- Phil Clapp becomes the first man to complete 500m on the rowing machine in under 1 minute and 10 seconds. He completed 500m in 1 minute 9.8 seconds. Peaking at around 1350 watts and holding on to that as much as as he could to take the world record on the rowing machine.

The only way Phil and I are comparable in terms of erg’ing is the way we drop off the rower, after going full send.
We can all relate to that one!
CONGRATS PHIL!!!
0:17 LET’S GOOOO!!!!
That some serious strength! I’m lucky if I can get into the high 20s for a few strokes.
Phil. 😍 As far as technique, this is a textbook example of how to put power into the erg. High rate leading to a shortened slide, high foot stretchers. Phil and I chatted a bit as I was learning to sprint and all of his advice was smack on. I'm really happy for him.
Foot stretchers are actually not high at all he’s just got size 16 shoes which makes it look high 😅
@@loicschalbetter387Of course Loïc knows this. I'd ask if you know my shoe size but I am scared of the answer. 😂
stopping sort seems to help Throw the upper body forward and help create a great plant to help rebound from, I've tried it myself.
Wow! That is something else… thanks for sharing Phil’s ergbending 👍
Animal! Doesn't even unstrap his feet before hitting the deck 😂 👏
Insane! Congratulations to Big Phil. 👏👏👏👏
Phil clapped that 500m dash🔥
That was very helpful to see how indoor rowing fast is done.
Like me trying to start the mower. 😂
Absolutely phenomenal.
Absolutely mental - Phil is at a different level to us mere mortals! 😎
This is unreal. I started about 6 weeks ago and am totally spent at a 1.35/500m. 45 year old lump. Cam your tutorials are the nuts!
We are all on our own journey 💪 enjoy yours!
LOL. 1:35 is very fast. How heavy are you?
@@edwardburroughs1489 18 stone ish.
@@michaelforrester816 That makes sense. I think you need to be a big dude to be pulling 1:35 so soon.
Crazy. And even crazier if you think of a boat going a similar speed to a 400m runner!
I watched this really tense and worried! I'm a layman, he looked good! Nice rhythm, proper technique, etc. Christ alive.
Incredible
Massive achievement. Mad that it takes him longer to recover than it does to do the 500m!
Absolutely thrilling, wonder what the splits were before the stiffness set in, probably around 1:07 mark
I think so! Crazy!
Thats an amazing time. Saw it on his Instagram. I have modified my technique after seeing his before. I guess he would get the shins more vertical on longer pieces. 🤷♂️
Potentially, not necessarily though!
well and truly yammed on it 🍠
So much yam
That is literally insane - I consider myself to be a sprinter and at 62 years old clocked 14.3 for the 100m (av pace 1:11.5/500m) and definitely saw a few strokes at 1:08/500m but to maintain that sort of power for 500m is incredible! It would be nice in these videos though to see the PM5 screen at the same time too to give some context...
Is definitely a savage effort! Has to be for a world record. More focus on doing the record than filming the record!
@@CameronBuchan Of course I get that, but he was videoing - so if you are taking the trouble to do that you may as well go all the way!!! On another note, whilst I love your content, often you also do the same - just my little bit of feedback, as an erg rower, it is seriously interesting to see the PM5 display when someone is rowing because its almost impossible to get a sense of the effort and power that someone is rowing at simply by watching them row! It is my biggest frustration with nearly all youtube videos of erg rowing - just watching someone row with no context on the pace and power being input is not as satisfying as it could be - otherwise though excellent and interesting content from you....!
@@philiplowery thank you! Same thing though, Phil is just filming to show what he is doing and to gain proof. Not to make a vlog and show people. It adds more than a trivial amount of effort which most of the time I sometimes don’t want to add when I’m doing a test. Definitely adds to the video. That want the goal for Phil though
Amazing 👏👏👏👏👍
Surprised how little of the slide he's using
Def not textbook form. Yet clearly very effective. Not sure how we are meant to reconcile that.
That's how you get max power. High rate, only using the strongest part of the stroke 👏
I’d say it’s pretty close to textbook form for those kind of splits. You’d be surprised the length of the strokes he’s actually taking
@@bazilbrushrocks nah its textbook when youre rating 45+ in a sprint. no one with a 500m below 1:15 or so is using anything close to full slide
Different goal, different approach. Normally, strokes are meant to be efficient: making sure you can do that powerfull stroke for over 6 minutes. As his piece is only meant to be a minute long, he can do things that would be inefficient but effective, as he probably is nearly done before muscle fatigue of the fast twitch muscles starts to set in.
Amazing! Simply Amazing!
What was Phil's rating and average length of pull?
Thanks.
Rate you can see on the screen at the end. Unfortunately the screen doesn’t show the length but I’d guess around 1.50
Would be interested to see him try row in a boat. Absolute monster splits from a monster man.
Wouldn’t be any issues since he used to be pretty good rower many moons ago!
Absolutely incredible! What drag factor does Phil use?
I don’t know the exact number off of the top of my head but you can see in the video it’s at around 8 or 9 so probably around 180 ish
@@CameronBuchan Thanks Cam - the /500 and power developed are insane! PS Your channel and its content are great - thank you - keep the videos coming!
Incredible upper body power
Legs probably alright too 😂
He is almost done 😢😂
Supreme effort! Assume drag was set at 10? 3/4 slide throughout with toes off foot plate at finish. Raw power and determination. Good move Cam to host this type of event on your site! Would like to see more + analysis.
Nope, couple of shots in the video you can see it’s lower than that.
An analysis could be interesting!!
Cam what did you add to this video? Was this a way to add to the exposure for Phil to get his WR more known by using your audience? I was waiting for some input or analysis
It’s a video of Phil doing 500m in world record time
Incredible accomplishment!! Could Phil go sub 1:09 with a couple of minor adjustments? I say yes but watching incredible power displayed like that is out of this world!! 💪🏻👊🏻💯
Probably not. Not many adjustment to make and .8 seconds is enormous. Biggest thing would literally just be fitter and stronger and that takes a lot of time. I think it was around 2 years for Phil to take off 0.7 seconds
@@CameronBuchan thanks for this video with your take on it. I really do appreciate your feedback. I’m constantly learning more from your expertise on the rowing erg.
Good to hear!
When I was 17 I touched 1:10 at the start of a 100m school competition, and definitely I was excited about it. Unfortunately I made a false start and at the second try I was slower. I've never seen that split anymore🤣
holy shit. terrifying
New to rowing, but have been playing with Concept 2 for a few weeks. What "level" do these guys row at? You know how the thing has a difficulty setting thing on the right side, from 1 - 10?
Welcome to rowing!
Phil was at a level 8 or so. Higher or lower doesn’t mean faster or slower. I’ve made a few video talking about resistance on the rowing machine that I’d recommend you check out!
@@CameronBuchan Thanks! Will absolutely check them out
@@CameronBuchan Just watched them, super informative. Basically, higher "resistance" doesn't mean faster times, because science.
Pretty much!
@@elibenaron it's bit like a gear on a bike but not quite. with improving technique you can hitvsame speeds with lower strokes per min and lower drag. in fact I think it was the best technique training for me - while of course otherwise focusing on the strokes.
I can hit the low 1.20s for a couple of strokes, but would be in the high 1.30s for a complete 500m.
Solid scores!
54 strokes ( I counted?) superhuman
Congrats, I could BeaT iT.
59 strokes
Im a rower in highschool, and people may not know just how how it is to get down to a 1:09 split. That just alone is insane! great job!
Crazy 🎉
@cameron - Im a novice at indoor rowing , I consistently hit 20 mins for 5,000metres after a 500m warmup
I row at resistance 9.5 lever .
Any general tips to break 20min barrier ?
My best time is 20.07 I believe
bring your fan setting between a 3 and 4. Drag factor at 115-125
@@samcaplan4646 thanks - I will and does this make my row harder ? Is 3-4 best to replicate on the water ?
@@Dominic712 It basically lets the fan run longer so that it mimics the run of a boat on the water. It will mean that you can rate a bit higher and still have a controlled recovery
@@samcaplan4646 cheers that explains it
@@Dominic7124-5 replicates water on a brand new rowing machine. If the machine gets dusty then you might need to increase it to 5-6
what was the old record?
his prior best?
I can’t remember specifically if his best was the previous world record. He did hold it previously but not sure if his previous was it! Was 1:10 point something
What resistance was it set at?
You can see in the video it is set to around 8 on the machine, roughly 180 drag factor
Incredible! What is Phil's PB for the 1000m?
I think around 240
@@CameronBuchan Solid. I love the fact that Eddie Hall's older brother (James) is the world record holder in the 1000m (2:39.3)
@@CarlFredrik-uo1cu yeah it’s interesting
First time trying I got 1:34 minutes. I’m 265 lbs and I do powerlifting. Was some good cardio. Might start doing it every time I go to the gym after my deadlifts
I wouldn’t do a flat out effort every time but sure a cool down or warm up on the machine would be good!
we are taught a seat and a way of rowing. However, if you look closely at all the records, take the time to watch them, they are executed almost behind the scenes. Moral of the story, row any way you want to perform !!!!!
1350? That's it? I hit 1350 cal....wait, did you say WATTS?!
what is that in cal/hr?
3152 calories per hour is 1:15 I think 1:10 is around 3700 ish
I got 55 seconds once but the rower was set to the wrong model 😂.
Damper setting?
You can see in the video it’s around 8 so approximately 180
Wow! What stroke rate?... oh, 47
I'm not sure he should try that without someone else in the gym!
at that rate he'd smash out a sub 5 2k
What's this guy's 2k?
I think around 6:50
@@wayne5741I assumed Cam must have meant 5:50, no?
Im j 13 my lowest split is 1:25
does concept 2 do drug testing for world records? no accusations of course im just wondering if someone could get on gear and have an unfair advantage, this goes for the longer distances too
Unfortunately not. Most people say there isn’t enough money in rowing for it to matter but I don’t agree!
1.14 I can get to in 3 seconds and hold for about 5 seconds and hold 1.16 up to 15 seconds, im in my 50's.
Nice!
I did 1.40 first try😁 (im a bodybuilder)
Good job! A lot of body builders do well on the shorter stuff like the 500s
@@CameronBuchan Thanks alot!
My fastest is 1:15 but I’m 160 and 16yo
Nice!
My fastest split is 1:06 and I weigh 74kg.
I was about to call bullshit then saw your name. There aren't many lightweights who can do that. 💪
@@eltgilmore 😂 💪
Nice work! Would be great to see it!
@@CameronBuchan my replies keep getting removed, not sure why. There are some examples on my channel.
@@tysonwhitt723 RUclips doesn’t like links maybe? Checked out your RUclips. Pretty fast stuff!
LET'S GO PHIL! 1:09.8 is outrageous for 500m. Sub 1:05 soon?😂
Why not?!?
Sub-1:05 will probably never happen, that requires 24% more watts than Phil's piece here. That would be equivalent to dropping the 2k record from 5:35 to 5:14.
@@coltonjohnston2927 Yes I know its impossible but I said it merely as a joke.
Not easy l know but if he was able to keep the chain straight on the recovery then he would be able to generate EVEN MORE power. Pulling on a wavy chain means some time and power is lost pulling out the wavy bits. Amazing row nonetheless and maximum respect fella.
Lost form towards the end, pretty poor effort tbh!
Seen me do 1:08 at 2 am in the gym
Yeah he should have really went much faster
Technique is awful
What would you change?
