I didn't immediately realize that he had done both Pacific and MOA, but when I heard the horn sections of both productions, the similarities became clear to me: There is something in common here. I don't know much about music, but I can recognize great productions like these.

@ nah dude just the whole atmosphere of the show was bad. It tried WAY too hard to be band of brothers. They fucked up the uniforms on so many different levels, the special effects were terrible in a lot of the scenes.

I still feel that we need a Navy dedicated series. Not 95% marine dedicated like the Pacific (which is my favorite). The real naval battles of Midway, Wake Island, Philippine sea etc. Maybe even start at Pearl Harbour.

@@davaemaximus9333 I wonder if a navy show would have similar problems to Masters of the Air. Of course it was great, but I feel the way in which the story is told and the pacing is off for a lot of it which is probably due to the nature of the show being almost entirely within the bombers and the bases etc. BoB and The Pacific felt a lot more natural at least to me.

Yes, I totally agree with you. I think they had the worst theater to fight in. Everything, food, water, ammunition, medical, weapons, etc had to be brought in by ship. None of that was there when they invaded an island unless of course what was captured from the Japanese. There were no roads already built, houses or towns to take shelter in, nothing. Just jungle, insects, rain, disease, rough terrain, none of the comforts of a civilized, established world.

I think that’s very accurate, my grandfather was a marine in the pacific and he very seldomly talked about it, but when asked about how he would’ve described the Japanese, he said he was sure they’re a very honorable people but good god they’re brutality was unmatched, they weren’t a surrendering type of people. His brother was in Europe and described the Germans as excellent soldiers and hard fighters, every inch was contested but they atleast surrendered when they were beat.

BoB is great drama, story telling. But the revelations about the numerous errors, of which Ambrose, Hanks and Spielberg were aware, diminishes the series. The willful dishonesty to create characters is tragic. Liebgott, Speers, Sobel, Sink, Dike, Blithe, all were poorly and frequently deliberately misrepresented to create drama. This dishonor to honorable men needs to be corrected.

@@miguelservetus9534 Their mangling of history in Saving Private Ryan is appalling. Col Mike Reynolds Spielbergs military advisor for the film, told him the SS weren't in the area, Spielberg told him "The SS sells films" he sacked Reynolds as Reynolds drove away up from the beach he noticed the beach defences were facing the wrong way and thought fcuk it. In the film Gen Marshall is seen at the Pentagon reading the letter to a mother who lost 5 sons, no such letter existed and was never sent. Apart from that with the film timeline, Marshall wasn't in Washington, he was in Normandy with Eisenhower. Despite what Capt Miller says about fighting the SS The 17th SS arrived long after Miller was killed on 17th June, they were delayed by elements of the 82nd Airborne at Graiges who when they had to surrender the 17th SS murdered. The continuity errors in the film are poor especially the bit where the squad are seen leaving the beach area in a jeep and trailer, the next cut is to them walking across a field. As for the film crew in shot near the end of the film it's laughable. They go to all the trouble of making a reasonable fake Tiger tank and then give the cupola hatch the property qualities of a beer tray, as for Miller firing the Thompson through the vision slot, do me a favour. An actor famous for acting as a barman in a soap then tells us he didn't rate Monty and he should get on with it well it was less than a week after the landings and the bridgehead hadn't been joined up, they were still landing stores and men in accordance with the agreed plan and were nowhere ready to break out. The first 20 minutes are the best bits.

All three of these series were simply superb.
Band of brothers show us the true comaderies that are made in war and immensly strong bond that these men had. It was truly a masterpiece.
The pacific is by far, if not the, most brutal depiction of Combat in the pacific ever put to film. It has humbled many and Given nightmares to many more. It was also an incredible production that didn't hold back about the brutalities of war. The DVD box set has a very true statement in the bottom right hand corner. "Hell was an ocean away".
Masters of the was very good. I was pleased and also very moved by the stories told. They really showed how fast lives were lost up the skies of europe. You felt the true nature of loss and sacrifice the Army airforce suffered....and suffered they did.
Now to round off the ultimate WW2 American trilogy we would need a Naval story...maybe that followed a ship, maybe multiple crew members from seperate ships.
USS Massachusetts? USS Wesr Virginia? US navy destroyers in the pacific?
    US submarine warfare?
    All fantastic concepts.

This you can read at the gravesites in Normandy : 2 Timothy 4:6-8 New King James Version (NKJV)
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race,
    I have kept the faith.
Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing...

      @@inigobantok1579”dehumanization of the enemy”
The Japanese were disgusting during WWII, atrocities against a multitude of laws and statutes. Not only to America, but to China as well (Unit 731 and Nanjing etc etc).
The Pacific perfectly encapsulates the horrors those men had to face. As well as shows how disgusting the tactics were used against them by the Japanese.
So no, it wasn’t dehumanizing. It was true

Masters of The Air is great, but what stops it from being PHENOMENAL is that it’s too short. I wish it was at least 2-3 episodes longer, would’ve liked more Rosenthal missions. Overall, much stronger series than The Pacific IMO.

    • @jacobmiller6588
      @jacobmiller6588 3 месяца назад +1

The problem Is these are real events so they can only make a series last as long as the notes taken from the pilots and crewmen allow, they can't just go throw 3 false missions that Rosenthal ran just to make it last longer lol

By and far, the Pacific Theater of war was the hardest to win in. All food and ammunition and fresh water had to be shipped in. no roads or houses to quarter in, jungle, insects, extreme heat, no hospitals, plenty of disease. And fighting a tenacious enemy who believed suicide on the battlefield brought great honor to country, family, and Emperor.

I have often wondered what the "red hue" which arises throughout The Pacific introduction song symbolizes? Does it represent the Rising Sun of the Japanese Empire, the amount of blood that was spilled during these battles, or what?

Next miniseries should cover the Mediterranean theatre. It's often forgotten & was seen as secondary even during the war. Maybe the plot could cover an armoured crew in the 1st Armored Division or the Rangers. Or the 3rd Infantry Division. There was a great stop-motion mini based on the 45th Infantry that covered that part of the war but was too short.

This is not yet complete, for many stories remain to be told. Some have mentioned naval action, which should cover Navy, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine (Atlantic and Pacific), but also the home front (the dreaded telegram) of those who provided the means to prosecute the war, the special ops (commandos, OSS, Merrill's Mauraders), and the W.A.S.P (and others units). Many know of the USS Indianapolis, though perhaps not of the USS Juneau (only 10 survived). The journey is not yet complete...
