My great uncle, Eugene Moran, was a tail gunner in the 96th Bomb Group. He was shot down in November 1943 over Germany. The tail section that he was trapped in auto gyrated and he landed in a tree. He spent the next months as German POW camp until he was liberated in April 1945. This story is chronicled in the book Tailspin by John Armbruster. Eugene, until his death, had a metal plate in his skull resulting from German surgery as a POW.

I work part time for H R Block income tax preparation services. Our late founder Mr. Henry Bloch was a navigator on a B17 crew. He talked about his experience in his book sating on his first day in England and being showed his bunk. He told the British Sargent this bunk looks occupied the Sargent said it was yesterday. The bravery of all these hero's could never be honored enough. Mr Bloch was Jewish if shot down over nazi Germany he would have faced death God bless them all.
