      So it's not as it was advertised. IT's not about a superhero? I guess I just don't get the appeal then. It also just feels very sad. Are we mean to root for Jen? Are we supposed to be on her side?
      She could be saving people with her abilities, but she seems so completely incapable of recognizing the gift that she was given. It's like someone was given a hundred billion dollars, and can't see how much good they could do.

      She-Hulk, aka Jennifer Walters, introduced in the comics in 1979, is much less sexually tortured and generally tastes better for mates. As a lawyer who obtained gamma powers through a life-saving blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce, she can often switch between Jen and She-Hulk at will but almost always prefers to stay tall and healthy. Green. She likes herself better that way, and she has more luck with men, too. In She-Hulk #19 in 2007, Walters was forced to take an oath to list the people she slept with in one form or another.

    • @Zombie_Trooper
      @Zombie_Trooper Год назад +2

      @BingBongBoi There's a difference between Target audience and viewership demographics. Of course, Marvel has a large Millennial base. That's not the issue. It's that base who has been here since the turn of the century and ushered in the boom, but the reality is Marvel, Disney, and their execs make their most gross profit from young people aged 6-18. That's where their merchandising is the strongest, and all their back-end profit is made in deals with brands that appeal to that demo. Our demo is far less likely to buy, especially when you consider the current economic climate. Sure, a bunch of 35 year Olds can like the movies and be 40% of the viewership, but they're not the bulk purchasers of brand deal tie ins and perpetuating the brand. Comics are gearing more towards adults now, sure, but they weren't even meant for us until the 90's, they were penny entertainment for kids, and thus, the stories we get are focused through those lenses and Marvels subsidiaries are even currently running campaigns to pull in young readers because that's their target desire. The movies and shows are effectively designed, first and foremost, for that age range, and if it picks up the Millennials, that's a nice win, but not their target.

    Monica made a point I would like to expand on.. I am over 50 and was reading She-Hulk comics before I was a teenager. The men who treated women as less than acted the same way back then, it was just limited by the media of the time. Stan Lee gave a louder voice to women by making She-Hulk the first character to break the forth wall. And those that didn’t want to hear it said those comics are for children. Women today have a louder voice and bigger media platform but sadly there are still those that want to silence their voice with anger and insults.

    Actually the MCU is based off the Marvel Ultimate Universe 2000-2015. Kevin Feige is a fan of Marvel Ultimate but knows the older Marvel also. Most of the stories of the MCU is catered around those younger comic readers. Some of the shows like Moon Knight, She Hulk and Werewolf by Knight come from older stories. Hawkeye, Ms Marvel and Falcon and the Winter Soldier are based off post 2000 Marvel comics. So as we go forward it is a mixture of old and new. Sooner or later I expect they will reset the Marvel Universe so they can tell the same stories again but with a different style for a different era of Marvel. That is what Marvel and DC have done in the comics to keep things fresh while using the same characters.

She is a public figure that went on the news, does high profile lawyer cases has a workplace she goes to everyday and she can control herself in hulk form so likely wouldnt kill attackers as a Publicly known lawyer with no secret identity. Bruce was on the run for years had no permanent address,would change uncontrollably and certainly kill any attackers that came at him, a literal beast that couldnt be reasoned with. Also he wasnt a public figure until smart hulk after Infinity Wars. Also there has not been a Hulk movie since Incredible Hulk in over 15 years since Incredible hulk like 2006 so no Bruce personal life for us.

    I think Marvel (the MCU) grew from within itself. Because all the stuff that we are getting like the light elf and stuff grew out of us getting used to the space stuff. The more cosmic stuff like Thor and Guardians wouldn't have felt normal without the 1st Thor and Avengers having aliens.

Marvel is also science fiction, magicians, social satire, war, westerns, horror, sword & sorcery, teen romance, detectives, and yes, comedy. Everyone is not meant to enjoy every single thing they put out. It's okay if you skip the products you don't care for. The most interesting part of this show that if you don't like it, you sort of become one of the villains of the show. Talk about weaponized meta storytelling. It's one of the most direct commentaries on negative fan reaction I've ever seen in any genre project.
    The writers found a way to actively make dislike, or commentary of your dislike for the show your watching, a part of the show. Doesn't really matter if you have a legitimate dislike of something in the show.
    1. It's a comedy, (even though there are long stretches of straight drama and no humor, but ok) so if you say you don't like it, you just don't get the joke and it's your fault for not getting the humor.
    2. Any negative comments you might have on the show, instantly become part of the shows various social media montages about people not liking Jen.
    Basically it's the perfect critic/public response armor. If you think the show sucks, or just doesn't work for you... and you say that on social media... then people who like it can easily say "you're just one of the toxic haters of the show". No need to debate, conversation over. It's brilliant for that, even though I'm not a fan, I have to give them credit, that is very well done.

    If Marvel is to continue, it has to branch out. Find new stories and new ways to tell them. It can't be Iron Man, rinse and repeat; Avengers, rinse and repeat. Phase 4 explores different characters and narratives. Wandavision doesn't exist before P4. A B&W journey through early American sit-coms? Ms. Marvel, a coming-of-age character dramedy and part-time superhero narrative? But people expecting a repeat of Iron Man won't always know how to digest that stuff. It doesn't match pre-existing expectations.

    The incredible hulk was not a superhero movie it was a monster movie. She-Hulk is not a superhero because she doesn't believe in heroics she believes in law and order. This show will vshow jennifer even through no action there are consequences. This is an anthology series not about She-Hulk but the MCU status today and where is it going first consider super powers there's a apprehensive of them then normalized and desensitize. Then in the future there will be fearful and hatred which is when did X-Men come because in the point of the X-Men is there hated by all for being who they are whether they use their powers or not. People love superpower people in the MCU. The landscape of the MCU will change but this TV series shows people with powers that always existed even if we didn't see them. knowing that the universe is normalize them to fearing to unnecessarily hating them and the show.

    @1:15 I personally enjoyed Jen’s intro scene with us. It was my favorite start of an episode.
    However, I wouldn’t call Bruce, Emil, and Wong cameos because they clearly show up for more than a mere minute. I feel like they’re either special guest stars or recurring co-stars.
    Nevertheless, she’s right about one thing: this is her show.
    It’s also funny how she’s talking to us and her co-stars pay little to no attention to that whatsoever.
    And we finally found the worst character in the MCU: Madisynn King.

    The first phases of Marvel was geared towards comic book fans; they were love letters to us. Phase 4 had Marvel Studios change their focus no longer using comic book writers or comic book fans to write scripts. It was their belief that fans on,y thought they knew what they wanted however; the abysmal reviews tell another story.
    She-Hulk is a series I enjoyed for what it is but during my younger years we had CBS trying to put together their own version of the MCU beginning with the Incredible Hulk starring Bill Buxby and Lou Ferrigno; we then had the Nicholas Hammond led Spider-Man. Later on Rebel Brown starred as Captain America followed up with the Incredible Hulk tv movies featuring Daredevil played by Rex Smith and also Thor portrayed by Eric Kramer which interesting enough had Thor’s alter ego Dr. Donald Blake played by Steve Levitt. Doctor Strange also had his own tv movie starring Peter Hooten in the titular role. Wong was played by Clyde Kusatsu.
    The old movies and series of course, were no where on the level of what we see now nor were they close to the Netflix; Fox; ABC; or Freeform Marvel shows which were all cancelled after Marvel once contracts expired and the Disney deal was finalized.

    So does anyone else think that it's totally fine for the guy not to be into a shapeshifting girlfriend?
    They play it off as if He's wrong or a bad guy because he was freaked out by the fact of her Non-hulk self, but seems to me that people might be put off by someone who is an entirely physically and emotionally different person from one moment to the next as a love interest. It'd be one thing if He saw her in both forms, but we are meant to believe this was his first exposure to non-hulk Jen.
    Also, so many parts of this show highlight things that are supposed to be funny, but come off as off-putting or just weird. Like being a jerk to the process server? We are meant to like Jen, but the writers go out of their way to write her as rude and generally not likeable.
    As you guys mentioned, this was her first superhero outing, and she's legit non-caring about it. I guess it's a subversion, but man talk about deflating. Like the joy of seeing someone realize what they can do... the fun of those moments of discovery, in this show, they just focus on the mundanity and really couldn't care less. I guess that's interesting? But it's like going to beach and focusing on the sea gull poop.
    Re-watching this with you guys is kinda painful, and I know a lot of people posting say they love it, but... the disconnect from this show and the rest of Marvel could not be clearer. I will give the writers this, they took a lot of risks. Having a character who literally is annoyed by having to save the world is a choice. This show really is Marvels' first 50/50 show, it's very divisive in that there is very little middle ground. Either you think it's the best thing ever and you love Madisynn, and think it's all great fun. Or... you just can't understand what they were trying to do, and generally find it annoying and out of place.
    Lastly, the dunking on toxic fans bit. As the show goes on, the joke begins to ware pretty thin. It's like imagine if you went to a comedian, and he kept telling the same joke over and over. The first few times you laugh, but at some point, it gets old.

    • @grandpagohan1
      @grandpagohan1 Год назад

      And know you understand why dealing with those toxic fans is fucking obnoxious. They repeat the same dumbass bullshit over and over and over again. Wasn't funny or cool the first time, now it's just pathetic. You think the joke wore thin? The toxic losers were wore thin millennia ago. I'm glad the series made them the butt of the joke and didn't let up. They don't deserve anything else than to be made fun of.

    • @Termite30
      @Termite30 Год назад

      My thoughts exactly. I felt that every single episode was needlessly targeting toxic masculinity. It's like, "WE GET IT!". But they continue beating a dead horse, over and over. They even changed up her original (more interesting) origin story just to keep a woman from being rescued by a man. It's the same problem I had with Captain Marvel. The chauvinism is played up to unbelievable levels of frequency and blatanism. As a man, I've been around toxic dudes all of my life, but the way it was portrayed in this show was just so over the top that I found myself rolling my eyes more often than laughing. I just didn't find it funny.
      I'm nit saying that these real issues can't be written in a funny way, I just feel that the writers that were hired were not skilled enough to make those issues (or the story as a whole) work well enough.

      I think that it's not made to appeal to everyone. I think younger fans love it because It's extremely meta, and constantly calling out tropes and old ways of writing that still work but can get tiring.
      Personally it's not for me. It's a lot less heroic and much more self-interested then a typical genre show. Jen isn't really all that self-less, she's much more like an average person thrust into something she wants no part of. It's frustrating for some of us who love the "good guy/girl" narrative like Spiderman or Captain America, because those are idealized characters. JW isn't that, but it comes across as very cynical, because she really doesn't want any part of her new identity.
      More traditional folks, want a character to save the day and be a beacon of hope. Heroes in the classic sense are allegories of growth and change, their adventures are about overcoming adversity in various forms, But younger audiences are much more jaded, and want their "heroes" to reflect more realistic mundane struggles rather then allegories.
      They want heroes who are less perfect, heroes who aren't paragons. (see "The Boys" or "Invincible") She-hulk feels like it was made for mostly for them, and that's ok. We don't all have to love everything Marvel does. But I will say that could be a part of the reason for their recent slight downturn. We can't all be on board with each new and different turn, and further the character is from the template, especially without a large built in fan base, the less appealing a character is overall.
      She-hulk is unique because she doesn't fit, and that tonal shift, the lack of stakes, and the overall purposeful disrespect the character shows to the entire genre can be off putting to some. Some people love it, they love stories that are internal and not external. Saving the day is old hat, they want to see heroes as more human.
      The most interesting phenomena I've seen however is that when you don't like it, you become one of the villains of the show. Talk about weaponized meta storytelling.
