    DRAG FACTOR/RESISTANCE used on this workout.
    I set the drag factor to 125. Around a 3-4 on this machine. Resistance does NOT equal faster or slower speeds. I've made a few videos discussing drag factor which I recommended checking out. Here is one: ruclips.net/video/_ZbxsslM6NQ/видео.html
    If you have any other questions let me know!

      Thanks for the info. I've achieved 7:55 for a 2K on drag factor 10. I weighed 75KG at the time. In your opinion is this a good effort? Thanks.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  2 года назад +2

      @@stevenc6492 like I've said in the video linked in the comment. The drag factor won't really make you slower or faster.
      If you went hard and felt tired that's a good score 👍 hard question to ask specifically not knowing anything else!

    Just curious about your thoughts on how much you shorten your stroke at the end. Although the rate gets pushed up quite high which lets you get your splits down for a short period, do you think that there might be merit in keeping it longer and letting your legs still take the majority of the drive through the end of the piece at a lower rate and using the "final kick" energy to ultimately push it even lower? Or do you think that the trade off of drive length for higher rate is ultimately of greater value? I wonder because on the water you often see the crews that stay long seem to maintain greater speed. I am not saying your way is wrong, because I know that ergs and rowing are different beasts to an extent, rather I am just curious if you have tried both ways and found one to be more effective at getting the faster score. By the way, that is a GREAT score... you are beast mode!

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 года назад +2

      I think you answered your own question really. The rate goes high and split goes down for a short period. The short period being the main part. When the rate gets pushed higher and higher, the split drops down and I can't hold those for long! I also can't hold full length in the high 30s for long.... Yet! So yes I think, for me right now, the tradeoff is worth it

    Great idea how it was presented THANK YOU! I'm brand new to my Concept 2 and rowing finding motivation everywhere through the rowing/erging community (just in time for the "stay home quarantine" ) What about "How Far I'll Go" made that the right song for your effort?

    Do you ever do a piece without looking at the split? Best 2k I ever pulled was when the split was taped over. Without that split telling me how bad I should feel I was just racing against my fear of doing "worse" and found I had more than I had been accessing. Taught me just how mental it really can be. Maybe it's only effective once, but I'd be curious to know how common it is to do better when you don't know your status within the piece.

      In his book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", Pirsig describes how Phaedrus, whilst teaching creative and technical writing at a college in Montana, did a little experiment where he withheld assignment grades from his students during the term so they had no idea how well or poorly they were doing. The results were much the same as what you described with your rowing. That is, by the end of the term, those students were going to pass did so with far better scores than they would have had they known what their grades were. At the end of the term, Phaedrus asked them how they found this system and their response was that, once they got used to it, they became more interested in the subject matter. Another quote from them was:
      "A lot of us got together outside of class to try to figure out how to beat this system. Everyone decided the best way was just to figure you were going to fail and then go ahead and do what you could anyway. Then you start to relax. Otherwise you go out of your mind!"

    Hi, Cameron - amazing performance. I only row on Erg and mostly long distances. My pb is 6:56 - what is your recommendation of the setting for the resistance? I set it to 10 but I have no idea what the norm is.

    • @danielkurlander466
      @danielkurlander466 4 года назад +1

      I always have it set at 4-5 because it best simulates the resistance of water.

    Seeing everyone replying on your heart rate while I am thinking: "how tall are you?" your stroke length is regularly up the 1.50 with hardly moving your legs. That's a lot of meters on 200 strokes if I compare it to my 1.30 ish stroke length. What settings is the concept on?

  • @IGenius2013
    @IGenius2013 4 года назад +4

    What part of a 2k do you find the hardest? The lack of oxygen? The burning in the legs? I’d imagine for you it’d be the lactate in the legs but it’s still interesting to see.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 года назад +3

      I think the worst part of the 2k is post 2k. When I have done my PBs I'm out of it for an hour at least and feel horrible for the rest of the day!

    Would it help to catch with hands higher? It looks like your chain is on a different angle to your arms at the catch.
    I've been on people at the local club for it; the starting slack seems to lead to arm bend.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  Год назад

      Yeah the starting slack is a cause of the arm bend. Raising the hands does help combat that but ends up in an unnatural position. Maybe not for all but just an unfortunate result of the machine not being very adjustable

    How did you just go sub 6 and you’re barely out of breath? I’ve been rowing for 5 years and I just can’t comprehend that. How’d the higher rate compare to the lower rate because I have a 2k test coming up.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  Год назад +1

      I wasn't really barely out of breath. It was pretty tough. Could have went faster but not by too much as demonstrated by next few 2ks.
      I had been working on training the higher rate and adjusted my technique to work better with the higher rate so it was helping me. That doesn't mean it will work for you though.

      Something I'm working on. The arm bend isn't so much a bend to pull as apposed a bend to engage.

    Hey, just intrigued with the technique at higher rates, you seem to not go to full slide, more like 1/4 or 1/2 sometimes, do you find that helps conserve energy ?

    • @CameronBuchan

    What kind of damper settings is better to row a 2k ? Usually I use a 5.5 but I'm lower than 140 drag factor, it's about 125, 130 for a PB 7:15" I wish to reach sub-7. Very inspiring your vidéos, thank you so much

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 года назад +1

      On every erg a 5 or a 6 is different depending on how they've been maintained. I have been messing with drag factor over the passed few weeks and have settled right now on around 130. You can get sub 7! #yamsquad
