Lethal Weapon and Die Hard were always on the shortlist to watch when doing a 'action movie marathon' in the 90s and early 2000s. I need to watch the lethal weapons again! Love this episode!
@@tariqxl Die hard was supposed to be Ol' Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. Because it was based on the book that was the follow-up to the detective, which was made into a movie starring Sinatra. Joe Leland was the character's name if I remember right. I read the die hard book when the movie first came out, and it is excellent. It was originally called nothing lasts forever if memory serves, and it is, amazingly, better than the movie in many ways.
The best movies in general were made in the 1980s. Even B-movies were great back then! Street Trash, The Ice Pirates, TerrorVision, Trancers, and Killer Klowns from Outer Space to name a few. They don't make 'em like they used to.
@@crazeverseben7583 Krull was excellent, but its budget places it outside "B-movie" status. Excalibur was great too. Ready Player One paid homage to both of them.
I love them all. You watch rigs go from a broken suicidal man to finding his humanity in murtagh family. Then him finding his own love. In #4 them both talking about how they are too old but saying how they cant just walk away. "How did he take my gun apart with one move?" "Ok let's go ask him"
Personally I think the Lethal Weapon series got better with each new movie. Each new character brought something special to the film. I never get tired of them. 🍻
My favorite Riggs quote, though I can't remember off the top of my head which sequel it was in, "You have the right to remain unconscious, anything you say won't be much."

Thank you for mentioning how Die Hard isn't the only Christmas action movie. I didn't realize you hadn't done this movie yet. This is one of my favorite movie series. I appreciate that they added only one new character a movie.
Yeah I agree, however one of the major musical contributors to the soundtrack Minty forgot to mention was the incredible saxophonist, David Sanborn, whose sax theme's represent Riggs. That part of the theme music is so recognizable and sets a great mood for the film. LW3 also had a great soundtrack, Sting sang the theme song "It's Probably Me" which added lyrics to the already iconic LW theme music. George Harrison's 'Cheer Down" another great theme song from the LW2 soundtrack.
@@JOECANDELA22 I love both of those songs. Cheer Down is a favorite of mine. George and Tom Petty wrote it. Always been a fan of Sting. That sax sound adds so much to the soundtrack of the series.

I think the point of Lethal Weapon 3 was to show the progression of Riggs from a suicidally depressed person to the happy go lucky person he was before his wife died. His friendship with Roger Murtaugh is what helped him recover from his sadness. Also in part 3 Riggs met his future wife, giving him purpose again. i liked the message of hope. Best Christmas movie marathon: Home Alone, Christmas Vacation, Scrooged, Rare Exports, Lethal Weapon, Black Christmas, Krampus, Gremlins, Die Hard and Invasion USA.
As always a solid video! Thank you. Whatever people might think about Gibson this days, he was absolutely amazing actor back in the day. Lethal Weapon series is one of my most favorite movie series as a whole. Yeah, all four movies. xD I understand why some people might not think highly about LW3 and 4, but I feel like making them different was a good choice: the times had changed and characters had changed as well. In a manner of speaking, it was like a series, where character went through the development from point A to point B. And I also love that LW4 ended up on a high note.
I saw Lethal Weapon three times in the theater when it came out. It was a great film and a product of the times. Michael Karen, Eric Clapton and David Sanborn created a great score that compliments the action and characters( a theme for Martin Riggs and a theme for Roger Murtaugh). I have been looking for the complete score that includes the chase and fight scenes(it wasn’t in the original soundtrack when it came out). The fight scene between Riggs and Joshua included, I think, three fighting styles (tae kwondo, Gracie jiujitsu, and Jailhouse Rock( a system created by prison inmates)and it took 4 nights to film. You could feel those punches. Director Richard Donner had a lot of television credits behind him. He directed episodes of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. My favorite episodes were The Quadipartite Affair and The Giuoco Piano Affair. I didn’t watch the Lethal Weapon series. I felt that it shouldn’t have been a series. The original intention was to introduce Lethal Weapon to a new audience. That was a mistake, in my opinion because I didn’t expect what I saw when I saw it in the theater. I felt many things watching the film. I felt for both Riggs and Murtaugh. Their differences were the highlight of the film. The two share two commonalities; they were both military men and they were both cops. But Riggs was Green Beret trained and knows how to fight and is skilled with guns. Riggs is a tragic figure being a widower no amount of elite combat training can ever prepare him for the loss of a loved one. I enjoyed all of the movies. The films after the first two went the comedic route but in my opinion, as long as we see Riggs and Murtaugh, we can expect the unexpected.
I always end up in an argument when I tell people lethal weapon and die hard are Christmas movies, and a Christmas story is a movie about a kid who manipulates his parents into buying him a gun, only to end up shooting himself with it.
The scene where Riggs busts through the door and kills like 5 henchmen after the bad guy says "forget it, there's no more heroes left in the world" still gives me goosebumps.
I still think the end music of “knocking on heavens door” is one of the most amazing renditions of that song... makes sense it’s in there with Eric Clapton being involved elsewhere in the music.
@@stevebojo4378 according to this www.whereseric.com/eric-clapton-discography/eric-clapton-film-and-television-soundtracks-all-recordings-ordered-relea-3 it’s Eric Clapton. Goggle has his fingerprints all over it.
I've been vacationing both ”Die Hard” and ”Lethal Weapon” together almost every Christmas since I was a kid. So, in my opinion, it rarely is forgotten in my household. 😆 There's also an alternative beginning with Rigs walking in to a school shooting where an apartment complex is set at the playground of an LA elementary school and a shooter is in an apartment trying to shoot and kill any children or teachers who are trapped in are on the playground and classrooms. When Riggs response to the callee then walks on to the playground without a bullet proof vest and takes out the shooter despite the huge risk involved. This beginning scene does not exist here in the United States releases.
The scene does exist in the director's cut release. I like the scene, but it is in the wrong place in the film. If you take that scene out, every other scene leads up to the audience not being sure if Riggs is a criminal or not, until the reveal in the christmas tree lot. When Donner put the scene back in, it should have been added after the tree lot scene. Then there is still that surprise of 'Oh, he's a cop working under cover" in the beginning.
Honestly, I think LW3 (my favorite in the series) shows just how much Riggs mellowed out and found the joy and humor in life again. He's still the same unpredictable nutcase we all know and love; he's just gotten gradually less self-destructive about it. This juxtaposes well with Murtaugh falling into _his own_ self-destructive spiral in the wake of killing his son's friend; with Riggs in the perfect position to pull him out of it, because he knows how deep the hole goes, and he'll be damned if he lets his partner go that far.
You ain't lyin. 80's action movies were leagues beyond the movies of today. You just don't get the Riggs & Murtaugh type chemistry nowadays. Smh so pathetic and sad
Fun fact: The bad guy with the mullet and the flannel shirt that was making the drug transaction with Riggs is Anthony Kiedis lead singer of the Chilli peppers father in real life.
Minty, Lethal Weapon, and Die Hard double feature, done that before, on Christmas in fact a few years ago. Many of my Twitter followers I remembered wondered why I picked to watch those, to which I replied, they both take place on Christmas, and I didn't have many Christmas movies on Blu Ray, which at the time, I didn't.
You also could add: 1) There is an alternate ending. 2) Riggs was originally written to die at the end of the movie. 3) Fox Plaza (Nakatomi Plaza) from Die Hard is seen in LW2 during the pool scene. 4) Both movies shared some of the same cast. Al Leong, Mary Ellen Trainor, and Grand L. Bush. 5) In Die Hard 2: Die Harder, Holly (McClane's wife) is seen reading a magazine with LW2 on the cover. I just added that last one to emphasize the connection between the two franchises.
I think that's part of the reason the movie isn't as well liked as the 1st 2 Die Hards the tone is closer to Lethal Weapon with the comedy and less of the grittiness, not really the right word but best one I could think of, of Die Hard 1 and 2.
Good morning Minty! I thought you might enjoy knowing that this film,"Lethal Weapons" is a sure fire cure for a massive hangover. More specifically, the filming of this fun little flick. The opening scene with the girls at the top of a tall circle shaped tower, was filmed in Long Beach, California. And they used a dummy for the scene of the girl jumping from the tower. I didn't know any of this the early morning after the insane party, an hour worth of sleep and me walking to work with a steamy cuppa of coffee and a throbbing headache. My coffee flew when I looked up two blocks away and saw this blond taking a dive from the top balcony of the "Circle Tower". Damn near killed myself trying to get her help, only to discover a film crew and not a body. The only thing that died that morning was my hangover. I was amazingly fine to work the next 20 hours without a single hitch.
Agreed... Funnily enough, I didn't think there was anyone else other than Bruce Willis that could possibly had played the role of John McClane. I hadn't even thought about Mel Gibson till now... But I think he might also had been great in that role
Thank you for this. Lethal Weapon is my favourite action/Buddy Cop Franchise of all time and especially the first 2 movies as you cover are more than just Buddy Cop flicks. We see a broken man who finds a place in the world something he thought lost to him in both Rog and his family among so many other awesome things. Yeah, 3 is underwhelming although there isn't a movie in this franchise without good moments, and in fairness to 4 while it has things that don't make sense like the Captain taking their Captain badges away at the end instead of giving them open spots as lieutenants which was the natural transition and just demoting them back to detectives, but they entered production without a finished script which may explain some of the issues. It is way above 3 and gives us a memorable villain something Lethal Weapon is known for and 3 got so wrong. I just wish the writers would have tried more to get a 5th movie greenlit before glover was literally too old for this shit. Just 1 more movie to make up for the mistakes of later sequels and give us a 1 and 2 vibe again. Sadly not to be but the movies will always be legendary. Great upload
One of my favorite franchises. ALL were great. The tv series tarnished the legacy. T They didn't have original cast members from the films and give them cameo appearances or where they are the leaders and focus on new detectives in their former positions. The series has been cancelled for about 2 years now.
I loved this video in particular. I'm not the biggest fan of lethal weapon but this video was hella interesting and very well structured with a great pase. Great work!!!
I like the direction the movies went. The more invested you are in the characters, the less important the action is. And as for Lethal Weapon 4... JET LI!!! nuff said
Great vid Minty! I actually just watched this recently out of the blue and was like "Man, I forgot how good this movie was!" lol. I agree that the first 2 were the best but 4 gave us a badass Jet Li though.
@@Kthomasritchie Yes! Freebie And The Bean is the BEST buddy cop movie, in my opinion. I was afraid, that I was the only one who still remembered it. I've loved it, since I was a kid.
@@Kthomasritchie "Running Scared" (1986) with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines really laid out the blueprint that Lethal Weapon picked up on. Allegedly it directly influenced Donner to lighten the tone of LW.
Minty, great video! You should do a video on another classic cop movie, "The French Connection" with Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider. It has one of, if not, the greatest chase scenes ever filmed.
Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines really started to duo cop fighting genre. I will not give that honor to 48 Hours because Eddie Murphy's character was a convict not a cop like Nick Nolte's character was. Plus Running Scared is the first salt and pepper combo police movie too.
You're right on with 48hrs!... It was exactly what came to mind the moment I heard "Lethal Weapon was credited with starting the string of cop buddy movies".
In the director's city there is an alternative opening where riggs takes out a school shooter where he risks his life being fired at twice before killing the guy
My man! I remember being a kid and not being knowledgeable of deleted scenes and whatnot, at least until I discovered laser discs. I'm showing my age here. Lol. At any rate, the scene where Riggs and Murtaugh were in the parking lot and Roger is heaping praise on Riggs for the stunt he pulled that day. I was thinking about the bust he made with those cats selling Christmas trees but cocaine in reality. Enter DVDs and they put the whole scene Roger was talking about. Ah ha! I don't even think that scene was on laser disc
Definitely love the first two movies! I don’t really remember the third movie and I think I missed number four! However I have very fond memories of the first two! Thank you for making this video and sharing your thoughts!
I love the original poster and I think it says a lot. You look at their faces collectively you can tell something serious is going on and then when look at each person separately you see two different reactions to this. Rigs almost looks hungry for it or like he’s looking forward to the chaos. Then you look at Rodger and you see he’s ready but dreading it what’s about to happen. Maybe I’m reading into it too much but that’s what it says to me.
"Their gonna bust Dixie, their gonna bust Dixie" LOL I love this series and will stop every time it is on TV. Lethal Weapon 3 is my FAVORITE! Let's not talk about #4...I hated it for a while, but watched it recently and it wasn't AS bad as I remember.
I always wanted to tell at the TV watching part 4. Why did Riggs suddenly forget that he knows martial arts? I mean he's into Tai Chi, and all that killer stuff.
There have been many great movies that went on to become franchises; following up with sequels that were arguably even better, but I am of the mind that great movies and characters should stand alone. As much as I enjoyed the second installments of franchises like Lethal Weapon, Star Wars, Die Hard, Terminator, Alien, Superman, Dirty Harry, Rocky, Indiana Jones, and a host of others, I would have been perfectly fine if they never went further than their original installment. There is just something about a truly great movie that is, "One & Done" that IMHO elevates it to an entirely different level.
I love what you're doing with these classic movies, really good. The arch of the characters in the sequels I thought worked. You can't just have a Mel Gibson on the edge of suicide for 4 movies. And again with the action, you can't just have everyone of them action action, action. Like the characters, there has to be different elements. But thats my opinion. Love it!!
Lethal Weapon and Die Hard were always on the shortlist to watch when doing a 'action movie marathon' in the 90s and early 2000s. I need to watch the lethal weapons again! Love this episode!

I have to say I enjoy your videos, and I appreciate that your more of a kind RUclipsr. Unlike some RUclipsrs... trying to get more people to view your contents.
Just like Die Hard, of course it is a Christmas movie!
So was The Exorcist, released on December 26, 1973.
Aw Jim Kelly... so precious, release date is different then plot. But keep on that battle little guy
More debatable topics!!!
Mel Gibson is genuinely one of the greatest actors of his time.
Then there's Braveheart
Not only that, he's one of the greatest DIRECTORS of his time...
Too bad he was so controversial and had all those "incidents". His fall from grace was a huge disappointment.
He is top five for intense smoulder
Absolutely!!
Yes, Lethal Weapon is a Christmas movie!
I think Clayne Crawford does a great job as Riggs in Lethal Weapon t.v series. He puts a lot of depth in the character
What about “Cobra” with Stallone? Another forgotten Christmas movie.
Which came out the same year as 'Eye of the Tiger' (1986) starring Gary Busey.
OH YA!!!
Best fkin movie ever
Best Christmas movie marathon: Home Alone, Christmas Vacation, Scrooged, Rare Exports, Lethal Weapon, Black Christmas, Krampus, Gremlins, Die Hard and Invasion USA.
@@randallsnyder5757 Rare exports? On a same list with DH & LW?
As always a solid video!
Thank you.
Whatever people might think about Gibson this days, he was absolutely amazing actor back in the day.
Lethal Weapon series is one of my most favorite movie series as a whole. Yeah, all four movies. xD
I understand why some people might not think highly about LW3 and 4, but I feel like making them different was a good choice: the times had changed and characters had changed as well.
I always end up in an argument when I tell people lethal weapon and die hard are Christmas movies, and a Christmas story is a movie about a kid who manipulates his parents into buying him a gun, only to end up shooting himself with it.
my theory is A Christmas Story is being told to the grandkids right after Thanksgiving dinner
You forgot the best line ever. "I'm too old for this s#1t."
If memory serves, it was performed by The Alarm
@@stevebojo4378 according to this www.whereseric.com/eric-clapton-discography/eric-clapton-film-and-television-soundtracks-all-recordings-ordered-relea-3 it’s Eric Clapton. Goggle has his fingerprints all over it.
The Heavens Door song was LW 2. 1989. Imdb.com . Not LW 1.
@@DavidLLambertmobile ack. Totally right! My bad.
I've been vacationing both ”Die Hard” and ”Lethal Weapon” together almost every Christmas since I was a kid. So, in my opinion, it rarely is forgotten in my household. 😆
There's also an alternative beginning with Rigs walking in to a school shooting where an apartment complex is set at the playground of an LA elementary school and a shooter is in an apartment trying to shoot and kill any children or teachers who are trapped in are on the playground and classrooms.
Die hard 2 batman returns and gremlins are also my other xmas movies
I want to know how you vacation a movie.
I remember watching Lethal Weapon with my dad the first time he brought it home from the video store.
It was awesome to watch with my late father movies Like lethal weapon saga and die hard 1 and 2.
Die Hard 2: Die Harder, is also a Christmas movie
How can the same shit happen to the same guy twice?
Watch first two movies every holiday
It’s “Die Hard 2.”
Adam McGaughey the full name is Die Hard 2: Die Harder
The third one had one of the darkest themes in any of the movies...will say, the dentist scene in the fourth one had me in stitches.
"Roger... that's a special forces tattoo".
Shadow Company is a ref in the newer Shane Black sci fi flop Predator. He wanted to make a action zombie 🧟♂️ film with Shadow Company.
Absolutely love all 4 of these movies always used to watch them with my mum and now she’s no longer with us will always remind me of her :)
MINTY! You should do The Long Kiss Goodnight in that case.
Great frikken movie!!
Yup!
Love that movie! So very underrated!!!!!
I adore that film! Geena Davis and Samuel L Jackson are awesome!!!
This movie is great, yet has disappeared from streaming
80s action > 21st century action
I wished they still made action movies like Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Point Break, etc. Nowadays it's all superhero comic book centric crap.
You ain't lyin. 80's action movies were leagues beyond the movies of today. You just don't get the Riggs & Murtaugh type chemistry nowadays. Smh so pathetic and sad
@@BennyLlama39 Cumsily packaged PSAs.
Only movie this century that can compete with 80s is Edge of tomorrow
Blax Tony and Steve in the Avenger movies comes pretty close a few times but yeah on the whole there seems to be less chemistry
Earlier this year, Rumors of Mel Gibson being interested in doing Lethal Weapon 5 also started.
Bruv needs a paycheck?
Lethal weapon 5 is confirmed
Fun fact: The bad guy with the mullet and the flannel shirt that was making the drug transaction with Riggs is Anthony Kiedis lead singer of the Chilli peppers father in real life.
That’s cool. He was a thug in point break too
I love how shane black had a serious tone for this film but then the franchise he played in witch was more serious was turned into a comedy
First buddy cop movie is arguably The French Connection but I'd also suggest Freebie and the Bean.
I really appreciate your shows and thoroughly enjoy them. I'd like to see you do Lethal Weapon 2.
Thanks for doing these!
You also could add:
1) There is an alternate ending.
Thank you, Mark, for another great video. Please don’t stop!
Fun Fact: The original title of DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE's script was LETHAL WEAPON 4.
I have all 4 of these on VHS. The tapes are still in good shape!
I miss my VCR
I didn't forget Lethal Weapon for Christmas, I just saw it again for probably the 25th time last night before your video posted! LOL!!
Man gotta say Mel Gibson as John McLane doesn’t sound too bad as much as I love Die Hard
Agreed... Funnily enough, I didn't think there was anyone else other than Bruce Willis that could possibly had played the role of John McClane. I hadn't even thought about Mel Gibson till now... But I think he might also had been great in that role
EastBay MauiBoy agree
@@eastbaymauiboy Eddie Murphy.
As always Minty - thank you for doing these vids. Sadly my life has taken another turn for the worse, so seeing these vids you do really cheers me up.
Danny Glover must be one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood.
I met DG briefly a few years ago. Hes not very polite or friendly.
Always enjoy watching your series, and wonder if you have reviewed the comedy movie "Blind Date" with Bruce Willis and Kim Basinger
Could you do Escape From L.A. finally? 😁
I know one fact that movie was not any good at all.
I remember watching this movie and I realized that this is a fun action comedy film! I love it!😂😂😂 Or as Roger would say, "I'm too old for this shit!"
I like the direction the movies went. The more invested you are in the characters, the less important the action is. And as for Lethal Weapon 4... JET LI!!! nuff said
6:25, Busey is still crazy till this day!😂😂🤣🤣🤣
That motorcycle accident really messed with his head, literally and figuratively...
Great vid Minty! I actually just watched this recently out of the blue and was like "Man, I forgot how good this movie was!" lol. I agree that the first 2 were the best but 4 gave us a badass Jet Li though.
One of the best Christmas movies of all time.
great video Minty! add LW 2 to the list of shows to do! Good work!!
48 Hours can't be the start of the "buddy cop" genre because Eddie Murphy's character wasn't a cop.
Freebie and the Bean (1974) was arguably the start of the genre.
@@Kthomasritchie Yes! Freebie And The Bean is the BEST buddy cop movie, in my opinion. I was afraid, that I was the only one who still remembered it. I've loved it, since I was a kid.
Technically not, but aside from that, it meets requirements.
@@Kthomasritchie "Running Scared" (1986) with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines really laid out the blueprint that Lethal Weapon picked up on. Allegedly it directly influenced Donner to lighten the tone of LW.
@@Dr0p0fahat Lethal Weapon was done in 1984. It came before Running Scared. Although Running Scared was a great movie.
Plus Running Scared is the first salt and pepper combo police movie too.
ohhhh nooooo....

Love that movie
They are in their car over there.
4 is ok, it's just the ending. Its terrible. " we're not friends, we're family" aw feck off!
#4 is definitely the weakest of the series.
Always liked part 2 joss aukland good bad guy
10 things you didn’t know about Road To Perdition (Highly underrated movie)
Thanks for the videos this year and I hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas
Die Hard is more of a Christmas movie since the motif is far more prominent (e.g. the soundtrack).
Love it!!
