- During the 1980s and ’90s, John McTiernan was the biggest director of the era. Not only did he direct everyone’s favorite Christmas movie of all time, 1988’s Die Hard, but he also made the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic Predator, the first (and best) Jack Ryan film, The Hunt for Red October, and Last Action Hero, which a lot of people hate but is a cult classic around these parts.
His career continued going strong in the nineties, with Die Hard With A Vengeance and The Thomas Crown Affair. Still, bad experiences of The 13th Warrior and Rollerball led to a cooling period. Even worse, he wound up in jail due to a long, convoluted story which we dig into here. So will McTiernan ever make a comeback? Join us on WTF Happened to John McTiernan, written by Taylor James Johnson & Brad Hamerly, and narrated, produced and edited by Taylor James Johnson.

I really, really miss this guy. "Die Hard", "Predator" and "Hunt for Red October" are all exceptional movies. "The 13th Warrior" is the definition of underrated.
Even his Thomas Thomas Crowne Affair was an exceptional movie

Thank God John mctiernan is one of the greats and no one ever talks about him. 13th warrior criminally underrated.
The 13th Warrior is an amazing movie, I really dont understand why it's underrated as everyone who watches it seems to like it? Just needs more hype please.
I love that movie.
Thank you! Mctiernan is my favorite action director
Oooooh! I loved the 13th Warrior! Imo, it was like a retelling of the Beowulf epic minus all the fantasy.
I know Michael Chrichton wrote the novel the film was based on, but I think the film was better and really came off to me as Beowulf in real life, lol
But I digress, the movie was just awesome! I still have the DVD on my bookshelf 🙂
Love this movie and music
McTeirnan's fundamental command of the medium is nearly unmatched. _Predator_ could be taught in film schools. One of the most undercelebrated directors in cinema history.
That's panned as a shit film actually.
@@jackybogues2495There will always be critics. But there was nothing like it. Still enjoyable today by legions.
Hope he makes a comeback one day. The world could do with the McTiernan touch. An excellent film maker. Still hoping to see his version of The 13th Warrior some day. Underrated film.
Pedos seem to have better chance at making comebacks in Hollywood. I think Sly should've offered one of the Expandables to direct , would've been a great return for him.
Bet you like Avatar more than 13th Warrior as your favorite going native/tribal genre flick, don't ya?
Bet ya liked Thomas Crown Affair more than Titanic, don't ya?
Bet ya liked True Lies more than Last Action Hero, didn't ya?
Bet ya liked The Abyss more than Red October, didn't ya?
Wuss.
It wont be possible, since he's a former felon he cant get bonded to ever do a studio film or major production.
@@eskanda3434 Is that what the problem is?
@@allenfernandez8352 Titanic were overrated on release and still is. The 1958 version is way better and more realistic.
Avatar 1 were overrated too with it's cliche story. Cameron's best movies is Aliens, True Lies, The Abyss and Terminator.
The best action movie director of all time. He made Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger into icons and he should get WAY more attention.
Arnold was already his way up because of James Cameron and John Milius.
@@DougUnfunny yeah, arnie was already established with conan and terminator when predator came out
James Cameron will always be the best. But yeah. Even McTiernans Thomas Crowne Affair easily rivals the original
Richard fleischer directed trapped 1949 starring John Hoyt lioyd bridges
James Cameron made Schwarzenegger into an icon....I like Predator and all but he has way more iconic films than Predator.
This man is just one of the best director of all time in terms of ACTION movies along with James Cameron & Michael mann, even 13th warrior was decent, Thomas crown affair was an entertaining and enjoyable fun remake and even Basic was so horrible, the rest of his filmography is legendary.....so many iconic, memorable, rewatchable classics. He need absolutely to make a comeback....maybe another Die hard or Predator movie

How can any movie fan not like the double-surprise ending? 😎
I'm so glad you described this as a "lightning in a bottle" and one of the best movies of all time. A lot of people don't understand how hard it is to make this type of movie and make it epic. 99.9% of theses action flicks try and fail and of the rest, only very few are among the greatest in any genre. Time period has to be right to capture the attitude of the era, cast has to be right, dialogue has to be right, script has to be right, director has to be right and luck has to be on their side. It's so much harder to create a "Predator" than to create any "Godfather" or "Sound of Music". For drama, you can go almost all the way with awesome cast and well written dialogue + expensive production. But for action it doesn't matter how much money you throw into a movie if the magic isn't there.
Honestly, the plots for Predator and Die Hard should not have worked. Especially Predator. They should have been, at most, B-Movies. Heck, I think the first Die Hard adaptation (not counting the source novel) was for it to just be a Commando sequel. Granted, we've seen a WHOLE lotta copies fail over the years, but you're right. It was a perfect storm. Kind of like the original Ghostbusters.
It would be awesome when you write an essay to inform the readers WHAT THE FUCK YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT!!!! he's discussed over a handful of films here!
John McTiernan is one of the kings of action films along with James Cameron and Paul Verhoeven!
Served a prison sentence for lying to the FBI about hiring a shady private detective to spy on his producers... over Rollerball.
I already considered John McTiernan to be awesome because of his movies, but that makes him a bonafide LEGEND in my book.
McTiernan and Jan de Bont made Die Hard and Red October beautiful to just watch.
I watched Red October for the 100th time the other day and just focused on de Bont's
lighting. So damn good. Robert Richardson,Dean Cundey and Roger Deakins are my modern day
favorites and I wish de Bont would have stuck to Cinematography.
"Nomads" has an excellent performance by Pierce Brosnan and was a decent underrated 80s thriller
Yeah'
I gotta check it out. Never heard of it.

Did you know that Jim Carrey was originally supposed to play Conan the barbarian and the predator design was based off Whoopi Goldberg and the terminator was originally ment to be played by Danny Devito. And did you know that The predator was delayed due to a herpie breakout ON SET! TRUE STORIES!
I wish I could be John McTiernan in the sense of making all these iconic works and can still go out unnoticed on the streets.
"The 13th Warrior" is a damn-fine film, and a very good adaptation. I think, considering everything working against it, the finished product is a triumph. Glad to see the love for that film keep spreading.
The one thing that I don't think got stressed out enough is that McTiernan was accused of lying to the FBI OVER THE PHONE. What happened was some guy called him one evening, said he was an FBI agent and inquired if he knew the PI they were investigating at that time: McTiernan said "No" and hung up. Anyone could've been on the other end of the line. He should've probably told the guy that, if he really was an FBI agent, he should've come and ask those questions in person, but, still, it's insane that someone can go to jail for something like that. As for the wire-tapping, I am pretty sure it is still standard procedure in Hollywood, given how much nobody trusts anyone over there and all the blackmailing that goes on behind the scenes - McTiernan was just very unlucky when it came to choose the man for the job.
Are you in hollywood??? What movies were you involved in?? And I'd love to hear about the blackmailing you've witnessed mathew
Meanwhile all the sex offenders roam free in Hollywood. That's fucked up.
One of the greatest directors ever. This legal move against him is a shame, a FBI stunt against one of the last Hollywood mavericks. I hope he'll make some more of his always carefully crafted highly enjoyable flicks.
"The last action hero", damn that was good!
for Predator alone he is a legend
And Diehard
Predator is a good film but I wouldn't say it's great. Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October were superior.
@@ricardocantoral7672 why choose at all? all three are top-notch
Predator he think is stupid movie because can make money for studio but Die Hard are not the same but after his work he think he love to work Thomas Crown Affair remake.
This is a really good episode to do! One of the greatest directors in the action genre.
McTiernan was one of the best, his two Die Hard's are fantastic and I would love to see him do another...
Die Hard, Predator, Hunt for Red October will always be legendary films.
The world needs John McTiernan now more than ever!
Predator..Die Hard..The Hunt for Red October and Die Hard With a Vengeance are obviously all iconic action blockbusters, yet most people cannot name the director of them.
Really happy you talk of director instead of actor!
Die hard 3 is by far my favorite, it was the first one I watched so that's probably the biggest reason, but just how broken John is at the beginning and his hangover makes it so good.
It was great but come on. The original die hard was the GREATEST ACTION FILM EVER... I actually thought die harder and die hard 4 were a little better
I remember seeing Last Action Hero in the movie theater and loving it! What a film maker!
Yes, it was very funny....and some great action sequences . I think the "Critics" were just waiting to take Arnold down a peg or two...
Thomas Crown Affair is a really underrated remake.. Hope they produce his sequel.
"He was born on his birthday"? Wow! 😄
There are ONLY TWO Die Hard movies.
Die Hard and it’s direct sequel, Die Hard: With a Vengeance.
I’m very glad no one ruined this great two-part series with any other films.
Die Hard 2 has problems but it isn't as bad as the last one.
Predator, Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, Die Hard with a Vengeance, The Thomas Crown Affair -- I've seen each of them at least a half-dozen times.
John McTiernan was an exceptional director, greater than rest of the talents on his sets combined !
I wish McTiernan would have done a Bond film. Fabulous director. The Thomas Crown Affair remake is fantastic too.
I never understood the hate towards The 13th Warrior. It became one of my favorites after I first saw it around a year after its release. It has great pacing, a good structure, wonderful atmosphere, and great acting. My favorite aspect is how much the myths and spirituality of the Northmen shape how they see the world. For them, their view of reality as an extension of the world of spirits is just as valid as Ahmad ibn Fadlan's logical deconstruction of the world after the Greek and Arabic philosophical traditions. Yet, they don't shun him, but welcome his unorthodox insights to help defeat their enemies. Ahmad, in turn, begins to embrace the ways of the Northmen, becoming a real warrior and gaining the respect of his new friends.
I enjoyed the hell out of that movie. It was a nice capper to the summer 1999, a good old school R rated action movie.
@@JnEricsonx My only issue with that film is Antonio Banderas was not the center of the action, or story. I wish there were more one on one sword fights with cooler choreography, and maybe flush the story out better. But it's a cool edition to the barbarian genre.
@@rmjmoviereviews6876 Well, remember they had to re-do a bunch of the movie, that MIchael Critchton himself directed. Me, I love the film, I still wish Dennis Stohori-Herger, had gotten some US offers, because he was GREAT.
My #1 favorite action film director out there, *_Die Hard_* and *_Last Action Hero_* are my ultimate favorites from him. I would love to see McTiernan make a comeback with a huge action film, maybe even for the final _Die Hard_ movie.
It’s never been seen, but apparently cast and crew members who worked on the film said his original cut for 13th Warrior was better than the finished movie. The finished movie is Michael Crichton’s cut
I have heard that too.
In my opinion the top 3 action filmmakers of all time:
James Cameron
Tony Scott
John McTiernan
Solid list!! My top 3 are John Woo, James Cameron and John McTiernan.
Richard Donner also
One of my favorite film makers, who made the best two action movies ever, Predator and Die Hard, held in high regard by the people who know about movies, and never underrated
The original Robocop and Terminator deserve respect too. You owe them a huge apology. I will not leave untill you apologize to them... RIGHT NOW
So many awesome movies, loved Hunt For Red October.
John McTiernan = movie genius
I’m sure McTiernan still has a couple of great movies in him and I really hope we will get to see them! Until then, #ReleaseTheMcTiernanCut of Eaters of The Dead!
When I think of the meta Arnold action movies, I think Last Action Hero aged better than True Lies. I Loved it then, I love it now.
But True lies is really more fun and awesome than Last action hero.
Both last action hero and true lies are awesome Arnold movies.
A great director and a great artist with great movies
What happened to him? Well he made three of the best action movies of my/our time, which is more than enough to be rated as an awesome movie director.
What a nice little tribute at the end... Great video guys!
John McTiernan and Walter Hill have both been responsible for the greatest films ever made but neither are given the respect or recognition they deserve. WHY???
He's 70 now. Insurance companies are reluctant to insure a film with a 70 year old director. Robert Wise was 65 when he did Star Trek The Motion Picture and he didn't direct another film for ten years, and that was the low budget film Rooftops.
Age plus it wont be possible, since he's a former felon he cant get bonded to ever do a studio film or major production.
McTiernan work is niche market.
Ok, he make some BIG game changer but TASTE of mass product are change. We cannot make the same formular. McT say in interview why he decline to directed Die Hard 2 base on SPEED 2 script but make With A Vengeance .
Wtf does age have to do with directing. Eastwood is 110 years old and still directing. STOP IT! GO EAT A DORITO
If you were known for illegally wiretapping a producer, someone you worked with, then it's safe to say you might not get work with anyone anytime soon.
@@mttylerdurden9 luckily he had contact from europe from france to mske movie like mad max style (ghost in the machine) but tau ceti foxtrot pause project because amercan filmproducer reject while covid19 come first wave.
Thank you so much for this, I was wondering what his story was, and I like the idea that McTiernan HIMSELF may be counted as a Last Action Hero. (I do get a sense that Paul Verhoeven wound up stealing some of the thunder which might have gone to McTiernan. By the way, I like the fact that the Ashley Judd protagonist in the thriller Kiss the Girls is named Kate McTiernan.)
When Mctiernan stopped making films, which is right after Basic I believe, Verhoven was already finished as a Hollywood blockbuster director and went back to make Black Book in his homeland.
What does Ashley Judd being named Kate Mctiernan in a NON action film NOT directed by John Mctiernan have to do with anything. Lol
@@robogreek3157 I'm interested in names and what becomes of them, so sue me.
Been waiting for this. Please do more directors
last action hero has always been one my favourite movies when i saw it as a kid in the late 90s in vhs. its so unique and well made. it didnt do amazingly when it came out and its only in the last few years people started talking about it more and call it a hidden gem. what happened that people rediscovered it? arnie is fucking hilarious in last action hero.
I love Last Action Hero. I loved it back in the day and still love it now. It baffles me how poorly understood it was at the time and its fourth wall breaking, trope acknowledging meta humour is kind of par for the course these days but was so different then I think it broke peoples brains and made them mistake it for a bad movie.
I thought it was underrated too but it did not break brains. Because of the satiric humor in 1987 RoboCop. I think people like Medicine Man... went in with the wrong expectations which I blame on marketing. Think about the game LAST OF US 2... as a fan of the original I HATED THAT STORY but if they marketed it correctly rather than just trying to get my money... I still would not of liked it but I would of respected the gameplay and things the game did correctly... same thing with 3 of Mctiernans work
Literally just yesterday I thought about that I should look up John McTiernan to see where his legal issues are currently. Thanks for reading my mind!
I'd love to see a new McTiernan film, the problem is movie making has changed so much in the interim that I'm not sure he could adapt to it. Also, whatever happened to Dean Cundey?
Dean Cundey still works as a cinematographer, he just doesn't do high-profile projects anymore like he did in the 80s and 90s.
@@thermonuclearcollider4418 why?
@@kowalski5599 no idea - either he doesn’t want to be bothered with big projects now that he is in his 70s or he’s not very high on the list of Hollywood producers anymore. He’s still an ASC member, so he retains some prestige but it should also be noticed he was never a “star DP” outside of certain circles. Which doesn’t mean that he’s no good, just that other people are perceived as more prestigious.
why would a real director adapt to the shitty film making standards of today?
@@mtaylor2232 Dean Cundey is not a director (although he did direct one movie or two): he's a cinematographer (aka director of photography aka lighting cameraman).
Love Mctiernan’s films. Wish he could make more.
I wish he had directed the Conan The Barbarian remake.
His recent commentary for Last Action Hero was one of the saddest thing I’ve ever listened to.
Do you have the link?
His commentary for Predator was awful too. He sounded so bored.
So glad you said Die Hard is a Christmas classic, because you're 100% right
Last Action Hero was and is one of my favourite movies. I totally got the meta joke and also loved the dig at the serious art critics when Sir Ian McClellan reprised his role as Death in the classic Seventh Seal
Last Action Hero is a freakin masterpiece!
7:07 'Well , hold my beer!" 😆🤣😂
I liked his Travolta-starred Basic, a lot! An underrated movie as well.
McTiernan proves that you can have exciting action, without lots of choppy editing and chaotic camera movement.
You already saw that with directors like Spielberg & Cameron. Even earlier than that guys like Don Siegel as well.
Great filmmaker, I hope we haven't seen the last of him.
I remember really enjoying The Thirteenth Warrior
Imagine Tiernan was given the chance to X-MEN going from the 60 to the 70s or a New Mutants franchise of three movies from the 80s to the 90s.
Such a big fan. I hope he gets to make another film.
I’m fairness SOMEONE needed to go to jail over “Rollerball”…
Why not arrest the people who forced it into a pg13 watered down film?
I would be interested to see the McTiernan Cut of 13th Warrior, but I thought the film we got was pretty good.
"Eaters of the Dead" sounds like the title of horror B-movie so I think the title change was a good call.
I forgot how much my world spiraled out o control since I'd seen last action in the theater.
Amazing looking back, luckily I stopped the 25+ year curse before it destroyed me too.
Thirteenth Warrior is one of my favorite Antonio Banderas movies. Last Action Hero is great. Die Hard, what can you say.
1:32 same compilment every director gets: "He visualizes the film and gets it." Translation: he gets what he wants because the actors choose to give it to him.
Netflix should give him a feature film to do!!
Well what i just watched was 1/3 of the movies i grew up with. I loved every movie exept RollerBall.
The last photo of him with Bruce Willis broke my hart.
I love your videos but I also love the music you add. I’ve been wanting to ask this for the last few videos now but I really need to ask. What is the name of that song that you use at the beginning of 17:50?
He directed literally the two best action movies ever made. Not debatable
One of my favorite directors next to Micheal Mann ...these two guys made some of best movies of the 80s and 90s ..and I liked Basic ..sue me lol
Hey man, I loved the 13th warrior!
He's one of the greatest action film directors within the past 50 years in Hollywood. It's a shame that he doesn't get recognition that he deserves. In Hollywood, all it takes is to make a couple of or a few box bombs to ruin a great career. He's still a great director in my opinion.
Mad props to Spielberg and Scorsese for still going strong in Hollywood, because it ain't easy.
Most people love Spielberg or Scorsese Or Noland
I read interview he not make movie because he look like betrayed in project like Last action hero , 13th Warriorsor Basics
I absolutely love Last Action Hero!!! I watched it when I was 13 and I was blown away by the idea of traveling between movie worlds and living forever.
I'd be totally down for Crown affair 2. That movie is one my favorites in that genre
19:40 The titles on his shelf are largely French, including the volumes of Trafic -- a premiere film journal co-founded by Cahiers du Cinema alumnus Serge Daney. I'd be curious to know when McTiernan learned French and also how these readings have impacted his understanding of film.
McTiernan and Paul Verhoeven are still my favorite action directors of all time.
I want this director back to direct Predator prequel to ignore upcoming predator prequel Prey.
I went about four of the movies. I remember looking for those Sony Minidiscs around the time Last Action Hero came out. never did find any. :)
Nice, always liked him for those movies mentioned..
I wish there were more directs like him.
If action films got the respect they deserve, the motion picture academy would've nominated McTiernan for directing "Diehard," the most influential American action flick of the last 35 years.
I adored Last Action Hero as a kid. It was like it was made just for me.
This is always so fun to watch
I remember the dollar theater getting a whole $10 from me when Last Action Hero was playing at the cineplex for a month or two. The movie is so ahead of its time and has one of the best soundtracks ever made!!! The best song on the soundtrack isn't even in Last Action Hero, it's in "JACK SLATER IV", Angry Again by Megadeth.
die hard 3 literally played on cable this afternoon.
You can totally see Lethal Weapon in Die Hard 3
He is the only one that can make a good Predator sequel!
Not true, predators was very good.
Oh man. Don’t talk to any cops without your lawyer, especially the Feds. He didn’t really do the more serious crimes but hindering an investigation, I can understand why there’s stuff penalties for that
Last Action Hero is so underrated

Even if he never directs another hit he's still responsible for some of the greatest action films of all time. He helped define a generation of action films. Also, Die Hard with a Vengeance is a close second in that series.
2:56 Hey, that’s not Hans Gruber!
So many great films. The 13th Warrior was awesome so was Last Action Hero.
That's right: Die Hard IS a Christmas film.
I will never not love _The 13th Warrior_ ... the scene in which Banderas "learns" their language by slowly having it change, have certain words be understandable, before he then fully knows it, and so do we... is actually a masterpiece that everybody now lazily side-steps by subtitles
