Totally agree with these focal lengths. 10 years ago, when I started shooting video on DSLRs, I remember the rush to fill out my kit with cheap primes for that shallow depth of field and pretty bokeh. Now that I'm shooting way more documentary-style projects, the flexibility of a sem-fast zoom lens is unbeatable.
I run the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 which has amazing stabilization if you buy the tap-in console and change the mode to viewfinder stabilization. Then, I took part of the flange out on my 6k and put a speedbooster element in its place so that I have a 1.1x crop on my 6k instead of the super 35mm. This also helps with stabilization as it gives me a wider field of view. Not to mention an extra stop if light and shallower DOF
TimmySparrow I’ve never looked into Tamron lenses. I shoot on a Sigma 24-70 with optical stabilization and it’s not that good. I gotta look up and see what that lens is all about. Thanks for the comment.

24-70 is a great lens. The IS works well and removes the micro jitters. Glad to hear things are going well. No matter which direction you go you’ll be fine. Although you’ll have more flexibility with the 11-20 over the 12mm. More weight but nothing a gimbal couldn’t handle.
Just discovered your channel, new sub. Your video popped up in my recommended feed I've just bought the Sigma 50-100 f1.8 (after lots of research) to match to the 18-35 f1.8 that I already own and love. I always seem to pick up this lens, I just love the image. I had been carrying around a range of primes for the medium to longer focal lengths, but decided that the 50-100 will suit the way I shoot better than constantly changing lenses. The only downside is the weight of the thing, but I think I'll get used to that. What swung it for me was watching some examples of footage shot with the 50-100, and realising that it both looks beautiful and fits with the focal lengths I use most. I'd love to have a cine housing but that's outside of my budget range for now so I just use aftermarket gear rings for the follow focus.

Does vignette only appear when you use mattebox? Is the black edge when you set 11mm on BMPCC 4K caused by the mattebox or is it because the Tokina lens is not suitable to use the 11-12mm focal length on BMPCC 4K?
Picked up a canon 17-55mm 2.8 for $500 CAD and its actually a beautiful image. This lens gets no love, as it's typically found on cheaper canon cropped body SLRs. For me its a great option with IS for super35 sensors.
Not surprised to hear this. There’s lots of lenses out there that don’t get the spot light. IS is important for us run and gun filmmakers who don’t have the time to rig up constantly. Thanks for pointing this lens out. I’ll go check it out.
Hi, i just bought a Blackmagic 6K and i'm looking for a lens. Talking about the Sigma 18-35, i read it is an APS-C lens, how can i use this lens on Blackmagic since it's supposed to be a full frame camera, i mean, do you have to set up something in the menu? Is there some quality loss, using it on a Blackmagic?
Great video! Your visuals are on point man 👌🏽I am using the 18-35 and the 50-100 as my main lenses. I recently bought a bmpcc6k and put my gh5 on the side. Currently using the gh5 as a b cam for photos or to capture some bts footage or little clips on the side where I don’t want to pull out my bmpcc rig. But I still need a lens for the gh5 that basically lives on it for most of the time. The sigma 24-70 could be a great option. I also need a new wide angle bc my old one has a mft mount. So I might get the tokina. Thanks for these tips man 🙏🏽🙏🏽

Ok so it’s hard to find a pro like yourself that can answer this question. What’s your take on full frame glass on these s35 sensor cameras? I ask because I came from a photo world years ago and got a Sony a6500. My canon 24-70 2.8 produced rather soft shots, especially in still mode. Have you noticed this? When I switched to the 18-35, crystal clear. Would you rather shoot on these s35 cameras with crop glass for that reason? Just wondering because I still shoot stills and FF is definitely the way to go and I’d rather have 1 set of glass
Sorry for the late reply. It all depends on the glass your using. The sigma 18-35mm is a freak of a lens (its just super sharp). I shoot with my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 FF lens on my 6k and it looks great. If you own the glass and don't have the money to upgrade then use what you have.
When it is about IS, why not go for the more effective systems from Canon? From what I have seen the IS on Sigma isnt really that great. Tamron also seems very effective and they have sharp f2.8 zooms as well.
Your probably right about effectiveness. For me the choice to go sigma is about picture quality and trust. Although it’s a pretty good system I have to say. I still use it to this day.
I always go for zooms as well. I definitely need the efficiency of a zoom lens because I shoot run and gun style. I usually tend to stick to the full frame equivalent of 35-60mm, but there are times the wide or long end of the focal length of a zoom lens saved my ass.
dude! great video and very informative i love it how convenient it was for me to find out the best lenses that go with bmpcc 6k. also, the beat in the background is just bonkers! can you share the artists name?
Bog standard 18-35 although OIS would be nice. For when I need wide 9mm Laowa. I was thinking of the Sigma 50-100 but debating between that and Canon 70-200 at some point. Do you find the the focus breathing alright with your Sigma 50-100?
I really wish the Tokina was as widely praised as the sigma 18-35 (basically the bmpcc kit lens now) even with the vignetting, which the sigma also suffers from between 18 and 20mm (using the viltrox ef-m2 ii. Photo lenses have atrocious focus throws that don't apply well to "cinema" use. My sigma 18-35 will hopefully just be a stand-in for an eventual mft mount Fujinon or DZO 10-20. I think there's also nothing wrong with primes if you know how you want to tell whatever story you're telling.
I totally agree with you here. Tokina needs way more love. Its crazy how much more field of view you get with speed boosters. You see more vinetteing with the on the Pocket 4K (with 0.71 Metabones) then the 6K. I've got my eye on DZO and would love to test them. Primes are great, I want a nice set. If I could pick up a set it would be the Tokina Vista's but unfortunately my workflow doesnt allow me to work with them right now. All my projects are run and gun.
I use a Sigma 17-50 most of the time, but I feel quite often that I want that extra zoom. I rarely shot at very wide angles, so I feel that a 24-70 would be the best choice for aps-c. Though the price is a little steep for me, and I'm very worried about using that lens on a gimbal with a follow focus. The focus ring is very close to the camera and I don't think there's a way to mount the follow focus motor. Have you ever tried using a similar setup? Great video as always, thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Lots of great points here. I to find myself wanting that extra telephone perspective and get that with the 24-70 but it isnt the end all be all. I've never used this lens on a gimbal because of the front lens element moves and will throw off its balance. On the filp side having built in optical image stablization is handy. When flying a gimbal I go with the 11-16.
@@jasoniscx4 Hello once again! Came back to this video after having evolved a small production company and I'm ready to just into a Sigma 24-70. Just wanted to ask how useful the OS is for video. I've used the Tamron 24-70 and VC is good when static, but quite bad during pans, tilts, etc. Do you know is Sigma's OS is better in that regard? I'd prefer a lens that's less "locked" for exchange to a smoother motion in general. Thank you!!
Hello friend, love u videos man! Do you know if the sigma 24-70m stabilization works in bmpcc 4k with viltrox or metabones speedbooster? Thank you for help the community!
Marcello Sortino thanks! Stabilization works on the 4K with metabones. But it doesn’t work all that well, I’ve seen better stabilization in other lenses. Hope this helps.
Hi Goldwulf. Really love your videos, very practical! I have a question: how does the speedbooster affect a lens' focal range (or the appearance of it) on a BMPCC 4K? Will the 24-70mm still look the same focal length? Thanks.
I dont understand how Super 35 works. I can use efs lenses and fullframe lenses ? Will they zoom in because they are not meant for super 35? And Won't there be vignetting?
It’s pretty simple actually. Super 35 is a smaller sensor than full frame. Lenses made for super 35 have a smaller image circle only allowing coverage up to a super 35 sensor. Using a lenses made for smaller sensor (super 35 on full frame) will cause vignetting (darkness around the corners) in your images. Lenses that are made for large format can be used on small sensors cause of its large image circle. Hope this helps.
I’m assuming your asking if you can use a Nikon mount sigma on a pocket camera? You can it you adapt it. But my advice would be to sell the Nikon mount for a EF mount sigma
@@topvirtualtourscom if you’re a run and gun shooter I have to recommend the sigma 18-35 f1.8 it’s sharp has amazing color, it’s focus range is almost macro and it’s fast (good in low light) hands down an all star lens

Even bought the usb dock which shouold solve the problem but never managed it to correct the focus issue which I find out latter is the very common issue. I hope there is no such an issue with Canon mount.
Totally irrelevant, but can anybody share their experience with the BMPCC cameras on a run and gun documentary setup? I am considering the S1H or either the BMPCC 4K or 6K. I don't own a easyrig or gimbal, so the IBIS, not necessary to rig, and lowlight capabilities of the S1H seems very intriguing despite I tend to like the image quality of the Blackmagic cameras better. dude! great video and very informative i love it how convenient it was for me to find out the best lenses that go with bmpcc 6k. also, the beat in the background is just bonkers! can you share the artists name?
Appreciate your comment! Thanks! Not sure I remember the artists name but I can tell you the song is from artlist.io
Bog standard 18-35 although OIS would be nice. For when I need wide 9mm Laowa. I was thinking of the Sigma 50-100 but debating between that and Canon 70-200 at some point.
Do you find the the focus breathing alright with your Sigma 50-100?
Focus breathing is noticeable but its a specialty lens for me since I'm typically using a Sigma 18-35 or 24-70. If its on its fixed on a subject.
Please make a video on the Cinematics Sigma 18-35 rehoused! I’m looking to send mine over to get it modded and I want to know if the $1k is worth it.
Its on my list of video to release. Coming soon :)
Jason what do you use for the cool animation on the lower left? Is that made in premiere pro? Or a cool plugin?
Its a custom made logo icon animation. I have a buddy who's good with 3D and motion graphics. He created them for me.
Would he do something on commission?
Wait, you mean you get vignette with 18-35 on b4k?
Thank you!!
Do you use a step down ring to 77mm for the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens?
I do! Works well. I do notice some vignetting at 24mm. Very slight.
@@jasoniscx4 Alot 🙏🏻 thanks!
For the t3 do I need and viltorx for bmpck4
If so can u send the right link to it please 🙏. Ordered the wrong one last time
Hey buddy, what kind of speed booster do I need for this set up please? I have the bmpcc 4K along with the Sigma Cine T2.9 at 18-35mm ? Thz
Metabones is the only speed booster I would recommend. 0.71
@@jasoniscx4 awesome! Is that the EF to Micro 4/3rds brand?
Hi Goldwulf. Really love your videos, very practical! I have a question: how does the speedbooster affect a lens' focal range (or the appearance of it) on a BMPCC 4K? Will the 24-70mm still look the same focal length? Thanks.
the crop factor on the 0.71 booster by metabones is 1.43x
@@jasoniscx4 thank you!
@@jasoniscx4 Ah ok, thanks a lot that helped. And will there be a crop because i am using a fullframe lens on a super 35 Mount ?
Is the sigma 24-70 better than Canon's version?
Disruptive Media IMO yes
Wouldnt the canon versions be better with IS?
the sigma 24-70 has IS too
@@jasoniscx4 thanks!
Hi, is it possible to use Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 art lens from Nikon D7100 with bmpcc 6k camera?
I’m assuming your asking if you can use a Nikon mount sigma on a pocket camera? You can it you adapt it. But my advice would be to sell the Nikon mount for a EF mount sigma
@@jasoniscx4 Ok, thanks a lot. And what whould be your choice for one ultimate zoom lanse for BMPCC 6K?
@@topvirtualtourscom if you’re a run and gun shooter I have to recommend the sigma 18-35 f1.8 it’s sharp has amazing color, it’s focus range is almost macro and it’s fast (good in low light) hands down an all star lens
@@jasoniscx4 Thanks again, I was actually not satisfied with Sigma 18-35 on my Nikon as it was out of focus from the first day I bought it. Even bought the usb dock which shouold solve the problem but never managed it to correct the focus issue which I find out latter is the very common issue. I hope there is no such an issue with Canon mount.
🤘
Totally irrelevant, but can anybody share their experience with the BMPCC cameras on a run and gun documentary setup? I am considering the S1H or either the BMPCC 4K or 6K. I don't own a easyrig or gimbal, so the IBIS, not necessary to rig, and lowlight capabilities of the S1H seems very intriguing despite I tend to like the image quality of the Blackmagic cameras better. I always rented out all my gear before, so this will be my first cinema camera if I make the purchase for either one.
This comment took me a while to respond to but I thought about it and now have an answer for you. Recently I shot a mini doc with the BMPCC. Its was crazy run and gun like you would never believe. I learned a lot from the experience that I want to share. I'm working on a video that I'll release very soon.
@goldwulf thanks man. I saw you're post that you're working on a video about the subject. Looking forward for it!!
that was odd flashing the channel name across the screen at 00:46 , you put me off....Laurie
Can’t win um’ all 🤷
Fyi...it's because I recall decades ago an uproar about this technique being used in TV advertising.....Laurie
1st haha
all the same lenses :)
Keep it consistent.
Do you like the canon 50mm 1.8?
