The other good part of this film is it makes John McClain an everyman action hero surrounded by people who are willing to do the same. The bomb technician stays behind when he realises there's still kids in the building. The male & female detectives stay to try and rescue the kids. Even the Captain is on the ground trying to rally the squad to help. They all could be a squad of John McClains, we just happen to know Willis' character from previous movies. Sometimes I just like watching competent people be good at their job in movies.
YES! I had originally written about that, but cut it out when the video was getting too long. But I love that John isn't at odds with other law enforcement in this movie! (this is my personal account btw)
This is my favorite Die Hard film because it’s the only one where McClane came off as an actual police officer. Also, he was on his turf and felt more at ease and natural.

Die Hard With a Vengeance is not only my favourite Die Hard film, it's one of my favourite action films. The hot and gritty New York setting, the bait and switch plot, the buddy cop relationship. Everything about it (except for the soft ending) is damn near perfect. I can look at a map of New York and follow where John McClain ventured. Sometimes I watch it just to pretend I'm in New York and walking around Battery Park and Wall Street. Fun film.
One of my favorite moments in the movie was when John hitches a ride with a construction worker with an encyclopedia for a brain and a relentless energy to share knowledge. It always makes me smile when John casually drops the question of who the 21st President was and the worker, without skipping a heartbeat (thanks to amazing editing), says "Chester A. Arthur" then quickly and rhetorically asks if John was aware of Arthur's professional tenure in New York. My take away from that scene and character was the epitome of never judging a book by its cover as genius and talent can exist anywhere regardless of a person's demeanor, socioeconomic background or their profession. And yes, this is far and away the best sequel to one of the best action movies ever made. I would also love to see how they shot the scene of John and Zeus driving through Central Park. Sam Jackson looked to be legitimately holding on for dear life at certain moments. Love this movie!! 😀
That scene helped my wife and I win a board game once, final question about American presidents and I'll never forget that scene (well, the whole film really) so Mr Arthur was my answer for the win 😂
Have to agree out of all the diverse equals this was the better of them, Mostly because it had a great ensemble cast and the fact that Bruce Willis and Sam Jackson work well together too bad they didn't make more films together they made a great Duo.

My favorite Die Hard movie. I love that it's set in NYC & how it hits the ground running. Plus, Bruce Willis & Samuel L. Jackson had great chemistry. And Jeremy Irons was dope. I can buy him as Hans's brother.
Yeah I have Die Hard, Die Hard 2, and Die Hard with a Vengence on DVD because they are still some of my favorite Bruce Willis action films. I highly recommend checking out his other early action films that go underappreciated like Last Man Standing which is a action film but set more in the early days of the Industrial revolution in the US kinda of like Peeky Blinders. There is also good comedy with action in The Last Boy Scout which has great comedy as well as action. There are many of Bruce Willis early action films that go seriously underappreciated but my personally favorite is this one for various reasons. I like that you saw his character that showed how he was just this cop from NYC who was just trying to do his job to protect the innocent. This showed more acting skill from Samuel L Jackson which people don't remember it but he was in comedies for years. It was him staring in Pulp Fiction and this that changed that for him. Now he has been in multiple action films but I still remember when he would just appear in a comedy with Eddie Murphy like he does in Coming To America. Nobody seems to remember how he did spoofs of action films like National Lapoon's Loaded Weapon which is also in my personal collection. It's crazy how much as changed since this film was released and this was also the most thought provoking of the Die Hard films with the idea of puzzles being used by the antagonist. This is definitely one if not the best from his movie career from the past several decades. I still remember when people thought he couldn't cut it in action because he had only been in the show Moonlighting where the character he played was nothing like John McClane.
saw this movie when I was in elementary school and laser disc was the shit back then. Im 35 years old now and this is still probably in my top 5 or at least top 10 action films of all time. I was so young back then but its amazing how cool this movie still is.
Masterpiece. I first saw this movie when i snuck into a random theater with my G movie ticket. I was instantly amazed with this movie and saw it 8 more times over a few weeks that summer. I loved seeing all the NYC places that i had been to or passed by, it made the movie feel real. "Die Hard with a Vengeance" indeed.
Saw the first one sometime in late '88 or early '89 and it was just one of those fun action movies like Indiana Jones meets Bond but far more realistic. This movie, I remember renting some time in '95/96 and then I saw a TV version of it on Fox I believe where they had to make the message on McClane's boards in Harlem less offensive by doing it digitally. I never knew they actually had Willis standing out there with just two blank whiteboards on and added the message in post, which surprised me. For 1995, that was good digital work for such a thing. I own this and the first movie, the second one I can take or leave. I've never seen the other "sequels" as they don't matter to me. The interplay between Jackson and Willis is on fire. You really believe what is going on and what they are saying and having conversations and arguments about. Movie isn't perfect due especially with the ending but it stands up for sure.
@@JohanKylander Empire Strikes Back was a sequel. Die Hard with a Vengeance is a direct sequel to Die Hard. Jeremy Irons plays Simon Gruber brother of Hans Gruber
@@JohanKylander I know it is confusing. Superman Returns is another direct sequel. So you have Superman the movie. Superman 2 Superman Returns. Clearly the writers of Superman Returns didn't watch Superman 2 because the plot holes are so big you can drive a truck through them
Not only do I love the DH trilogy... I remember my dad renting this one weekend and we had two videos and I would tape films I would like. I had DH1&2 taped off the telly...ive vivid memories of watching DH2 on RTE2(irish channel) late at night in 93-94 a few days after Christmas... I stayed up pausing and starting recording when the ads were on... Anyway anyone remember the Die Hard Trilogy game? I had it for the PlayStation (and a game called Die Hard Arcade for the Saturn, but that was basically Streets of Rage 3d in a skyscraper) It was 3 games. A 2.5d overhead shooter in a skyscraper for DH... A light gun game rail shooter, like Time Crisis for DH2... And a driving game for DH3... You'd have to rocket it around the city to locations to get to bombs within the time limit. There were other mechanics too but it was unbelievably frustrating... You'd have to memorise every route and enemy, obstacle etc and you'd barely have a second left sometimes... The games definitely needed more polish, and maybe be split onto more discs to give them more depth and detail, but for the time it was amazing, novel idea and it took the best elements from each film and it was really fun to play. I never bother with 4&5, to me the ending of the series is with this film. There used to be a video of Kevin Smith talking about working on DH with Bruce and writing the 'warlock' scene and having 'Bruce Willis chicken' and tasty cake and stuff from new Jersey... He talks about Bruce having such a love for the franchise and winning a battle with the studio. While dh2 was a repeat of the first, and yea it was really well done, I am really pleased that this takes a completely different turn, but still FEELS like Die Hard. Bruce and Sam work amazingly well together and yeah it's Riggs and Murtagh at their best. I love Jeremy Irons(only last year I drove past her s big pink castle in Ireland) in anything... Hes easily my favourite Alfred... Definitely a good follow up to Rickman.
I think 4 is worth watching. It has a couple of over the top scenes, but I think it is pretty good overall. I actually like it better than 2. But 5? Avoid that like the plague if you want to preserve your respect for the Diehard franchise.
@@cjsm1006 cheers for the heads up mate 👍 I just checked and they all are on Disney+ here so I'll give 4 a go this evening. I've heard the last one is utter tripe all right! Ambush in the elevator hints: 1. Guard is wearing military style boots. 2. The guard talking to him refers to raining as “Dogs and cats l” 3. While making small talk. The same guard referred to the elevator as a “lift.” The European word. 4. Finally, the badge…
Great video, as usual. Die Hard 3 is kinda like Batman Returns in that I spent years figuring out if I loved the original films or the sequels more. When push comes to shove, I gotta go with the firsts in both franchises. But Die Hard With a Vengeance is an all-timer in my book. Enjoyable, nostalgic, well-acted, and fresh. McTiernan in top form.
The producers as much as acknowledged that, by, not, numbering it, and, not, mentioning the events of the second film, not, to mention, that it works far better as a direct sequel.
@@bodacious117 They actually have the fourth film rated above it, which is even worse than the second, only the worst film in the series finds itself rated lower, that truly is complete idiocy.
This was the first of any Die Hard Movies I had ever seen as a kid and I still feel like a kid when I watch it as 30+ year old man. I think it’s damn near perfect!
I remember seeing this in theaters growing up. And then playing the ps1 game with the 3 different movies. I'll always love that 3rd film. I always think about the water puzzles in the park.
That elevator scene was f+ckin' EPIC!!!! John M. felt the danger....was surrounded, did the math....and then pulled the trigger!!!! Multiple times!!!! Detective Johnny M. is my number 2 man... right behind Han Solo...or, Hon. Pronounce it how you want!!! (Awesome episode, brother!!!!) The Die Hard franchise is Hollywood Gold!!!!!
Actually he should have done the math right away because no way he can bump into several cops who look like that they stepped out from an SS recruiting poster. Regular cops don't look like that.
What a great video! Cheers boys, really enjoyable! I love the Die Hard films but this is probably my favourite by an inch. The ending was disappointing though, we didn’t really get to see the smile wiped of the bad guys face like with Alan Rickman.
Great work! I never knew about that alt ending, and a little sad it wasn't the one chosen. Although much darker, I think it was a little better, imho. Maybe it was just a bit ahead of its time!
Loved this movie as a kid. & Still do. Just something about Bruce Willis and Samuel playing relatable guys in a dangerous situation. & The smarts they have to use to get out of it. Like the math problem scenario lol
I have always wanted to know how/why the writers managed to create a film with so many glaring parallels to the future events of 9/11, who added the specific material, what they knew in 1995 and how they knew it.
This film is by far the best of the series, it also captures a snapshot of pre-Guiliani sanitized NYC and the pre-internet and cell phone infected world. These were the last few good years where this reality still felt comfortable.
This movie is a mastercalss in filmmaking from John Mactiernan. Every shot, camera move, the editing and pacing. This should be tought in film class. My Favourite as well, although I watch the first part more times just becuase that is such a christmas classic as well.
One problem with the alternate ending: The rocket launcher (an M72 LAW) is a hollow tube that shoots a projectile out of the front and a bunch of flames and plastic chips out of the back. This results in a "caution zone" of 40m behind the weapon and a 15m "danger zone" behind the weapon. They both would have died, or be seriously injured.
Alternate ending idea from Director [But studio decline for use official idea ending later] is McClane can't find Gruber and Gruber escape with private jet with team and some members in team are accident open bomb briefcase and bomb start working, Gruber say something like "Who's have water and gallons?" and faded ending.
I was lucky to meet Bruce Willis around the time he made this movie. He was very nice, even when i said, Yippee Ki-Yay Die Hard 3. :) I still enjoy A Good Day To Die Hard even with it's flaws. 🍺😺
One of the best sequels ever made. The chemistry between Willis and Jackson was magical. This and the first Die Hard are the best of the franchise and honestly the only ones that were worth making.
I used to LOVE this film except for the lacklustre ending. Now this video reveals that this was a replacement ending, and what the original plan was: I much prefer what the original plan was - please film-makers - release that original cut! I'd buy it!!
This wasn’t the best Die Hard film, but I thoroughly enjoy it to this day. It’s a tie for second favorite with Die Hard 2 for me. Also, it’s only gotten better appreciated with Die Hard 4 & 5 out there now. Makes you wish they stopped here.
@ 13:55 While I would love to see the version with the alternate ending, the major flaw with that is that both of them would probably die anyway regardless of which way the rocket launcher was pointing due to the back blast and the proximity of the explosion. That would at the very least seriously wound, if not kill, the other person. Especially at that close of a range
7:11 - Technically, even they didn't share any scenes together, Willis and Jackson first worked together in 1993's National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1. Then 94's Pulp Fiction, then 95's Die Hard with a Vengeance, then 2000's Unbreakable, then 2016's Split (no scenes together) and finally 2019's Glass.
Great video! I absolutely LOVE this movie. I'll admit that the ending is the only thing that isn't as great as everything else. I'm not sure what I would have done differently, I've read others say that the ending should have been in New York and not been either the time jump one, or the one where they go to Canada. Despite that, I still watch this movie at least once a year. Such a blast
I turned 15yrs old in the summer of '95', snuck into this film, & loved this film. They should of stopped after this one. The 4th was alrite, given the actors in it.
Hensleigh's script is so much better than the film. It actually explains the "water jug" scene and how the solve the riddle. Unlike the film, that just cuts to the answer. Also, Hensleigh is a good screenwriter so his script is a fun read with a more entertaining last act.
Have you actually worked out the water barrel problem, i still can’t figure it out after all these years, did you really understand it??? Niiiiiiiiiiice video Anyoldwho.
Love this entry, to me the high water mark of the series! Funny. exciting; superlative entertainment. Nearly exists on the level of a live action Looney Toon short in some sequences. And Jeremy Irons is ridiculously enjoyable.
I watch this more than the first cause I consider the first a Christmas movie and this an anytime movie. I also get a really dark chuckle out of one scene.
LOVE this movie. It's honestly a toss-up for me, whether I prefer this one or the original; they're both great. Not a huge fan of Die Hard 2 and we won't bring up the last film, however I remember Live Free or Die Hard also being a pretty enjoyable and competent film
Die Hard with a Vengeance has always been my favorite Die Hard movie. I love how they took the concept and stretched it out. I like how it's kinda goofy with the whole Simon Says thing, but it's still good. It's the best Die Hard movie that doesn't take place in one small location.
The Canadian connection to Die Hard 3 other than actor Graham Green is the 21st POTUS Chester A. Arthur was believed to be born in Canada, rather in Vermont which lead to a controversy of his birthplace
I used to go back and forth between this and the original film for which I like better, since it depended on my mood that day. However, I would say this is the 2nd best Die Hard film with the original being the best

@@JohanKylander Empire Strikes Back was a sequel. Die Hard with a Vengeance is a direct sequel to Die Hard. Jeremy Irons plays Simon Gruber brother of Hans Gruber
@@leejohnstone4663 Oh! "Direct sequel" means that it's directly related but not directly after? That's confusing.
@@JohanKylander I know it is confusing. Superman Returns is another direct sequel. So you have Superman the movie. Superman 2 Superman Returns. Clearly the writers of Superman Returns didn't watch Superman 2 because the plot holes are so big you can drive a truck through them
I'll always have a soft spot for this one as it was the first Die Hard I was old enough to see in a cinema.
One of the best action movies period! Willis and Jackson were amazing and funny
I had it for the PlayStation (and a game called Die Hard Arcade for the Saturn, but that was basically Streets of Rage 3d in a skyscraper)
It was 3 games.
Sad what happened to Bruce and a pity we never got a proper Logan style final Die Hard movie with him.
I'm going to give the novel Nothing Lasts Forever a read since Die Hard is basically an adaptation of it.
This is my favorite Die Hard film actually. And my second favorite Bruce Willis film after the fifth element.
Ambush in the elevator hints:
1. Guard is wearing military style boots.
2. The guard talking to him refers to raining as “Dogs and cats l”
3. While making small talk. The same guard referred to the elevator as a “lift.” The European word.
4. Finally, the badge…
Back when heros used to be smart
Great video, as usual. Die Hard 3 is kinda like Batman Returns in that I spent years figuring out if I loved the original films or the sequels more. When push comes to shove, I gotta go with the firsts in both franchises. But Die Hard With a Vengeance is an all-timer in my book. Enjoyable, nostalgic, well-acted, and fresh. McTiernan in top form.
Wow, great job on this one guys!! Me thinks you guys really love some Diehard. I feel the love put into this retrospective!!!😊
Great video. Die Hard with a Vengeance is the only worthy successor to the original.
I miss those big page movie section in the newspaper that also showed the theaters and the showtimes. I used to love looking at those on Fridays
Easily my favorite Die Hard movie. It’s so damn good.
The first one is better but this movie is second best for me.
This was the first Die Hard movie I was old enough to see and it's what got me hooked on the franchise. Thanks to all those involved.
"Are you aiming for these people? - No.. Well, maybe that mime."
"I'm a soldier, not a monster." I'll never forget that line.
This and The Last Boy Scout are my favorite Willis films. Zero question.
Loved this as a kid, watched it a hundred times.
After the disappointment of DH2, mainly because it was pretty much DH1 in an airport, DH3 felt fresh, unique, and a great sequel.
The producers as much as acknowledged that, by, not, numbering it, and, not, mentioning the events of the second film, not, to mention, that it works far better as a direct sequel.
Definitely underated. Personally I will always be undecided whether this or the original is better.
I actually prefer die hard with a vengeance over the first one, both are amazing
I think they're equal, yet, somehow, RT, has DHWAV rated second-lowest, only above the last film, absurd, it truly is.
@@matthewdaley746 yeah to have die hard 2 above with a vengeance is insanely stupid
@@bodacious117 They actually have the fourth film rated above it, which is even worse than the second, only the worst film in the series finds itself rated lower, that truly is complete idiocy.
@@matthewdaley746 idk I don’t really care for the second film that much to be honest but I can see why people like it more than the fourth one
@@bodacious117 It took two terrible sequels to make people realize that things hadn't, yet, fallen to the depths they'd eventually reach.
This was the first of any Die Hard Movies I had ever seen as a kid and I still feel like a kid when I watch it as 30+ year old man. I think it’s damn near perfect!
I've always loved this film. A lot of it is also due to the chemistry between Bruce and Sam.
Love this one, the chemistry between them is just so great.
The alternate ending would have witnessed John McClane's sanity escape him, things truly could have been far worse, no question.
Great work! I never knew about that alt ending, and a little sad it wasn't the one chosen. Although much darker, I think it was a little better, imho. Maybe it was just a bit ahead of its time!
Yup, loved it. Had a nice vibe to it, helped by the top quality actors + decent enough story.
My favorite Bruce Willis movie and one of my favorite action movies of all time!!
Loved this movie as a kid. & Still do. Just something about Bruce Willis and Samuel playing relatable guys in a dangerous situation. & The smarts they have to use to get out of it. Like the math problem scenario lol
I still remember seeing this with my dad when I was like 10 in Totowa. It was a really good time at the movies
Zeus: told you park drive was always jam. John McClane: I didn't say park drive. I said through the park
One of my Favorite Sequels of all time
Put this up with
Superman II
Terminator 2
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Aliens
Lethal Weapon 2
I have always wanted to know how/why the writers managed to create a film with so many glaring parallels to the future events of 9/11, who added the specific material, what they knew in 1995 and how they knew it.
This film is by far the best of the series, it also captures a snapshot of pre-Guiliani sanitized NYC and the pre-internet and cell phone infected world. These were the last few good years where this reality still felt comfortable.
The first one is better
This movie is a mastercalss in filmmaking from John Mactiernan. Every shot, camera move, the editing and pacing. This should be tought in film class. My Favourite as well, although I watch the first part more times just becuase that is such a christmas classic as well.
This movie is a classic. I wish they used the ending. Thars featured on the DVD. It should of ended on the ship.
Some had John Wayne others had Clint Eastwood. I had Bruce Willis. My all time number 1 with a bullet action hero.
Same brother, same.👍
@ 13:55 While I would love to see the version with the alternate ending, the major flaw with that is that both of them would probably die anyway regardless of which way the rocket launcher was pointing due to the back blast and the proximity of the explosion.
Movie was fun to watch. The action and drama blended so well. The soundtrack was the final ingredient
My all time favorite movie. I think I learned every line in the movie by heart by now. GG JoBlo!
Yeah this is my favorite Die Hard movie. Love Samuel Jackson's performance.
Yea samaual l jackson was awesome and Jeremy irons was amazing as Simon
When a popular animated toon refers to a matter in the episode as "doing a Die Hard"(Rick+Morty) ...you know it's officially THAT kind of movie. 👍👍
Die Hard 3 is one of my top 10 favorite movies of ALL time
Definitely the best Die Hard film. I saw this in the cinema when it first came out. However the fight at the end is still cut.
Holy shit that ending was amazing. A bit of the cliche of live long enough to become the villain but so good.
I LOVE Die Hard! It IS one of the greatest action movie ever made
Simple Answer YES IT IS!! (Such a Shame The Original Ending Was Changed. But The Film is Still a FANTASTIC Action Film)
Top 10 action movie in my book.Along with the first die hard.
It’s always been a favorite as far as I’m concerned there is Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengeance the others don’t exist.
Great video. I can only imagine how Simon Says would look with it's original star Brandon Lee. Would've been nice to him in a high budget action movie
The Canadian connection to Die Hard 3 other than actor Graham Green is the 21st POTUS Chester A. Arthur was believed to be born in Canada, rather in Vermont which lead to a controversy of his birthplace
Just watched this 2 days ago. Always a great ride
I used to go back and forth between this and the original film for which I like better, since it depended on my mood that day. However, I would say this is the 2nd best Die Hard film with the original being the best
They're about equal, the second one's, not, very good, and, the last two are just terrible, they feel totally different.
Simon gruber was, for the longest time, the best live action Riddler.
I'm in the scene in the park when they are diffusing the bomb in the fountain.
This movie is tremendously good
