Hi! Thank you so much for this video. I currently am a junior this year and am a Psychology major. I had a couple questions for you. Do you know any good online programs for a masters in school psych as well as an EDS? Also do you know if the GRE is required for graduate programs for school psych? Thank you.
Hi Katelyn, I don't know much of online programs for school psychology but I know there are some out there. As for the GRE, some schools do require you to take it but not all school do, so you might want to look at the requirements for the schools you are looking into applying for. For example, a lot of private non-profit schools don't require you to take the GRE but have other requirements in place. Hope that helps!
Hi Nayeli! So NASP stands for National Association of School Psychologist, which is the the national organization for school psychs in the United States. When a program is accredited by NASP it means that the program meets the nationally recognized standards....so it is a "high quality" program in other words. Having the NCSP credential, which is what you get through the NASP application, tells employers you meet the criteria/standards and verifies that you are fully prepared to be a school psychologist. However, if your program is not NASP accredited it does not mean that it is not a good program, there are non-nasp approved programs that are really good, you just need to do your research. I believe SP graduate programs need to apply to get accredited by NASP and some may chose not to do it or haven't tried getting it. Some people say it is worth it and some say it didn't help them much or made a big difference, so it is a personal preference as it is not required to get a job. There is also CASP which is the California Association of School Psychologist (which I am part of), each state has its own I believe. As far as how long the process is for your NCSP application, it depends if your program is NASP-approved or not. If it is, the review process takes about 4 weeks. If it is not NASP-approved, it takes about 3-4 months. Sorry for such a long reply! I hope I answered your question though lol :) You can also visit www.nasponline.org for more info.
What position do you have now? I mean, if you're still in school, than what job is available with your current education? Could you please tell where can a person going down the pathway work at each stage and how to get some proper experience?
If you have your BA already I believe something like that. If no prior eduction then more like 6+ years. It's 4 years for BA in Psychology or related. 2-3 years for Grad school which checks off practicum hrs + 1,200 hours internship since it's required in order to complete the program. Apply for State License. Apply for NASP certification if needed (unknown time frame). I THINK if I followed correctly. I am 27 wanting to go into the field and it feels so late for how long I'd be in school but better late than never I suppose!
@ thanks for the response! Better late than never indeed! You’re not alone, I’m 29 with a BA in psych (minor in marketing) - been working in marketing since college but been considering grad school. I can totally relate about it feeling late for how long it would take
Hi, I am looking to applying for school psychology but my B.A will be in liberal studies. However, I have an AA in communications and have various psychology classes. Will a liberal studies degree be okay?
Hi Melissa! Having a B.A. in liberal studies should be fine :) Getting your degree in psychology, or related field, is recommend just because it would better prepare you for the content that is taught in school psychology. For example, certain theorist or developmental information. However, it is not a requirement to get accepted into a school psychology program. If you have any other questions, let me know. Hope that helps!
Yet another great video. I live in NYC are and have applied to an MS in a school psychology program. The director liked my application and has requested an interview. Do you have any tips for this process? I feel like I have a fair chance of getting in.
Hi Chet! In most of these interviews they want to get to know you and see if you are a good fit for their program. In a way, they are interviewing you to see if they should give you a spot, similar to a job interview. Have a good understanding of their program so you are ready to answer any questions they may ask you. Also, be your self (in a professional way lol)! They want to get to know you, your personality, and your educational background. Make sure to tell them your goals and how their program will help you reach them. Dress nice and be organized. Each program has a different process and interview questions, but in my opinion, they usually have the same purpose which is to see if you are a good fit for their program. I hope this helps and good luck!!
hi! so i'm really interested on becoming a school psychologist but I would like to know of all that you said pretty much how many years does it take to already be working in the school after graduating high school thanks, katerinne
Hi Katerinne! It depends, but to get your bachelors it takes about 3-4 years and then your masters takes about 3 years so somewhere between 6-7years total.
@@MrsSchoolPsych Ok, thanks, umm I have one question, so I just want to know if I can have a child development bachelors degree and than go to grad school to become a school psychologist? Or do I have to have a psychology bachelors to become a school psychologist?, thanks
@@katerinnezamarripa6021 You can have any Bachelors degree, but as she said, it’s helpful to have a Bachelors degree in either Psychology, Child Development, or another related field.
What school do you go too if you don’t mind me asking? And how do you like the program so far? I’m from Cali too and applied to Fresno Pacific University but too pricy so I will be applying for Sacramento and Fresno state (:
What school are you doing your Ed.S. at and is it online ? I’m having a hard time finding an all online Ed’s program . Please help for the state of Georgia
Thank you for this video! For the state license, if you find a job outside of your state, would you have to reapply in that state for your license? And if so, how difficult is that?
Hi! Usually every state has their own requirements that you would need to meet to start working as a school psychologist. It is different for every state so you would need to do some research on the state you would like to work in.
I review the NASP site you linked in a previous comment. There are some programs that are NASP accredited but they’re have conditional approval. Does attending a conditional program have any effect on obtaining certification or post employment opportunities?
Hi Kayla, I believe that means that they are still in the process of getting NASP accredited. Attending a conditional program or a non-nasp approved program doesn't affect employment opportunities. The main thing you need to be able to practice as a school psych is your state credential. You can always apply for your NCSP. I will be uploading a video on this topic sometime tomorrow, so keep an eye out for it :)
I am currently getting my BA in Psychology. I am just wondering if when you apply to grad school, is there a chance that one or two classes you took in undergrad could transfer credits to grad school?
Hi Molly, Usually undergrad credits don't transfer to grad school to cancel out other classes. The classes you take in grad school are considered upper level and are not ones that you would take in undergrad so I would say no, undergrad classes don't transfer credits to grad school.
I would recommend taking it your Junior year of college... for sure by the first semester of your senior year. That way you have enough time to get your scores back and if you have to retake it you have enough time to do that too :)
The program that I am looking into is NASP accredited and offers an MA in Educational Psychology along with a Professional Diploma. Is the Professional Diploma similar to Ed.S?
It would depend on your program of choice but usually programs don't require you to have a bachelors in a specific area of study to apply for a graduate program in school psychology so educational studies would probably be fine. I have people in my cohort who are teachers and others who got their BA in history. The main thing is having a passion for this field and being somewhat familiar with children, school systems, special education, etc.
Mrs. School Psych Thank you so much for your response! I declared my major as Educational Studies one week ago. I really enjoy working with children! I volunteer as a soccer coach for 7-8 year old kids and work as a full time camp counselor in the summer! I also participated in my schools Big Brother Big sister program. I‘m currently between being a teacher or a school psychologist.
@@sage5723 Both are great options and will allow you to make a difference in a child's life. Look at the pros and cons of each career and see what fits you best and you will find fulfilling. Best of luck! :)

Thank you for making this video!! 😊 I'm currently still taking classes to get my BA in Psychology, and searching for School Psychology Master programs
Awesome, best of luck! :D
The degrees to enter to School Psych also depends on what university you’re applying in. Mine requires a bachelors in Psychology or Education.
Could you please explain more
