For me it could never rise above being "Die Hard 1, but at a airport." It really is just the first film all over again. I wouldn't be surprised if they actually just re-used the same script but just added the new setting. I'm usually ok with sequels being a repackaged take on the original film. But for some reason Die Hard 2 isn't exciting enough to overcome quite literally being "Die Hard, again." First, it's largely kind of boring imo. After the first act and first big action beat the narrative just kind of lulls and spins its wheels without much energy or momentum. We're just waiting for the next action scene. I've seen the film numerous times and the film still can't really recall the film in any great detail. Airport. Terrorists. A shoot out, the money shot of McClane using the ejector seat...that's really it. The action itself isn't as memorable or tense as the first film, either - just generic boom-boom bam-bam stuff without the expertly executed shot composition, blocking, and editing found in McTernan's films. The villains are more bland, too. Eh, I WANT to love Die Hard 2. It's just very un-exciting.
People sometimes act like we MUST like the first Die Hard the most. But I've always liked the third one the most. Samuel Jackson and Jeremy Irons were absolutely fantastic, and the story was excellent. The original film is my second favorite, but I definitely love the third one the most. Thanks Minty.

I've met Bruce Willis several times and the first was the day before he went to start filming Die Hard With A Vengeance the second time was outside a restaurant in L.A. He was very kind both times and I wish him and his family the best. Bruce has brought so much joy to all his fans. 😻❤
Simon and Hans are clearly 2 of the best movie villains of all time. They've got that sort of odd "Lawful Evil" thing going on, where it almost seems like they'd be alright guys to have lunch with, so long as they weren't at work.

The script is well written (if you ignore the goofs), the characters are perfectly written, the chemistry between Willis and Jackson is crazy. Here's what I like about the Die Hard movies, at least the first 4, I haven't seen the 5th one. There's a natural progression to them: the first one McClain deals with saving a building, the 2nd one deals with McClain having to save an entire airport. The 3rd one deals with McClain having to save a city, and the 4th one deals with McClain having to save a country.
5 was pretty bad. It was more about his son and John was just in for the ride. And it feels nothing like Die Hard. Its just a mindless action movie that happens to be connected to John.
@HealthHorror yea, I had read those things. And I saw how bad the critical reception was as well as the audience score and thats why I never bothered watching it, it just felt like little else than a money grab.

@mikeadams7904 I'm from the UK and I remember seeing this film in the cinema, there was a scene in the movie at the end when our two heroes get on the ship and a wire snaps cutting a henchman in half. I vividly remember seeing him being sliced in half at the cinema but when it came out on DVD it was cut. So they probably edited or cut a chunk of the fight
I know what you mean, the Touchstone pictures VHS/DVD version was atrociously edited and dubbed, but I've had a US, Australian and German version of the film and they're all uncut but that scene is still terribly edited. As far as I know, no version has ever featured that fight in full, but there's definitely something missing because it's so terribly edited. He had a violent fight in Die Hard 2, which resulted in McClane stabbing the guy in the eye with an icicle, so I can't imagine it's much worse than that
This movie’s great! Loved seeing Coleen Camp(the maid in Clue) and the idea for the liquid explosives was really cool. When that nerd guy puts just a little of each on the paperclip and then throws it in the corner 💥 then everybody freaks the fxck out at him 😂
That fat bomb tech nerd guy was awesome. Remember later when they try to make him evacuate and he learns kids are still in danger and says "I'm stayin".
I work in the Federal Reserve building depicted in this movie. The gold is really there. Its the largest gold vault in the US, even larger than Fort Knox. And when you are down in the vault, you can hear the subway going by. However, the subway tunnel is much further away than what is shown in the film. In fact, that Wall Street stop was a fake. The real one is several block further south. When they were building the fake subway stop and filming the scenes there, Bank staff were watching out of the windows. One thing that drives us crazy is how easily the bad guys entered the building. I assure you there is no way you are getting in, just by saying you have “an appointment”.
Laurence Fishburne was originally supposed to play Powell in the original. DH3 was supposed to have set pieces similar to the original, but nyc don’t like the idea of its city being violently portrayed, on film, so they refused to allow filming until certain violent elements were removed from the script. This movie is pretty much a love letter to nyc, as it seems the city itself is a character in the film. Also, Last Action Hero is not a bad movie. It just got released right after Jurassic Park and subsequently failed at the box office. Arnold himself said he is receiving residuals from it now.
When this came out I was watching it for months, I don’t think I had seen the first one and I had seen the second one not knowing what it was, I was very young at the time. When this came out it was awesome and something I had never seen done before and Bruce, Samuel L and Jeremy Irons were great in it! Thanks for doing this one Minty!
I saw this film at the cinema when it first came out and was-BLOWN-away !!! GREAT time at this movie, car chases,explosions,gun-fights and a-GOOD-villian, Never a dull moment. LOL.
Have you done a 10 things for Idiocracy yet? Tried looking for one and no luck. If not, I think you should! I'm sure you've probably seen it based on your content, but if not, it is a must watch. What was supposed to be a dystopian futuristic satire is borderline prophetic in 2023. I feel like it should be required curriculum right next to Fahrenheit 451 and Animal Farm. Love your content! Been following for a while now! You review the best deep-cut movies from back in the day, and it's awesome!
This is actually the very first Die Hard I watched in the Cinema. It also is the first to deviate from the one man army and single location of the first 2 movies. It is my favourite of the Die Hard Sequels and Jackson is a great foil for Willis. Coming out the year after Pulp Fiction it has a neat wrap connection with the "smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo."
Me top. I was a kid in the 90s and this movie was on cable almost every day I’m glad it was because it was great It took me a few viewings to figure out the water jug puzzle
You forgot #11 - John McClane is STILL wearing the same white/ brown shirt. Btw- remember the DJ in the film Elvis Durante? That's a real dj! I remember they closed down The Taconic for the car chase. Probably 40 miles away from NYC
The panel truck that got flipped by the first bomb in the movie Atlantic Courier was the same brand that the Hans Gruber gang used in the first Die Hard.
I saw this when it came out in theaters as a kid, and I remember being amazed at how the Die Hard movies kept finding new ways to make the majority of police officers seem like Keystone Kops.
correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't actress Bonnie Bedelia offered the chance to reprise her role of Holly for this movie? I've heard rumors regarding this for decades, but haven't come across anything that confirms this.
That Viagra joke at the end was awesome. 😂 I did enjoy this installment of Die Hard, but I actually did like the second one too. One fact that could have been covered, and sure how you could do it without angering the RUclips censors, was the scene in Harlem with the sign which was how McClain and Zeus met. That scene was actually filmed in Harlem. But the sign was blank during filming, and the words were inserted in post production for safety reasons.
I saw it in the movie theatre when it came out. I thought it was great, although maybe 15 minutes too long. Gotta search it out to watch again! Thanks Minty, that was great ( and as ever, *great* intro graphics ! )
Die Hard With A Vengeance is hardcore and badass! That's why Die Hard 4.0 tried to replicate and went over the top to try and surpass the 3rd Die Hard movie.
I love the first, I love the third, but I still really love the 4th, Live Free or Die Hard. Justin Long and Timothy Olyphant were great and we saw an older McClane who hasn’t done anything like this in years but proves when needed he can kill them all.
God bless Bruce and his family. I saw this movie opening weekend and it was fun to watch with a crowd. Would loved to have seen one more Die Hard directed by John McTiernan to wrap up the franchise.
If you notice in the opening scene when the words " Die hard " appears it uses the 3 towers to the bridge for the Roman numerals 3 for die hard 3. But of course minty you didn't notice it even though the producer's etc put it right in front of us to see it's the 3rd Installment of the franchise.
Of all the Die hard movies, this is the best and my favorite. I remember walking near Central Park and seeing a prop of the taxi coming out of the park. This movie is non stop action. I can watch this movie again and again and never get bored.
I was 16 when this movie came to the dollar theater for a long run. My best friend & I saw DHWA six times, two of which were in the same day. It was a cheap something to do back then that was better than burn gas driving around. This was an ultra modern movie theater in 1992 or so then was switched over to a dollar theater when they took out the left half or the theaters to build out more strip mall shops. Sorry, memories just came flooding back. That friend passed away 2006 from static fibrosis which I knew he had from the day we became friends on the bus as 12 year olds.
This is by far my favorite of the series. It still does have some Christmas references with McClane saying he was looking for a fat jolly guy with 8 reindeer, and the shoplifter kid saying "all the cops are into something, it's Christmas you could steal city hall!"
I remember going to see this at the theater . Tickets were like 4.25 so making 366 mill is more impressive than todays market which tickets are 15 dollars plus
I absolutely loved that movie, was lots of fun. I agree with you, it does feel fresh take on the character and his story arc. The only thing I can imagine why people didn’t think so might be because of movie trend at the time.
I love all THREE "Die Hard" movies. I can't pick a favorite though. It's really great they ended this as a TRILOGY and didn't make any more movies under "Die Hard", because they would have really sucked ass, and then I'd just have to pretend they didn't exist.
Great video. The ‘not fresh’ criticism upon release was probably due to the fact that ‘Speed’ and ‘Blown Away’ came out within a year of Die Hard3. Critics were probably tired, this being the 3rd ‘mad bomber’ to come out. Love the movie, I watched it in the theater opening weekend. McTiernan’s commentary on the BluRay is worth listening to. Cheers
I watched Die Hard many times on TV, and on VHS while a kid, then got to watch Die Hard with a Vengeance in the movie theatre. Man, I was completly blown away. This movie is still a master piece. Excellent story. SLJ once again stole the show.
Here's another thing you didn't know, this time about the German version of the movie. Bruce Willis is voiced by German actor and voice actor Manfred Lehmann in almost all of his movies, including the Die Hard franchise, but he wasn't available for dubbing because he was busy with another production. So they replaced Manfred Lehmann with Thomas Danneberg, who is iconic among German movie lovers for lending his voice to many great stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, John Travolta, Terence Hill, Dan Aykroyd, Rutger Hauer, John Cleese, Nick Nolte, Adriano Celentano and the brothers Randy and Dennis Quaid.
The second die hard was my personal favorite, because they filmed part of it in my town. They were following the snow storm that was going through town. They didn't shoot it all on a sound stage back then. Under Siege was a rip of Die Hard. Funny.
I saw this movie alot on HBO in 1996. Jeremy Irons was awesome as Simon Gruber. Those riddles and puzzles were great. Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson had great chemistry.

I remember seeing this in the theater. Love all the Die Hard movies, some more than others, but still love them all.
One of the best movies ever. Period. I’ve seen it probably around a hundred times.
Great video minty keep making our days better !
When I'm not watching movies I love watching Mintys videos. Thank you Minty for all your fine work. Big fan here from 🇨🇦
Laurence Fishburne was originally supposed to play Powell in the original.
John McTiernan & Martin Campbell are two directors that should be given more movies
This movie has become my favorite in the franchise! It's the perfect Summer action movie. Got to see this classic in the theater on opening weekend.
I saw this with my mom in theatres! All I remember is the pulling of fuses from that Merc.
The water in the jugs always blew my mind even after watching it so many times 😂😂
Me top. I was a kid in the 90s and this movie was on cable almost every day
I’m glad it was because it was great
It took me a few viewings to figure out the water jug puzzle
You forgot #11 - John McClane is STILL wearing the same white/ brown shirt. Btw- remember the DJ in the film Elvis Durante? That's a real dj! I remember they closed down The Taconic for the car chase. Probably 40 miles away from NYC
The panel truck that got flipped by the first bomb in the movie Atlantic Courier was the same brand that the Hans Gruber gang used in the first Die Hard.
😂 nice ending minty the last 2min had me LOL while at work.
I saw this when it came out in theaters as a kid, and I remember being amazed at how the Die Hard movies kept finding new ways to make the majority of police officers seem like Keystone Kops.
I loved Last Action Hero!
correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't actress Bonnie Bedelia offered the chance to reprise her role of Holly for this movie? I've heard rumors regarding this for decades, but haven't come across anything that confirms this.
5:35 sooo, would that make John McClane a Disney prince in the UK? 😂
Facts: Die Hard With a Vengeance was released here in the Philippines as "Die Hard 3" in cinemas, and as "Die Hard 3: With a Vengeance" on TV.
That Viagra joke at the end was awesome. 😂
I did enjoy this installment of Die Hard, but I actually did like the second one too.
One fact that could have been covered, and sure how you could do it without angering the RUclips censors, was the scene in Harlem with the sign which was how McClain and Zeus met.
That scene was actually filmed in Harlem. But the sign was blank during filming, and the words were inserted in post production for safety reasons.
Didn’t know that. Not surprised they didn’t risk it though.
I may be alone here, but I LOVE the 2nd one. The first 3 are top tier films.
Saw this in the cinema 🎥🍿 and I loved it 🤩
I saw it in the movie theatre when it came out.
Because it's John McClain
Man now I gotta watch them all again. Thanks!
I love the first, I love the third, but I still really love the 4th, Live Free or Die Hard. Justin Long and Timothy Olyphant were great and we saw an older McClane who hasn’t done anything like this in years but proves when needed he can kill them all.
I miss Bruce Willis when he was an actor he was one of my favorite actors growing up I always wanted to be an actor like him.😊
I was NOT expecting that sign off 😂
God bless Bruce and his family. I saw this movie opening weekend and it was fun to watch with a crowd. Would loved to have seen one more Die Hard directed by John McTiernan to wrap up the franchise.
Also, best opening credits scene since The Naked Gun.
Good show Minty! I agree - it is a fun romp!
Just started watching recently, been going through your back catogue, enjoying every video keep it up
I was 16 when this movie came to the dollar theater for a long run.
Live Free or Die Hard needs to be reviewed by you next, Mintyyy!
This is by far my favorite of the series. It still does have some Christmas references with McClane saying he was looking for a fat jolly guy with 8 reindeer, and the shoplifter kid saying "all the cops are into something, it's Christmas you could steal city hall!"
One of the beat of them all
Die Hard 1&3 Are my favorite of the franchise! And it's to bad Bruce now has health issues! What a shame!
That ending...😂😂😂😂😂 dang it Minty 😂😂😂 you almost made me spit up coffee ☕ 😊
Die Hard 3: With a Vengence, best one out of the series in my opinion, second behind the first.
Zeus: "McClane... McClane... MCCLANE!!!!"
I love all THREE "Die Hard" movies. I can't pick a favorite though. It's really great they ended this as a TRILOGY and didn't make any more movies under "Die Hard", because they would have really sucked ass, and then I'd just have to pretend they didn't exist.
True...imagine one being based on Computers or one being called 'a good day to die hard'
I love Die Hard 1, 2, & 3. 3 is my favorite but 2 was great as well. 1 goes without saying. 🤷🏾♂️💯
I love that you caught the "Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo." Everyone misses that
Here's another thing you didn't know, this time about the German version of the movie.
Funny.
Thank you Bruce for some great films. We will remember it for you. 🫶
Excellent review Minty! Love the Die Hard series! Especially 1 & 3 !
Die Hard WAV is the definitely Die Hard movie for me. Absolutely legendary movie!!
