Didn't know what to do, so I just went for the 10min. option. I am a beginner so I kinda tried to stay between 20 and 25spm, but the fool I am, I had to push a little. It wasn't that bad in the end, but I will be pushing some more after seeing this I guess...
absolutely amazing.....definitely learnt a few thing from your vid. i'll try to slide less toward the foot pad during the last 500 meters to see if i could pick up the stroke speed
how can your heart rate be so low? I had a 1,5k this weekend, and my hr went up to 185 in the first 30 seconds and then slowly approached 200...youre a monster xD
He does use a pretty large negative split, so that helps keep the HR a bit lower earlier on, jumping that high that early might mean the start is too hard though. I'm guessing this isn't quite 100% either, he seems to max at 185 or so, which for a 200max really should have a touch left in the tank.
Just curious about your thoughts on how much you shorten your stroke at the end. Although the rate gets pushed up quite high which lets you get your splits down for a short period, do you think that there might be merit in keeping it longer and letting your legs still take the majority of the drive through the end of the piece at a lower rate and using the "final kick" energy to ultimately push it even lower? Or do you think that the trade off of drive length for higher rate is ultimately of greater value? I wonder because on the water you often see the crews that stay long seem to maintain greater speed. I am not saying your way is wrong, because I know that ergs and rowing are different beasts to an extent, rather I am just curious if you have tried both ways and found one to be more effective at getting the faster score. By the way, that is a GREAT score... you are beast mode!
I think you answered your own question really. The rate goes high and split goes down for a short period. The short period being the main part. When the rate gets pushed higher and higher, the split drops down and I can't hold those for long! I also can't hold full length in the high 30s for long.... Yet! So yes I think, for me right now, the tradeoff is worth it

Really curious what sort of training you do or have done inorder to improve your Cardiovascular endurance. Its what I fell I need to work on most especially with the spring season coming up and I was curious if you had any tips.

Thank you! As you see in the video and the last 2k I've been testing them out! Making sure the yamsqaud get an awesome aio. The aim is to get them to me next week and to you ASAP!!
Late to the party - very awesome informative vid! Can I ask your height and weight? 6'8? and Adidas Olympic lifting shoes? Do you wear those purposeful or just for a rigid shoe? I've seen others do the 2k ERG in socks, I can't imagine that being effective or comfortable...thx thx
Hey, just intrigued with the technique at higher rates, you seem to not go to full slide, more like 1/4 or 1/2 sometimes, do you find that helps conserve energy ?
Do you ever do a piece without looking at the split? Best 2k I ever pulled was when the split was taped over. Without that split telling me how bad I should feel I was just racing against my fear of doing "worse" and found I had more than I had been accessing. Taught me just how mental it really can be. Maybe it's only effective once, but I'd be curious to know how common it is to do better when you don't know your status within the piece.
In his book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", Pirsig describes how Phaedrus, whilst teaching creative and technical writing at a college in Montana, did a little experiment where he withheld assignment grades from his students during the term so they had no idea how well or poorly they were doing. The results were much the same as what you described with your rowing. That is, by the end of the term, those students were going to pass did so with far better scores than they would have had they known what their grades were. At the end of the term, Phaedrus asked them how they found this system and their response was that, once they got used to it, they became more interested in the subject matter. Another quote from them was: "A lot of us got together outside of class to try to figure out how to beat this system. Everyone decided the best way was just to figure you were going to fail and then go ahead and do what you could anyway. Then you start to relax. Otherwise you go out of your mind!"
technical comment and question......comment first...technically, you're a beast!!...awesome job.....and re: the technical question, how are y'all getting both the erg data and heart rate info to be overlayed on your main video feed?.....would luv to do that for my own training vids...
After listening to the music you addedto build up the tension st the start of the row, I was hoping for an anti-climax where you fall of the rowing machine :-) Great effort though!!!
im not sure if theres a reason, but he was taking almost just arms and body strokes at the end, and overall his sequencing seemed not too good, but he still did amazingly..
I was sprinting towards the end which usually makes people shorten up. Sequencing could need some work but not super necessary on the erg unless doing something really inefficient

It wasn't that bad in the end, but I will be pushing some more after seeing this I guess...
When I am doing a test I go too fast so i lose all of my energy on begining and then you are like chill😎
absolutely amazing.....definitely learnt a few thing from your vid. i'll try to slide less toward the foot pad during the last 500 meters to see if i could pick up the stroke speed
Cant stand to see so much rowing and still at the same place... Benches... MOOVE!
I'm not sure what you mean! 😂
@@CameronBuchan Rowing machines are the evil shells! Just me being silly. Good luck at Paris!

Please give us a 500 TEST! 💪🏻💪🏻
Are tips really exist? That pace and power because you are a beast.
I’m a sophomore in high school with a personal best of 8:20, and idk how you did that😂

Awesome! Good luck!

That's it
probably like 2500
how can your heart rate be so low? I had a 1,5k this weekend, and my hr went up to 185 in the first 30 seconds and then slowly approached 200...youre a monster xD
My max is 200!! Working on trying to hold it there!! #yamsquad
@Frank Astier perhaps one day! 😂
He does use a pretty large negative split, so that helps keep the HR a bit lower earlier on, jumping that high that early might mean the start is too hard though.
I'm guessing this isn't quite 100% either, he seems to max at 185 or so, which for a 200max really should have a touch left in the tank.
Same dude
Damn Cam has thighs bigger than my waist
Amazing. It takes me about 18 minutes to do 2km.
That Air Pod adjustment @6:36 is a big flex
Just wasn't playing ball
Excellent piece of work! Would be great to see your power/wattage as well!
There's a split to watts converter on the concept2 website if you're curious for this video!
Your content is top notch Cam!
Thanks Graham! #yamsquad
Yet! So yes I think, for me right now, the tradeoff is worth it
Did my PR last december, a very nice 6:35.3. Was at the national indoor event (nkir) as a lightweight with a mere 74kg.
Congrats!! #yamsquad
This was really interesting to hear you talk through your game plan!, with the stats too!
They say a change is as a rest, pleased that mixing it up seems to be working for ya! I'm agreeing with Mr Boggins thoughts, there is a lot of very poor content out there😴getting more views!??? The title pulls you in! Once you get them in Cam they will be along for the yamsquad ride!
P.s been working on my erg training, wearing an AIO instead of standard gym gear seems to make make me more focused! Any thoughts on any new spring/summer Merch collection? Couldn't work out if I could still order a AIO? love the orange blue and white, maybe add some ladies cut training vests! visors, head bands etc..just a thought, know your a bit busy😂
Hi Abbey! Thanks a lot and you're right!! #yamsquad regarding AIOs I know exactly what you mean!! I want to get some more things in the shop just like you mentioned and perhaps a more consistent AIO for sale too!
Minerva Bath. Yeah yamsquad.
Awww yyeeaaahhh
@cameron can you talk about the breathing patterns and also the best type of breathing pattern in your opinion..thank you cheers

To think that's not actually how fast he could've gone because of having to touch the screen in that second 500
Good sign for Paris! #yamsquad
Motivated BY YOU

Let's go!! Congratulations!
All rowing coaches in the world has the same clothing style :D
I need that Coach yelling at me...just in everday life....gives me chills everytime...."23's CAMMMMM!!!"
Thank you for the tips! They suit me
I noticed your heel didnt raise off the erg at the catch, why is this? I'm an U15 novice whos not very good at ergs but is trying to get better so i want to know if this will help me?
I’m very tall and not lifting my heels was an experiment at this time. I am still rowing relatively long here which could be different for you
Great idea how it was presented THANK YOU! I'm brand new to my Concept 2 and rowing finding motivation everywhere through the rowing/erging community (just in time for the "stay home quarantine" ) What about "How Far I'll Go" made that the right song for your effort?
Thanks for watching! Good timing indeed! Just a song I like, wasn't quite the original either!
Fantastic effort!
Thanks for sharing.
What Drag Factor were you using?
This one was 135! I meant to say it in the video!
@@CameronBuchan Thanks Cam. The reason I ask is because I noticed JDS 2km Erg = 5:38.6 was at 120 Drag. I have been experimenting with very low drags and having much better results.
Just food for thought.

Instead of pressing the "display" button repeatedly. You can press the buttons in the row to the right to get directly to the desired view!
You're right but I wasn't trying to change the screen I was changing units!
@@CameronBuchan You lost at least 1 sec to do that process! So u have 5,53 already there ;)
@@pelleakesson2993 good news for the next one then!!
Really curious what sort of training you do or have done inorder to improve your Cardiovascular endurance. I'm a highschool rower and I excel at steady state pieces but I really struggle with high rate pieces(really anything over a thirty). Its what I fell I need to work on most especially with the spring season coming up and I was curious if you had any tips.
wow! Im lucky to hang on to a 1:26 for 1 minute
Like a boss. Fantastic.
I know the vids a bit old but boy that was impressive. 33 average for 1st 1000 then step it up to 39 for last 1000. I have to ask which no setting do you row at ? I also noticed you would'nt have blown out a candle when you were finished that in itself is truly amazing. Thanks for sharing
Hi David! Yeah maybe time for a newer episode! I think it was a little bit lower experimenting on this 2k, around 3-4.
Mad erg Cam, congrats. Any updates on the Yamsquad AIO's?
Thank you! As you see in the video and the last 2k I've been testing them out! Making sure the yamsqaud get an awesome aio. The aim is to get them to me next week and to you ASAP!!
@@CameronBuchan Got to put them through their paces!! Can't wait to get mine and keep yamming on it here in Australia. Cheers

It definitely does help use less energy, feel a lot more in the lungs, as my leg strength was my weakness! #yamsquad
My record is 7:12, but trust me, it is taft.
Nice workout, compliments 💪
Just turned 14 and just got a 151 2k split?
Is this any good?
Do you ever do a piece without looking at the split? Best 2k I ever pulled was when the split was taped over. Without that split telling me how bad I should feel I was just racing against my fear of doing "worse" and found I had more than I had been accessing. Taught me just how mental it really can be. Maybe it's only effective once, but I'd be curious to know how common it is to do better when you don't know your status within the piece.
I haven't actually done this before but I actually really want to. At the very least it would be an interesting experience!!
Another quote from them was:
"A lot of us got together outside of class to try to figure out how to beat this system.
I use a combination of an app called ergdata, my heart rate watch and Adobe after effects!
Hi Cameron, have just stumbled upon you're videos. very impressive and insightful. wondering what damper setting you have when doing the erg test?
Hi Paul. I'm pretty sure the pinned comment explains for you!
I've been trying to suss out optimum rowing technique... Is yours spot on? Or is this adapted for the sprint?
I wouldn't say mine is optimum, there is things I can improve on like engaging legs more on the drive
@@CameronBuchan Ye ofc! no hate at all you're incredible i just noticed that. I like keeping my erg technique good so it carries through to water training but ig it dosent rlly matter.
