    I only spent about the first 3-6 months of my design career learning to use Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash, and the next 24 years learning the art of design. My high school design students can understand the software with little instruction, so I have found it to be much more valuable to devote a majority of the school year exposing them to all kinds of design, and helping to cultivate their individual visions. As I build my lessons for the 17-18 school year, I appreciate your dissection of the Futur of design education. I will use your analysis as a guide.

    I agree with your view on education. Students like myself with ADHD would benefit from a tailored curriculum that speaks to their interests and skills instead of boring them. I'm a smart person but in grade school I thought I was dumb because everything bored me so much, and I stopped paying attention. My grades slipped, and so did my confidence.
    Side note--> one of my favorite movies that talks about this is Temple Grandin. I highly recommend.

    The things I am learning from this channel are more valuable than my whole cursus at the polytechnic school of architecture and urbanism ! If I am ever to be switching career to graphic design the reason would be that the futur channel is the REAL SCHOOL

    I have heard you say this a few times now, that you feel like you (The Futur) isn’t necessarily interested in teaching the tools or hard skills, but rather the soft skills, design thinking and business. Because there is a lot of places where you can already learn those skills cheap, and from good teachers to. But the way I se it, people want you to teach them the the hard skills as well, because they like you and your team. While The Futur fills a gap in online design education witch is much needed, you should consider making some courses on the hard skills, like illustrator and indesign to name a few. Again, because people like you, and they want you to teach them, not all the other people who are out there. Just my thoughts. Thank you for all the good content. I have really learned a lot from you, and I don’t know of a better place to learn what you teach. So thank you. I’m self-taught motion designer and 3D animator in Denmark.

      I second all of this! I’m a self-taught graphic designer, and just found this channel a few weeks ago. I wish I found it a year ago when I first started out because I would definitely be so much more skilled than I am today. Thankfully it’s never too late! I love this channel, the content and the massive value of what we get to learn.

    • @Nikki_the_G
      @Nikki_the_G 5 лет назад +4

      Wow I actually couldn't disagree more. There are hundreds of places to learn software free or cheap. These so-called "soft" skills that they are teaching are thin on the ground and what is desperately needed for self-taught and school grad designers. Often they are barely touched on even in design school. I really value their free content and reading suggestions, they are game changers and what will differentiate you from the hoards of "I know photoshop, I'm a designer" everywhere. In fact, I consider these skills the "hardest" for a majority of designers to learn, because they don't think they "need to know" so much about business or they just think they aren't wired for it. If you are running a business, which you are as a freelancer, you better know about business. If you are offering service to businesses, you need to understand their needs. You need more than just "good design" to thrive.

    But here parents usually ask you to go to medical or engineering. So currently I am doing job in Oil and Gas field. But in this lockdown I am finally learning about designing.

    I have known about this channel for a while but I hadnt dedicated my time to really study design and the business of design because when I first started (which was just in Jan 2019) I was too busy of finding clients and afraid of not getting jobs, then I dont know if I'm lucky or not, I had tons of jobs, which is good financially. But I dont think technically and in business, I scaled up, I get similar jobs that I am not really excited doing. My mistake is that I invested my time and energy in my job than my self. I need to take a break to study and evaluate my business strategy. One of my steps is by doing The Futur video marathon from today to the whole September 2019, at least one video and I always take notes (I have a notebook in my iPad called "The Futur Takeaways"). This is the first video, so expect my comment every day. Thanks so much for your hard work and dedication in putting such valuable content!

    I started watching this channel way before I even got to Design School, I was like learning as much as I possibly could in order to stay one step ahead of everyone else, and I realized that the value that college gives is not really that worth, I spent a whole year "learning" the principles, and to be honest I found that I got more out of RUclips and other platforms than the school program itself. So I dropped out and started doing everything on my own, and I'm glad I made that decision

    • @kaylaaa772
      @kaylaaa772 4 года назад +1

      exactly. College is nothing more than the traditional path we've all been told to attend. With how technology has evolved over the years, there's no need to pay a high rising tuition for this type of knowledge. It's really just about your portfolio and what you can bring to the table. That's all it is really.

    Just revisiting all of the previous live streams and they were all so amazing!! To Chris's point about the importance of copy writing, I think that is an invaluable skill to have. As designers, we do not think that we will have to write anything throughout our career. But we use persuasive and engaging writing every day of our lives (even if we are not physically writing)! In short, LEARN COPY WRITING.

    Ok. I went to school for Journalism which focused more on storytelling, marketing and advertising. After I graduated that I ended going back to school for a master's in Fine Art/ Media Design program. This was more about utilizing our skills and creating brand packages based off a narrative.
    So on a basic level, I learned Typography, Editorial, Environmental, and Sequential design. Going into my masters, I was learning more about visually telling stories for branding and the other stuff that I learned.
    -----
    My master's focused more on the critical thinking and bringing those art concepts together as a DESIGNER. When I source an illustrator for my fashion design projects, I get frustrated when a person can't connect their elements to reasoning. Or even worse, when an illustrator's reasoning is "it's the latest fashion...it's what the kids will like"...well what kinds of kids? Where is the consistency?.. My question is when are we going to disconnect art from design. I understand, art can live in design but the problem with self taught is they'll only look for the art. - Great Video

    I have strong knowledge of about half of these things, and I'm not a graphic designer. I'm in Fine Art/Fashion. Things like UX/UI and motion graphics I have a basic overview of. It seems extremely daunting to have this depth and breadth of knowledge when you're a student, but I think it's important to point out that we have to keep working on these skills throughout our careers.
    Great discussion.

    I like what Chris said about "We should never work, we should just play. Our whole lives should be designed around play." I don't understand though how that can apply to the more "boring" but must-do tasks in our lives, or at our work.
    1. When a person thinks that every task should be fun and a game, otherwise they shouldn't bother with it, won't they start judging it from the beginning? which means that often they will judge it wrong. "I don't like this subject you make me learn, so therefore it's not fun for me, so therefore I don't need it."
    2. Won't they quit their jobs often or dropping of a project because it's not fun anymore? when in reality it might be just a phase, or it might be something worth pursuing to learn how to handle those tasks and clients better?
    3. Won't this type of thinking make people want instant gratification and not try so hard to get to the final result?
    4. There are responsibilities in life that are no fun for anyone, but someone has to do them (from baby's diapers to the more serious things like an illness). This is an exaggeration, but my question here is "How can you make those tasks playful and more fun?" not that you have to, but life would be better if you could :)
    The Futur team does a great great job. Keep it up! Even though I moved away from Graphic Design and navigated towards making art for the gaming industry, I still enjoy your videos very much. Maybe that's why I'm asking questions to clarify those phrases :)

I wish I could explain it better- I have a martial arts studio ( I’m also an artist) when I started teaching I was not a business owner / marketing expert - these are keys to success - I’ve rested on the fact that I’m a good “martial artist curriculum designer” and I needed to learn about advertising / marketing because I couldn’t afford to hire anyone - I really love this and I’m grateful - I’m way to small for anyone to help me out so - I’m here to make my dreams come true!

    I'm not so sure we should focus solely on one's strengths in regards to education. Especially when it comes to design, and creative thinking, knowledge about other topics plays a crucial role. The big challenge for teachers is to make material relevant to the student that is disinterested, and helping the student feel rewarded in accomplishing difficult tasks. Otherwise I tend to agree with Alan watts, and that life ought to feel more like play. But it is often through adversity that we learn most.

    Very very informative! I am a production artist involving mostly making storyboards, animatics and character design. And I say, design theory is universal. Graphic design interests me as well. This session was very informative. Thank you all of you for the hard work!

    I’ve been a teacher for many years. That said...I also wrote curriculum for schools, districts and states. All in art education. Not many art teachers are up for researching and doing that tedious job of writing a curriculum. (Drawing a curriculum would be more fun). I give you a lot of credit.
    STEM - is now STEAM - ADD ART PLEASE!

    I feel like Color Correction instead of color theory, might belong on the curriculum board. Especially for mograph guys. Color correction, especially in film, photography and video is winning amateurs 100/hour rates. I feel like LUTs are increasingly important to know and now in current iterations of Photoshop have them integrated.

    I've actually been self-taught first and then went to "design" UNI as I thought they'd be able to teach me and make me a PRO. I was wrong, had to even help some teachers when they couldn't answer some questions to other students or had no idea about the basics of some tools.
    So kind of lost 4 years. Because of that finished the diploma about 5-6 years later (didn't want or need it, but wanted to finish things once and for all). Although couple of years later the diploma is still waiting for me at the Uni somewhere, haven't picked it up yet :D

    the overwhelming majority of children, when in an environment like the schools you are describing, will learn much more than kids in public schools. not only in the subjects that they are passionate about, but in all of them. studies show again & again that people learn best when relaxed and happy. not when stressed, not when unfairly compared to others, not when stifled indoors and faced with punishment for expressing human needs.
    kids seem lazy to you because they are a product of their environment. a lot of kids will have a hard time with the transition, its true. if they switch from a conventional school like a public school to a more independent school. but they are adaptable and eventually find their rhythm.
    like how plants will only produce gorgeous blooms and delicious fruits when their bed is healthy, their needs are met, they are given space but attention, people will only reach their full potentials when they are in environments that are healthy and happy and have their needs met. stress kills them, trying to get them to keep growing with no rest, if its not their natural way, doesnt work. etc. the metaphor can go on.
    when we expect little from kids, thats what they will give us. but when we encourage without stress - positive reinforcement and leading by example, and we show them that we know that they are amazing and smart and passionate and curious, they will live up to that. with very very few exceptions. this doesnt mean we can say, "i know you will go to an ivy league". thats forcing our own ideas on to them, thats adding stress. but we can say "i know that you will make the best decisions possible as an adult because ive prepared you well. even the ones that you later felt werent the best, you will learn from."
