I needed this info perfect timing. Thanks for sharing. I use the Volt 1 from Universal Audio and I love it for recording into Resolves Fairlight Page. This helped a lot as far as understanding RUclips Loudness.

Look into a technique called 'ducking"
@@MakerMinded I mean more like when in a vlog there is a person talking and then a clip with say a timelapse with music, I would like to normalize the audio of the two

Awesome and super comprehensive tutorial! Will safe me so many nightmares! I haven't checked yet and will be curious to see how to bounce multiple tracks together.. Or is this a one-off step for each track in the mix (e.g. for multiple track with spoken word)?
I was already using your older recommendation on normalization, but with this RUclips preset it got just a little easier still..

Great stuff, although I don't do VoiceOver much (or at all) the final part with post-processing really was useful. What I really need to do though is to separate my audio channels on recording, since I do mostly gaming videos and right now my audio interface is connected to the pc I do gaming on, while I record on my stream/encoder PC meaning I only have one channel for all audio sent from the gaming pc. And although I have set up the audio levels to be good for streaming, it might not be perfect for video later.

When gain staging (setting input gain), the best approach is to "get excited" and make sure THAT level is around -6db, then you never have to worry about levels being too hot or too low.

What screen capture software are you using showing your keystrokes? Thats a great feature.
Love your take on this, sir! For me, as a professional VO artist slogging away in the middle of market (I'm a corporate VO utility player!) once I picked up an RCP 2 I never looked back. I record to this poor person's Apollo, with a low pass filter and light de-essing and compression, and never a dropped frame. This gives me a head start when I get to processing the file in Davinci Resolve. (I came from a video background, so I never picked up the Reaper or Studio One habit like most others in VO!) I edit, get rid of any mouth noise and the like with iZotope RX, work in my personal corrective EQ with Fairlight's stock plugin and what I like to call my "boost to clarity" via an SSL 4000g plugin. Dynamics only if needed, then mix in any sfx or other sound design that the client needs. Then mixdown and normalization. If I know my client is just going to slap it onto a video headed straight for social media, I'll aim for -17 LUFS/-1.5 dBTP (I find it preserves some dynamic range there), otherwise it's -23 LUFS and a minimum of 7 or 8 dB of headroom.
P.S. This has become my standard practice for videos, podcasts, and remixing livestreams, too.
Wish it included a music track as well since that would require different compression/normalisation techniques

btw I am struggling to understand how to balance my VO with my music and other audio tracks in a Davinci project, and then performing steps 4 and 5 from this video tutorial. Should I do what you have suggested with the VO track at -18dB, and then balance this against my music tracks etc, and then finally bounce them all to a new track and normalise it?
Maybe a new tutorial video showing this is what the doctor is ordering. I think a lot of people here would benefit from a follow-up advanced tutorial showing all audio tracks and your process - especially going by the comments here already. Thanks in anticipation!
I think he's got a video on that topic already, but yes basically you balance the different audiotracks, and then you bounce the tracks to a new track and normalize

I do have some side questions if you have the time: Is your room sound-proofed behind your mic? I have followed countless tutorials on mic setup (I have the Blue Snowball Ice) and even more tutorials on audio processing (I'm an electrical engineer so have a good understanding of High/Low pass signal filtration) - Irrespective of my efforts I can never get my audio sounding crisp and deep like most other RUclipsrs.
How much of it is really do with your equipment and the space of recording?

Thanks as always, Chadwick! I use my Zoom F6 as my audio interface. DaVinci accepts the 32-bit float input, but only creates a 24-bit file. Since Blackmagic listens to you, please ask them for this feature enhancement... thanks!
I use pro q3 and wave's L1 and rvox,
Vocal rider, ns1, wave's meter, gw voicecentric.
Agreed: don't try to hit -14 LUFS with just a voiceover. It can be done but the track will have to be so compressed and limited that it's unpleasant to listen to. Yours is at -18 LUFS for this video and that's perfect for longer content.

Can someone explain to me why he bounced the audio to a new track? He applied the effects on the original track so isn't it already applying what he has done? I'm wondering why he wouldn't just apply the dialogue leveler, then normalize the track, and then apply the limiter all on the first audio track and have it be the same? If it's too combine music and such into one track, isn't that going to affect the limiter and normalization as it may not boost the voice over up if the music is too loud in parts?
Great question. Generally I apply the normalization to an entire mix. However, this is still useful to bounce and bake in the leveler and voice isolation because of the order of operations. Clip level operations happen before track level. I like to use those fx in the track. Hope this helps.

Thanks for another great tutorial Chadwick. I edit in a small box room or on the road so acoustics are often a problem. Haven't played with the voice isolation as yet. Does it remove echo? Also what would be your recommendation for a vo mic?
Great channel. Very helpful. Struggling with a delay when recording my VO. If I’m monitoring the output from my interface it seems I hear the live track in the interface and the return recording coming back in with the other music. I found your video and found the input monitor style and thought that would do it. Changed to record, but still get the echo delay when recording.
Most interfaces have a direct monitor button or switch on them. This is how you can monitor your vo without latency. Hope this helps. Also makes sure to turn off speakers in your room to avoid sending anything back into the mic than your voice.
@@CreativeVideoTips thanks!! Actually watched one of your videos on this as well!! I’m using the Rode StreamerX. I can’t seem to find a direct monitor option. The Streamer X might not be the best application for this. I looked at several Scarletts that have that button right on the front.

Which speaker do you actually use in your editing suite?
I use old KRK Rockets for my speakers. But honestly, they are not my favorite. So I mostly use my high end Beyerdynamic open-back headphones.
I get your -18dB gain staging tip and raise it in post, but with that you’ll also raise the noise floor. For voice over you can definitely set the gain a lot higher. If you shout during a ‘professional’ voice over, you should re-think ‘professional’.
Otherwise, great video, great tips!
The noise floor of the room doesn’t change if it’s turned up on the gain knob or in post. What matters is the distance of the voice from the mic. This is a big misconception. Get the voice close to the mic and you’re good.
However you are right that it’s not common to shout into a mic, but it does happen inadvertently when people get excited.
@@CreativeVideoTips true. But I’m not talking about the room’s noise. That has nothing to do with the ‘noise floor’. That’s ambient noise.
I’m talking mic and pre-amp noise.
If you set gain low and raise levels in post, that noise will raise with it
@@Sebas51137 Equipment these days is way, way quieter than it used to be. The signal from a $250 mic and a $120 interface recorded with lots of headroom at 24/48 should be good for tons of gain afterwards without introducing any audible noise.

This video is a killer! I've referred to it repeatedly on my last three RUclips uploads. But I'm a little confused about something - when you showed the limiter, you only selected one clip, and I was wondering if and how you can use the limiter for the whole track?
Also, I was wondering what happens if you don't combine the clips like you showed in the video, before using the limiter? It wasn't obvious to me as you described it.
I didn't even know you could record in DR, how to you watch one timeline and record on another? I guess missed something somewhere.

Do you recommend the dialogue leveler for multiple speakers on separate microphones? I’m wondering if it would raise the other voices that are quiet in the background?
It seems to have some sort of gate built in so if the non primary voice is not above some level, say -30db it won’t touch it. It’s for sure the first thing I’d try.
Another great video. QUESTION: I got a little confused at around 12:00. Are you suggesting doing the mix-down before normalization on a Track basis or on a Timeline basis? I understand NOT on a clip basis. You say to do it with all the music, dialogue, Effects, etc but then say to select the track. I try to follow you step by step in your tutorials and have learned so much but got confused on this part. Mix-down the entire timeline then normalize or mis-down each track, then what? Thanks

If I enable Track FX, I can't record my voice. So I have to apply Track FX after I am finished recording the voiceover?
When I try to bounce the audio track it's giving me an error of "no intervals", does anyone have a solution for that? 😕

I read through the comments but didn't see an answer to the following question. If I record VO in mono, should I make the track itself stereo so it comes out of both ear buds? I am confused between recording in mono but track in stereo? Thanks for the great channel and informative videos.
good question - you want your track to also be mono. If you vo is recorded mono and your track is also mono you will hear it in both ears equally. Then your final output will be a stereo bus.
ive seen a couple other sources say you don't want to go higher than -6dbfs for youtube to leave room for their integrated normalization
But you seem to suggest -1
have you heard of that recommendation before?
You go through the stuff pretty fast and it’s very hard to see your cursor as it moves around. Maybe you should try getting one of those pens and drawing little circles and where you’re actually clicking things that would help. I don’t think you’re wrong on anything I just think it’s way too fast, especially if we’re trying to see some small cursor or so you might talk about the part of the USB mic first there are more and more high-quality USB mics out there and if you’re mad that until the end that’s not good.
I have done all of that and it still it will not record; the meter doesn't even register. Also set the recording device (I've tried 2 different ones) to 48k, made it the default both in Windows and in Resolve preferences. Tried everything and it will not record. Using Beta 19 Studio and Windows 10 64 bit. Very frustrating.
QQ: i see my microphone register sounds on my macbook pro system settings for input yet when i arm my a2 track to record additional VO on same track i recorded on yesterday, the dVinci sound bars arent registering sound. As if that track is muted? Ive tried recording a few times but no sound - help me Obi Wan... youre my only hope! 😢
(The gain stage of my mic in davinci resolve, even though patched isn't registering sound)
