It was great special effects wise, but so forgettable (Josh Brolin and Kim Dickens have major roles in this movie?!?!). I think there just wasn't enough Verhoeven world building. IMHO if the military pressuring the scientists and their motives was amped up, this could have been up there with The Thing and The Abyss (which could be done with existing footage and editing new scenes in as the original cast would not be needed to add... idk... maybe some scene of the Joint Chiefs deciding on how ethical this research is or if the POTUS should even be informed). I always thought that Starship Troopers was filmed from the viewpoint of a commercial ("would you like to know more?") and that all that is shown, including the acting, was filmed in a way to sell a product (the war). Even the main characters are cast like the beautiful people you see in commercials. Rico and Carmen look literally like sculpted Ken and Barbie dolls.

This man shaped my childhood. I played with my Robocop action figure in the back of my familys 82 Buick Skyhawk. Sparked my love for all science fiction and creativity.
I love PV's Starship Troopers as a satire and fun action movie, but it bugs me that the book (which he avoided reading) often gets lumped in with it. All the context that explains peoples rights and how the government works is thrown out in the movie, so people end up saying the book is pro-fascist without reading it.
Nah, they read it. Maybe they're oversimplifying, but you just can't take Heinlein's word for it. Calling out the fascist elements of the book long predates the movie. The world of the book doesn't superficially resemble what we think of as fascism. It's what more of what a very naive and peculiarly egalitarian fascist thinks fascism would look like, that is: not much like real world fascism. The book is a fantasy. Instead of getting the society in the book, someone trying to build that society would get the real life version of a totalitarian, militaristic, hypernationalist state. And with no bug-monsters from space to offload the tribalism on to, you'd probably find it very difficult to avoid the racist and sexist elements that always seem to get mixed in with that sort of thing. Heinlein *wasn't* looking at the reality of fascist states and saying "That seems good. That is how we should live." but he *was* voicing agreement with some pretty fascist ideas about how human society and psychology work.
@@paulsmart4672 There weren't even any Fascist states when the book came out. Everything was Democracy or Communism. Allied against Fascism and it shows.

Robocop is PERFECT. I love Robocop so much.
In a perfect world, Paul Veerhoven would've directed one of the Expendables movies. And James Cameron and John McTiernan would've directed the other 2.
Simon West is way better than Michael Bay, except, monetarily.
In a perfect world Paul Verhoeven would've handled the Terminator sequels.
I still think Hollow man wasnt horrible and bad like many people says, it was ok
I mean how often do you see a breast get felt up by an invisible hand?
It was... fine. Forgettable, but fine. It is just that just fine doesn't cut it when you are Verhoeven.
Hollow man was no masterpiece but it wasn't as bad as people say it was. Compared to half the crap they make today it was pretty good.
The casting was a bit off for me too as KB and ES were associated with more coming of age and light hearted movies at the time, but that's more of a Me Problem; [their] performances were good. Anyway, that's me commenting my comments in the comments.
It was a great movie
Do a “WTF happened to John McTiernan”. That one should be interesting enough.
Especially when you get to why he’s practically banished from the scene. Spying on someone you work with and other shady dealings aren’t gonna make you look good even with stellar prior works

Really wish he got to make the Crusades film with Arnold Schwarzenegger!
More than conan 3
that sounds god awful........Nothing sounds good about a movie about the crusades starring a guy from Austria with a thick Austrian accent.
We got "Kingdom of Heaven" from Ridley Scott, that's good enough.

I remember we bought tickets for another movie and snuck into robocop and just being blown away. His use of the media, and even commercials as exposition and world building has never been matched. I did not know he was up for Empire director. That gives me chills just thinking about that.
I was about 12 years old
you gotta love how many people use the term "misogynistic" against people for featuring nude women in films. how exactly does using naked women in films mean he is prejudiced against women? huge groups of "organizations" have weaponized definition to better suit their narrative. war of semantics. NOT having ANY women in your film because you think they are just ALL bad actors is misogynistic. and loved the documentary, you did a great job.
after making Starship Troopers you don’t really need to continue , you’ve already won the game. Awesome director
The man really had an acumen for dark satirical films with “Robocop” & “Starship Troopers”. His Dutch films are also pretty good and Verhoeven has been thriving since returning to Europe for his work. It’s hard to keep momentum going in the studio system
Awesome.
He came to America, gave America what it wanted, in ways it didn't expected, then left like a cowboy with no name. Good guy
A real-life Marshall Will Kane? (He came, he gave the people what they demanded, and after failing to have his back by them he left without looking back)
Pretty good..? Soldier of Orange is a masterpiece, Black Book is great, and older, very good ones like Spetters really touch your soul & hit hard as you become older; Theres so much more to Paul Verhoeven's work that you dont see initially....
Black Book was such an amazing... I saw it when it came out, and there are some parts of it that have stuck with me to this day.
The hair bleaching scene for one (and not for the nudity) as well as the ending.
When PV is really on point, he is memorable, Robocop, Total Recall, Black Book
Showgirls: I'd buy that for a dollar!
🔥🤣
You would be overpaying
I love Showgirls
Absolutely trash jaja
Total Recall Is One Of My Absolute Favorite Movies.
Same. That kind of fictional world you just want to dive in to get more of it.... a series, a sequel, a video game, it doesn't matter, the setting deserves more.
Open your mind.
Brilliant film

Just several stratospheres ahead of the directors of today.
And I'd forgotten how mesmerising Rutger Hauer was.
This guys movies were special, they had a certain feel to them no one else can do, Starship troopers has to be one of the most underrated movies ever mostly because it's so misunderstood. It's a shame Showgirls killed his reputation and we didn't get to see any more sci fi classics from him, I know he had to have another gem left in him.
Just realized Paul Verhoeven is my favorite director, made all the movies i love the most as a kid i loved the violence, gore and nudity, as an adult i appreciated them as a commentary on contemporary culture.
It's sad people didnt realize his genius until now
Now? Get real

Back in the day before Blizzard Entertainment could do no wrong and I was a StarCraft junkie I would give favorably comparisons with Starship Trooper’s bugs race and StarCraft’s evil Zerg insect race. Good times. Wish those days could return. I also believe the folks at Blizzard credited Verhoeven in inspiring StarCraft.
I do hope he does one more Hollywood film so he finally gets the credit he deserves. One of my favourite directors by far!
He gets enough credit where it counts. He is getting also more than enough love and respect outside of America.
Just take a look at the comment section, filled with positivety about him and the movies
Out of all the directors who have an iconic style to their work, Paul's is right up there with Tarantino and a few others for taking the most risks in the right ways where the payoffs feel so satisfying!

LMAO you're right about the barbie doll thing. That crossed my mind before, but not with those words 😂🤣
Agreed, transparent enough as propaganda, but invigorating and amusing enough that we're drawn into it and we see how we can be mobilised by it. It's a pity more people didn't take that to heart.
It's more an idealized world of good and bad if you ask me.
it was a very different beast than the novel, which was a political commentary purely.... the film shares the title and some basic ideas, but is a completely different animal.. not bad, simply different. Cheers!
Startship troopers was absolute gold. Please please make another one.
Can you do Terry Gilliam next he needs it BADLY.

Love Robocop. And I enjoy part 2 as well.
His Dutch films are great. Turkish Delight, Soldier of Orange, Zwartboek (Black Book), The 4th Man, and yes, Spetters are all fantastic. Not enough of his fans have delved into his Dutch work!
I agree! All of his Dutch films original titles are in Dutch language (not just Zwartboek). The original titles of the movies you mention are: Turks Fruit, Soldaat van Oranje, Zwartboek, De Vierde Man, Spetters.
@@hansolo2121Yes, of course. I opted for the English titles so the recommendation would be easily digestible. When I saw Zwartboek in the theater it had its Dutch title, which is why I probably kept that one as it was intended.

_Starship Troopers_ is a dense, immaculate critique on the American empire, nationalism, & the military industrial complex.

It’s so sad he had to live through the bombings of The Netherlands as a boy. His parents were almost killed in one bombing, I couldn’t imagine that horror when I was a kid growing up in Louisiana.
The ww2 kids I talked to were more terrified of being separated from their parents than anything. Most have said it was quite exciting
Belgium has Jean claud Van Dammen. The Netherlands has Paul Verhoeven and Rutger Hauer.
Belgium has the best Dutch language television shows. Tabula Rasa, Beau Séjour, Undercover, to name a few.
Total Recall was awesome. It was action packed, funny, futuristic, and weird.
Starship Troopers is one of the best, visceral, Sci Fi masterpieces that blows away most of the competition in so many areas, under the guise of "just hard core blood n guts movie", you have to watch it several times, to catch everything he does.

They should do a video on her!
Sir David lean wins a Oscar for best director in Lawrence of Arabia
Is Fascism even bad when Democracy is happening right now?
@@paulsmart4672 There weren't even any Fascist states when the book came out. Everything was Democracy or Communism. Allied against Fascism and it shows.

Anyone else think the narrator of this series of videos is trying too hard? The vids are well produced, have good information, and are overall well made. But using 10+ different modulations to his voice makes him tedious to listen to, as if he doesn't believe the content and script are interesting enough on their own. Maybe it's just me, but I wanted to at least throw my two cents into the void of the comments section
Everyone wants them to change the narrator

I think a discussion of Paul Verhœven should start with Floris (1969),also starring Rutger Hauer.
