An excellent review of a fantastic item. I started rowing on a Model D 16 years ago and it's changed my life massively for the better. I was in the top 1% for 10k at one point, but it's amazing whatever level you are at, it literally covers everyone from being as easy as walking to world class. Buy one, you will get out of it what you put in, believe me!
Thank you for posting this video! I am about to purchase my first concept 2 rower, and I had a lot of questions that you be able to answer for me! Appreciate it!
This is an excellent overall review of the Concept 2 Model D indoor rower… very comprehensive and nicely narrated! As someone else suggested, I’d either lower the volume of the background music while the narration is in progress- or maybe only use the music at the beginning, in the cut scenes between the narrated segments, and at the end of the video. I have this exact rower at home btw (picked it up late 2020 after all of the gyms closed due to Covid)… my wife and I both bang on it twice a week, and we love it.
Great review. From the reviews I've watched already no one described (if at all) the various aspects of the PM5 as well as you did. Your overall presentation of this Concept 2 is the best I've come across so far. You're good and you should have way more subscribers. I liked and subscribed.
What a great and thorough review! Thank you so much. We're on the waiting list for the Concept2 and as the order date approaches, we're reviewing and researching all kinds of rowers. Your video is super helpful to our decision making process!
Great! My advice is to hold out for what you want! Don't get discouraged, wait times for all the quality machines are long right now. Sometimes people will opt for something lower quality because it will arrive in two weeks rather than four. Our advice is to wait for what you want, you won't regret it later. You'll love the C2!
I’m on the waiting list as well. After looking at others do you think this is the one you will go with? I was also liking the Hydro but its twice the price!!
@@backtobody Hi - yes, we've decided to buy the Concept2 when our waitlist turn comes (in about 10 days!). We considered Hydrow, Ergatta, Total Gym Rower, NordicTrack's... besides all being more expensive, many require a plug or wifi, and although that would be ok most of the time, we like that the C2 is unplugged with a battery monitor that gets great praise. The feet placement of Concept2 vs. water rowers is more ideal, and it's just a workhorse. We plan to move it outside on nice days and row on our patio or deck, just lighter weight and offers more freedom. We'll also stand it up when not in use. We don't think we'd get the value out of the large-screen bells and whistles others come with, or use those features much. Some programs require subscriptions too, so more ongoing costs. Too many pros for the C2 to pass it up, in our opinion. Happy hunting!
Really good review here. I picked up one of these 2nd hand and I am looking forward to retiring my Tunturi model 701R. My Summer workout on the water this year in my Alden 18 consists of 3 legs: 7.5 km, rest onshore for 10-15 minutes; 5 km, onshore rest 5-10 minutes; final leg 2.5 km. I usually do about 20-24 strokes per minute, then up to about 27 strokes for the final couple of minutes of each leg.. By the way, you have a very good stroke, would love to have you on the Alden 18 with me : )
Great review. I am seriously considering purchasing one. I was concerned about noise, but the air/fan noise is much less of an issue for me than walking/running/jumping noise transfer to my downstairs neighbor.
Good call. While the rower does make a bit of fan noise while you're rowing, it's nothing compared to the thudding of a treadmill. This won't disturb neighbors.

I waited the better part of five months for mine. It's an enormous investment up here in Canada, but because it's always been one of my four fitness foundations, and because I've always used one at the local YMCA, I knew I had take the plunge. Best...investment...ever. My only complaint is the buildup of black gunk on the roller wheels that bring on a clicking/kajunking noise.
Can you tell me more about the build up of the "Black Gunk? How long after you started using the machine did you notice this build up? Can you watch and hear a tv while rowing? She mentioned that this machine makes a lot of noise.
@@iamric23 Hey, Eddie. The black gunk accumulates after every workout. It takes two minutes to remove with a non-abrasive pad. I wish they could solve this problem, but I can live with the maintenance requirement. As for the noise... Yes, there's a throaty 'WHOOOSH!' going on while you're working out. But seriously, it's about a third as noisy as a vacuum cleaner. For me, it's a non-issue.
@@probitionate Curious if you ever contacted the company to find out if the black gunk was a normal sort of thing? Maybe they mention this in the manual?
@@iamric23 My daughter, who actually bought the rower for me, has been in touch with C2. It's just standard maintenance. (FWIW, there are all kinds of videos here in the YT universe that address The Black Gunk.)
I had a go on one of these at a retailer and was very disappointed. I'm not a rower and although I use other cardio gym equipment I've never really used rowers so perhaps I just wasn't using it correctly? The problem was that even on maximum resistance it wasn't difficult enough and there was virtually no resistance on my legs. I was only on there for 5 mins but my legs just weren't getting anything. I much prefer cross-trainers (ellipticals) and vertical stepper machines but I live on a boat and my ceiling height is too low.
sounds like the one you used was messed up. I row with the fan set around 5/6 and I get a decent leg workout b/c a good row stroke is powered mostly from the legs. If your feet were set too high, then the thighs get in the way and that does lessen the leg drive. It's better to err on the side of having the feet set lower than higher.
I’ve never rowed before, but I notice Apple fitness has rowing as an option. I’m not looking for the cheapest rower but I wasn’t looking to spend as much as the concept2. Any recommendations for mid tier rowers ?
We typically don't recommend any rowers that are below $900 because the lower you go in price the more you will sacrifice quality. Can you share what your budget is? That will help us make a better recommendation.
What is the range of motion for the screen arm? Can I move it completely out of the way so that I can watch TV Or RUclips's of rowing as I row. I wanted to buy the Hydrow but you can't hook anything into that beautiful monitor they provide so as to extort you into a membership. I do not like any company that limits my purchase so I will have to continue to purchase. So Screw that, and Screw Hydrow for their greed. I will continue comparing thank you for your review
My problem is that the rower likes to move around on any normal floor. My solution is to just use an old cardboard box with some light ballast in it to absorb the movements.
@@StuMr66 It's only moving a few millimetres per stroke but after 45 minutes you move across the room once or twice. It's not about technique it's about friction and there is not enough on parquet floor which is all i have in my appartment.
Concept 2 doesn't make a non-air rower that would be quieter. You could look at a hybrid rower such as the Nordictrack RW600 which combines both air and magnetic resistance so it is a bit quieter. The Hydrow rower is solely magnetic so it is very quiet but comes with an attached touchscreen and requires a subscription.
@@claudiacanales2662 Not noisy Bought via concept company. But did wait for a few months Company very good at keeping informed of stock. And when we were to receive
Of the rowing machines we've tested, the Hydrow is extremely quiet and we would highly recommend checking that machine out. Another quiet option you might want to look into is the ProForm 750R, it's not the best rower on the market by any means, but it's extremely silent while you row. Let me know if you have any follow up questions.
I am seriously thinking about buying one of these. Can anyone tell me what typically breaks or malfunctions first on one of these? I use my exercise equipment a minimum of 4 times a week for 45 minutes year after year and recently wore out an elliptical machine in less than 6 years. From what I have read these rowers are very durable. Thank you in advance for any information you might have.
The Concept 2 rowers is one of the most durable pieces of fitness equipment on the market. They don't break, and if something needs to be repaired, it usually super easy.
Since I've been told by my son in law (a fitness instructor) most gyms prefer these I would say that is a testament to their durability. I also have a cousin who is a competitive rower and he claims this is the "gold standard" for dry land training. There are lots of videos, including on the Concept 2 website about maintenance. Most of the machine is pretty basic mechanically. Concept 2 has a list of replacement parts which you can purchase, I'm pretty sure that most folks could reasonably replace most parts as needed with the videos available.
@@CharlesAGray thx! I am on the wait list. Should be end of Feb get the chance to order. Appreciate the info on shipping/duty. Not bad and worth the price.
Just received the concept 2 model D rowing machine. Seems really good so far, however. They really need to add some cushion to the seat for boney ass guys like myself, or at least an option of paying more for something way more comfortable. I already have a soft towel on the seat after just 2 minutes of rowing. 2nd thing I was not thrilled about was the straps for securing the feet. Takes way too long to get my feet out of them, so I am already going without them. Sorry, not trying to beat up on this machine, I like the mechanics of it, just these two items.
The Model D is the standard rower and the Model E sits higher off the floor, so it's better for larger users or those with limited mobility. Otherwise they offer the same functionality.
Yes, it most likely would. The Concept2 is a fantastic air rower, but it's loud. We measured it at around 80-82 decibels when you're rowing hard. It would be challenging to watch TV while using it (unless you have wireless headphones that will sync with your TV).
@CHAD SPEER I take it by your reply that you own the concept 2 -D? If so would you have any recommendations, I am about to buy one. Maintenance wise, is there anything that pops out that might be a concern?
@@iamric23 we agree with @Chad Speer - the Concept2 Model D is the best air rower on the market. It is worth the wait. Very few maintenance issues. Mostly just make sure to keep the chain clean and lubricate occasionally. Otherwise this rower is practically indestructible. Unlike other equipment that can be fragile, these rowers are built to withstand Cross Fit athletes, so they can handle anything.
You have to put your name on a waiting list on the Concept 2 website to get a rower. We did so and it took a few months to get one, but it is worth the wait!
Can you compare this rower to Octane Ro? I like this one too but also like Concept 2 but is sold out 3months searching. So can you compare Octane Ro rower? Or compare with Assault elite rower? Please, ill contribute to buy news review. Thank you Madam

We had to wait for a long time as well! Due to manufacturing and shipping delays from Covid, the Concept 2 rower is backordered right now. But we did get ours eventually and we think it's worth the wait!
Good video, however, the cell phone Db app is a joke, you should use a real Dba meter, I doubt very much that the rower is 82Dba, jack hammer is 90Dba.. I have this rower and I can watch and hear rowing training sessions. I can have a conversation without raising my voice. So in is likely in the 60DBa range
the resistance is more than adequate. It's not a Nautilus lat pull machine--it's for rowing. Athletes at all levels of conditioning are able to get a great workout from it.

Great review. We just received ours... any information on heart rate monitoring..?
Thank you
I think you can connect one through Bluetooth and it’ll show up on the moniter
@Keely where did you buy it from and are you happy with your purchase? I really want to get one but hear it’s very loud!
@@claudiacanales2662
Not noisy Bought via concept company. But did wait for a few months Company very good at keeping informed of stock. And when we were to receive
Such a great, thorough review....thank you!
is there a quieter one you recommend as well?
Of the rowing machines we've tested, the Hydrow is extremely quiet and we would highly recommend checking that machine out. Another quiet option you might want to look into is the ProForm 750R, it's not the best rower on the market by any means, but it's extremely silent while you row. Let me know if you have any follow up questions.
great review, subscribed
I am seriously thinking about buying one of these. Can anyone tell me what typically breaks or malfunctions first on one of these? I use my exercise equipment a minimum of 4 times a week for 45 minutes year after year and recently wore out an elliptical machine in less than 6 years. From what I have read these rowers are very durable. Thank you in advance for any information you might have.
The Concept 2 rowers is one of the most durable pieces of fitness equipment on the market. They don't break, and if something needs to be repaired, it usually super easy.
@@TreadmillReviewGuru Thank you for replying.
Great review. Now if only I could find one to buy in Canada. Sold out everywhere and resellers want double the price 😓
Order straight from Concept2 using the wait list. Takes 2 months and comes out to $1550 CDN after all the import fees ect.
@@CharlesAGray thx! I am on the wait list. Should be end of Feb get the chance to order. Appreciate the info on shipping/duty. Not bad and worth the price.
Excellent Review!!!
Does this fold up for an apartment
it can be split into two parts quite easily. But the easiest is to just leave it as is, maybe putting it alongside a wall.
Thank you ...superb review 10/10 ...👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼💕💕💕👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glad you liked it
Will it work with a user who's 6ft 8in tall??
Training Tall on RUclips uses one and he's 6'8". He says somewhere he's still got some room to spare with it, unlike a lot of rowing machines.
Great review
Is this working with Garmin watches?
Just received the concept 2 model D rowing machine. Seems really good so far, however. They really need to add some cushion to the seat for boney ass guys like myself, or at least an option of paying more for something way more comfortable. I already have a soft towel on the seat after just 2 minutes of rowing. 2nd thing I was not thrilled about was the straps for securing the feet. Takes way too long to get my feet out of them, so I am already going without them. Sorry, not trying to beat up on this machine, I like the mechanics of it, just these two items.
Concept has a seat cushion. Also there are probably cushy seat options online you could buy.
I would not recommend using it without the foot straps.
good review - just wish you would have shown level of difficulty to fold unit for storage.
There are videos showing that. It's very, very easy.
I'm looking at getting one of these pretty soon. However, I'm 6 foot 7.. would i be too tall for it do you think?
No, you should be fine. The Concept2 will support tall users just fine.
As long as your inseam is 38” or less you’ll have no issues.
Hi there , the model d is newer than model e? Thanks
The Model D is the standard rower and the Model E sits higher off the floor, so it's better for larger users or those with limited mobility. Otherwise they offer the same functionality.
Hello, could anyone tell me if the sound that the machine makes would obstruct me from hearing a tv while I am rowing?
Yes, it most likely would. The Concept2 is a fantastic air rower, but it's loud. We measured it at around 80-82 decibels when you're rowing hard. It would be challenging to watch TV while using it (unless you have wireless headphones that will sync with your TV).
@@TreadmillReviewGuru That's good to know, thanks. Sounds like the best rower for under $1,000
@CHAD SPEER I take it by your reply that you own the concept 2 -D? If so would you have any recommendations, I am about to buy one. Maintenance wise, is there anything that pops out that might be a concern?
@@iamric23 we agree with @Chad Speer - the Concept2 Model D is the best air rower on the market. It is worth the wait. Very few maintenance issues. Mostly just make sure to keep the chain clean and lubricate occasionally. Otherwise this rower is practically indestructible. Unlike other equipment that can be fragile, these rowers are built to withstand Cross Fit athletes, so they can handle anything.
I'm not sure why people are saying these are loud. Owned 2 and you can definitely watch TV and hear it. These are not loud
It's sad that I want an rowing machine tmr but this is not available anywhere on the internet
You have to put your name on a waiting list on the Concept 2 website to get a rower. We did so and it took a few months to get one, but it is worth the wait!
Great video. Would love to see future videos without the background music. It is quite distracting and doesn't add a lot to the video.
Does a rowing machine burn belly fat?
there is no such thing as spot reduction, but it can facilitate getting into a calorie-deficit, which will lead to fat loss.
Can you compare this rower to Octane Ro? I like this one too but also like Concept 2 but is sold out 3months searching. So can you compare Octane Ro rower? Or compare with Assault elite rower? Please, ill contribute to buy news review. Thank you Madam
We don't have a video review yet, but we do have a written review of the Assault Air Rower. You can find it here:
www.treadmillreviewguru.com/assault-fitness-airrower-elite-rower-review/
highly recommend buying a used machine. then you can get it asap!
Thanks for the informing video .
great review.
How much for concept2 model D rower?
The Concept 2 model D is typically priced just under $1000. We don't sell them, but you can find them on the Concept 2 website here: www.treviewguru.com/RPconcept2modelD
@@TreadmillReviewGuru is this D model the latest model? Where is the best place to buy it from?
I used to paint 800-1200 of them a weak, that was a workout.
You're reviews are great! Thank you. I'm not sure how you decide which products to review but Vulcan Strength has its Skull rower on par with the Concept2 that might be worth reviewing.
Good input. Thanks!
Try COZWEAT!!!!!
It took me 2 months to get one of these.
We had to wait for a long time as well! Due to manufacturing and shipping delays from Covid, the Concept 2 rower is backordered right now. But we did get ours eventually and we think it's worth the wait!
Make a video of COZWEAT.
Send us an email.
Rowing is pushing not a pulling exercise.
much of it is from leg-push, but the upper body is doing some pull, so it's both.
Very detailed review, but how could you not fold it?? 🤦🏻♂️
Wow....she’s beautiful. Great review too!
Please stop with phone decibel meters, especially on phones put on the ACTUAL MACHINE! :) Otherwise great video!
The big thing this review fails to mention is that the resistance is inadequate for most people.
Then why do athletes use this machine?
the resistance is more than adequate. It's not a Nautilus lat pull machine--it's for rowing. Athletes at all levels of conditioning are able to get a great workout from it.
Gave up when you were describing everything in inches and pounds. Literally no-one outside America has a clue what you are on about.
That's a very good point. We will include metric data in our reviews moving forward. Sorry for the oversight.
@@TreadmillReviewGuru Thanks and sorry to sound grumpy, it seemed like a really thorough review otherwise but you know in fitness if you don't understand the numbers, it's difficult to compare.
No worries. If you want to know any specific measurements, let us know and we can measure it for you in cm :)
Just a wild guess but I bet the review was made in America.
@@drago987 so list units in metric and imperial so that almost all the world that doesn't use imperial measurements can follow along. Or lose viewers. Don't expect people to learn nonsense units to follow along.
The handle is a bio-mechanical abomination. Many, many users suffer from chronic wrist and elbow pain.
Well this seems to be THE rower. After your review I’m convinced. It’s time to jump in 🚣🏻
