really big challenge. I found some off the 4 runners but the connections are different.
@@joshuasands8518 I wasn't aware there was more than one type for the 84-88 pickups and 84-89 4runners.
Yeah I didn’t either mine has a two prong plug and a separate plug that’s green on it the 4 runners have just a three prong plug
Are the 84 pickups and 86 4Runner dashes compatible
Pancho Mendes yeah 84-86 are the same,
in 87 the recessed area on the top became a smaller rectangle and the right vent was slightly different.
I have a 1987 Toyota pick up do you want to sell any of your plastic I need the passenger vent along with the carrier and the steering wheel clamshell covers? Love to have a dash pad to if you have one brown
The parts you are looking for are the ones that are always broken on these trucks 🙁
I am subbed to your channel.. I have an 86 shortbed pick up with a 12.7-13.2 gallon fuel tank... Do you know if the 86 long bed pick up 19.2 gallon fuel tank will fit my short bed? I have searched and searched... Noone has an answer.. . i would like to extend the driving range of my truck..
Also.. I plan on upgrading my cluster to the SR5 cluster.. For the added RPM gauge
Thank you...
I have the gas tank from my 86 1-ton pickup, which had the 7 foot utility bed. Are you in Ohio? You can have it for free if you want it. It's a little rusty but it worked fine. If not, I can measure it for you.
@@6thGearGarage my truck is in tempe AZ... Bro... Do you have a patreon? I have no way of getting it but i want to pay it forward as a THANK YOU and donate to your extremely helpful channel... If somehow i was able to get your fuel tank... I would buy it from you along with the brackets and mounting straps.... Do you know if a good freight company that could ship it? Can the tank ship via greyhound?
@@camposvazquez I don't have patreon, just happy to have people subscribe and watch & share my vids. Honestly, the tank is probably not worth shipping costs. It has some rust where it mounted to the frame supports. I'll see what I can find out about tank size compatibility and let you now.
@@6thGearGarage thank you.... If you make shirts or merchandise.. I will support you... I have tge largest toyota dealership in tge world near me .. They didnt have an answer... I dont have you level of skill to figure these scenarios out.. I would love to increase the driving range...
I have shared your channel with my other toyota bro's...
Campos Vazquez I measured the long bed tank and the standard bed tank and the long bed's tank is about 6" longer. I looked to see if there was room to mount on the standard pickup, but wouldn't fit without some heavy modification to the cross brace bar going across the frame. Even then the tank would sit close to the rear axle. Looks like it's not gonna work.
Rafael 👍
Couldn't you just drop the entire steering wheel assembly/column down by unbolting it entirely and letting it fall down?
Yes that will also work 👍
Thanks no more guss work.
Where I can buy a full dashboard
I'd look for someone local parting out a toyota or a junk yard. If nothing local, check ebay.
Gracias

Does anyone in here have a suggestion restore parts just bought an 88 hilux for project
I use ebay for oem parts, sometimes dealership if they are still available.
Got mine all apart, 3 more hours until kids go to bed and then its "wrap time"!!
You're recovering your cracked dash? I want to do that to mine too.
