      School is what you make it.
      Thing on youtube are "great" because you seek for specific answers with no expectations. In art school you expect the school to learn you specific things and if dont you blame it on the school.

    Real simple:
    Art doesn't answer any questions. Actually, it opens the floor for questions.
    Design solves problems.

      I happen to think art answers the questions the mind on it own cant even begin to. I find nowadays people get stuck because they are stuck on the wrong questions. Art can give the answers to the question people ought to be asking. "What causes this feeling. Oh that. I recognize that. thats so true" When I come across things I didn't know to be a thing, its usually through art where I recognize it first. It also answers the question of how to get through to people who are too afraid to be wrong. Art says, "this is this feeling, if you feel the same, then its this for you too."

    The designer has a concrete role, the artist has a subtle role. From my point of view a designer is more a translator, he translates his client's ideas into images. He is on the border between a psychoanalist and a craftsman. By the way, thank you for all this teaching. Best from France !

    For me, the difference between art and design is this: Both sides are connected and have creativity as a common source, but the difference is that art must be open to interpretation, the viewer reflects his inner world with that of the artist. Art can be inspiring and/or disturbing, everyone can take what he or she wants from the artwork. Art often asks the big questions of our time, but can rarely give answers.
    Design is the exact opposite: Ideally, design should communicate the same thing clearly and understandably for everyone. Design can also be inspiring, but it should reflect the vision/values of the brand/client. Design solves specific problems, i.e. develops answers to specific questions.
    Right in between you end up with art that is uninspiring but perhaps beautiful to look at and design that is smooth and beautiful but inefficient and does not solve the client's problems.

    • @mathieu4488
      @mathieu4488 4 года назад +2

      I agree. I would say that art communicates with the subtle, design communicates with the physical. Art gives a point of view, design responds to a problem. Two different roles. Two important disciplines.

    I just love the specialist on the outside and generalist on the inside thing! You guys should really cut this piece and edit it to a shorter video like you guys always do. I have so many interests and things I want to explore that I always feel like giving up on them meant giving up on me, but this concept and what Chris said, I'm sold! So much value in this one and I have never seen Chris talk about it like these. I'm super grateful! Things might start coming together for me because of that!
    Edit: just found out the bite-sized video of that part is already on the channel, opsies.

    I needed to see this. I was experiencing a lot of internal turmoil over seeing myself as a generalist. I didn't understand why it was so difficult for people to see that it was a good thing, but now I see it from their perspective. I agree that consistently showing people quality work, and building up a reputation is important. I think now I just have to pick a lane and commit to it externally, while internally allowing myself to explore.

    I think the first question resonates with a lot of designers when first starting out. Many of us started learning design because of a passion for art and creativity. However, the further down the design road you travel, the less it seems you can indulge your personal creativity.
    The vast majority of designers will get their foot in the door with in-house positions pushing pixels at the whim of various clients or senior managers - largely at the mercy of strict brand guidelines and myopic briefs.
    The early career grind can be disillusioning unless you can demonstrate enough value to climb out of the pixel pusher roles, or dedicate enough free time to pushing out your personal creativity so that people start to seek you out.

    I love the insight that the words you choose shape your reality... it reminds me of something Stephen Fry wrote that has stuck with me ever since I read it, which is: "language is the parent of thought" ... it's amazing to consider that we might only truly conceive something when we have the language for what it is and what it is not. At the rough 50:00 - 56:00 mark is a good basis for every transaction to any client that is not money. And it ought to be a blueprint among other things on how to barter and trade your worth.
    However the rest of the video, from re-framing the reality (i.e. his wife's 'donation to the city instead of a parking fine'), to the acceptance of AI in art creation is such a powerful tool, not only the 'course' he is teaching here but also his approach and semantics.
    Pay attention as well to how he treats every person in the room, asks for the spelling of their name, writes it on top to cement their questioning as of importance in the course.

I always tell people in the early stages of learning to source everything they can. They won't always have to do this in life but it makes them appreciate things more. The last client that said "I could have got this on fiver", i handed them the files and told them some people cannot work together. Trading with other creatives is a brilliant way of doing things. And I know in myself that I'm not that really a good in rendering or what. This made me doubt my capabilities and I started having second-thoughts about my decision. The addiction of being able to think through what you say and connecting the dots in my head is just so satisfying, thank you again for passing your knowledge.
    Found an unintentional play of words (idk if you meant it or not), just found it funny that when you said "secret sources", the caption took it as "secret sauce", and I loved that, that and how important I felt on you talking about 'originality' just makes the point stick in my head.
    :edit: andd just afew seconds later you mentioned on that, oops.

    I learnt the difference in Art School...
    A Designer creates things can be used and mostly work to briefs. A house, clothing, bridge, posters for communication etc.
    An Artist creates things that have no function and the work mostly comes out through exploration and play, typically from intellectual and/or emotional enquiry.

    I am always attracted to knowing new idea or subject or anything which gives a new opportunity to my thinking process. And I am so caught up in this process that it makes me feel like I know nothing and I am not good at anything. I love all kinds of things like politics, marketing, science, technology.... the list goes on..and how they impact one another. I can't figure out how to use all this knowledge and what I should be specialized in? I sound like crazy..lol.

    I'm like Chris, if I have knowledge on any kind I share it. What's the point of keep it secret.
    I have friends and happen to work with them and their sometimes are not willing to share what they know because their think they can loose some jobs, Like seriously?
    if you are good at what you do, you don't have to be afraid.
    Thank you Chris for sharing all the time!

    I've been scolded by a lot of people telling me that art and design are not the same thing because of the making stuff for someone else idea or problem solving way of thinking. What about commissions? You are hired to solve a problem using art, drawing a comic book cover and while you are using some design skills you are still only applying art, not making it for yourself, not even using things that come from you and it's to solve a problem. I'm starting to think that when people say art they think of high abstract art or something along those lines while art has more variations than design, while incorporating it.

    • @YVZSTUDIOS
      @YVZSTUDIOS 4 года назад

      I kinda agree with you except this part _"not even using things that come from you "_ 🤔
      When making an art commission, the source material may not be from me, but I definitely DO use something that comes from me: My own personal years of experience, style, unique use of tools, etc. Some artists for example get hired just because of their style (or one of their styles) because others want art in that specific style (or similar).

    • @IftimescuVlad
      @IftimescuVlad 4 года назад

      @@YVZSTUDIOS That's what I was referring to when I said you are still solving a problem. That's the part that comes from you, whatever it may be: use of colors, style of drawing, etc. but the most important part IS the source material and that does not belong to you as most people will be interested in the source not necessarily the art, the art is a nice bonus.
