@@rhetteverette2406 i thought and still think Lethal Weapon is the better movie, my opinion i guess, i know I've gone back and watched it more than i have Die Hard
I love Leathal Weapon but it's a true buddy cop movie. Die Hard is not. Comparing the two regarding which is a better action movie with cop protagonists would be a better dispute. John McClane alone is superior to two buddy cops combined in most instances.
Die Hard with a Vengeance is action perfection. Mainly because the original director John McTiernan returned to the franchise, whereas Lethal Weapon series had consistency with Richard Donner as director on all 4 films.
@@brion0220 the only terrible movie is A Good Day To Die Hard. the other 3 plus Die Hard are a better batch of 4 movies than the 4 Lethal Weapons movies
I saw Die Hard first and loved it, but became a Lethal Weapon fanboy in the advent of the DVD age, as it was among my first purchases. They're both like 9/10 films to me. Die Hard holds the viewer's attention with a great balance between a stealthy Christmas evening and an explosive spectacle - it almost plays like a catastrophe film, such as The Poseidon Adventure. Lethal Weapon, on the surface, is a violent detective story with a big emphasis on the two main characters' personal lives, but it's executed to perfection. Also, Gibson and Glover work fantastic on screen.
I see you guys took my advice on the Home Alone vs Die Hard video. Die Hard vs Lethal Weapon is really the ultimate Christmas Action Face Off. Both are Real Action classics. Would have been nice to see a crossover. Both films have connections, Producer Joel Silver produced both films, actress Mary Ellen Trainor appears in both films (newscaster in Die Hard & Psychiatrist in Lethal Weapon). Both Willis and Gibson were up for each others parts. Both were also released a year apart from each Lethal Weapon in 1987 & Die Hard in 1988.
These are both DEFINITELY Christmas movies, but I think Gremlins is the MOST Christmasy of all Christmas movies as it's the only movie I can think of where the main character is literally a Christmas gift.
Lethal Weapon is the better movie and series for me, though I own both sets. I find the Die Hard plots very contrived and unbelievable, and the buddy humor and chemistry is better in Lethal Weapon.
Die Hard is not just about Christmas but CHRISTMAS TRAVEL, a theme it would return to in its sequel. McClane is returning to Holly for the standard holiday reunion and earns a whole lot of redemption along the way, so it's very much about the travel experience of Christmas. Also, Beethoven's Ode to Joy was "seasonal" but generally relegated to New Year's Eve. It was Die Hard that tied it to Christmas in the public imagination.
Anyone remember the Time Crisis arcade series? I remember when playing it felt like you were a couple of cool 80s or 90s action heroes like John McClane, Riggs or Murtaugh when playing. With that said, I'd rather have seen the main characters of these action movies team up rather than choose a favorite.
Unlike Die Hard, Lethal Weapon marries two genres. There’s the procedural, where Murtaugh and Riggs are investigating a homicide. They’re interviewing POI’s and following leads. Then there’s the high intensity action parts, which hold up against Stallone and Schwarzenegger’s best. Riggs is tearing through baddies like a force of nature and Murtaugh’s right behind him. These come together so seamlessly, it’s hard to separate them. I really like Die Hard. It’s a damn good movie. But between it and Lethal Weapon, it’s always LW.
The four Lethal Weapons are also comedies, with many laugh out loud moments, and the 2nd in particular is also a romance/love story. It's a great mix of multiple genres.
I was raised on Lethal Weapon. Cop movies are my favorite because of Gibson and Glover. The themes in LW are way more Christmas based. Family, friendship.. ect. Die Hard is a great action movie. One of the best. But Lethal Weapon is a top 5 movie for me.
There’s something about the setting of Christmas in Las Angeles during the 80s that is so iconic. You also have Less Than Zero, Cobra, among other movies.
These are both good movies, but in my opinion Lethal Weapon is the better of the two films, it just has a better story and isn't confined to one setting.
Round 4 is tough but I would've given it to Die Hard. McTiernan directed 3 all time classics in a row (Predator, Die Hard, and The Hunt for Red October)
You know whats funny, in Slovakia (and czech as well) Leathal Weapon is Translated as "Smrtonostná zbraň", but Die hard is translated as "Smrtonostná pasca" which means "Leathal trap" not Die Hard, but somehow our TV/Movie translators found logic in that and many people were shocked, those two movies arent related.
Thank you for making this video. Everyone talks about Die Hard being a Christmas movie and Lethal Weapon gets overlooked. Lethal Weapon is probably my favorite because I saw it first.
I had a feeling that both of these gems would end in a tie, and I'm glad to see that it's basically what's happened here. They're both incredible and timeless. It's cool how Michael Kamen scored both of these films too. Die Hard just edges ahead though because of the deeper Christmassy cues 😊 12:49 what the heck is that? It looks NOTHING like Bruce Willis 🤭😅😆
Leth. takes it. When this Die Hard/Christmas film meme took off and made it on an episode of Fuller House, in order to fluster a hot Christmas spirit spreading chick, I immediately challenged with Lethal Weapon and Rambo.
Question: So in the 2nd Die Hard when McClain was now apart of the LAPD, was he there the same time as Riggs and Murtagh? Do they all exist in the same cinematic universe?
I loved both. But I am a Lethal Weapon guy. The chemistry between Riggs & Murtaugh, the movies score done by Clapton, and Gibson was a more believable tough guy as opposed to Willis. Also the quotable from LW are legendary. Lastly it spawned 3 fairly good sequels, all the Die Hard sequels were trash.
@moorebounce eso es porque el director y productor siempre fueron los mismos de la original algo que con die hard no paso, aunque la tercera y cuarta de die hard están bastantes buenas
Tho respect your well thought out theses, and tho I love Die Hard... it's always going to be Lethal Weapon across the board. And it's my favorite Christmas action film...followed closely by DH. 😀
6:03 Got to love a shout out to Al Leong but my favorite performance of his is in Bill&Ted. However I'm disappointed my favorite Die Hard ripoff wasn't mentioned: Toy Soldiers - Die Hard at a boarding school.
Something I noticed in lethal weapon that I can’t believe doesn’t get mentioned in lists of movie mistakes is the scene with Riggs and the jumper, as he handcuffs himself to the guy and when they jump, you can clearly see something that looks like a thin rope or string around their conjoined wrists beak right as they jump off the building. Certainly wasn’t handcuffs there, and definitely wasn’t supposed to break, not at a angle the camera could see anyways. So either no one noticed, or they didn’t think it was a big enough deal to reshoot the scene.
I prefer Lethal Weapon -- I love the developing relationship between the 2 leads, which continues through the movies, with the addition of great side characters (Leo Getz and Lorna Cole). Die Hard is more innovative, and has a brilliant villain (LW not so much), which made it more successful at the box office. I do groan a bit at the cops/FBI in Die Hard (and most of its sequels) being portrayed as dumb assholes. They're both great, but I guess I just like the buddy cop genre a little more!
Can't recreate the Magic these pictures had, that's what makes the movies from the 80's really good they had a charm, that can't be recreated no matter how much money you throw at it.
@@ZXSPEX Yeah the new stuff is overproduced and has a plastic "empty Calorie" feel to it. I think in the last 10 years I haven't watched a movie that I will watch over and over again, if you saw it once that's all you need.
It would’ve been nice if the CC had featured a “switch-up” category. Would McClaine have been able to get through Lethal Weapon, opposite Murtaugh? Would Riggs have been able to get through Die Hard? I’m thinking no, to the former, and the latter scenario would’ve resulted in Die Hard being a 30 min. short film.
For me: not even close. Lethal Weapon. So much charm to that movie. The family. The dynamic between Marty and Roger. A suicidal cop who learns from the family man. An African American man. This was good stuff.
Diehard just has a little more "Magic". Diehard is even in my Christmas movie lineup. I love lethal weapon, I saw both in theaters at 4 and 5 years old, I remember wanting to be John Mcclane over Murtaugh and Riggs.
This is like comparing "Men in Black" with "E.T" or "The Rock" with "Armageddon", not to mention, "Terminator" vs "Robocop" or even "The Goonies" vs "Indiana Jones"
You didn't mention the original soundtrack which I think could be an important point in evaluating both. Both movies used the same composer Michael Kamen with one having heavy guitar riffs by the one and only Eric Clapton.
Die Hard and Lethal Weapon...Connected. In Letthal Weapon 2,there is a nameplate in Lethal Weapon 2 on a desk in the police station, the nameplate is McClain.
My two favorite action movies of all time but I've to give Die Hard just a tiny edge because it probably has the greatest main villain of all time in the action genre and I would put McClane as a lead over Martin or Roger.
Die Hard by a mile. Everything happens within the confines of the building and considering the plot and it's a movie, everything could believably happen. LW is so over the top with the entirely clunky ending fight on the lawn. They just happen to be in the right place at the right time one too many times.
Both films are the ultimate anti-Christmas movies. I like them both, but it depends on the mood. Die Hard is more of a plot driven film that might seem in line with other 80's action films like Commando or Rambo: First Blood Part II, but the difference is rather than being a super soldier from the army, John McClane is a regular police officer/everyman thrown into a situation he can barely handle, and there is a plot twist of Han's scheme being a robbery rather than a terrorist attack. Lethal Weapon is more character driven as it feels more like a grim and darker version of 'It's a Wonderful Life'. Martin Riggs isn't a cliche loose cannon/Dirty Harry knock off, he's a depressed character with a violent streak and a death wish, but Riggs has growth throughout the film with the help of Roger Murtaugh and his family. LW also feels more like a smart detective film first that focuses on the action movie stuff when it needs to be rather than be a crazy Michael Bay explosion/shoot 'em up.
I agree with this! It's close...both movies are pretty good, but Die Hard is just a little more awesome! Lethal Weapon has a little too much cheese to it...
Lethal Weapon chemistry between the characters, the growth and trust they gain for each other for me is what puts it over the edge.
A lot of people overlook it cuz they’re ready for the finale but it was HUGE when Murtaugh trusts Riggs to drive
