THE TRUE SIGN OF FOOTBALL GREATNESS - "kindness to fans" Around 1997 I was on a beach in Phuket with my Mam and Auntie when we spotted Terry Venables and Ossie Ardilles kicking a ball. I approached them to say hi - and they could not have been more welcoming and friendly. Mam - being an ardent football fan - wanted a picture and both Terry and Ossie agreed. We spent a good half hour chatting and they could not have been nicer. Thankyou Terry - today we mourn your passing - and give thanks for your contribution to football - but I will especially remember you for your kindness to my mam.
Terry Venables united our national team and country in Euro 96 and gave us all a special experience as a nation that none of us old enough to remember will ever forget. Thsnk you Terry Venables and rest in peace 🙏🏼
I haven't enjoyed watching England as much as I did in '96. What a team! Lead by an amazing manager/coach. He should never have left the job and to think what we could've seen is a great shame. RIP Terry.
As a Scotsman, he broke my heart in Euro 96 but I watched in awe a few days later when he masterminded the best England performance in the last 40 years, his tactical expertise was second to none, a beautiful episode lads, a fitting tribute
That was a hard watch in many ways, but for the right reasons. Gary and Alan didn't even have to speak to show their love for Terry it was written all over their faces. He clearly had an aura and magic dust . Rest in peace Terry Venables, a lovely tribute from you all 👏👏👏
As a life long Spurs fan since the early 60s and seen many managers Terry was easily one of the top 3 along with Bill and Keith. Saw him play for Chelsea and also Spurs. What a classy midfielder he was. As a manager he was unique and everyone loved him. I feel really upset at his passing and best wishes to his family and close friends. There are signs of Terry in Ange as well so the future looks good. Terry did indeed write "Hazel" and it was made into a TV series. He was a real character with immense talent
Leeds fan...thank you chaps, brilliant tribute to a brilliant man. The shit he put up with at LUFC in the meltdown and fire sale days was scandulous but he still performed maintained his dignity and humour, Sadly missed. RIP Terry
To hear the way in which yourselves were talking about Terry is absolutely wonderful. He was obviously an unbelievable coach and human being. Very very respectful podcast guys. I can just imagine him smiling down upon you hearing such kind words. RIP El Tel.
R.I.P Terry Venables loved watching your team's as a kid always played exciting attacking football truly respected in the game and never heard a bad word about him. Great work guy's we can see what he meant to you both and remember you got to be coached and friends with a true great of English football
Some people pass & you think to yourself it's a shame but this as really upset me & I've cried a few times....All I can say is thankyou Terry for Euro 96 & that fabulous summer....Best tournament by far....RIP ... ❤
I was never a fan of any of the teams that Telly Vegetables either played for or, later, managed (apart from England, obviously) but I always rather admired the man. He was a class player, particularly later in his career at QPR when he became and embodiment of a player who actually improves with age (see also, Johnny Giles, Gary Speed, Peter Beardsley et cetera). And, as a manager, his teams always played the game the way we'd all like to think it *should* be played, with skill, intensity and an occasional reckless abandon towards defending; additionally, he was a multi-talented man. A singer (with a - cheerfully awful - top fifty UK hit), an actor and a writer - I was a *big* fan of the TV series based on the novels that he co-wrote whilst still playing football professionally. More importantly, from interviews he seemed like a genuinely decent man - a man of wit, humour and compassion for others. So, I was saddened to hear of his death and, whilst eighty isn't a bad innings by any shot, I still think the world would've been a better place if he'd managed another decade on it.
Lovely Tribute guys thanks so much. Heartfelt and very personal stories shared about Tel. as a fan of the man was lovely to hear RIP Tel, thanks for all the memories.
Great tribute lads, I still remember that great summer of '96, it was great to hear so much we would never have known about this great and kind legend so thankyou for sharing. RIP Sir El Tel
Lovely tribute. Could see how much Terry meant to you both Gary and Alan. Also really thoughtful sign off from Micah showing respect tor the stories being told.
Thank you so much for such a lovely tribute to the amazing El Tel. Very moving and so special to hear you speak about your relationships with him. RIP El Tel, thank you for so many amazing memories
A little bit before my Time but my dad always recalls terry as being england greatest ever manager, just the way we played, win or lose we always looked like winning or doing something amazing. If everyone played football as he managed then it would be a much more enjoyable game coz now we have a few negative managers that play safe a lot but he was forward thinking and I was only 5 in euro 96 but I remember loving to watch them play and the only england team I can see matching them since then is this team now. A brilliant time to be an englishman. Great podcast you two legends and micah richards (only joking). Micah u did more than of us could ever dream of so stop being so humble coz everyone would have loved to do what u done. RESPECT 👊
I had the pleasure of meeting him when he was the coach at QPR. When they had the artificial grass! I was invited to the players' lounge on a number of occasions and he was always friendly and full of fun. It was a sad day when he left the England manager's job because IMO, he was the best coach we ever had. RIP Terry, you will be missed.
Excellent and wonderful tribute to an awesome person and manager. Few players and managers are widely respected through every club but Terry was definitely one of them. His interviews etc were from a person who said everything from his heart and how it was and thats why fans respected him. A genuine and charismatic guy who will be remembered and missed...
I seen Terry outside a little paper shop in Belgrade Square, and he seen me stood there and he knew I was being hesitant in asking for autograph,so he just walked up and said give your phone to my agent and come here (opened his arm to put around me) took picture and I said thank you,he said no thank you I seen you wanting to ask but didn't and I respect that...he shook my hand wished me well and went about his day...only like a 3 minute altercation but I'll never forget it...top top man.

I was literally listening to your last episode and thought Terry would be a great guest to have on your podcast. I didn’t know he was ill but what a guy. The yellow pages advert with him, Graham Taylor and Bobby Robson came up the over day. Now sadly all gone 😢
Such a touching reflection on a truly great man. Terry Venables' legacy will be one remembered as much for his personal touch as for his footballing acumen. As I was listening to Gary talk about Terry and Gazza, and Alan about trusting him as his first choice striker I was reminded of an old proverb I heard years ago at teacher training school, 'If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, to together'. He will be missed the same way that Sir Bobby Robson will be missed; by everyone, regardless of the shirt they wear on a Saturday. My condolences to everyone who loved him.
I loved watching the Euro 96 tournament, still to this day it is the one that I remember most. Terry seemed to get everyone together, like Alan said it can't have been easy with the big characters from rival clubs. You can definitely feel the sense of admiration that both Alan and Gary had for Terry, these type of people don't come around very often in your life. Special mention to Micah too, some people would try and chip in for the sake of it but he listened respectfully to their stories / tributes - top bloke.

A great tribute to a great man, who seems to be universally liked. I loved the way England played under Venables and Euro 96 was such a great tournament, but we didn't get the finish we wanted/ deserved. RIP Terry
What a man & manager Terry Venables was!! It was fantastic to hear all your memories, it’s obvious how special he was to all in the game. Very emotional. Brilliant as usual all of you.🙌

I was 15 at the Euro 96 tournament and Ive often bored my younger work mates for years talking about what an unbelievable team we had with special players, characters, leaders and El Tel. What an incredible man Terry was and it's been so sad to hear of his passing but so lovely to hear the amazing love for this man from all his players and all that knew him. Thanks for doing this special episode guys 👏❤
Beautiful episode gentlemen. It is clear what he meant to Alan and Gary. He was simply El Tel and he was a wonderful personality. Another sad loss to our football community, however, special memories shared, as well as my condolences. A special football man.
I moved to London in 95 and my first summer was 96, what a time. Lucky enough to go to the Holland and Spain games and the way the team played particularly against Holland was one of the best games I’ve been to along with the atmosphere…. All created by El Tel, respect and thanks RIP
Yes, it’s a sad day for football on hearing of Terry Venables passing R. I. P. El Tel He was one of my fav footballer along with Johnny Haynes both were GREAT passers of a football; every pass measured to perfection. I am 74 yrs old and I have see most of the best the game has offered my game as a midfield player was based on how he and Johnny played in the middle of the park. I will always be grateful to him for helping Tottenham through their struggles. I can’t say enough about the man T. V. Gone but not forgotten. R. I. P.

Just finished watching and here, here micah. Brilliant listen and what a fantastic tribute to one of englands greatest footballing greats 👏👏👏👏👏 thanks for this fantastic video guys, great stuff 👍
El Tel a football great. Seems to be forgotten since tge early 00’s but he saved us, he saved Middlesbrough football club by coming in & helping Bryan Robson. What a manager. We drew with wolves or somebody & me & a few mates where hanging about the riverside late at night & my mate said “bad result Tez” & he sarcastically replied “well the fans know best” i didnt realise i was up close with greatness but i do now
Terry Venables' managerial career was just before my time so all I really knew of him was what my dad told me about him when they were at Spurs together. He said Venables was nice guy but a bit weird, doing all these strange warm ups by himself, amongst other unusual things at the training ground. After listening to this episode, I realise now, Terry Venables was just way ahead of the curve. RIP El Tel
I was 11 when Euro 96 happened it was my first tournament, the players, the colours, everything made me love football. Terry managing England's best striker Teddy Sheringham 👀 😂 and the lads in the semi finals was a joy to watch. Thank You El Tel
I didn't get to witness 1966, but Euro 96 I was 13 years old. Football still felt magical, I would put the radio on my bedroom window sill and play football with my friends while listening to the games, probably annoying my neighbours, but it just felt special, and Venables was a big part of that.
Met Terry at Spurs v Shelbourne friendly when I was a kid, he spoke to me and my Da for about 10 mins shook my hand for the longest time, was a lovely man who had time for everyone, gave me his autograph - Gary on the hand told me to be quite when I asked for his autograph. Thankfully I support Arsenal. But what a great man Terry will always be.

As a Scotland fan of 50 years, Terry Venables is the England manager I had most respect for. He was a proper character & a tremendous football brain.
He reclaimed the English flag for football fans, and I’ve never known such pride as Euro 96.
Lots of love and respect for the memories.
the hardest loss in football for me so far... total legend and a genius.. thx for the good times terry

Rest in Peace to Terry. An amazing Manager and Coach but most of all what a great human being. Will be missed by many.
You can see how much Terry meant to Shearer in his face when he's talking about how Venables got him scoring again for England

Lovely tribute for a lovely man.
Nicely done boys. Nicely done. Very very fitting. Celebrate the man, don’t mourn.
Class from all 3 of you, R.I.P El Tel
Well done guys. Fitting tribute.....big loss to the Football family. He always looked like any player would love to play for him
These guys are pure class. I sadly enjoyed it.
One of our best was el tel and these are I hope they realise are too.
RIP Terry Venables one of the games finest characters and football men always full of charisma. El Tel what a man
Great podcast . Really emotional. Thank you so much. You guys are great
18:26 Kevin Phillips & Le Tissier were also scoring...
We had so many strikers back then.
Legend, gave me happy memories!! Even though we didn’t win euro 96 I my heart we did
Rest in peace terry as a youngster was really nice and interesting to hear about him as a manager and person love these podcast ❤
I didn't get to witness 1966, but Euro 96 I was 13 years old. Football still felt magical, I would put the radio on my bedroom window sill and play football with my friends while listening to the games, probably annoying my neighbours, but it just felt special, and Venables was a big part of that.
Great tribute lads.
An excellent tribute
This was lovely.
Beautiful ep
