WTF Happened to Die Hard?

- One word that comes to mind when you hear the title Die Hard is “definitive.” After all, it’s widely considered star Bruce Willis’ definitive role. Still, it’s also, arguably, the definitive action movie and even the definitive Christmas movie by some (in a debate that’s grown a bit tiresome). Indeed, Bruce Willis as John McClane, fighting terrorists in the Nakatomi skyscraper in Los Angeles, is a defining image of the eighties. Director John McTiernan, writers Steven E. De Souza and Jeb Stuart, and star Bruce Willis crafted a carnage-filled epic grounded by a very human hero - John McClane, who was a notable departure from the icons of the genre at the time, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. McClane was no superman. Instead, he was human, flawed and broken-hearted over his failed marriage. His only goal was to rescue his estranged wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) and get home for Christmas with his kids.
As iconic of a hero Willis is, Alan Rickman’s Hans Gruber is just as iconic a villain, with his sharp Brooks Brothers suits and haughty demeanour mixed with gallows humour. Plus, there’s Alexander Godunov as a hulking henchman, the Michael Kamen score, and so much more that helped make the movie become a classic. However, it was anything but smooth sailing to the big screen, with Willis not the first choice to play McClane and many scoffing at the idea that the TV star best known for Moonlighting could handle an action movie. And despite its reputation as a Christmas movie, Die Hard came out in the summer of 1988 and was more of a sleeper hit than an immediate blockbuster. However, it became so influential it inspired a legion of clones. We’ll tell you all about Die Hard’s rocky road to the big screen in this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, which is written by Eric Walkuski, narrated by Dave Davis, edited by Ric Solomon and produced by Ben Cantler.

I like how this movie had a vulnerable and more grounded hero, who got injured and wasn't ripped, since it makes the character more realistic
Agreed, McClane isn't invincible, he's an ordinary guy who got caught in a rough situation, which makes it all the more realistic.
No question
So true in sequels kept turning into a super hero “Die Hard Man”
@@trinaq ABSOLUTELY 💯 👌
@@OMARA.OFFICIAL he was pretty banged up in 2 and 3...4 was super mclane. he jumped off a fighter jet like nothing.
I will miss seeing Bruce Willis in films, but I hope that he continues to fight against his aphasia. He'll always be my favourite action hero.
I'm glad I won't anymore. He is not really an actor, just a guy with a "bruce willis" face
@@anjayl I will miss seeing the Bruce Willis that we used to know from movies. How about that?
I will miss Bruce Willis too. He’ll always be the best action hero along with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kurt Russell, Jean Claude Van Damme, dolph lundgren, Michael Keaton, etc.
Let's not forget how every similar movie was compared to this great movie.... Die Hard on a battleship, Die Hard on a train, Die Hard on a bus, Die Hard on a plane, Die Hard in a hockey arena, etc.
And this year, Die Hard, but it's Santa.
@@admiralhowdy dont forget Die hard BUT on another planet and LOTS of water
Forgot Die Hard in a phone booth.
Die Hard at a Tech Company layoff
I still maintain that "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie, since not only does it explicitly take place at Christmas, but has themes of forgiveness, family and reconciliation.
I also think it's a Christmas film, even though it came out in the summer, similar to how Lethal Weapon is a Christmas movie but it came out in the spring
And features a LOT of Christmas music.
Great Point.
It legitimately is a Christmas movie...Because it is a Christmas movie. Just because it's an action movie doesn't change that.
Christmas in hollis, christmas trees, ho ho ho written in red on a stiff, john's wife's name is literally holly, etc. It's christmas enough
Die Hard came out the summer before my senior year of HS. I can remember seeing the ads on TV and thinking they were crazy for putting David Addison (Bruce's character in Moonlighting) as the star in an action movie. I went with some friends to see it opening weekend and I was blown away. It's still my all time favorite movie.
Cool! I was just 7 years old when it came out so I was too little to watch it on the big screen. But man did I make up for it on the VHS! I must have watched it hundreds of times!
I still love it to this day and watch it with about 5 years apart.
I'll tell you what happend to it. It's one of the best examples of what a near-perfectly executed action film is supposed to be.
I still watch the 3rd one the most, something about that era of 1995 stuck with me all these years.
My 2nd favourite behind the original.
I mean, Bruce and Sam Jackson were a great combo
OMG, do I have stories about this one. My writing partner was head security guard at Fox and my friend, bodybuilder Kay Baxter trained Cybil Shepard on the set of "Moonlighting" so we saw Bruce Wilis graduate from TV star to film star. I not only watched them shoot scenes from the film at Fox Plaza in Century City but, as an employee of Merrill Lynch in Beverly Hills, I sometimes had to work in offices located at the same building. There's more, including a fight between my employers and Fox for how they shot the moment the "terrorists" entered the fascility, but I'm saving it for my book. LOL. Merry Christmas.
Your book is shitty I bet and you seem like you probably have bad breath
Alan Rickman was very Suave as Hans Gruber. To think this was his first movie; as well as the first of many villain roles.
John McTiernan was on a role, as he made Predator a year before this movie, and then made Hunt For Red October after Die Hard
In July 1990, Hunt For Red October actually put me to sleep in the cinema on a saturday night.
Yes, and he say he almost got fired from direct Die Hard because someone in studio think he can't direct action sequence.
He also did Die hard 3, Last Action hero & Thomas Crown Affair. He was excellent in his prime like Michael Mann, Tony Scott, John Woo, George Miller or Richard Donner
So weird Bruce was filming this movie the same year he won an Emmy for Moonlighting. My favorite dramedy of the late 80s. Also, RIP Alan 🙏
I can agree with you on 'Moonlighting' during 1985 and '86, but it really ran off the rails in 1987 (not Willis' fault) and should have been cancelled at that time instead of 1989. The dialogue (in the beginning) was so cleverly and well written, I thought at the time it couldn't be maintained, and unfortunately was right. It stopped being a detective series and just became a sad show of Willis and this other guy bar hopping, drowning their sorrows. Cybill's personal life problems didn't help either!
The two details you left out of the synopsis from the novel, probably because they're kind of brutal, is that the daughter character was an accomplice to the terrorists/thieves, & after her death & discovering the truth, the protagonist hunts down & executes all the remaining bad guys in cold blood.
yeouch... that's brutal indeed
@@fredlaroche6969
There's one more difference, but it's relatively minor. In the novel, the daughter buys herself the expensive watch from the money the terrorists/thieves paid her off with. That's how the protagonist discovers her involvement. In the movie, it's implied but not flat out stated that Ellis the Coke aficionado was primarily responsible for Holly being gifted the watch.
One of th best action films ever, one of the best heroes ever and one of the best villains in the late great Alan Rickman.
The fact that he didn't hit it big until he was 41 makes me feel somewhat less apprehensive about my just turning 41 myself :D
I was blessed to be working as an usher at the Cineplex Odeon Spectrum Cinema on Augusta drive in Houston.
We were showing "Die Hard"
for one week before all the other movie theaters in the city of Houston.
It was in 70mm and four of the seven theaters that were showing it where THX theaters
you didn't get sick of watching it over and over back then?
I remember at the time....when the movie came out and it was Bruce Willis. I was thinking...how good could this be...Bruce Willis from Moonlighting?!?? ... Ended up being one of my favorite movies of all time that I keep a copy on my phone at all times.
One of Rickman's best roles ever. He was a hell of an actor and is missed.
I always say it with great pride, I have a talent for recognizing when a movie is going to be epic, and this was one of my first successes.
Die Hard is one of those very rare movies that’s essentially perfect from start to finish. What a happy accident :)
"Ladies and Gentlemeeeeen".......Hans Gruber. RIP Alan Rickman.
You will be witness
It is ironic that Die Hard which created the template for all action movies that followed in the 1990’s was originally itself given the pitch of Rambo in a building as Sylvester Stallone hot of Rambo First Blood Part 2 was at one point in consideration for the movie. Also Mel Gibson was at one point up for the John McClane role while Bruce Willis was up for Martin Riggs. Can you imagine what these action franchises would look like if the roles had been reversed like this.
It would have been nice to see Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford since they had done this type of role before with their well known iconic characters but Bruce Willis made this film.
This movie is also known for giving actors and actresses higher salaries, since Bruce Willis wasn't well known and got $5 million for Die Hard
One of the best action movie's ever made Hans gruber one of the best movie villains and John McClain what makes him a great character you see his vulnerable side he's having problems with his wife you see him get beat shoot and he keeps on coming he won't quit
Watching Die Hard 1 & 2 is always fun, especially during the Christmas time. Still better than most action movies today. Classic.
Great video. And thank you for all those unforgettable moments at the movies, mr. Willis.
My Favourite Action Movie of all time. And IT IS A CHRISTMAS MOVIE!
Without Alan Rickman's casting in Die Hard we might not have him as Snape in Harry Potter
For anyone that likes Die Hard. I highly recommend the classic western High Noon, from 1952, starring the great Hollywood Legend Gary Cooper(in his second Oscar-winning role as Marshal Will Kane). High Noon is the movie that Hans Gruber(Alan Rickman) references to John McClane(Bruce Willis) before the final shootout of the film because the overall plot of Die Hard, even down to the ending, mirror the plot of High Noon to a large extent(it's basically a modern-day take on the plot), with the concept of One Man taking on a group of Outlaws. John McClane knows this and tells Hans Gruber that's it's Gary Cooper that he's thinking of. They can even be good companion movies telling similar stories of Men defying the odds in the face of danger.
High Noon is well worth watching and is one the greatest Hollywood Golden Age Films ever made, whose influence can easily be felt in Die Hard as well. If Die Hard is one of your favorites, give High Noon a chance too, you'll like it.
I was always partial to Roy Rogers actually. I really liked those sequined shirts.
@@Guerrilla_Grodd Ha-Ha, yup, it's really cool that the signature Yippe-Ki-Yay in Die Hard comes from John McClane(and Bruce Willis in real life too) being a fan of Western Movie Star, Roy Rogers. Specifically, in the 1943 Western, King Of The Cowboys, Roy Rogers sings the song, "I'm an Old Cowhand," which is where the Yippe-Ki-Yay reference in Die Hard comes from. Also, when John McClane says "Happy Trails, Hans" after the final shootout, that's a reference to Roy Rogers signature song, "Happy Trails" which Roy first sang in the 1951 Western movie, Spoilers Of The Plains. Both are fun movies and some of Roy Rogers best.
The fk that happened was, that it turned out to be the best Christmas movie of all time.
I first saw this at school, last afternoon before the Christmas holiday, as there was school, but teachers knew nobody would be in the right frame of mind to learn anything.
Great sound quality this time around 💪🏻
it IS a christmas movie indeed !
This was an awesome video, it was edited so well.
A True Masterpiece! And Now A True Christmas Movie !! 😊😁👍👍🍁♈
One of my all time favorites and it still holds up! I also love that RunDMC's Christmas in Hollis got some play. This movie has so much!
I love Frank Sinatra response to that question
I just remember hearing back in the day probably in the movie documentary that they filmed on the floors of the Fox building that weren't compleated yet.. imagine working on one of those floors in this building and telling yourself every morning when coming in "my desk/office is right where they shot Die Hard"!!.. man that must be so freakin' awesome!!!
Yippee Ki yay mo fo
Great video
Definitely a Christmas movie
In 1986 a friend in LA lived in the same apartment building and hung out with Rod Thorp, who told us about selling his recent book to Fox and that they were working on a movie. He said it was about terrorists taking over a skyscraper but at the time we didn’t think much about it. My friend later did his own movie (“Deep Down” 1994) where he had Rod playing a short-order cook in a diner.
Woahhh ok this is one of those instances where I was watching a video, saw your notification about Die Hard, and immediately switched over. Die Hard first, SBF fraud news second 😅
loved this great job
We have your movies to remember you Bruce. Truly a phenomenal actor.
Is he really near the end as I hear? Can't find out much online. I know he's aged a lot in recent years. He's only 67, much younger than he appears now.
@@bobpierce115 I don't know, his family are probably trying to keep it private since it'd be tough to go through and they don't want the media in their faces with cameras.
@@Daniel-nn8mr I'm sure you're right. Either he's near the end and want to keep it under wraps, or may look and sound handicapped and they want to shield him from that. Either way, we send him good thoughts as we approach this Christmas weekend.
@@bobpierce115 just so you know, handicapped isn't a term that's used anymore it's the word disabled. And what he has is similar to Alzheimer's and dementia.
@@Daniel-nn8mr No, you're right, I forgot. Yes, what he has is in that 'type' of category, but different. I think he wants to be remembered as he was before becoming ill, regardless of how much time he has. I'd feel the same way.
Still one of the all time great... _CHRISTMAS MOVIES!_
Its a small thing but those two Heli's flying around like that still blows my mind.
Bruce Willis will forever be identified with the character, but he's proven he has real acting chops in many roles, such as (of course!) The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and others.
John Mclane was the first Action movie Character who DIDN’T Want to be the hero. Who DIDN’T want to save the day. He just had a long flight, An Argument with his Wife and he was Tired and he just wanted to sit down somewhere and take a load off. Then all hell breaks loose and the man doesn’t even get a chance to put his shoes on! So he’s running around with No shoes on in the middle of a Terrorists takeover which was the last thing he ever expected and now he’s just trying to get the COPS to come in and save the day. And even as he’s pretty much FORCED to save the day, He’s Complaining about it the whole Damn time. What kind of Hero Complains about having to be A Hero? 😂 (Come out the coast……..we’ll get together, Have a Few laughs……”) The fact that he was just a Regular guy who didn’t need the aggravation and who was just trying to get out of that Hell Storm in One piece is what Makes JOHN MCCLANE One of the greatest action hero Characters and what Makes DIE HARD Possibly the Greatest Action Movie of ALL Time.
Die Hard is both a Bruce Willis movie and Christmas movie. It can be both.
Also who can forget John McClane in the smal cramped elevator shaft. Lights a Zippo turning his head one way then the other. “Come out to the coast. We’ll get together. Have a few laughs.” 😂😂😂
Burt Reynolds moustache would play the part very well lol
All these years I thought Die Hard was released at Christmas. I just watched it on Christmas Eve. Lol
I like to think bruce claimed it isn't a christmas film to stir the pot and ensure the debate lived on. For me it's always qualified as one, even if it isn't about santa and his elves or a kid wanting a special present. Bottom line, it's a classic
An absolute classic. Dh2 is my personal fave and I'd argue helped establish the DH tropes...the famous one liner as the final eff you to the bad guy, etc. 5 was crap....but given what we know about willis...maybe we were too hard on it.
bruce willis is right its not a christmas movie, its THE christmas movie! and imo its a masterpiece of a movie and the best action movie of all time, nothin today will come close to how brilliant it is and never ever try to remake it
The fact that McClain couldn't find shoes....made the story of this film , more threatening.
To talk about timing, yesterday I read finished the Die hard screenplay, it was awesome. Just like the movie, well written character, pacing and the story itself. Highly recommended!!!
and suddenly I'm feeling the Christmas spirit!
❤️❤️❤️❤️ Bonnie Bedilia!
It's a Christmas Movie!!
I can remember 16 when this movie come out and it defies all expectations. I don’t even think Bruce was in much of the trailers but he redefined what the bad ass hero was and made John McClane more approachable with dry whit and a bit of sarcasm. This movie truly does stand the test of time. It was really something big because for years people would say their movie was “Die Hard on a bus”, or “Die Hard on a plane”, “Die Hard on a battleship”,etc…
Yippee-Ki-Yay...!!! Most definitely a favorite saying, still!
nice👍
Reginald VelJohnson was Carl on Perfect Strangers in 89" a year after Die Hard and before Family Matter debut in the fall of 89".
Uh.. ..Bruce was doing Moonlighting.
@@blackamerican40 What is your point? My comment was about the black actor not bruce willis. it had nothing to do with moonlighting.
Last boyscout is so underrated
Thanks for the reminder. Going to watch this again. Ive lost count now how many times now
A brilliant movie my all time favourite 🎥👌👌👌👌
Jake Peralta just entered the chat
Well idk maybe it ENDED?
WTF Happened to Die Hard? It become a smashed hit; dubbed in dozens of languages and it still kick@ss.
Die Hard 43 - McClane Saves Santa with a Vengeance
Bruce Willis showed everyone that he was more than a comedic TV star. He was also more than an action star. I love everything about this movie. And they wanted to know why, he was paid $5 million. Because he worked his ass off.
Pięknie.
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is my favorite Christmas movie of all time; Die Hard is a very close second.
So much better than CGI!
"I don't play villains, I play very interesting people." - Alan Rickman
MY xmas movie every year since it was released.
how about a wtf happened to vampire in Brooklyn?
My favourite movie of all time
Pretty funny he was moonlighting on Moonlighting.
are Rotten Tomatoes scores representative of the reviews in 1988? not sure
All I have to say that Bruce Willis was to be born as a BADASS AWESOME STAR! That second GI JOE movie, fuck''n HALARIOUS! 1776 as a code for unlocking his characters weapons, shear genius!
.Bruce, my boy, bless your enthusiasm, SIR! YOU had proven yourself times infinity!!!!¡!!!!
You have done GREAT, kid!!!!!!!
Die Hard is a true classic
Watched this yesterday yes it’s a Christmas film 🎥 Bruce had made 2 films the other was sunset
Those water jug measurements seems confusing and the steel braided cables. Of course How High i need money vocal wardrobe and the dooster ridiculous funny
You know die hard 5 was less than stellar when you pick up the die hard anthology on dvd and not only is it not part of the collection but you also completely forgot you even watched it when it was in theaters...
Even Disney considers this an Xmas movie. They bundle the DVD with other Xmas movies.
The fact that Die Hard never ascended to the top spot at the box office is incredible. That would never happen today. A movie is written off as a flop so easily, hell Disney stock took a nose dive when Avatar The Way of Water didn't match projections on opening weekend
How would be a flop today ?
Twister........ thats a movie i not seen in around 20 years probably

great movie
Christmas is a Die Hard movie.
Prove me wrong!
Also watch violent night if you want a die hard tribute that's absolutely Christmas
I'm planning on seeing it this weekend
It saddens me that a lot of content creators focus more on Willis' more recent films and his seeming lack of interest. But, the thing is, isn't he operating with dysphasia or aphasia? It would be tough to emote well with either, I'm sure. As far as the sequels go, I've enjoyed them all as they're "Die Hard" movies and all have something of the qualities of the first one...especially McClane's ability to suffer injuries that would disable or kill anyone else. Maybe he's part of the MCU?
Still the greatest Christmas movie of all time - 9.5/10
Its not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from the Nakatomi Tower
John Mcclane is my favorite action hero. Well one of them anyway. The way he talks to himself in his sarcastic ways was great. Bruce is the man. I hope his condition gets better. Die Hard with a Vengeance is the best one in my opinion. First one is good but third is fantastic.
I think Vengeance is easily as good as the first one. 2 was good, but not of the same caliber. And 4 was pretty meh.
Last man standing
In my personal opinion, DIE HARD is my favorite Christmas Movie.
Screw "National Lampoon's and Home Alone"!
I have all the movies if I can ever get them back from grandson
Die hard is a goddamn Christmas movie and it is a goddamn good Bruce Willis movie
Is this title deserved? This movie is still relevant. With a vengeance is actually my favourite from the franchise.
Didn't John McClane also appear in National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon?
Yup, when they blow up his home at the beach by mistake lol
Yes he did
