This series did the evil superman trope before it became more common but it is still great. Injustice to me at the time felt like a successor to the Justice Lords plot in the OG Justice League show. Superman and especially Wonder Woman are so hatefilled that they're unrecognizable and the story is so engaging

I wouldn’t call it a trope. Some hacky article did but there’s literally like four stories across three mediums where that story is used. That doesn’t constitute a trope. It’s unique to that universe and maybe one other, where that THEME is similar but explored in a different way. Idk why but the misuse of that word irks me.

I don't think it was just the death of Lois that turned him to madness. It was the fact that he was manipulated to do it himself and kill his unborn child along with 11 million other people (many of which were also children). He just could not cope with the guilt at all and the fact that almost nobody helped him grieve properly (Batman especially) is what turned him to try to take back control of his life in such a drastic manner. The Joker's plan was just too cruel and too perfect to take down Superman.

i have read the comics for injustice and superman's fall wasn't sudden or instant. it was slow and gradual. like at points, he was still superman but he started to do more harsher shit. at one point, alfred kind of warns superman not to go too far. clark leaves the batcave and passes by alfred. alfred says "good day, master clark". clark tells him jokingly that it's just clark, not master. alfred looks at him and says "yes. i hope you remember that."
alfred served as the line. the last stop before superman's fall. because if alfred pennyworth has lost faith in you, you are truly lost.

One thing I do kind of hate about Injustice is that It further popularised the notion of an evil Superman which by now has been done to death and will continue to be overdone in the future. I'm at a point where I just want real pure and hopeful Superman. The reason Superman as a character works and why he is undeniably essential to the world of comics is because he represents the hope and goodness within all of us. He is an emotionally healthy hero and one who will never give up on us.

There's also the fact that it was a gradual decline. The whole story in comic spans five years before the first game, and there's a lot of slow, gradual evil done in the name of good. Even then, the story ultimately isn't about how Superman is wrong for killing, it's about how friends should support each other in their darkest times.

If you want an interesting subversion of the Harley/Joker relationship try the Telltale batman games (the second part specifically) Harley is the dominant abuser in the relationship and it actually creates an interesting Joker who both befriends and in his eyes is betrayed by Bruce Wayne, the other interesting aspect of this game being it focuses more on the person beneath the Cowl.

This series made me love superman even more. Seeing the evil version of him voiced by George the man himself made me realize just how great of a character Clark is because it's thanks to the friends around him (even batman as edgy as he is) and his iron will to remain optimistic in spite of the pessimism around him that he stands out as the hero we all aspire to be.
So seeing an evil version of him who decided to stoop to pessimism and become a tyrant get beat down by the real hero, it's amazing
(I should also point out superman feels like he'd be sad if Lois died, yes. But he wouldn't go evil. Not even the Justice Lord version would though he already did go rogue. This regime superman on the other hand and all other depictions after the fact? Oh they totally would lose it. Superman would be disappointed)

I think it's less the death of Lois that broke him and more how she died. He was tricked and manipulated into killing both her and their unborn baby in a brutal way. Her blood is on his hands, and then all of Metropolis is nuked because of her death. He becomes responsible for so many deaths in an instant and it destroys him. In a fit of rage, he kills the Joker for revenge, and then gets a taste of it. He see's Joker in every criminal, he sees the potential of another tragedy in every villain, and he sees the ghosts of all the people that died that day and vows to never allow anyone to do anything like Joker did ever again.
Like Joker said, all it can take is one bad day. And Lois's death and subsequent destruction of Metropolis was a very bad day

In defense of the depiction of Evil Superman, at least in the DCEU, that version of Superman might've gone rouge from the death of Lois, but that was only because the immense grief of losing her made him venerable to Darksied's anti-life equation. Truly if there is anyone that ties Superman to humanity in that universe, it's his mother, as when she is threatened by both Zod and Lex, Superman gets really pissed and loses it, with Lois, he certainly is upset when Lex throws her off a building, but he doesn't lose control of the situation until his mother is mentioned.

  • @sharendavis9216

The way I see it Wonder Woman is the true villain of Injustice. Superman may be the center figure of the Regime, but Diana was the one who pushed him to that point. I also believe the idea of Lois being what tethers Clark to humanity is both ingenious and also a bit strange. I think it worked best in Smallville where Clark still strived to do the right thing for humanity, but it wasn't until he saw Lois return in S9 that he was willing to return to society.
Also, I believe that Clark's turn to the dark side was a progression that started off as a broken man trying to admittedly mold the world into a better one, into a sociopath hellbent on subjecting the world to his delusional values. All this was present because Clark's only source of comfort was Diana and the Regime League members. The Kent's and of course Batman didn't serve as a source of comfort for him. Batman focused too much on the idea of what Clark stood for rather than reaching out to the man and empathizing with him. I believe this due to the comics and how Clark was on a slippery slope, but didn't turn into the asshole he was in IGAU until maybe year 3 of the comic.

It wasn’t just Lois and the baby’s deaths that broke Superman. It was also the nuke that went off in Metropolis that killed pretty much everyone in the city plus a lot of heroes who tried to help. Pretty much everyone Superman was close with, excluding Ma and Pa Kent, is dead due to Superman’s actions and the few people he had left weren’t there for him when he needed them most. It wasn’t as simple as “Lois dead, Superman not connected with humanity anymore.” It’s a story about a man filled with so much grief and resentment that he has tunnel vision. He’s refusing to acknowledge the fact that he was partially responsible for the deaths of those he loved, and when other heroes start to agree with him it only pushes him further down the rabbit hole. He may be good at heart but when 5 out of the 6 other JL members agree that things have to change it makes it easier to wave away any doubts he would have.

I hate the status quo it, and gave of “just have an evil superman, who lost Lois”. The thing they always seem to miss about. It is that in injustice, it wasn’t the fact that she died, and it wasn’t even the fact that he lost his unborn child with her, it’s a fact that superman killed his family along with thousands of innocent bystanders well under the joker’s manipulation. That’s the thing people who emulate the story tend to mess.
I also have to say, I like the idea that in the world were Superman is the villain, Lex Luther will be a hero. It’s kind of interesting to think that in almost every world their enemies, regardless of who is good and evil.
Although I do think injustice two did some things better than this game, especially when it came to its characterization of Superman, this game overall is the best justice league game we’ve had to date

    Superman: "You weren't the gun!"
In Batman's mind (at least, in some incarnations), this statement is wrong on its face.
Something that both the film Batman Begins and the series Harley Quinn got astonishingly correct about Batman's origin story: in those stories, young Bruce (realistically!) feels a measure of guilt for his parents' demise, either because it was his decision to take the shortcut down Crime Alley (in Harley Quinn; he was a dumb kid, we can excuse his decision for that, though why would his parents agree?), or because it was he wanted to leave the opera early (in Batman Begins). In Batman Begins, he learns to get over that guilt; in Harley Quinn he doesn't, and it colors the kind of Batman he becomes many years later (in stupid, stupid ways, but I blame the writers for that).
In general, I think young Bruce - in any incarnation - may realistically have some measure of survivor's guilt, and he may feel some measure of "they wouldn't have died if I didn't want to see 'Zorro' so badly that night." In that case, Bruce may grow into a Batman who feels like that maybe he wasn't the gun, but that he may have been a contributing factor.

I also realy hate that "When Lois dies, Superman goes rogue" Idea.
I mean in basically in every Version of the Character the Source for his humanity comes from his Parents.
The El's literally gave their Lives to give him a opportunity to live and the Kent's showed him unconditional love and teached him Moral and Ethics.
Im convinced that when you want to write an evil Superman , you have to drastically change his Backstory.

Lois isn't what just made him snap. Yes, it started his descent but he didn't just suddenly decide he was a dictator. It actually motivated him similar to batman, he wanted to enforce peace so nothing like that could happen again. He first tried to stop global wars, which lead to the United States kidnapping his parents. Then Atlantis attacked him. Then batman turned against him. He was being attacked by the people he'd come to love and trust, and as Superman became more and more afraid of being vulnerable again, he became more drastic. Justifying greater measures such as murdering an entire army to save the Earth. Lois wasn't his anchor to Earth, but she losing her to his own hand was the catalyst that lead to him being afraid. And that fear is what slowly led up to the Superman we got. His parents are even in the story actually, and they try to talk sense to him. You see the fear of losing someone in that moment too, green arrow shoots him in the shoulder but it bounces off him cause he's... Superman... And hits his dad in the shoulder, which makes him go berserk. And his parents along with his actual father are ashamed. Those teachings he had are still there at his core, but he's warped them into something else, believing himself to still be good. He even has occasionally good moments, such as when Montoya tries to fight him and he refuses to hurt her because of her heart about to give out, the way he treats his team in the beginning. All of this is to say, he didn't just suddenly flip a switch and it wasn't just Lois that turned him into what he was, but her loss greatly altered how he reacted to other tragedies in the story, of which there are several. Sorry for the super long comment but injustice is a very interesting story to me so talking about it is fun.

Reading these comic, it wasn't the death if Lois Lane and Metropolis that led to Superman becoming evil, but the way he was abandoned and antagonized by his best surviving friend - Batman - during his time of mourning. Then manipulated by Wonder Woman and Sinestro to become worse.

In my opinion, NRS games since MK9 doesn't need any movie or cartoon adaptation. Because, it already IS a movie and a game in one. Like, they has all of the cutscenes that explains everything, and awsome gameplay for player to enjoy. So, if you want a Injustice movie, then just watch Injustice 1 and 2 cutscenes and that would be more than enough to have a good injustice movie.

Losing his son AND wife by his own hands is reasonable character arc. It’s not a poor choice at all. Superman was used to destroy his own family and home town.
It’s more then just Louis. Why would he be subtle about the change when he was made the villain of murdering his own family.
