You sir, are a life-saver. I was troubleshooting for hours before I watched this video, I wish I had come across this sooner! My microphone was inconsistently crackling but only during the recording and playback - turns out all I needed to do was set my microphone to be my default.
One little tip that was driving me NUTS was that you have to go into your system settings > privacy and make sure that DaVinci Resolve has permission to use your mic. That little setting was turned on by default for GarageBand and Audacity, but not for DR. You won't get any audio at all if that little toggle isn't turned on.
Thank you! Your tip at 1:44 solved my immediate mic issues, muting the monitoring fixed another one, so I just watched the whole video. Keep up the great work :)
Hey Jason, I've finally had the reason to do a voice-over video. Your video was the first & only one I needed to learn how to set up D.R, & I had zero issues. All thanks to your comprehensive tutorial. Cheers Jay, you truly are The Man!
Sounds like the microphone is not properly patched onto your truck. I would go into the preferences and make sure your microphone settings are input device and then re-patch everything to your track and try it again.
Definitely a great helper Jason. Especially at 6:35 where your brought up 'REPRO' setting. I had been suffering from Ducking not working after the first project save. Setting to Repro seemed to solve it straight away. Thanks.
Jason, I LOVE YOU! thank you so much for this video, you saved me soooo much time and effort by making this video and helping me out with my first recordings. Blessings to you!!
Thanks man, I was going crazy because I had the right settings according to other videos, and I even closed and opened davinci, but it was still open in the background. after forcing a quit and restarting for real it works fine.
Now my Voice Over track in Fairlight won't arm to record. The button goes red when you click on it but goes off as soon as you release. I have the original test VO but want to keep recording until it's as I want it. Is there a re re-record option?
I would try repatching everything. Usually it won’t work because somethings wrong with the patch. If that doesn’t work, I would restart the program and try to repatch again.
You should try using the ADR tool. It will allow you to do multiple takes and then select the take that you want. I’ve got a whole video on the ADR tool.
@@JasonYadlovski That's great. I will check it out right now. Just watch your 'views' start to rise... Lol Excellent videos BTW. Easy to follow by pausing step by step. I paid £350 for FCPX and couldn't even figure how to organise the file system! Gave up and got DR for free and it felt intuitive.
Hi Jason Thanks for that comprehensive video. I did fix my sound format 48000 Hz with your help. But unfortunately it did not fix my issue. OKY In project setting that gear icon on right bottom just above the system clock under Fairlight => Bussing i checked the option "Use Fixed Bus Mapping" that fixed ALL.
Thanks for the video, it was very informative, however, it did not fix my issue of no input audio. What I found was under privacy and security, Divinci was disabled. Once enabled all is working! Thanks again for the video!
I have a question for you, I hope you have the answer. 😂😂😂 Running an up to date version of DR as of 15/11/2024 using a MacBook Pro with an intel chip. All settings are correct for my mic on the laptop (sample rate and security) and in DR preferences the mic is my main input (sample rate matching the Mac) I have patched the mic and I get level on the meters and monitoring. When I arm the channel to record and press record nothing is recording? It doesn’t even register as a place holder for corrupt audio or anything? Many thanks in advance 👍🏻
@ yessss! 😂😂😂 that fixed it, thank you so much. I knew it would be something simple. You’re a star, thank you 👍🏻 I’ll give you a shout out on my next vid. Thank you again.
i did a voiceover before and it worked perfectly, now when i try, the meters move, track is armed, but when i click record, the video plays but my audio is not being recorded. any ideas?
Did you double check the timeline view options to show the waveforms? If you don't see the meters moving, it could be because of the input monitoring options in the fairlight menu.
Need help from anyone. I did my voiceover and was rending the video when I accidentally turn off my pc. After rebooting, I re-opened DR and now I only hear audio out my left side headset and the wave form is only on my left side. So question is... How do I get the audio back to my right side or get the wave form again?
So...on DR18+...M2 Macbook Pro...Deity Vo-7U. All the settings seem right, Bus send, patch, DR sees Mic, mic selected in computer settings, input monitoring on auto, mic is on (I can hear it through headphones plugged into Mic), track us on R, but when I hit record...nothing. Meters on track aren't move, flat line on track, no audio....HELP!?
Maybe it’s the input monitoring settings in the Fairlight menu? If they’re set to mute, you wouldn’t see anything but you should still see waveforms. I would try a whole new project just to see if something was a little wacky with that project. I would also double check the file path in the project settings where the recording will be saved just to make sure, it’s in a location that’s writable. 🤔
@@JasonYadlovski so the test project the mic/recording worked as it should, odd, appears I did have the settings right. So now I may have to start my video edit of my new video over again (3/4 done) in order to get the VO to work…sigh.
Thank you Jason. I am having a problem when I try and record guitar directly into Resolve. Just doesn't capture the signal correctly. Interface sees the signal, sounds good on direct monitor. Works in Reaper but not in Resolve. Tried both of my 2 inputs. Thanks for all the video and insight.
@@JasonYadlovski I used a default project. Default Sample Rate is currently set at 48k. Sample rate on my Scarlett 2i2 is also 48k. Records my mic input without issue. Especially after changing that buffer setting you pointed out. I was having the same breakup as you demonstrated for V.O. This is just the guitar straight into the Scarlett, Instrument mode. Shows signal and passes sound through direct monitor. I haven't tried changing the sample rate. I get intermittent guitar. Just doesn't capture like a DI or normal record. If I open Reaper and use the exact same input it is working correctly in there. Kinda strange. I also tried both inputs on the Scarlett into Resolve and both didn't work.
Checked all points, mic selected in preference, patch done, ARM on and R is showing red but still i can see volume in meter and when press main record button then plain sound clip creates I spend whole 1 day to check everything but now i am furstrated if you can help then please let me know what could be solution
I went to do a voiceover and it won't work for me. When I hit the arm for record button it plays random audio repeatedly. There is no audio at all in my media pool. Any suggestions on what is going on? Thanks!
Hi! Sounds very strange, do you have any audio in another track? What do you mean it plays audio repeatedly? Like an echo or something completely different than anything in your timeline? If it's patch properly, armed to record and the record button is hit, it should record ok. When finished it should put the clip in the medial pool. If you are hearing echo, go to the fairlight menu and change the input monitoring settings.
@@JasonYadlovski it’s completely different than anything on my timeline. I restarted and it fixed it. 🤷♀️ it was still echoing so I muted bus 1 and it got rid of the echo. I need the new update that might be the issue. I have no idea. Thanks for advice.
I need your help. Ive tried EVERYTHING in this video, and still cant get any waveforms. im using a usb mic and its very frustrating. Dont know what im missing. Been going at it for 2 days now.
Can you hear the audio and just not see the way forms? Try selecting the clip, right click, go to click attributes, go to the audio section, look at your inputs for your channels, is one of the muted? If it is muted, change it, so that it’s either the second channel or matched the other one you see. That will cause you to hear audio, but not see any way forms.
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks for taking the time to troubleshoot. That seems all good, its not muted. its on Embedded channel 1 so thats good. For me I can see waveforms in voice the memos application for mac as well as speak into any other application requiring a mic and have had no issues. But when im in resolve, i cant see any monitoring and it doesn't record anything even though it allows me to patch it all correctly. Its very weird. Its the Jlab Go Talk2 usb c mic if that says anything. I also noticed that if the mic is unplug and i use my macbook mic, the same thing happens! I upgraded to 18.1.14 as well as checked if i had a mac update and no luck with all those steps.
Great video! This is my issue that I haven't been able to fix: I try to record my vo and it looks like its working fine so I hit stop and the moment I click anywhere the recording is now disappeared. I don't know if there's something like a "voice over testing" setting I may have accidentally triggered but that's the only thing I can think of because it looks like it's working until you click anywhere and it's gone. Anyone have a solution for this? I recorded an entire voice over for a video two weeks ago and it worked perfectly. Now I'm making another and the voice over feature isn't working :( Please help!
Was it recorded that way or does it just sound that way once it’s in DaVinci Resolve? If it was fine in the recording, and it’s only like in resolve, it could be a sample rate issue, a sample rate of the clip does not match the sample rate of the project. 🤔
@@JasonYadlovski recording straight into davinci . It has been fine previously but just decided to start skipping randomly recently. Any idea how to make sure they’re the same ? Sorry very basic questions much appreciated
If you are recording directly into Resolve, I'd assume the sample rate is 48K in there. You can check by going to the project settings, then Fairlight on the left. Then at the top of the window, you'll see the sample rate. This has to be set when the project is created and can't be changed once media is added to the project. Then, I'd check the computer settings for the microphone and make sure that's set to 48K as well. It may be a setting on the computer for the audio interface if you are using one as well. Other than that, I'm not sure why it would just start skipping randomly out of the blue....
everytime I press arm i hear a weird looping sound. What is this 😫 I feel like i'm going crazy. I also get a loud feedback sound when trying to record as well.
Make sure you use headphones, if you use speakers, there will be feedback. You can also go to Fairlight, then Input Monitor Style and change that to change the monitoring you're hearing.
You're welcome! Resolve works great for VO once you understand the process and how it works. Make sure to set the folder you want the files saved to so it dones't get lost. 😜
I’m not sure about the flashing R, but it sounds like you might need to patch the mic to both the right and left channels. Unless you have a mono track in that case you would only catch the microphone to the one mono channel.
Glad I found this video. Right now I'm having some issues with the Fairlight viewer freezing while I am recording narration and I have to stop recording so I have to redo my recording
I hope you’re able to get it working! You can always change some of the playback resolution options in the playback menu along the top of the screen, just so that Resolve will playback smoother while you’re recording.
@@JasonYadlovski I was able to fix it somewhat. I'm on a very old laptop and I ended up rendering my timeline at a low resolution video and importing that
For some reason davinci is showing me 8 separate inputs with the same name for my microphone but none of them will actually give any audio when patched... cant find any solutions online
Sometimes that happens, not sure why. Try selecting the first one. Also doublecheck the input settings for the computer in the computers sound settings and see what it's set to before opening Resolve.
I recorded my Voice Over. But whenever I apply TrackFX/Dial Leverage, I received this message "can't apply a trackFX to a channel with an input source". What happened? How to fix it?
Great overview. Recently, I had to go and reset some of the sounds settings in resolve when I got a new mic. Speaking of that when I plugged in the new mic windows recognized it, and it tested fine. When attempting to patch the mic in resolve, it showed no mic in the system. I needed to install a driver, after that resolve recognized the mic.
Hi Jason, I am having issues with this voice over stuff. I am using a Blue Yeti mic and to get anything to come thru I practically have to have my mouth on top of it. Are there mic settings that I need to look at? If I turn up the gain, which I have at almost zero it gives an echo. Any assistance would be grand thx
Hey! Yeah you can turn up the gain a little but you can also check the mic input settings on the computer. Also, use headphones to record if possible, you’ll get an echo if you use speakers and the mic picks it up. Here’s a video I made a while back about the yeti that might help: ruclips.net/video/NvfhsRSv4QE/видео.html
@@JasonYadlovski Thank you! I did find your video right after this post on the Yeti. I'll try the headset as well. Most likely my echo issue :) Thank you again didn't think of that.
Hi Jason, great video. But Ive got a really crazy problem. On Resolve 18 everyting worked well, but now by clicking Input to patch the mic there is no windows open to patch. Reinstall davinci and fairlight (moove it out by windows), install the neewest version. Restart the PC. but there's still no window for patch the mic. @@JasonYadlovski Thanks for your answer. yes i tried .The same. All windows moved, there are no hidden windows behind them, but late in the night I clicked on an unpatched Audio A2 on this R and it was automatically patched. Mine is doing the same thing as when you dont press arm for record, but I have armed it, but nothing is happening, as in the recording doesnt even start
what if you need to hear the original audio to perform a dubbing for example? As you mute your monitoring, you cannot do it. If you unmute your Monitoring, you get the latency. If you Any solution?
Hi. Great video! I wanted to solve a problem, and I tried everything you said, and it didn't help :( Im about to do a VoiceOver. I have patched the input with the track (im using a m audio fast track), It isn't recording any sound, even though I have R'ed the track, and also checked the output. And I have chosen the right fast track track. But there aren't coming any sound in. hmmm. annoying, but I have to keep on searching. Thanks a lot for your videos
I’ve never used audacity for Recording voice overs, I always use resolve. I have used reaper before and that works well. I’ve also use GarageBand in my screen recording program, Screenflow.
I have the problem that even though I have already patched the microphone and the audio track, when I activate the "R" the mixer bars do not register any sound. Someone who can help me with this.
You might want to go into the fairlight menu at the top and check your input monitoring settings. Depending on what they’re set at, you may not see any meters move at all.
My voicover crackles ... anyone solution? Also, in preferences, i can see my microphone, which is running over the apollo twin, und on the patch windows, it dont show up. So i have to use Voicemeter Potato, to create a virtual microphone. Maybe the crackle comes from that.
Also double check that your sample rate matches. For me, the default is 44K, but I change it to 48K in both my computer settings and in Resolve project settings.
Another great video. Ran my first ADR session and got good results but I could not get the record button to work properly. I was just finicky like I’d select my cue and hit the rehearse and it would turn red but it wouldn’t rehearse so I’d have to click off select another cue and back to the one I wanted then try again and maybe it would work the same thing would happen with the record function it would turn red but would not start or start the cue count down sometimes it would but 3/4 times it wouldn’t. Just had to try and try until it would. Loved the feature but made me look a little funny in front of my talent and I’m an audio guy so I’m no stranger to routing and what not. Was curious if you’ve seen this before. I’d also love to know what you think about this setup I’d like to had a recording booth with a monitor and headphones for my talent and I can be outside of the booth in a control room kind of capacity with a talkback, what would this setup look like hardware wise and in resolve? Couldn’t tell if I need a double headphone amp to plug into my interface headphone out so talent hears what I hear.
Amazing as per usual, but for the first time, I am still having issues ! I have done absolutely everything you have said. I get the meters showing fine, I have the input patching all good, I can hear myself without echo, I have my Audio Interface set up in the settings and on the Mac Studio. BUT IT STILL DOESN'T RECORD when I hit the Record button .. and yes, it is armed. This is driving me NUTS .. I will keep trying .. but it makes no sense why this wouldn't work, especially as the patching is clearly working. DAMN !!!! :(
Well I just created a new Timeline, and it all works, so I have no idea what is going on with the Timeline I have my Video on, and will just pull it all into this new Timeline. Something obviously is different, but I don't know what .. and I don't have time to find out :) thanks Jason as always !
@@JasonYadlovski it’s a weird one. I have a bug where I get no audio on a simple video, I turn the voice isolation on and off and it comes back and I’ve reported that to BM as others are experiencing it !
Thanks for the great videos! Hopefully you might be able to advise a solution to my problem. Mac Mini, DR 18, blue yeti mic. I had been running DR 17 on Mac mini with no issues. I plugged in the mic and it works fine in Audacity so I know the mic is working. When I attempt to use it in DR, I get nothing. I upgraded to DR 18. Still nothing. The mike shows up in the DR settings as the audio in and also patched to the audio track in Fairlight. From the mixer, I can see that the mic has been assigned to the extra audio track. However when I click the R button on the track, no audio levels are there and the gain is set appropriately on the mic. It seems like a simple fix (maybe) but I can't figure it out and its frustrating. Any help or advise is appreciated. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Hi! Thanks for checking out my videos! Did you try actually recording to see if it will record? If you arm the track to record, you may not see the meters move based on the setting you have chosen for the input monitoring. Go to the fair Lake menu at the top, down to input monitoring and try changing those options there. Hopefully it’s a simple fix like this.
@@JasonYadlovski I tried and still nothing. Th main issue people seem to have is the Mic simply not being recognized by DR. I don't have that problem as the Mic shows in preferences as well as the patch function. I always seem to be the guy who does a lot of work and then doesn't have a simple switch turned on or something. Any other suggestions? By the way, great videos and content. You rock.
@@BikeHedonia Bike, yes, Im happy to report that the MIC does indeed work. I had to go to the MAC security settings and "allow" the MIC to be used. So in upper left screen go to apple icon, system preferences, security & privacy, microphone, then click the app to "allow" Da Vinci to use MIC. Good luck and post back if it doesn't work, maybe we can walk you through it. I tried a lot of different tricks but this finally worked.

The channel is armed, everything is working perfect except that Davinci doesn't record. Any ideas?
Have you double checked the path where the recordings are being stored? It's in the project settings. Also maybe try a brand new project and see if it works.
I figured a lot of it out, read the manual and watched Casey Faris! 😜 Casey was pretty much the only one with videos on Resolve when I got started. That's why I started making videos - when I figured out basic things that I couldn't find any videos on.
As far as Premiere or Resolve, either are great. Major benefits to Resolve are it crashes less and it's a 1 time fee for the studio version...plus you can use the free version for as long as you want. I did for a long time before upgrading. Benefits to Premiere is that there are more 3rd party assets specifically for premier since it's been around a long time. More stuff is becoming available for Resolve though. For me the biggest reason I went with Resolve over Premiere is because I didn't want to pay a monthly fee for another program. 😁
You video is great. My problem (I am new to Resolve), the 'S' button was not pressed. I have no clue what it does. When it is not-pressed, it shows it records, yet no audio at play time. So the 'S' button in addition to the 'R' button had to be pressed for it to work for me. Thanks for the additional information!
Hello, thanks for the video, for some reason I have not been able to record the voice with the integrated microphone or with an external microphone, I have already configured it from the system preferences in DaVinci resolve as in the iMac configuration and nothing, I have the version Free I don't know if this may be the problem, could you help me to know what the problem is? I have recorded von in the IMOVIE program for Mac and I had no problem, it worked perfectly with the integrated mic as well as with the external one, thank you very much for your help!
Try closing resolve, then making sure the mic is set in the system settings. Are you getting any signal in Resolve? You may want to check the sample rates of the mic in the system settings as well as in Resolve. They should match.
Hello, Jason! I have a problem with Rode USB+ together with DaVinci 18. I did EVERYTHING what you explain in your video, but my microphone still doesn't catch the voice((( I am super frustrating.. What is happening, I don’t see anything moving on the Mixer at the moment of arming, it looks dead.. I checked many times, patching is right. When I press Record, I can see the red line showing recording, but after I finished, there no sound.. zero. Looks like DaVinci not catching sound from microphone. I checked 3 microphones I have, all have the same problems. I really don't know what to do, cause I had watched all existing tutorials, had tried everything but I got no result at all.. Do you have any idea what can I do else??
Goddammit! I solved it! And it was so simple.. still nobody mention it. You have to go to the System settings - Privacy and Security - Microphone - and there check if DaVinci has access to your microphone. In my case it was OFF.
What worked for me - Davinci Resolve > Preferences > Video and Audio I/O > I/O Engine ... change from system audio to ASIO... I made sure to download that latest english ASIO drivers (ASIO4ALL) and updated my Geforce Experience drivers... My PC specs are Ryzen 9 3950x CPU, MSI 2070 super GPU, 64GB RAM, Windows 10 OS... and the Audio Interface I am using is the Focusrite 6i6 2nd generation... and I also have downloaded the Focusrite Control app... then I made sure my sample rates all match and I am on 48khz on the Interface and I went to system settings on my interface I have it set to "2 channel, 24 bit, 48000 Hz (studio quality)" I am also using a 6ft USB cable from amazon and an XLR microphone shure sm58 dynamic mic.
That was very useful. I've been recording externally to a Zoom H8 and importing the tracks manually. Knowing how to record directly in Fairlight is a huge time saver. Especially when using the H8 as an USB audio interface.
Everyone has similar video but no one has the explanation why when I set everything up and I press record the line moves but no track no waveform nothing it looks like its jut playing not recording....
I wonder if the external drive you've got is too slow maybe? I always record to an external drive and it works good for me. I am using an SSD connected via either usb 3 or thunderbolt.
@@JasonYadlovski I hope this comes out the way I mean it but, there is absolutely NO NEED to thank me ... in fact, I should be thanking YOU 😁.... I keep getting an echo in my voiceovers in Resolve 17, not a room echo but through the mic.. if I record using Audacity it's not there just in Resolve 17. any advice?
Hi again, I have a question. When I use clips from my iPhone and do voiceovers the playback is fine. But as soon as I add a screen-recorded clip on my mac, the audio gets really choppy. I've watched many videos but none have solved the problem. Both my iPhone and my screen recorded clip are at 60 fps, and the timeline frame rate and playback frame rate are at 60 fps. Most YT video solutions are to check the playback frame rate, but mine is already set to the correct fps. Do you have any idea of what the problem could be? Appreciate it. /Philip
My guess would be that your computer doesn’t have enough power to run everything at 60 frames per second. I have an M1 Mac mini and when I try to use the timeline with high frame rates, things get sluggish. Are you using the free version or the studio version? The studio version would run it better than the free version. Especially if you have a GPU. You can also try the things I mentioned in this video to help make playback smoother. ruclips.net/video/9R47o6kZrDU/видео.html
Nice video - was not having any specific problems, but being fairly new to Davinci I was unaware of some of the setting options, so thanks! Off topic- I do videos for my classes. How do you set up the chapter links that show up on the right?
All you have to do is list out your chapters in the description of the video. Start with your first one being 0:00 (title). Once you have that first one you just list the time codes below it with your title. Scroll down in the description of this video and you should see how I did it.
unfortunately the arm [R] does not work as it refuses to switch on. it also does not recognise yeti microphone and only the MacBook original microphone.
The track won’t arm to record because the mic isn’t patched. If it’s not seeing your yeti, you probably need to go into Preferences, system at the top, video and audio I/O on the left, and then make sure that the yeti is set as your input device. Then go back into fairlight and try to re-patch everything, it should work then.
hi jason, thanks for the vid it really helps me as a complete noob, however, i'm still getting lots of noise when i tried tor record myself after put out all the settings that you mentioned, is it probably because i use my internal mic ? should i get an external mic?
An external mic that is close to you would be the best. You also have to make sure your recording environment is good too - the quieter the better and the least amount of reverb/echo is best.
tried everything. all the settings are correct as per in the video. but still its not working. recording inprogress but its not recording and waveform not moving
Sounds like maybe it’s a problem with the microphone being connected to the computer. I would close everything down, hook up your microphone and make sure your computer sees it and it’s set as the input in your computer settings. Then open up Davinci resolve, go into the project settings and set the microphone as the input, then going to Fairlight re-patch everything, then arm your track to record, hit the record button and hopefully it will work for you.
Double check the patch, arm the track, check the record location and that the mic is set as the input in preferences. Those are the most common problems.
Hi Jason I'm exporting a short for a festival and the 5.1 audio I got sent to me is louder than what the audio guy set the limiter to in premiere. Since I started with creating a timeline with a steroid track. Then importing the xml from premiere. Deleted all 40 ish audio tracks from the xml. Put in the 5.1 audio track from the audio guy. The problem is that the audio louder than his limiter. Sure I can fix it with a new limiter in DVR. But I rather get this right. Will check the buses now and see if something is off there. Do you have a video on this?
Update. I did find the problem. I had the bus 1 (main out) set as stereo. Im guessing it maps it wrong and merging channels so they get a little hotter. But once i set it to 5.1 everything lined up as supposed. It was 2 in the morning got the problem this morning. A few hours sleep helps. Cheers!
Awesome, glad you figured it out! I do not have a video about that specific kind of situation. I don’t really use anything from Premier and most of my projects nowadays are relatively simple. Thanks for the reply!
@@JasonYadlovski Have you exported a dcp with 5.1 sound. Still waiting for the final 5.1 audio. But it comes in from premiere as on mov file with 6 channels. OMG, thank you! I gave up on that ages ago when I was running into that, and gave up and used Audacity to record my voice, then bringing it in to Resolve. (worked fine, but a nuisance)

So strange, have you tried creating a new project, tried different methods of importing the file? So strange, it should work, worst case maybe try reinstalling it.

Thank you! Your tip at 1:44 solved my immediate mic issues, muting the monitoring fixed another one, so I just watched the whole video. Keep up the great work :)
Awesome, that’s great! Thank you for watching!
I was experiencing huge echo/feedback, and your video helped me to fix it by selecting the Input Monitoring to MUTE. Thank you so much!
Awesome you’re welcome!
2 hours looking for this on you tube!!!! thanks so much, you saved me with the last part of the video!!!
Glad I could help!
Hey Jason, I've finally had the reason to do a voice-over video. Your video was the first & only one I needed to learn how to set up D.R, & I had zero issues.
All thanks to your comprehensive tutorial.
Cheers Jay, you truly are The Man!
Awesome! Glad the video helped! 😁👍
Once again, your problem-solving videos are GREAT!!!
Thanks! Glad it's helpful!
5:13 I tried all the input monitor style but when i click R and record button my meters still not working
Thanks.
Great!
Jason, I LOVE YOU! thank you so much for this video, you saved me soooo much time and effort by making this video and helping me out with my first recordings. Blessings to you!!
Awesome, glad the video was helpful! 😁
thank you so much dude. working now. haven't been able to edit with voiceovers for weeks now. wish I'd seen this sooner
Glad it’s working!
Aaaah being the first to comment on your video Jason is a great pleasure. Thanks for the great video.
Awesome! Thanks for checking out the video! 😁👍
Thanks man, I was going crazy because I had the right settings according to other videos, and I even closed and opened davinci, but it was still open in the background. after forcing a quit and restarting for real it works fine.
Glad I could help!
this is a brilliant guide that actually solves hard to identify problems in BMD DVR!
Thanks and thank you for watching!
Nailed it. Buffer size 5 Many Thanks, I would have never found that.
Awesome!
Thanks Jason, I usually have 20takes to get a perfect voice over. This is going to be a long one if I have to repatch.. Lol
You should try using the ADR tool. It will allow you to do multiple takes and then select the take that you want. I’ve got a whole video on the ADR tool.
@@JasonYadlovski That's great. I will check it out right now. Just watch your 'views' start to rise... Lol
Excellent videos BTW. Easy to follow by pausing step by step.
I paid £350 for FCPX and couldn't even figure how to organise the file system! Gave up and got DR for free and it felt intuitive.
Awesome, I hope my videos can help you along the way! 😁👍
Running an up to date version of DR as of 15/11/2024 using a MacBook Pro with an intel chip.
All settings are correct for my mic on the laptop (sample rate and security) and in DR preferences the mic is my main input (sample rate matching the Mac)
I have patched the mic and I get level on the meters and monitoring. When I arm the channel to record and press record nothing is recording? It doesn’t even register as a place holder for corrupt audio or anything?
Many thanks in advance 👍🏻
Hey! Did you check the record path for the recording? It's in the project settings. Maybe Resolve can't write there?
@ I’ll check and let you know, thanks for the reply. Loving your vids btw. Very helpful 👍🏻
@ yessss! 😂😂😂 that fixed it, thank you so much. I knew it would be something simple. You’re a star, thank you 👍🏻 I’ll give you a shout out on my next vid. Thank you again.
Thanks Jason. This was super helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you SO much for this troubleshooting video!!!
You're welcome!
i did a voiceover before and it worked perfectly, now when i try, the meters move, track is armed, but when i click record, the video plays but my audio is not being recorded. any ideas?
Maybe the input monitoring settings? If the meters are moving, when the track is armed, it should work. Try a restart too. Hope you got it working!
Jason, Thank very much for your video. I have the problem that I do not see the wave signal, even I followed all you guildlines. Please help.
Did you double check the timeline view options to show the waveforms? If you don't see the meters moving, it could be because of the input monitoring options in the fairlight menu.
It was auto@@JasonYadlovski
Great video, you helped me again, this time with my voice over problem. My number 1 go too. Thank you.
Awesome, glad I can help!
Nice Video, exactly what I looking for my next Video thx Jason
You’re welcome!
Need help from anyone. I did my voiceover and was rending the video when I accidentally turn off my pc. After rebooting, I re-opened DR and now I only hear audio out my left side headset and the wave form is only on my left side. So question is... How do I get the audio back to my right side or get the wave form again?
You can change the track to a mono track and that should do it. If for some reason it doesn’t work, use the stereo fixer effect and that should work.
@@JasonYadlovski greatly appreciate it. I had ended up fixing right I sent the message but grateful for the response 💯🔥
@@JasonYadlovski input settings are on auto…but I’ll try a test project to see if that makes a difference.
Very strange.....let me know how you make out.
@@JasonYadlovski so the test project the mic/recording worked as it should, odd, appears I did have the settings right. So now I may have to start my video edit of my new video over again (3/4 done) in order to get the VO to work…sigh.
Well at least its working now....😬
Thank you Jason. I am having a problem when I try and record guitar directly into Resolve. Just doesn't capture the signal correctly.
Interface sees the signal, sounds good on direct monitor. Works in Reaper but not in Resolve.
Tried both of my 2 inputs. Thanks for all the video and insight.
Hey! What are you getting when you record into resolve? Are you recording just the Guitar? Is the project at 44.1k for audio only?
That's strange, I'm not sure how to fix it without playing around with it a bit....
@@JasonYadlovski Thank you Jason. I’ll continue to explore if I stumble on the solution I’ll share it!!
Another reason why it's not recording a waveform could be that the capture location (in project settings) isn't set correctly. I had the same problem.
i have it armed for record, i've got everything patched properly, my monitoring is on auto and i still see no meters :(
My guess is that somethings not patched properly.
@@JasonYadlovski but it is 😩 it was literally working two days ago, i didn’t change anything.. came back to do another VO and no meters lol
Try a new project file. You can always copy stuff over.
Checked all points, mic selected in preference, patch done, ARM on and R is showing red but still i can see volume in meter and when press main record button then plain sound clip creates I spend whole 1 day to check everything but now i am furstrated if you can help then please let me know what could be solution
Maybe double check the location that Resolve is trying to save to? Maybe there's an issue there since everything else seems to work ok.
Jason, you are great!! thanks 🙏
Happy to help!
Haven’t had to record from mic yet, but these were great tips.
👍
I found the settings as you wanted me to set... even after the update.... so perhaps in the past... who knows?
Man you are so full of energy. Inspiring!
Thanks! 😁
my audio works when I first patch it, then after 5 minutes of no use it discconects and I have to do the whole process over again???? HELP
What kind of mic are you using? It shouldn’t disconnect if the mic stays on and plugged in…🤔
I need your help.
Need to update my version and when I looked at the setting they were default at 5 but had to choose my input device.. No issues now
Awesome, glad you got it working.
Any help or ideas for audio randomly clipping clicking and skipping?. Driving me crazy
@@JasonYadlovski thank you bro
Thanks so much for the checklist. I'm going to need it. I've just been recording my VO's in QuickTime as a work-around.
You're welcome! Resolve works great for VO once you understand the process and how it works. Make sure to set the folder you want the files saved to so it dones't get lost. 😜
when i hit arm for record, it flashes red before turning back off instantly
also i can only hear myself from my left ear
I’m not sure about the flashing R, but it sounds like you might need to patch the mic to both the right and left channels. Unless you have a mono track in that case you would only catch the microphone to the one mono channel.
@@JasonYadlovski it worked, thank you
What is bus? I am really confused. do you have any video on it. please help

thanks man i had an issue with the new patch and i fixed itb thank you sm!
Awesome, you’re welcome!
how do you fix the audio track not arming? When I click to arm, it automatically deselects.
That probably means the mic isn’t patched properly.
That's strange, maybe try making sure the track is not armed to record and that the microphone isn't selected as an input?
Great overview. Recently, I had to go and reset some of the sounds settings in resolve when I got a new mic. Speaking of that when I plugged in the new mic windows recognized it, and it tested fine. When attempting to patch the mic in resolve, it showed no mic in the system. I needed to install a driver, after that resolve recognized the mic.
Awesome, thanks or sharing your experience!
(There is a Timeline in my video ;) This now do not work at all my saved projects.Whats going on? Any idea how to fix it? Thanks
Have you tried looking in the Fairlight menu and opening the patch there? Sometimes that window can get hidden behind other windows.
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks for your answer. yes i tried .The same. It has never been done like this before. This is possible with any audio. I am very confused.
Not sure what might be going on there...🤔
Mine is doing the same thing as when you dont press arm for record, but I have armed it, but nothing is happening, as in the recording doesnt even start
what if you need to hear the original audio to perform a dubbing for example? As you mute your monitoring, you cannot do it. If you unmute your Monitoring, you get the latency. If you Any solution?
You could try adjusting the latency settings, that might help.
Thank you so much for this

all very nice but my problem is that the arm for record simply doesn´t work
It's probably a patching or input problem I'd think.
Hi. Great video! I wanted to solve a problem, and I tried everything you said, and it didn't help :(
Im about to do a VoiceOver.

Audacity vs Fairlight thoughts? I still need to get my mic to connect to the computer instead of recording on a separate device
I’ve never used audacity for Recording voice overs, I always use resolve. I have used reaper before and that works well. I’ve also use GarageBand in my screen recording program, Screenflow.
@@JasonYadlovski oh awesome! It would be nice to cut out a middleman and just do everything in resolve
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks for your answer. Both are already on 48K.
It could also be interference or a bad cable. I find if my cell phone is too close to my audio interface it creates static and cracking.
Awesome, glad you figured it out! Yeah sometimes just creating a new timeline or new project fixes the problem. Don't know why that happens.
@@JasonYadlovski If you don’t mind me asking how did you learn Davinci resolve?
And do you think davinci resolve will be better than Premier pro
Hey! The 'S' button is the solo button - it will play audio from only the soloed track or tracks.
@@JasonYadlovski odd, with it not pressed, it is the channel I can not hear.
@RiverExplorerGames it could be the input monitoring settings in the Fairlight menu, it may be muted or something when you’re recording
Wow. Fantastic tut!!

Perfect, there you go! Thanks for sharing!
Nice, thanks for sharing!
That was very useful. I've been recording externally to a Zoom H8 and importing the tracks manually. Knowing how to record directly in Fairlight is a huge time saver. Especially when using the H8 as an USB audio interface.
Nice, thanks for sharing your workflow. The zoom H8 sounds awesome.
i followed every step and it did record but no sound waves for some reason. Im using AMD microphones
Did it record audio? You might just have to turn on the waveforms if you do in fact have sound.....
Everyone has similar video but no one has the explanation why when I set everything up and I press record the line moves but no track no waveform nothing it looks like its jut playing not recording....
I figured it out If you are using an External SSD it might not work you need you set your audio to save in your Internal storage
I wonder if the external drive you've got is too slow maybe? I always record to an external drive and it works good for me. I am using an SSD connected via either usb 3 or thunderbolt.
@@JasonYadlovski Thank You Jason I will try it
Another excellent, helpful tutorial - thanks so much Jason 🙏
Thanks Gary! I appreciate you always checking out my videos! 😁👍
@@JasonYadlovski I hope this comes out the way I mean it but, there is absolutely NO NEED to thank me ... in fact, I should be thanking YOU 😁....
Your channel literally rocks AND you learn something along the way too (sorry for shouting 🙄🤦♂️🤣).
Keep on keeping on sir - ya gotta fan here (and 56.5K more 😉)
NO INPUT levels with dozens of configuration options, I open Ableton Live and everything works, Fairlight I'm getting nothing
You can adjust the input levels in the path settings. I do agree, Fairlight can still add some tools for audio work. 😁👍
I keep getting an echo in my voiceovers in Resolve 17, not a room echo but through the mic.. if I record using Audacity it's not there just in Resolve 17. any advice?
Is the echo in the recording? Or just in the monitoring? There shouldn't be any echo in the recording from what I've seen...🤔
@@JasonYadlovski seems to be in both oddly enough
Are you using headphones to record or might the mic be picking up the speakers?
@@JasonYadlovski no headphones will that help? Its just weird if I use Audacity it doesn't do it..
I would try headphones. Are you sure the sample rate on the computer matches the sample rate in Resolve?
life saver!!!
@@JasonYadlovski Thank you, I got a Macbook pro but not one of the M models. I will try running it on another computer as well.
Nice video - was not having any specific problems, but being fairly new to Davinci I was unaware of some of the setting options, so thanks! Off topic- I do videos for my classes. How do you set up the chapter links that show up on the right?
Thanks! Are you talking about the chapter links for RUclips?
@@JasonYadlovski Yes - the chapter links that show up on the rhs.
@@JasonYadlovski Thankyou for your reply.
Thank you very much for all usefull info
You're welcome!
hi jason, thanks for the vid it really helps me as a complete noob, however, i'm still getting lots of noise when i tried tor record myself after put out all the settings that you mentioned, is it probably because i use my internal mic ? should i get an external mic?
An external mic that is close to you would be the best. You also have to make sure your recording environment is good too - the quieter the better and the least amount of reverb/echo is best.
I did everything and I still do not have any audio recording. The mic is patched. I can record directly to windows but not resolve.
There's gotta be a setting off somewhere. Did you check the sample rates? Also the location you are recording to? 🤔
@@JasonYadlovski I did. I have a file in that location but there is no sound. It just records a blank file. If I record to audacity it works fine.
tried everything. all the settings are correct as per in the video. but still its not working. recording inprogress but its not recording and waveform not moving
@@JasonYadlovski thank you . will try it. im using just a normal basic microphone. maybe thats an issue ?
The type of microphone shouldn’t matter as long as your computer sees it and you’re able to select it as an input.
@@JasonYadlovski i think thats the issue. davinci not showing the mic in the input box
I click record
but it is doesn't work help me please!
Double check the patch, arm the track, check the record location and that the mic is set as the input in preferences. Those are the most common problems.
I will try one more time ;) @@JasonYadlovski
Is it possible to name each voiceover track? The reason why I'm asking is because I do so many takes that sometimes I forget which one is what.😂
Yes, you can name the track and then the recording will have the same name as the track after it's recorded.
@@JasonYadlovski thank you so much!!! ✌️
Sir My microphone is boya m1. I changed all settings but not working. Mic is working in windows. and also use in watsapp. Please help me
Hey! Are you trying to record with the mic? If you are, you'll need to patch it.
what if the Arm To Record button wont click
I would double check that everything is patched properly. You should be able to turn it on assuming everything is good to go.
I see some videos where they split them to mono channels and rempa them in davinci. But I think you only should have to do this if you get the 6 channels as separate files.
I did not have to do much with the 5.1 audio. Worked good.
OMG, thank you!
I gave up on that ages ago when I was running into that, and gave up and used Audacity to record my voice, then bringing it in to Resolve. (worked fine, but a nuisance)
You’re welcome! 😁👍
Love you bro
Thanks man!
Interesting. I updated my Davinci Resolve as well and settings stayed same. Maybe you got some strange upgrade glitch.
Yeah it was weird but at least now I know another thing to check if I have issues. 😁👍
still have no idea why my microphone isn't showing up in davinci. It's only registering my headset mic, but I want to use my stand alone hyperX mic that I have
Can you unplug the headset? Also make sure the hyperx is set as the default on your system before you open Resolve.
@@JasonYadlovski that fixed it! Thanks so much!
Great!
Well uhm..................I can get my microphone patched to to the voice-over track. But after arming the track I seen no movement on meters and it is not recording, no red bar etc. I selected right microphone in MACOS system settings and also in DR preferences.. But no recording. I now run out of options. I tried different microphones too. And yes, DR is allowed in privacy settings to use the microphone.
Also double check the recording location is set to a spot that's accessible and check in the fairlight menu - input monitoring settings......
@ Thanks for your reaction. I will not tell you what I did wrong. I would publicly make a fool of myself. After the fact I can laugh about it.
Since I've updated my resolve to 17.4.6 I am not able to import any mp3 files at all. Can anyone please help me out with that?
So strange, have you tried creating a new project, tried different methods of importing the file? So strange, it should work, worst case maybe try reinstalling it.
For those who set eveything and can hear the mice but there is no waveform while recording (nothing, not even the red thing) - update your cache settings! It took me 2 hours to figure it out ;|
Thanks for sharing what worked for you!
