Now that I know better to stay around 5-6, it’s literally like I’m doing nothing 😂 wish I owned one of these, and that the tension went higher hahaha.
The thing about the Concept2 is that your drive determines the resistance, just like in water. Think of moving your hand through water in a pool. Move your hand slowly, and it moves easily. Drive your hand as hard and fast as possible, and you'll feel a ton of resistance. On the rower, remember that the drive and the recovery shouldn't be the same speed. Your drive should be fast and explosive, giving you the higher resistance you're looking for, and your recovery should be slow and easy.
yeah depending on what you are doing...so if you are doing CrossFit or doing like fast intervals, like a max out 500m or something then you can pull like a mad man...I think these pro level rowers are never rowing for that short and max effort, so the longer you have to go the more you need technique. At least that is what I am thinking.
Great video - thank you for posting it. I appreciate that in addition to proper form, you addressed fan setting and a suggested time for beginners (like me). Very helpful overall.
I sometimes see the Princeton team rowing when I'm kayaking on Carnegie Lake, where this was filmed. Watching them helps my form on the water rower at Orangetheory.
This is such a great video! Other bad vids clutter the internet, too much “influencer” nonsense out there with cartoon-like instructions and wrong form. I’m really happy I found this… respectable Olympians giving rowing advice is all a simpleton like me could ask for. Just got my rower and very excited to learn proper form, build endurance and get strong. Thank you so much for this video!
I’m on our high school rowing team and I love this sport because it’s so hard and makes you so sore but it’s low impact (i have pretty bad ankles and wrists) and the team aspect makes it so good :)
Great advice from Olympic rowers. I rowed at university (Western Australia) at (eventually) stroke position, for several years in the 1970s. It is a great sport, particularly as everyone has to work together. I coxed too. I am still good friends with the rower at the other end of the boat, bow position. I would love to row again but no opportunities where I live, however, I will soon get a rowing machine ! Best wishes from Japan
Seriously? lol. When I used the same machine at my gym and the first time I didn't noticed because I was just trying it out. But the second time I actually looked for the difficulty level.
During a race, it's anerobic activity, which creates lots of lactic acid.... It makes your muscles very very painful, and it is one of (if not THE most) intense workout you could ever do, period.
I'm currently a member of a rowing association at my university. We sometimes joke around that if you're not puking/passing out after an ergo session, then you haven't worked hard enough... There is even this competition once per year where participants try to set the best 2k max time. There are 3 rooms full of rowingmachines. One for warming up, one for the actual race, and the last one for cooling down. In between the 2nd and 3rd room there is a small intermidiate room with bathrooms and trashcans for puking :/
Great tips, I'm the guy that crancks it up to ten and go hard for 5x4, but I'll will try to lower and go for longers sets instead! Rowing was my biggest fear but now it's my default workout!
Think of rowing like riding a bike so watch the videos and put the time in to get technique right - probably only an hour or two altogether. You don't get it from the first minute but once you get it you get it. I'd say only 1 person in 50 can actually use the concept 2 properly in the gym (and that took me a year to make that observation as they are used so little). It's really the best piece of aerobic equipment (forget the treadmill) - although the airdyne is pretty good. I'm nothing amazing or even good and row 2 minute 500s but this and outdoor cycling is my go to.
Rowing becomes anaerobic, especially in the last 1/4 mile. You are working at an oxygen deficit. It's like distance running or wrestling. I remember my workouts: going 10 miles and having coach turn us around for a workout, after running from campus to the boathouse and running stadium steps which get steeper, the higher you go and your legs shake and you feel like throwing up after doing 10. And then there's the ERG. And the butterflies before races. I rowed from 6th grade through college and loved it. Rowed with Olympians.
look up drag factor as it relates to indoor rowing, and you'll learn quite a bit. 120ish for men and 110ish for women seems to be rule of thumb, but there's definitely room for personal preference
I was going to a chiropractor for lower back pain. My job is physical, and it seemed like my back was always out, but sometimes it hurt worse. I asked him if there was anything I could do to help keep my back from getting misaligned, besides not doing my job (obviously). He recommended rowing to build up my back muscles. I got a water rower, and have been learning the technique, so I can't say if it will help or not, but it really is a good exercise that I wouldn't have tried otherwise.
Would have liked to have heard the experts talk about a stroke rate. I have friends doing all the wrong things. Damper set to 10 and rowing at like 30 strokes per minute.
Rowing is the best!! I wish she would have explained why she thinks it is bad to work the rowing machine at the highest setting. I love the resistance I get from the highest setting and often wish I could make it higher. And I also sometimes add curls to my rowing machine workout just for fun (never on the water in a real rowing situation, just on a machine) by alternating regular strokes with curl strokes and I have gotten amazing and super fast results in my biceps from doing this...
Often it’s bad to work at a higher setting, especially if you are newer, is because it puts more strain on the back and a lot of inexperienced rowers will hurt themselves as a result. Generally the only time you’ll see a tower put the drag factor at 10 is if they are doing a sprint piece, ie, 500
I remember when I used the rowing machine for the first time (and last time😂) I was going strooong, but oh my god for the next week I could barley walk and had to lift my legs with my arms
I just started rowing today instead of doing weight lifting and cardio, I think two days of the week I will do some chest but for the most part, I’m going full on rowing from now until however long. I’m going to post videos of my journey. Literally just saw a guy today at the gym doing those curling rowing they said is a big no no haha I’m glad I didn’t copy.
Music! Once your stroke gets established, find music with the same tempo as your rowing and your workouts will be great. Throw in a couple of quicker tracks followed by slower ones for HITT sessions. Try this - each one repeat 5 times Arms only Arms and torso only Legs only Arms, torso and legs Repeat in reverse order. Good technique and form is important when on a rowing machine. Breathe in on recovery and catch, breathe out on drive and finish.

Thank you this was great, I always kept my rower at 10 to achieve the highest resistance but seeing that actual water is about 5 lets me know that I have another option
So I started using the rowing machine at my gym. I rowed for 10 minutes straight above the 5 resistance line. I learned my lesson. I was in real pain, couldn’t get to sleep. I had to take CBD and Melatonin together. I’ve come to RUclips for guidance 😂
Cookies are scary.. I just bought a rowing machine to get some excersice after years of doing nothing, and this video gets recommended 5 years after its release. Thank you for the great tips though!
If you are just starting to use an erg take your time and work within your limits. The athletes here are world class, that’s why you see them pushed beyond their limits in the cut always. If new to the sport you are far better off on a slow rating of 20 to 22 at half pressure. Set the damper to around 5 and row for around 30 minutes. This will help build your stamina, loose weight and gain fitness. It’s surprising how quickly you improve.

I'm glad i got this right. My instructor when i got inducted to my most recent gym even showed himself bending his legs and then moving his arms forward, i thought this looked wrong and inefficient as it's surely adding distance for your arms to cover in going up over you legs and then back down.
Thanks ALOT for this is bought a row machine ”not sure oftare techincal term” 1 month ago and have been doing maybe 10 sets now combined with other workouts and i have Been doing SO MUCH WRONG 😂 Home today and start doing it right ❤️👍
Good video. Thanks. I just can't get over three things: 1. You're going backwards (I even stand up in a row boat and push the oars so I can face forward) 2. I never see any rowers outside the breakwater on the real ocean and 3. with teams there's someone yelling at you what to do. I won't even put up with that at work. And so I'm a sea kayaker-- which is great until I'm coming in from a run around a couple of oil platforms; I'm all full of myself, then someone on a skull elegantly passes me like I'm dragging an anchor.
WillN2Go1, I know chances are you probably don’t care that much but I’ll explain why this is the case. 1. Going backwards allows the use of the legs to a far greater extent, optimising available energy. Number 2. Due to the fragile nature of rowing shells, not only is it dangerous to the boat to row in rougher water but it also means that the oars will knock waves, stopping the boat from moving smoothly. 3. The person yelling, or the Cox. Is there to provide feedback and input as well as steer the boat. In a race this can often be info on where the other crews are, or calling out key focus points within the rowing stroke in order to maximise speed. A Cox isn’t necessarily required but they do help make the life easier for the crew.
@@IGenius2013 Thanks for the reply. I do understand most of the what and why, it's just not for me. A famous kayaker used to beat other kayakers by back paddling. I've never quite figured if this was legit or not. No doubt for rowing it is. Surfskis have full foot plates and can take the (less efficient forward) force of the legs, but almost all kayaks have pegs. (Nasty things). I've broken off every peg after no more than a year and a half. For the past ten years I've made full foot plates. I'm not getting rowing leg force, but I think my results indicate that no one but racers are actually using their kayaks as efficiently as even old me. (I'll bet the typical kayak pegs on a scull wouldn't last a month). Aleut iqyaxers (i-Kayak-ers) were reliably clocked at 10 knots over distance. I've figured out some of how they planed, but the energy needed even while planing is still about 7-8 knots . There's a trick with waves where if you plant the blade on the tops of waves (even 1 footers); It's like paddling 'downhill' in both directions-- to point out the contradictory nature of it. So all things being equal going backwards is more powerful, but it doesn't have to be (yet since about 1800 no one's quite put it all together). It might be possible for someone, strong enough, using rediscovered Aleut skills and an iqyax (aka baidarka), to beat a top rower-- but no one alive knows how. (The reliable source is Captain Cook's navigator. The Aleuts used to out paddle anything the Russians could put on the water.) I also wonder if the extremely narrow iqyaxs (I've built one) were even capable of solo paddling over long distances. I'm sure they could solo paddle, but taking a break probably required 'rafting' up-- which would make the world's greatest paddlers more like a rowing crew than one man one boat. If I rowed before I kayaked, I'd probably prefer it. I was an ocean swimmer before kayaking, and never considered kayaking until I wrecked my shoulders.

this blew my mind! I've been doing quite well on 10 but fuck i didnt know that Olympians row on 3-4...
yeah depending on what you are doing...so if you are doing CrossFit or doing like fast intervals, like a max out 500m or something then you can pull like a mad man...I think these pro level rowers are never rowing for that short and max effort, so the longer you have to go the more you need technique. At least that is what I am thinking.
concept 2 has quite a few good short videos on rowing technique - recommend you check those out if you're interested in the sport
That seems to be a quite a beautiful place where those guys are training.
I’m on our high school rowing team and I love this sport because it’s so hard and makes you so sore but it’s low impact (i have pretty bad ankles and wrists) and the team aspect makes it so good :)
Best video about rowing I found. Thanks mate!
We have the exact same rowing machine in our gym and I didn't even know the fan had a setting. Great video!
Seriously? lol. When I used the same machine at my gym and the first time I didn't noticed because I was just trying it out. But the second time I actually looked for the difficulty level.
@@vegarosa69 note to self ... thanks
I can't imagine that these Olympic athletes are dry heaving at the end. How hard are they going???
It’s pain in every muscle
During a race, it's anerobic activity, which creates lots of lactic acid.... It makes your muscles very very painful, and it is one of (if not THE most) intense workout you could ever do, period.
Yeah, I used to Row state level, one level before National & we often dry heaved and on occasion blew chunks...
Flat out, absolutely flat out.
I own a Concept 2 and this video is great promo for the product :). Glad I chose what I did.
Thanks 92 y/o pops caught your 1st ad earlier ...
I've been leaning way too far back, going to work on proper technique tomorrow
Very nice little video. I really enjoyed hearing from rowing athletes. I so wish I could get out on the water somewhere.
*Matt Miller is absolutely gorgeous!* 😜 *Thank you for giving us the best info I have seen yet on how to row correctly in under 5 minutes!* 😉
Everyone should watch this given the frankly appalling technique at my gym. The erg is by far the most misused piece of equipment there.
You ever heard of a squat rack pal

Well shit. That's a year and a half worth of rowing I've been doing like a complete fucktrumpet - starting with the 10 setting. Yeesh
look up drag factor as it relates to indoor rowing, and you'll learn quite a bit. 120ish for men and 110ish for women seems to be rule of thumb, but there's definitely room for personal preference
"Fucktrumpet". Good word.
Just getting into rowing and this is a great helpful vid. 👏
Thanks for the vid, well done!
Thanks for the video, I’ve always wanted to know how to row properly. I’ll try this at gym tomorrow.
Fuck what a revolution in training.
Tried a rowing machine for the first time today.
You people have helped a champion.
Thank you.
It's all fun and games until you enter the pain cave at 1,500 meters, then you're in hell trying to overcome your mind. Enjoy.
I see you know the 2k well
hihihihi.... True story! .. It's all downhill from there. Smiling and solid breathing turn into smudges.. :P
But it still is.. brilliant.
Dang I entered a 10k challenge at the gym lol I guess ima die there
I'm aroused
This video is gold. Thank you.
Please keep making videos like this!
Rowed on Lake Quinsigmond in Worcester, MA many years ago...Memories
I did the wrong machine at the gym the other night when I got home I felt like I wanted to pass out this machine is no joke
Thanks for the tips. I've had a concept 2 for years. I want to make sure I'm doing it right.
Would have liked to have heard the experts talk about a stroke rate. I have friends doing all the wrong things. Damper set to 10 and rowing at like 30 strokes per minute.
Stroke rate? As fast as possible
Answers to several important questions I had. Thanks!
This is so helpful and they have perfect form!
Their technique is horrendous. They high pull every sweep. That's awful technique.
Glad they took the time to give you this info. Good stuff!
Excellent video . Thank you!
We have an ERG because my sister is captain of the crew team at my school and my dad is in the navy an works out daily on it so Ima try it
Awesome! Just the video I was looking for! thank!!
This has to be the number one exercise in the world - bringing both your strength and your cardio to a 10!
Just bought WaterRower, can’t wait to start 😍
This is a really well done video thanks!
I remember when I used the rowing machine for the first time (and last time😂) I was going strooong, but oh my god for the next week I could barley walk and had to lift my legs with my arms
God always gets a capital G.
Geezess...that tall redhead! What an amazing specimen of Human engineering! Gohh...he's beautiful!
This is extremely helpful. Thanks very much.
I've watched a couple of videos over the last days. This one, I believe, is my favourite because it keeps it simple and to the point.
thanks!
This was really awesome, thanks for this!
I did rowing in Mantova and it's fantastic sport
I just started rowing today instead of doing weight lifting and cardio, I think two days of the week I will do some chest but for the most part, I’m going full on rowing from now until however long. I’m going to post videos of my journey. Literally just saw a guy today at the gym doing those curling rowing they said is a big no no haha I’m glad I didn’t copy.
Music!
Once your stroke gets established, find music with the same tempo as your rowing and your workouts will be great. Throw in a couple of quicker tracks followed by slower ones for HITT sessions.
Try this - each one repeat 5 times
Arms only
Arms and torso only
Legs only
Arms, torso and legs
Repeat in reverse order. Good technique and form is important when on a rowing machine.
Breathe in on recovery and catch, breathe out on drive and finish.
Great tips from great athletes. Thanks!
Just the video and info i need. Thank you.

NICE VID! - I grew up in Princeton watching all the crews on the lake .. and 45 yrs later > I have been learning to row in UK + it IS the COOLEST sport - hearing the tips fr these guys really xcllnt Thank you [as I work on an erg too] .. I have learned that there is a rowing machine out there that ALSO has OARS - the ends into the locks so its REALLY GRT practice - but I am not sure who makes this .. ..
Here in Budapest, there are 90 year old boat owners who regularly go rowing with their kielboats.
How to train for 5000m? i mean everytime i row i always row full speed trying to beat my time heheh but that cant be good and how you`re supposed to train for 5KM row?? I am well trained but it has beren long since i done conditon at this lvl at least cause its hard on on the lungs!!
how often can you try to break your PR?? and @ 20-22 rate what does that translate to every 500M like 2:10??
tanx for info you`re the first to explain good for new ppl i like that tanx in advanced!!

Great video. Very informative
This machine always caused me knee and lower back pain.
I'm glad i got this right. My instructor when i got inducted to my most recent gym even showed himself bending his legs and then moving his arms forward, i thought this looked wrong and inefficient as it's surely adding distance for your arms to cover in going up over you legs and then back down.
Another thing I've been doing wrong at the gym.
I feel you 😪
I live in this area. I used to watch them row all the time.
Thanks ALOT for this is bought a row machine ”not sure oftare techincal term” 1 month ago and have been doing maybe 10 sets now combined with other workouts and i have Been doing SO MUCH WRONG 😂
Home today and start doing it right ❤️👍
Great info. I’ll use on my rowing machine.
Good video.
The Aleuts used to out paddle anything the Russians could put on the water.)
I also wonder if the extremely narrow iqyaxs (I've built one) were even capable of solo paddling over long distances.
