(S5 Ep92) Now I remember why I *STOPPED* fishing from this kayak

- Sometimes the grass isn't greener on the other side. Today I was reminded why I stopped fishing from my old Hobie Outback. The Texas Coastal Marshes are very shallow and require a platform that can get skinny. I'm not saying the Outback can't put you on the fish but I am saying there's better kayaks that make the same task easier.

Mark, I notice that you take the time to address each and every comment! You DESERVE the Patreon support that helps you have those 'extras' needed for your near daily fishing exploits! I find that watching you is SO RELAXING because of your kind, gentle spirit, and and non-rushed mannerisms. The kindness, and serene attitude you always display, even during the excitement of landing the largest fish, reminds me of a gentle Brother-monk, working in a monastery. You are a very SPECIAL individual that I so admire!!! My problem is that I have been "Italian" for way too long! LOL!
Thanks for this supportive comment!!!
Now you know if Mark actually washed his kayak after the trip it really means he's done with it for the year. 😩😂
😂 bro now I know what you’re going through 😅
I was personally shocked 😲
Not really the kayaks fault that you took it into 3 inches of water…..outback is probably the best most versatile fishing kayak on the market
The auto pilot is definitely the way to go. I have mine on a regular trailer but I am 58 years old. I can back mine into a very shallow area and push it off easily. I love your videos.
The AP is good till it leaves you stranded miles from launch. I had to paddle my ap120 and it's not fun. I no longer own a AP.
Why do you have all the Hobie logos taped off?
I’ll explain in a future live Q&A
love this boat easy to move, very stable , comfortable after 2 hours of fishing
What's the deal with the taped up Hobie logos? Is Old Town the only one sponsoring you?
Old Town gave the channel the Autopilot. I’m not sponsored by a kayak company.
…..but you’re trying to connect the dots in hopes of an old town sponsorship?
We use a very light Watersnake trolling motor for the 6"-12" water. Anything less than 6" is walking time....
Very nice video. Makes me wish I was there. Keep on!
Hey Mark
Have you fished the marsh behind the train tracks at bayou vista? If so Is that area any good for fishing? As soon as you cross under the train bridge the marsh is on the right.
Thanks for any intel you might have available.
Very pressured area, it’s where I learned how to fish the marsh.
Agreed .. the best hands free fishing platform out there right now …
Completely agree
You are so much fun to watch, Mark!! I feel like I am sitting in the back seat enjoying your fishing exploits! You are simply the very BEST'EST!! LOL!
Thanks for the support 🙏
I recently acquired a PA14 360. It’s heavy and big, but oh so stable. I’ve only been out three times, and I’m still learning how to control it in the wind, but I’m loving it. Great video Mark. I have to fish deeper now.
The Cadillac of pedal drives, nice choice 👍.
Wow! That redfish took you for a helluva ride. What a beauty.🙂
Great video. Quick question, what wall rack are you using to store your kayaks at the end of the video and what did you use on the support bars for padding? Thanks again.
Boonedox rack comes with simple pool noodle like padding.
Thanks
Listen, I have a vanhunks shad pedal drive yak (you can use fin or prop) ... Most people have never heard of it but I'm telling you it's the most stable yak on the market and it's 1700 (I got a floor model for 1200) I can stand and fish in wind, chop and boat wakes like it's nothing !!! It looks like a baby autopilot... The 10.4 size is absolutely perfect for inshore fishing, it turns on a dime, it's water tight and can also take offshore trips easily... People need to really look into this yak if they are in the market... You won't be sorry
👍
As always great video
What kind of stake out pole are you using? It kind of looks like it's just a hiking stick.
I would have thought you could paddle or push-pole through that skinny water? What kayak would have made it through 4 inches of water without "towing"?
It's easier with the Autopilot 120
Lol...I used to go wade fishing in the land cut in knee deep water, trudging through the mud and water...hundreds of yards away from our boat....countless times...we eventually evolved to drift fishing using a drift sock to slow us...covered way more ground that way and also weren't exhausted from wade fishing....
😂 as long as it works 💪
Also, I’m just getting into inshore marsh fishing in Galveston and appreciate the commentary. Do you have advice on what to look for when considering places to kayak fish to in the marsh? Like what’s a “lake” you mention when I look at marsh .
I have a Patreon that will help you out.
Mark I'm trying to decide between a PA12 with and xi3 or an OT Autopilot. Have you been in an instance where you had to paddle the AP and if so how did it do?
It really sucks bad. I had to full rudder right and only paddled on the right. All kayaks 34 inches and wider are horrible to paddle, just my opinion.
So you prefer to go with the Old Town kayak with a autopilot trolling motor
Yes, just a better fishing experience.
That papaya looks so good in this video. I have seagrass. Maybe made the wrong color choice
What are your thoughts on marine matt for kayaks? Do you think it will help with the sound?
I'm sure it does.
Great content as always, sir. Thanks for all the info and entertainment.
My pleasure!
Hey Mark I am trying to get into fishing with artificial lures what is a good size weighted hook to fish the Brazos River by the 36 bridge in Freeport Texas
@anthony seymore O know you asked Mark and not me, but if I may say a couple things...
There's going to be several variables in that question.
What depth?
Water movement?
What type of artificial bait?
More depth, more water movement, more buoyant or a bottom bait I ise more weight.
I pre rig several of the same lures Ill be using. Additionally, ill take extra jigs and weighted hooks. I will always have weightless swimhooks, 1/16, 1/18, and 1/4. Ill also have a few 3/8 in the tackle box just in case .
Hey Mark, I’m in the market for an Old Town Salty. Especially after watching your review on it. However, I can’t seem to find one. Do you have any recommendations for dealers in the Houston/Galveston area? Or maybe somebody that can order it? I’ve checked everywhere I know to look but no results.
I can’t in good conscience recommend the Houston dealer because of customer service.
I always make the drive to Dallas for Mariner Sails.
you really think the AP120 drafts shallower than the OB? I am deciding between my next yak to go along side the OB. I am torn between PA14 with ix3 trolling motor or the AP120. Seems I may just get the AP120 since it will be cheaper.
If I were you I’d definitely go with the auto pilot I just purchased a 2022 outback I love it I didn’t get the auto for the simple fact I want and need the workout
The pontoon style body makes it perfect for sliding across the mud 👍
I'm looking at purchasing a Yak this weekend. I'm leaning towards the Hobie Pro Angler 12? It is a little pricier than other models (Outback etc). Are there any negatives some one can point out for me. BTW...I've never been on a kayak before. 6'2" Thanks in advance.
That’s a great kayak 👍
If you got the ability to test them you should test the pro angler and outback and see which you like. The pro is super heavy but crazy stable, whereas an outback is less stable but significantly lighter. I I'm about 6' and 190 lbs and I can walk pretty much everywhere on the kayak, though. So it all depends on your feel for it.
I’ve had 12’PA for about 3 years, great kayak, and have buddies who have the outback. Both are great yaks, Outback lighter, faster, a little longer, but less stable, the PA heavier, more stable, but a beast. If price and weight is not issue I would pick the PA. At the time I purchased mine I tested a few , Jackson, Old Town, and choose Hobie. Many newer Makes and models since. I can tell you Hobie is a reputable company. My friend who had outback had issue and Hobie after 1 yr. And Hobie replace the hull. Good luck!
Good video Mark. Loved watching the tow ride with that Redfish. Nothing like it!
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
I'm also curious why tape the name ?? And it's not really the boats fault that you went out in low tide. Just my 2 cents. Love the content otherwise
I started wearing similar shoes. I went with the inexpensive Magellans, but same idea. Im actually really impressed with them over the last year and prefer having them on.
👍
Yeah evey thing the hobie fails in the ss127 excels and everything the ss127 fails the hobie picks up. To fix that problem I went with the ss with a trolling motor. If I'm going far I slap on the trolling motor. Also if you tie a rope to the front of your yak to loop around your body it's alot easier to walk it.
So true, there’s no such thing as the perfect kayak.
Why do cast with your right hand and also reel with your right hand?
Cause I enjoy doing it this way 🤙
@@MDLRFishing at least you know exactly what I’m taking about. Enjoy fishing.
Where did you get your kayak wall mount? Looks great and simple to put up :)
Amazon
Mark sure looks like you're glad to be back in a Hobie?
Did you watch the end?
For a quick moment 👍
Great video! What net are you using?
Frabill kayak net
Maybe a shallow trolling motor?
Looking forward to a catch and cook, I know you have some good things planned.
👍
Hi, what Kayak is that? Looks like lots of storage
Once you have gotten used to a stable platform you can't go back. Yes those kayaks are heavier but there's ways around that like a small trailer. I fish out of a titan with trolling motor
For sure
Did you make the Kayak storage rack? Please let me know what you used! It’s the perfect solution I’ve been searching for!
Kayak Rack - amzn.to/3rYyCmX
Thanks a ton Mark! It’s expensive, but I guess you get what ya pay for! Got it ordered!
Nice Bull Red fight 💪 your commentary on the autopilot with was a good analysis. Wish I could afford one of those babies.
I hope Old Town makes some changes when they update it 👍
When the first bird is heard on the video, I had to laugh! I heard a Willet. We used to joke that it was called a Willet because they are so numerous you Willet to be something else.
😂😂😂 some of them are the most annoying 😂
The outback is more for river fishing. The PA are a lot more stable for larger water.
👍
Got a Texas Power Paddle Marlin Rudder, 4.5 mph, and makes turning great for my Outback, do not find it wobbly but then depends on your center fo gravity and water motion of course. Not as wide as your Auto Pilot or a Pro Angler for sure.
I need to look this up 👍
That sweet! Be cool if Mark could test one of these out..
Here's a short clip of an install:
ruclips.net/video/Yn65BIluW_8/видео.html
Fantastic video and camera angle, Mark! Sometimes I wish I had an Autopilot instead of the Solo Skiff. Can't wait to get out there once the winds calm down.
Thanks, I was hoping y’all would enjoy the camera view.
Which seat do you think Is more comfortable, hobie or old town?
After over two years of use in both, I prefer the Autopilot seat. The frame is a little fuller to accommodate the body. I also find that I don’t have to re-situate myself every few minutes or so.
@@MDLRFishing thanks 🤙🏾
do you use those jigs made from bunny fur anymore?
Yes
I didnt know the outback would not float over super skinny. My jackson cuda does fine but some days i will trade a paddle for a peddle. Nice ride from that over slot red
For me it needs about 4 to 5 inches of water to effectively push over mud. The design of the AP allows me to glide over 3 to 4 inches.
Really enjoyed this video!
Awesome, thank you!
I let my fishing buddies try my old town 106, much more stable then others fishing yaks on the market, they love it also.
👍 very stable, heavy but stable
Yeah, but the hobie is good for the excise..Getting the heart rate up is a good thing..Auto pilot is good for gaining weight around the belt line... 🤷♂️😆
😂👍 get my reps in on them bigs 🎣💪
If you get a autopilot kayak which one will you go for
The 120
Tried design a mud shoe after a snow shoe but suction problem. Then found a products called MUDDER BOOts. Looks like that works.
👍
Like the overhead angle much better. Good job 👍🏻
🤙
Looked like that big bull red was going to pull your kayak to Corpus Christi, lol.
😂😂😂🎣
Mark when you get one of those bull headed ones like that change direction of pull about every five seconds keep rod tip as low as possible and you can whip those big mothers no problem. Not trying to be a know it all but my thing has always been big fish on light tackle and I’ve landed some monsters. Examples 54 lb cobia 10 lb test ml action rod ,26lb steelhead 3x 8lb tippet,16lb brown trout 6x tippet approx 2.6 lb 3wt rod. Just saying. Would love to fish with you sometime.
Thanks 👍
I like my Hobie I get to fish and get a work out at the same time but yeah it dose suck in the wind
That’s what I also like about the pedal drives.
LOL... just when I was about to drop $4K on an Outback! Timely video. Maybe just go for the Cadillac PA14 with the 360? More of a photographer. Seat and stabilty are most important to me or I would have gone Compass. Lazy fisherman. Crappie with a brim buster, catfish anchored up. Maybe some flounder.
Go with the outback you will not be disappointed. Best fishing kayak hands down
Man that Red was a beast..nice footage 🤘🏿🤘🏿🤙🏿
Thanks 🙏
Where did you get those storage racks?
Amazon
Kayak Rack - amzn.to/3rYyCmX
Damn what a ride!
That walk in the mud looks exhausting just to watch 🤢😵😵💫
😂 a smelly walk 👍
Which wall mount rack do you use?
I think it’s linked in my video description 👍
@@MDLRFishing Thanks. I had looked first but still don't see it.
Kayak Rack - amzn.to/3rYyCmX
Really enjoyed watching you land that big fish. I thought you might loose him watching your pole being bent over as it was. I am in the NorthEast on East end of Long Island where the fishing is fantastic. Mostly Salt water... Bass, Blues, Weakfish, Flounder, Fluke. I try and use a smaller rig just for the action and hope I don't hook a monster Bass 20 or 30 LBS. which would not end well ..for me that is ....LOL
Check this one out. These tiny rods are AMAZING!
ruclips.net/video/P9bnrny9nxM/видео.html
I really like my Hobie Outback except it has the old style seat and Ive put on a little weight and now the seat back straps rub me raw when using the mirage drive , and I think its plenty stable . I got a Pelican catch 100 just to grab and go and I only grabbed it once in two and a half years , it is way unstable compared to the Hobie . Sadly I dont use either one anymore much just lost interest happens as life changes and ya get older , anyhow great video and nice catch .
Hopefully you get back out there soon 👍
Kayaks are to narrow when you need or want to stand up especially when fishing
Clearly this scumbag is sponsored by old town. Duct tape the hobie logo and keep the OLd town and proceed to bash hobie and promote the autopilot. I have the autopilot and its a pain in the ass, defeats the purpose and simplicity of kayak fishing. Went back to my outback. Scumbag move tho man
Awesome video brother
Thanks 🙏
All fun & games with all the bells and whistles till you got pull all that heavy crap thru 4” of water and 3’ of soul sucking mud 😂😂😂😂
😂🙌
Should look into the lynx for shallow marsh area
I don’t think the shell would stand up to the oyster.
@@MDLRFishing Ah yes I forgot about those oyster beds.
Mannnn what a ride!!!
🤙 pulling hard 🎣
still willing to crawl thru the mud to complete the mission!
Brother you got a sleigh ride with that big ole red.
🎣🛶
Sure wish we had those up here in the northeast.
🤙
Info on those pants and hoodie please ?
It’s my Simms Flyweight rain gear.
Bad ass that fish pulled him all over lol
I got a Marlin Rudder From Texas Power Paddle
Not a pedal version. Paddle maybe but not likely. I am sure you can give away your disappointing kayak .
Buen video excelente trabajo hermano saludos desde Houston

What about your predator pdl?
It wasn’t good for the marsh so I sold it.
