Love your channel! I am a third year (internship) student in New York. I love that your channel will raise awareness for our field and hopefully encourage more people to join it. Wishing you the best of luck in your program!
Hi Greta!! I am wanting to study school psychology in New York as well! I was wondering if you could give me some info on what school you attended and how the admissions process works, thanks!!
Where I live we diagnose ID and LD. We do not identify ASD, that is diagnosed outside our system, and only then do we identify. All our identifications, even LD and ID, are done by a committee of 8 - four union and four union staff (one of which is a psychologist).
I want to be come one to advocate for children who are often forgotten. I’m just super nervous about the gre exam and taking statistics! Everything else I am confident I’ll do well.
The one thing that holds me back more than anything is my spelling. When you mentioned report writing my heart rate increase. Growing up i never really received the adequate amount of help with spelling and writing so today when a job requires a lot of writing, I try to stay away from it. I received my bachelors in psychology, thankfully I was able to use spell checks, but now looking into counseling and psychology graduate degrees I can’t continue hiding or avoiding this problem. Any advice for someone like me?
Grammarly? It even checks your emails.. you can correct them and learn from it at the same time, like learning how to draw by tracing. Use it as a support / scaffold until you improve.
Don't let that hold you back. Continue to use spell checks and different apps that help with that. You will learn from it. There are so many people who may struggle with spelling due to many different reasons (such as english not being their first language or simply that some words are hard to spell). You got this.
Or just don't, a delay .. mandatory. My sister is one through the cheap online ones... and autistic...this man is a bachelor in philosophical psychology and continental philosophy that defies all your methods. We want to help this man by reducing his value in attachment theory, that's not good enough. You will just make it worse we study all these advanced courses in philosophy of the mind and continental philosophy at the Sametime.
You can still be a good school psychologist without writing being your strength. However, I think that written communication is an important part that if you can improve, you should give it a shot. Try to do more reading if you can find books that of interest, that should help your understanding of good grammar and sentence structure. Also I would see about taking a college course on writing if possible. Otherwise if that is not feasible there are excellent books out there to guide you on the topic of writing. Try this classic: THe Elements of Style (by Strunk and White) and also the more recent Woe is I : THe Grammarphobes guide to better English in plain English (O'Conner). These two books alone I bet can help you quite a bit. Also, I would steer away from using only grammarly or word processing or AI to guide your writing. Many times it is more valuable to have your own voice. This I think will come but reliance on programs will stifle that ultimately I think. You can do it!
How do you get out of the field and what options are there? The politics and toxic environment has burned me out (and many others). After 20-years, unless one has a license for private practice, you are trapped into the field.
what theories, models or methods that is typically used in practice within this career path to help children and young people? is it something we are taught as undergrads?
Thank you very much for the informative video . ❤️🙏🏻 do school psychologists test students who exhibit aggressive behaviors such as biting or throwing a chair ? Or be in direct contact with them ? Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Hi! You would need to get your bachelor's first and then your master's, I would say anywhere from 6-7 years total (bachelor's and master's). This would vary depending on the program you get in to.
Hi! Current grad student here in school psych. This question is sort of tricky to answer without more details. I know of a lot of people in my program who did not have bachelors degrees in Psychology. However, most of those people had worked in schools prior to joining the program for years (not always as teachers, some as paras, tutor’s, etc) and I’m unsure if they all had education degrees prior which would still be relevant. Also, I know of a girl in my program who did her undergrad in family studies/social work which still had some degree of psychology involved. I’d say if you had a degree completely unrelated that the best step for you would be to get experience in a school/working with kids. I know for my program they look at undergrad degrees and experience in the same light so these programs would not be completely unmanageable for you to get into! I hope this helps and feel free to respond if you still have questions (:
thank you so much natalie.... actually i am an Indian and i was planning to do my masters abroad.. my bachelors is business studies and i am interested to do psychology.my idea may be little weird doing something that are totally different but still i wanted to enquire because I don't want any regrets.🙈
@@minnimouselia3605 I had a minor in business! In some sense, you will use some of that business degree - especially if you had to take some classes about laws and court cases like I did! It’s always good to look at all your options though. I hope my previous answer to your question helped and best of luck finding a masters program!
Here in Brazil we call psychopedagogue. It's the same thing? I'm kinda confused about the names, neuro psychopedagogue, school psychologist, can you explain?
I haven't actually started report writing yet, I will start that this coming year. However, we have discussed report writing and have gotten some insight from school psychs who are already in the field and they say reports are usually around 13 pages minimum but may usually be longer.
Do they really care about the child though? For some reason I get the vibe that all of the teacher and admin are super gossipy and it’s like high school in there.
I have some French and that has helped in Canada where we have French Immersion and Francophone schools. One of my colleagues speaks mandarin and she has helped me a couple times! Good to know another language!
you should do a video on how to become a school psychologist or your journey in becoming a school psychologist !!
Thank you for your suggestion! I will def add it to my video ideas list and share that with you guys in the near future :D

What is report writing like?
I haven't actually started report writing yet, I will start that this coming year. However, we have discussed report writing and have gotten some insight from school psychs who are already in the field and they say reports are usually around 13 pages minimum but may usually be longer.
So is a school psychologist a general or clinical psychologist?
They’re specifically a school psychologist. They get a school psychologist degree, so that’s different.
Do they really care about the child though? For some reason I get the vibe that all of the teacher and admin are super gossipy and it’s like high school in there.
Are most Psychologists Bilingual?
No, unfortunately they are not! We need more bilingual school psychologists.
@@MrsSchoolPsych Hopefully that will be me! 😆

Are school psychologists mainly targetted at special ed?
My aunt who is a teacher said mostly they only focus on special edn
So in other words it's a fancy term for guidance counselor.
No
