- I have another confession to make; I didn't like this duel. I'm sorry to all fans of this duel. I don't mean to insult anyone, just to explain my view and encourage a more critical view of one of the most popular lightsaber duels.
The sad thing is I have actually walked into a closed door before

I think what’s so appealing about your channel is that you are calm and level headed while also seeing and understanding other people’s point of view. And I can Guarantee if you made a video about ahsoka being the bestest you would have a lot more subs 😒. I also think it’s really cool on how you respond to people’s comments

I love the fencing knowledge you bring into your critiques! The way you break the fight down and reveal the problems with it is really interesting. :)
I haven't seen Rebels yet, so I don't really have my own opinion to offer about this duel, but I think I'd probably prefer a slightly longer one given the enormous build-up their rivalry had.

I'mYourAlibi This is the statement i just can’t agree. To me this was probably the most satisfying fight i’ve seen in star wars.

I agree. Maul was one of the best things to ever happen to TCW and Rebels.
I always found this fight underwhelming, but now I understand just how dumb it really is. Your metaphor of walking into a door because you forgot to open it had me dying of laughter! 😂🤣

It's really not that dumb to want a longer duel. Duels in SW have always been a narrative tool. This is why there are extensive lightsaber BINDS, which make no sense from a martial arts perspective - a static bind in a swordfight just doesn't happen -, it's to let the efford and exertion of the characters show itself, to amuse the viewer.
The narrative of this duel is basically an uno reverse card, which is, again, an extremely underwhelming end to a beloved character.
And that's beside the glaring martial arts mistakes.

You're right, but I think here he was actually trying to have a cool and unique duel, he just doesn't know how to do that!

It would be an amazing duel when Ben just talk Maul down. Without using any weapon. And still sitting at his fire.

Maybe a Darth Sion moment but without a fight. Maul is only alive because of his pure hate and anger.
I just like it's simplicity and how it ends Maul's story but, I do agree with Maul's rushed jab.

Luminara getting kicked of the cliff hangar by Ventress is even more embarrassing. Very good and insightful points on this duel. Nothing against children, but shows that are targeted toward children are poorly written and lazy. No thoughtfulness at all.
Do a video about the saber copter used by the inquisitor in the Rebels series 😁

I personally find it functional at best. Still I don't think it is the best duel at all. But worst one? I will likely give that to almost all of the fights of the shitty Sequel Trilogy, Yoda vs. Dooku in Episode II, all of Grievous vs. Obi-Wan in both Episode III and TCW altogether and Mace Windu vs. Darth Sidious in Episode III.
I'm not sure I'd say this is the worst duel. What I said is it's one of the worst martially speaking, that is, some of the worst martial arts. I would agree that Grievous vs Obi-Wan in ROTS is another one of the most disappointing duels, but there is at least one potentially good move in it; Grievous' opening.
The Sequel Trilogy is flashy Whack-a-Mole, so not very strong regarding martial arts either. There's plenty of flaws to go around, but none of them as self-destructive as Maul's in this duel. The same can be said of Windu vs Sidious. And Yoda vs Dooku in AOTC also has Yoda continually moving to disrupt his opponent; a valid strategy. Nothing else positive to say, really, but that's more than I can say for this duel.
What's your favorite duel? Mine is Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan vs Maul in TPM.
Second is Vader vs Luke in ROTJ.
TBH None of the lightsaber duels make much more sense than this if they are at all in practical point of view.
You're right that none of the duels make much sense from a martial stand point. These fights were choreographed to look cool, not to be realistic. They were then performed or animated by actors and artists, not anyone with any actual fighting skill. That being said, the fight proper of this particular fight has no redeemable qualities whereas other duels in Star Wars do. That's not to say I'd classify any of these duels as good martial arts (none of them are) but that this is the worst of them.

@@imyouralibi6208 I'm thinking to do a video on each duel eventually. But, as I'll be doing them chronologically, It will be some time until I get to that duel! So here's a quick answer, if I may. The throne room fight is something of a combination of the problems with the two styles of lightsaber fighting in Star Wars.
In the OT, Bob Anderson, an actual fencer, was involved in the choreography, thus actual moves and strategies were attempted. Yet, as Mark Hamill has a beginner and Bob Anderson was in a huge suit and trying to accommodate a beginner, the actions are made laughably too big and clumsily.
In the PT, they tried speeding things up, making the actions flashier. Yet all attempt towards accuracy left aside from Ray Park and Christopher Lee who both had martial arts training.
In the ST, they are swinging wide again while retaining their indifference towards accuracy. It's very apparent that the actors and/or choreographer know nothing about swordfighting, only about movie tropes.
